Hours after being arrested in New York City on 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, former U.S. President Donald Trump returned to Florida and delivered a speech from his Mar-a-Lago estate. Trump insisted to an overwhelmingly white audience of supporters that he’s innocent. “I never thought anything like this could happen in America. I never thought it could happen. The only crime that I have committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it.”
Trump spent less time elaborating on those who seek to destroy America, but instead offered a roster of Americans whom he contends seek to destroy him. He called two of them racist. Both are Black women.
“They’ve got a local racist democrat district attorney in Atlanta who is doing everything in her power to indict me over an absolutely perfect phone call,” Trump declared. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is the person to whom he was referring. The so-called perfect phone call is the one in which Trump allegedly asked Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, to find enough votes to alter the election outcome. “All I want to do is this: I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have,” Trump said to Raffensperger in a November 2020 phone call that was being audio recorded.
