Evans died after being struck by a vehicle that drove into a barricade outside the U.S. Capitol building on April 2.
The family of William « Billy » Evans, the 18-year veteran of the U.S. Capitol Police who was killed in Friday’s attack at a Capitol checkpoint, said Tuesday that his death « has left a gaping void in our lives that will never be filled. » « Billy was the best father, son, brother, and friend anyone could ever hope for. His death has left a gaping void in our lives that will never be filled, » the family said in their first public statement, which was released by the U.S. Capitol Police. Evans was one of two officers struck when a vehicle was rammed through the north barricade of the U.S. Capitol on April 2. The suspect behind the wheel, authorities said, also exited the car and lunged toward officers with a knife in hand before being shot. Yogananda Pittman, the acting chief of the Capitol Police, announced Evans’ death about three hours after the incident occurred.
