The first full-length reviews of the Apple Vision Pro were published today, revealing some new details about the headset before it launches in the U.S. on Friday.
To learn more, check out our roundup of Apple Vision Pro reviews and unboxing videos.
Battery Life
Apple says the Vision Pro provides up to two hours of battery life overall, and up to 2.5 hours for 2D video playback specifically. In his review, however, Brian Tong said he achieved nearly 2.5 hours of battery life for general usage, and separately was able to watch the three-hour movie Avengers: Endgame on a single charge.
All in all, it seems that the Vision Pro may last up to 30 minutes longer per charge than Apple’s advertised battery life claims, but results will vary.
Home Screen
According to Tong, third-party apps on visionOS are listed alphabetically starting on the second page of the Home Screen, and cannot be reordered like they can be on the iPhone and iPad. Apps cannot be placed into folders either.
Apple could add these options in future visionOS updates.
Personas and EyeSight
Since the Vision Pro covers your face during video calls, Apple allows you to create a digital version of yourself called a Persona.
Apple refers to a Persona as an « authentic spatial representation » of a person that shows facial expressions and hand movements in real time. The feature is still in beta, and it seems that Apple has a lot of room for improvement.
On FaceTimes with friends and family, the reviews were unanimous: « You look awful, » my sister said. « It’s like Botox from hell, » remarked the always-kind Jason Gay. « Frightening, » said my dad.
Calling other Vision Pro reviewers was slightly better because we all looked ridiculous. But everyone agreed I looked the worst. And this was after I remade my Persona numerous times, with professional lighting.
Poor Joanna! (She’s still amazing, nothing can change that!)
I won’t go into that much detail on Apple’s deeply weird and extremely uncanny 3D persona system here […] You can see why Apple put the beta label on them; there’s a long way to go before using a persona on a call isn’t distracting at best and, at worst, extremely rude.
Personas extend to the Vision Pro’s outer display, allowing others to view a digital recreation of your eyes. This feature is called EyeSight, and it has mostly been panned on social media since Vision Pro reviews were first published earlier today.Mac Virtual Display
Many reviewers shared their thoughts on using the Vision Pro as an external display for a Mac.
CNET’s Scott Stein was impressed:
What if my desk was just floating monitors? What if I didn’t need anything but a headset? Vision Pro gets close to that feeling when all the apps are open and the flow is going. I’m doing that now. I’m in my virtual floating computer as I write this. There are glitches, and sometimes the controls feel too floaty, but in its first form, I’m shocked at how good it already is.
However, he mentioned a caveat:
And while the Vision Pro’s display is great as a monitor, staring into 3D space for a while puts my eyes into a different focus zone than actual reality. Taking the headset off to work on my laptop, my eyes need time to settle and refocus. I feel myself slipping into long sessions in Vision Pro, but my eyes want me to take breaks.
Tom’s Guide’s Mark Spoonauer:
One of the options in Control Center is the ability to connect with your Mac, but you can also bring your Mac desktop into the Vision Pro just by looking at it. I saw a Connect button floating above my MacBook Pro 14-inch, pinched my fingers together and saw my laptop’s screen go blank, popping up on the wall in front of me instead.
You don’t get multiple desktop views, but you do get a crystal clear 4K display that renders text crisply, and you can make that canvas positively huge so it dwarfs most of the best monitors. Your keyboard and mouse still work as they normally would with no latency. You can even use your keyboard in Vision Pro apps if you want. Yes, only Apple could do this, and I could see myself taking the Vision Pro on business trips and using it back at the hotel.
Stay tuned for additional details about the Vision Pro over the coming days.

перед этим в Украине силовики задержали бизнесмена, основателя инвесткомпании Concorde Capital Игоря Мазепы. Он подозревается в создании преступной организации и завладении 7 га земли возле Киевской ГЭС;
в компании Concorde Capital связывают такие действия ГБР с позицией Игоря Мазепы по поводу давления силовиков на бизнес;

