Popular, indeed: EGOT winner Elton John, lyricist Bernie Taupin land Gershwin Prize

0

Elton John and Bernie Taupin are this year’s recipients of the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
EGOT status and a Gershwin Prize in the same month? 2024 is proving to be another landmark year for Elton John.
The famed performer and his longtime creative partner, lyricist Bernie Taupin, are this year’s recipients of the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song — the nation’s highest award for influence, impact and achievement in popular music.
“Elton John and Bernie Taupin have written some of the most memorable songs of our lives,” Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress, said in a Tuesday statement. “Their careers stand out for the quality and broad appeal of their music and their influence on their fellow artists.”
“More than 50 years ago, they came from across the pond to win over Americans and audiences worldwide with their beautiful songs and rock anthems,” Hayden added. “We’re proud to honor Elton and Bernie with the Gershwin Prize for their incredible impact on generations of music lovers.”
The iconic songwriting duo behind the hits “Your Song,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Rocket Man,” “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” will be honored with a tribute concert in Washington, D.C., that will air on PBS stations nationwide on April 8.
“I’ve been writing songs with Bernie for 56 years, and we never thought that that one day this might be bestowed upon us,” the “Bennie and the Jets” and “Crocodile Rock” singer said in a statement, noting that “it’s an incredible honor for two British guys to be recognized like this.”
“To be in a house along with the great American songwriters, to even be in the same avenue is humbling, and I am absolutely thrilled to accept,” Taupin added.
John, 76, and Taupin, 73, join the ranks of past Gershwin Prize recipients, including Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, songwriting duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Carole King, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson, Smokey Robinson, Tony Bennett, Emilio and Gloria Estefan, Garth Brooks, Lionel Richie and Joni Mitchell.
The honorees are selected by the librarian of Congress, who consults with a board of scholars, producers, performers, songwriters and music specialists.
Earlier this month, John was drafted into the rarefied class of EGOT winners — artists who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Award. The superstar clinched the E — and the 19th spot in the class — with his Emmy win for his variety special “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.” The special was based on his trio of Dodger Stadium shows in November 2022, when he paid tribute to his landmark 1975 concert at the Los Angeles venue.
He also has five Grammys, two Oscars (for the songs “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from “The Lion King” and “[I’m Gonna] Love Me Again” from “Rocketman”), and a Tony (“Aida”) on his proverbial mantle. Taupin, who has always stayed more behind the scenes than his bedazzled counterpart, also won an Oscar for the song from “Rocketman.”
While 2024 brought the awards, 2023 marked another milestone for John. The Rocket Man bid farewell with his globe-trotting Farewell Yellow Brick Road retirement tour over the summer after wearing 16 Gucci suits and playing 330 shows with 6.25 million fans. The tour, which launched in 2018, became the highest grossing tour of all time (but was ultimately overtaken by Taylor Swift’s juggernaut Eras tour).
Before the Dodger Stadium shows, the “Cold Heart” singer played a handful of concerts at the Forum in Inglewood and Staples Center (now Crypto.com Arena) in downtown Los Angeles in 2019, commemorating his five-decade touring love affair with L.A. that former Times music critic Robert Hilburn helped launch in the 1970s.

Galaxy AI is the big selling point of this year’s Galaxy S24 series, but Samsung’s new features are only confirmed to be free for about a year. In a new interview, Samsung hints at “more powerful” additions to Galaxy AI in the future, but the company still won’t answer any important questions about a future where this is all paid.
Shortly after Samsung’s reveal of the Galaxy S24 series, it became clear that the Galaxy AI features the company is touting won’t be free forever. Disclaimers from Samsung say that the features are only guaranteed to be free through 2025, but make no mention of specifics around this supposed paid future.
Speaking to ET Telecom, Samsung’s TM Roh commented on paid Galaxy AI features, hinting that the company could offer “more powerful” features when they are paid, and that many customers will be satisfied with the existing free features.
According to our analysis, there are various needs for mobile AI. So, there will be consumers who will be satisfied with using the AI capabilities for free. Then there could also be customers who wish for even more powerful AI capabilities, and even pay for them. So, in the future decision making, we will take all these factors into consideration.
Roh’s statement is the first response Samsung has really given about paid Galaxy AI features, but it still leaves a lot on the table.
When will these features be paid? Will any of them be free? How much will it cost? Those are a few of the actually important questions around the idea of paid Galaxy AI, but Samsung remains silent on the matter beyond Roh’s comments here.
In a recent statement to 9to5Google, Samsung said:
We are committed to making Galaxy AI features accessible to our users and will provide them for free until the end of 2025 on supported Samsung Galaxy devices. Different terms may apply for AI features provided by third parties.
For now, we really don’t know much about the future of these features, but hopefully we’ll learn more as that 2025 deadline approaches.
You can read our Galaxy S24 Ultra review now to learn more about how existing Galaxy AI features actually work.

