Texas trooper fired amid investigation into the horror of Uvalde school shooting

First termination of a state law enforcement officer
A Texas trooper who was among the first to arrive on the scene of the mass school shooting in Uvalde, Texas in May has been fired. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) fired Sgt. Juan Maldonado, the first trooper to be fired.
On that horrible day in Uvalde, nineteen children and two teachers were murdered and seventeen people were injured at Robb Elementary School by an eighteen-year-old shooter on May 24. Since then grieving families and Uvalde residents have demanded that law enforcement officials who were on the scene of the mass shooting and did not act be held accountable. Seven people are under review by the department’s inspector general due to their actions or inaction during the shooting. Maldonado was under an internal investigation.
The firing of Maldonado is a first baby step into what must be done.
