Demonstrators are gathering in downtown Detroit for a 10th night of protesting the death of George Floyd, a black man who died May 25 after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes.
The marches demanding justice for Floyd’s family and an end to police brutality, have stretched for miles, and hours, across the city each night. Saturday night’s protest was peaceful and marked by a dance party.
A curfew from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. remains in effect, though it’s unclear how strictly it will be enforced and if it will be extended into next week.
Marchers moved away from their starting point outside Detroit Police headquarters. The group headed north on Third Street to the I-75 service drive. From there they marched east to Second Avenue, where they turned north across the freeway. The crowd covered the width of the street.
They marched north past Cass Technical High School to Martin Luther King Boulevard, turned east to Woodward Avenue and then headed south to go back downtown.