A Delaware judge on Tuesday voided the $56 billion pay package of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, ruling that the company’s board of directors « failed that the compensation plan was fair. »
Tesla’s share price slid about 3% in after-hours trading Tuesday following news of the decision in the lawsuit filed by Richard Tornetta, a shareholder in the electric automaker.
« The plaintiff is entitled to rescission, » Delaware Chancery Court Judge Kathaleen McCormick wrote in her ruling agreeing that Musk’s pay package was inappropriately set by Tesla’s board.
« The parties are to confer on a form of final order implementing this decision and submit a joint letter identifying all issues, including fees that need to be addressed to bring this matter to a conclusion at the trial level, » McCormick said.
The 2018 CEO pay package that Tesla granted Musk was unparalleled in corporate compensation plan in history, and made the Tesla and SpaceX boss a centi-billionaire and the richest person on the planet.
CNBC has requested comment from Musk, his lawyer and Tornetta’s attorney.
In a tweet late Tuesday afternoon, Musk wrote, « Never incorporate your company in the state of Delaware. »

Call of Duty is Crossing Over With The Walking Dead

0

Call of Duty reveals an exciting collaboration with one of the most popular apocalyptic TV shows ever, The Walking Dead, for Modern Warfare 3.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has revealed another big-time collaboration, this time with AMC’s hit TV show The Walking Dead. Having just launched Season 1 Reloaded, which added two more characters from The Boys, the new 6v6 Rio map, and more, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 seems to be gearing up for its next big season.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has only been out for two and a half months, and it’s already brought in some high-profile characters from the film and TV world. As part of the leadup to Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated sci-fi sequel, Dune: Part Two, Call of Duty added franchise protagonist Paul Atreides, as well as antagonist Feyd-Rautha, to Modern Warfare 3 as purchasable operators. Most recently, Call of Duty’s Season 1 Reloaded saw the return of Amazon’s The Boys with the debut of Firecracker and A-Train in Modern Warfare 3.
As Season 1 of Modern Warfare 3 approaches its conclusion, Call of Duty has announced its next big crossover, this time with the popular zombie apocalypse TV show The Walking Dead. Call of Duty released a YouTube video that recreates The Walking Dead’s classic show opener using shots from what looks to be MWZ’s Urzikstan map with the same grimy sepia filter and iconic music. The trailer included photo appearances of The Walking Dead’s two most integral characters, Rick and Michonne, as well as an appearance from Modern Warfare 3’s own Vladimir Makarov.
The Walking Dead features a wealth of awesome characters to choose from, but seeing that these Call of Duty collabs typically only bring in two operators at a time, it’s fitting that Rick and Michonne will be the ones as leaders of the show’s ensemble. It may be possible that this could become an ongoing partnership with The Walking Dead which sees even more characters from the show join the game’s roster in future seasons, similar to how The Boys returned with A-Train and Firecracker. The trailer also seems to possibly be hinting at some sort of Walking Dead-themed refresh or event coming to MWZ, which would make complete sense, though what exactly that may entail remains a mystery. When Is The Call of Duty Walking Dead Crossover Happening?
The trailer didn’t include any sort of concrete release date for when fans can expect this epic Call of Duty crossover to take place. However, it would be safe to assume that The Walking Dead may be headlining Modern Warfare 3’s Season 2, so fans should keep an eye out for any new Call of Duty info as Season 1 begins to wrap up over the coming weeks.
Released in November of 2023, Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023) continues Captain Price’s story from the 2019 and 2022 games.