US readies retaliatory strikes for drone attack by Iran-backed militants

Officials said they would play out « over the course of several days. »
The U.S. response to a drone attack that killed three American service members in Jordan last weekend will be carried out « over the course of several days » and striking « multiple targets, » a U.S. official Tuesday.
« These are going to be very deliberate targets — deliberate strikes on facilities that enabled these attacks » on U.S. forces, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity in order to discuss sensitive details.
Officials would not say whether any of the targets would be inside or outside Iran.
Leaving the White House Tuesday morning, President Joe Biden said he had decided how the U.S. would respond to the attack by Iran-backed militants, but gave no more details.
When asked if Iran is responsible, he said Tehran is arming these proxy groups. « I do hold them responsible in that they’re supplying the weapons to the people who did it, » he said.
At the same time, he told reporters the U.S. is not « looking for » a « wider war in the Middle East.
Details about how an enemy attack drone was able to reach a remote U.S. military base in Jordan were still trickling in Tuesday, as the military continued its investigation.
According to three officials, speaking on condition of anonymity in order to discuss sensitive battlefield details, the one-way enemy attack drone approached the base around the same time as a U.S. surveillance drone, causing confusion and preventing the U.S. from deploying air defenses.
The enemy drone hit the living quarters of the base early in the morning Sunday while troops were still sleeping, wounding at least 40 and killing three.
The Pentagon on Monday announced the names of the three Army reservists killed as Sgt. William Jerome Rivers, 46, of Carrollton, Georgia.; Spc. Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24, of Waycross, Georgia.; and Spc. Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia., all from an Army Reserve engineering unit from Georgia.
The deadly attack, which several officials have described as simple luck by the enemy, is a dramatic escalation in the months-long tension between Iran-back militants and US forces stationed in Iraq and Syria.
Since mid October, there have been at least 165 attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq, Syria and Jordan. The U.S. has launched several retaliatory strikes, including in Iraq.
In response to the strikes, a spokesperson for the Iranian Mission for the U.N. said late Sunday, « Iran has nothing to do with the attacks in questions. The conflict has been initiated by the United States military against resistance groups in Iraq and Syria; and such operations are reciprocal between them. »
Gen. Robert Abrams, a retired combatant commander, said U.S. Central Command, which oversees forces in the region, will be trying to provide several military strike options to the president.
« Biden needs to send a message, but he also doesn’t want to escalate the tensions … That’s the hard conversation that is happening right now between the Pentagon, CENTCOM and the White House, » Abrams Live.
Some Republicans have questioned Biden’s strategy in the Middle East so far, suggesting he should attack Iran more directly. Officials ABC News spoke with Tuesday would not say where the U.S. strikes might occur or whether they would target Iranian officials directly.
« We need a major reset of our Middle East policy to protect our national security interests and restore deterrence, » House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul said in a statement as House Speaker Mike Johnson called for « a crystal clear message across the globe that attacks on our troops will not be tolerated. »
In an interview taped last week with ABC’s « This Week » co-anchor Martha Raddatz, Gen. CQ Brown, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was asked if Americans being killed in the Middle East would impact his decision making.
He said the military was doing « everything we can to protect our forces » and noted the U.S. does not want « broader conflict » in the region — and that he doesn’t believe Iran wants war with the U.S., either.
« We don’t want to go down a path of greater escalation that drives to a much broader conflict within the region, » Brown said.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Monday that the « could be multi-leveled, come in stages, and be sustained over time. »
« We’ve taken steps to defend ourselves and defend our partners, as well as prevent escalation, » he added. « And the president has been crystal clear: we will respond decisively to any aggression, and we will hold responsible the people who attacked our troops and do so at a time and place of our choosing. »

Do końca pierwszego kwartału będzie to gotowe. Będziemy budowali adekwatne do ekspertyz koncepcje – powiedział Tusk podczas wtorkowej konferencji prasowej.
CPK. A jeszcze dwa dni temu porównał Tuska do « Führera »

Popular, indeed: EGOT winner Elton John, lyricist Bernie Taupin land Gershwin Prize

0

Elton John and Bernie Taupin are this year’s recipients of the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
EGOT status and a Gershwin Prize in the same month? 2024 is proving to be another landmark year for Elton John.
The famed performer and his longtime creative partner, lyricist Bernie Taupin, are this year’s recipients of the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song — the nation’s highest award for influence, impact and achievement in popular music.
“Elton John and Bernie Taupin have written some of the most memorable songs of our lives,” Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress, said in a Tuesday statement. “Their careers stand out for the quality and broad appeal of their music and their influence on their fellow artists.”
“More than 50 years ago, they came from across the pond to win over Americans and audiences worldwide with their beautiful songs and rock anthems,” Hayden added. “We’re proud to honor Elton and Bernie with the Gershwin Prize for their incredible impact on generations of music lovers.”
The iconic songwriting duo behind the hits “Your Song,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Rocket Man,” “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” will be honored with a tribute concert in Washington, D.C., that will air on PBS stations nationwide on April 8.
“I’ve been writing songs with Bernie for 56 years, and we never thought that that one day this might be bestowed upon us,” the “Bennie and the Jets” and “Crocodile Rock” singer said in a statement, noting that “it’s an incredible honor for two British guys to be recognized like this.”
“To be in a house along with the great American songwriters, to even be in the same avenue is humbling, and I am absolutely thrilled to accept,” Taupin added.
John, 76, and Taupin, 73, join the ranks of past Gershwin Prize recipients, including Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, songwriting duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Carole King, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, Tony Bennett, Emilio and Gloria Estefan, Garth Brooks, Lionel Richie and Joni Mitchell.
The honorees are selected by the librarian of Congress, who consults with a board of scholars, producers, performers, songwriters and music specialists.
Earlier this month, John was drafted into the rarefied class of EGOT winners — artists who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Award. The superstar clinched the E — and the 19th spot in the class — with his Emmy win for his variety special “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.” The special was based on his trio of Dodger Stadium shows in November 2022, when he paid tribute to his landmark 1975 concert at the Los Angeles venue.
He also has five Grammys, two Oscars (for the songs “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from “The Lion King” and “[I’m Gonna] Love Me Again” from “Rocketman”), and a Tony (“Aida”) on his proverbial mantle. Taupin, who has always stayed more behind the scenes than his bedazzled counterpart, also won an Oscar for the song from “Rocketman.”
While 2024 brought the awards, 2023 marked another milestone for John. The Rocket Man bid farewell with his globe-trotting Farewell Yellow Brick Road retirement tour over the summer after wearing 16 Gucci suits and playing 330 shows with 6.25 million fans. The tour, which launched in 2018, became the highest grossing tour of all time (but was ultimately overtaken by Taylor Swift’s juggernaut Eras tour).
Before the Dodger Stadium shows, the “Cold Heart” singer played a handful of concerts at the Forum in Inglewood and Staples Center (now Crypto.com Arena) in downtown Los Angeles in 2019, commemorating his five-decade touring love affair with L.A. that former Times music critic Robert Hilburn helped launch in the 1970s.
