Only 3 In 10 Americans Support Trans Athletes’ Participation In Female Sports, Poll Finds

55 percent of Americans are opposed to allowing transgender women and girls to participate in high school sports, according to a new survey conducted by the Washington Post-University of Maryland.
Only about 3 in 10 Americans believe transgender women and girls should be allowed to participate in female sports, according to a new poll from the -University of Maryland, which comes a week after Louisiana became the 18th state to pass a transgender athlete ban last week. About 5% of Americans ages 18 to 29 identify as transgender or nonbinary, a Pew Research Center survey released last week found, the largest out of any age group. Some 1.6% of respondents 30 to 45 said they identified as transgender or nonbinary and 0.3% of respondents 50 or over. The poll comes as a host of Republican-led legislatures have proposed or enacted legislation targeting the LGBTQ community, including Louisiana, which became the 18th state to pass an anti-trans sports ban last week. The state banned transgender women and girls from competing in sports at the elementary and secondary school level as well as in college after Louisiana’s Democratic governor decided not to veto or approve the legislation (any bill passed by the Legislature in Louisiana becomes law at the end of the session if the governor does not sign or veto it).