Broadway legend Chita Rivera has died at 91, and fans and celebrities alike are sharing tributes on social media.
Celebrity News
“Dance among the stars now, Chita.”
Broadway legend Chita Rivera has died, just a week after her 91st birthday. According to the New York Times, her death was announced by her daughter Lisa Mordente in a statement that gave no further details.
The actor is known for originating the roles of Velma in Chicago and Anita in the first production of West Side Story, among other Broadway feats. She was a ten-time Tony nominee, winning Best Actress in a Musical twice for The Rink in 1984 and Kiss of the Spider-Woman in 1993.
Rivera became the first Latina-American woman to receive the Kennedy Center Honor in 2002, and was awarded with the Tony Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. She was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama in 2009.
Immediately, celebrities and Rivera’s fans shared their tributes on social media.
Rachel Zegler, who played Maria in the 2021 movie adaptation of West Side Story, shared a photo with Rivera on X (formerly Twitter). “To the woman who showed me I could, and believed in me when I did, I already miss you,” she wrote. “Rest in peace, Chita.”
She went on to tell the story of how she first saw Rivera in her 2012 Broadway show The Mystery of Edwin Drood when she was a pre-teen. “That was Anita. THE Anita from the original West Side Story cast album that I had played to death,” she said. Seven years later, they met on set of the remake. “Chita looked at me and said, ‘you are so silly and adorable,’” she recalled. “Life made.”
Ariana DeBose, who reprised Anita in the 2021 film, posted an emotional tribute on Instagram. “She was a force. In truth she made me nervous,” she wrote. “To be in her presence was to behold greatness. I always got the sense that she had great expectations, but none greater than the ones she held herself to.”
Catherine Zeta-Jones, who won an Oscar for playing Velma in the 2002 film adaptation of Chicago, in which Rivera made a cameo, shared her tribute on Instagram. “There are no words to tell you what an incredible impact you have had on my life,” she wrote. “From dreaming of being you as a little girl, then meeting you and then being deeply connected to you by playing the one and only Velma Kelly in Chicago. There will never, ever, be anyone like you Chita, ever.”
Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda called her “the trailblazer for Puerto Rico” on Instagram, sharing the story of how she appeared in his film Tick, Tick… Boom!
“When we filmed the diner scene, she wasn’t available for the shoot dates, so I left a chair empty in the diner for those three days,” he wrote. “Eight months later on our reshoots, she joined us and held court all day. It remains one of the all time joys of my life. She was magnificent. She IS magnificent, not ready for the past tense just yet.”
Fellow Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth shared how much she looked up to Rivera. “There was only you. Then everyone else,” she wrote. “I looked up to you and always will admire you as a talent and mostly as a person! A kick butt woman you were. All the rest of us just wanna be you.”
Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo paid his respects, writing, “A life well lived. An Icon. A friend. Well done Chita Rivera.” Only Murders in the Building actor Jackie Hoffman shared her special memory of Rivera. “My personal experience with Chita Rivera was when she came to Hairspray and said to me: you are so f*cking funny,” she quipped.
Rivera’s The Rink co-star, Seinfeld alum Jason Alexander, posted his own photo with Rivera, calling her “one of the greatest spirits and colleagues” he’s ever known. “She set the bar in every way,” he wrote. “I will cherish her always. Dance in heaven, my friend.”
Mia Farrow called her “an authentic Broadway icon,” sharing a throwback photo. “No one who was fortunate enough to have seen any of her performances, will ever forget the experience,” she wrote. “Thank you to the magnificent, irreplaceable Chita Rivera.” Choreographer Debbie Allen shared a throwback photo of the two, calling her “my mentor, my friend, our goddess of inspiration and joy.”
Star Trek alum George Takei shared a photo from his last encounter with Rivera, when he visited her backstage at her show The Visit. “What a legend on stage,” he wrote. “What a force of pure talent and energy. She will be truly, truly missed. Dance among the stars now, Chita.”

