Wander Franco, troubled shortstop for the Tampa Bay Rays, was placed on administrative leave through June 1 amidst legal issues in the Dominican Republic.
According to a report in the Tampa Bay Times by Marc Topkin, Tampa Bay Rays troubled shortstop Wander Franco was taken off the Rays’ 40-man roster Thursday and placed on administrative leave through June 1.
Franco, who is facing charges related to an alleged relationship with a minor in the Dominican Republic, has been away from the team since mid-August. Though he has not been formally charged, he remains under investigation in his home country and is required to make monthly check-ins with court officials through June 30 unless his case is resolved earlier.
The decision was made by Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association and is a matter of paperwork. It also answers the question of whether Franco would be placed on administrative leave or the restricted list.
