In an unprecedented move, groups of self-styled “electors” arranged by the Trump campaign in battleground states won by President-elect Joe Biden will meet Monday to vote for President Trump and send results claiming he won the states’ presidential elections to Congress, White House advisor Stephen Miller said Monday, the latest of the president’s far-fetched attempts to challenge Biden’s victory—which, like his previous efforts, is almost entirely certain to fail. “These electors have neither been certified by state executives nor purportedly appointed by state legislators. They don’t have legal authority and so this does not affect the counting of Electoral College votes,” election law expert Rick Hasen wrote on his blog about Miller’s comments Monday. “But it does show that the Trump campaign will continue to try to delegitimize the Biden presidency and the American election system.” Trump’s slates of electors will be considered by Congress when they count the votes, the Washington Post notes, but could only be accepted if both chambers of Congress voted to accept them.
