Hundreds of people were expected to attend multiple Des Moines rallies over the weekend honoring George Floyd, a black man who died Monday during an incident with Minneapolis police that has sparked riots and national protests.
More than 870 people had indicated online by Friday afternoon that they planned to attend an evening rally at the Des Moines police station.
Hundreds of people were also expected at Saturday, Sunday and Monday events in Des Moines.
Police and organizers of each of the events had on Thursday and Friday indicated they intend for the demonstrations to be non-violent.
Police will be in the areas to « support the marches, » department spokesman Sgt.
