Why Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas Really Dislikes Facebook And Twitter

The judge echoed long-held Republican complaints in new remarks, arguing the platforms unfairly target conservatives online.
Clarence Thomas holds a pretty dim view on Facebook, Twitter—and much of the rest of social media. He and the other eight Supreme Court justices handed down a ruling Monday morning in a case about President Trump blocking users on Twitter, vacating a lower court’s ruling that Trump’s action was unconstitutional. Thomas took the opportunity to pen a 12-page concurring opinion laying out why the government should begin treating social media companies differently, regulating them as utilities—like, say, a telephone provider—and stopping them from taking down content. “If the analogy between common carriers and digital platforms is correct, then an answer may arise for dissatisfied platform users who would appreciate not being blocked: laws that restrict the platform’s right to exclude,” Thomas concluded.