One UI 6.1 Cripples one of Android’s Best Features by Default

0

One UI 6.1 defaults to disabling Android’s notification channels feature, impacting user notification management on Samsung devices.
Samsung continues to expand its product family. In line with this, the company recently introduced the Galaxy S24 series. Moreover, what made the event remarkable was not only the company’s new flagship smartphones but also the debut of One UI 6.1. While the Samsung’s new Android 14 based UI adds many new features to Galaxy phones, it also disables one of Android’s best notification features by default. Here are the details…One UI 6.1 Update Changes to Android’s Notification Channels by Default
The Samsung One UI 6.1 update disables one of Android’s best notification features by default. This feature, called notification channels, lets users manage different notification types for specific apps. Unfortunately, in One UI 6.1, this feature is not initially activated by default. This situation could negatively impact Samsung users who receive notifications from various apps, as important ones may get buried or dismissed since users receive all notifications by default.
Additionally, while notification channels can be easily found in the default settings of Android, in One UI 6.1, users need to navigate deeper into the interface to locate the setting. This can be confusing, especially for users who are not very good with technology. For this reason, some users believe that Samsung’s decision to make this change has adversely affected the fundamental functionality of Android. However, rest assured, opening the notification channels feature is not too difficult. To activate notification channels in One UI 6.1, just follow these steps:
By doing this, you can control which types of notifications you receive from specific apps. For example, if you want to get “DM” notifications from a social media app, just toggle the switch next to the DM option.
Alternatively, you can access notification channels through the app’s settings by selecting Manage Channels. This screen displays all the notification channels for the app, giving you the option to enable or disable them as needed. If you’re curious about when your device will receive the One UI 6.1 update, click here.

Chita Rivera, Broadway's 'First Great Triple Threat,' dies at 91

0

The three-time Tony Award-winning Broadway legend created indelible roles: Anita in West Side Story, Rose in Bye Bye Birdie and Velma Kelly in Chicago.
Chita Rivera, who appeared in more than 20 Broadway musicals over six decades has died, according to her daughter, Lisa Mordente. The three-time Tony Award-winning Broadway legend created indelible roles — Anita in West Side Story, Rose in Bye Bye Birdie, Velma Kelly in Chicago, and Aurora in Kiss of the Spiderwoman. She was 91.
Rivera « was everything Broadway was meant to be, » says Laurence Maslon, co-producer of the 2004 PBS series, Broadway: The American Musical. « She was spontaneous and compelling and talented as hell for decades and decades on Broadway. Once you saw her, you never forgot her. »
You might think Chita Rivera was a Broadway baby from childhood – but she wasn’t. Born Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero in Washington, D.C., she told an audience at a Screen Actors Guild Foundation interview that she was a tomboy and drove her mother crazy: « She said, ‘I’m putting you in ballet class so that we can rein in some of that energy.’ So I am very grateful. »
Rivera took to ballet so completely that she got a full scholarship to the School of American Ballet in New York. But when she went with a friend to an audition for the tour of the Broadway show Call Me Madam, Rivera got the job. Goodbye ballet, hello Broadway. In 1957, she landed her breakout role, Anita in West Side Story, with a score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.
« Hearing ‘America’ was just mind-boggling, with that rhythm, » Rivera told NPR in 2007 for the musical’s 50th anniversary. « I just couldn’t wait to do it. It was such a challenge. And, being Latin, you know, it was a welcoming sound. »
West Side Story allowed Rivera to reveal not only her athletic dancing chops, but her acting and singing chops. She recalls Leonard Bernstein teaching her the score himself: « I remember sitting next to Lenny and his starting with ‘A Boy Like That,’ teaching it to me and me saying, ‘I’ll never do this, I can’t hit those notes, I don’t know how to hit those notes.’ «
But she did hit them, and being able to sing, act and dance made her a valuable Broadway commodity, said Maslon. « She was the first great triple threat. Broadway directors like Jerome Robbins and Bob Fosse saw the need to have performers who could do all three things and do them really well. »
And, from 1960 to 2013, she headlined some big hits — as well as some major flops. In 1986, Rivera was in a serious taxi accident. Her left leg was shattered, and the doctors said she’d never dance again, but she did – just differently.
« We all have to be realistic, » she told NPR in 2005. « I don’t do flying splits anymore. I don’t do back flips and all the stuff that I used to do. You want to know something? I don’t want to. »
But her stardom never diminished. And the accolades flowed: she won several Tony Awards, including one for lifetime achievement, a Kennedy Center honor, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Rivera didn’t do much television or film – she was completely devoted to the stage, says Maslon.
« That’s why they’re called Broadway legends, » he says. « Hopefully you get to see them live because you’ll never get to see them in another form in quite the same way. »
