The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation into Alphabet subsidiary Waymo’s robotaxi fleet on Tuesday, following a series of reports the vehicles violated traffic safety laws and collided with gates, chains and parked cars—the fourth probe into self-driving systems by regulators this year.Key Facts

A preliminary evaluation of Waymo’s vehicles follows 22 incident reports involving the vehicles, including collisions with stationary objects like parked vehicles or gates, or other instances in which the autonomous cars violated traffic laws, the NHTSA said.

Of the 22 reports, 17 involved crashes or fires, according to regulators, who said Waymo’s automated driving system “appeared to disobey traffic safety control devices” and crashes occurred after the vehicles “exhibited unexpected behavior” near these devices.

None of the incidents involved injuries or fatalities.
