The No. 3 seeded Russian overcame a two-set deficit to beat Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland, 3-6, 6-7(1), 6-4, 7-6(1), 6-0 in a match that began at 11: 16 p.m. and ended at 3:39 a.m. Melbourne time. The fifth set began at 3:16 a.m.
The match lasted 4 hours, 23 minutes, making it the third latest finish ever at the Australian Open and third latest finish ever at a Grand Slam tournament.
Medvedev, the former U.S. open champion, will next face No. 27 Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third round.
“Tough, tough, tough,” a relieved Medvedev said on court. “I think the only two matches I went from two sets to love down was here, so that’s a good memory for sure.
