The high court’s Wednesday ruling « was only on if the plaintiffs had standing, » the Louisiana Republican said Sunday.
Senator Bill Cassidy, a Louisiana Republican, said that he believes the Supreme Court will ultimately overturn Texas’ controversial abortion ban despite its refusal on Wednesday to block the statute. The Texas law effectively bans all abortions —including in cases of rape and incest—after six weeks. Reproductive rights advocates have pointed out that most women do not even know they are pregnant at six weeks, meaning the law essentially bans all abortions in the state. During a Sunday interview with ABC News’ This Week, Cassidy downplayed the criticism of the Supreme Court’s ruling. The GOP senator said that the decision was not about the constitutionality of the Texas law. « The ruling on SCOTUS was that the plaintiffs did not have standing. It had nothing to do with the constitutionality of Roe v. Wade. It was only on if the plaintiffs had standing, » Cassidy said. Roe v. Wade is the landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling that established the legal precedent that the Constitution protects women’s right to abortions.
