More Americans Want A GOP President Over Biden In 2024—But Not If It’s Trump Or His Rivals, Poll Finds

Biden narrowly beats out Trump, DeSantis, Pence and Cruz in a Morning Consult/Politico poll even though more respondents said they’d vote for a generic Republican candidate.
More Americans would back a generic Republican candidate over President Joe Biden in 2024 as his approval ratings hit record lows, a new Morning Consult/ Politico poll finds—but while ex-President Donald Trump is favored to win the GOP nomination, neither him nor the other top Republican contenders would beat Biden in a head-to-head matchup. 42%. That’s how many respondents have a favorable view of Trump, versus 55% who view him unfavorably. Biden is only slightly more popular, with 43% holding a favorable view and 52% an unfavorable one. The Morning Consult/ Politico poll follows other polling that’s been more favorable to Trump. A Harvard CAPS/Harris poll conducted January 19-20 found Trump beat Biden by six points in a head-to-head matchup (46% to 40%). A previous Morning Consult/ Politico poll found in December that a higher share of voters believed Trump should run in 2024 than Biden, with 34% saying Biden should “probably” or “definitely” run versus 39% for Trump.
