Apple Vision Pro gets its first proper « work » app with Zoom
Your weekly Zoom meetings are about to go to a whole new dimension thanks to a new partnership with Apple.
The tech giant has announced an official Zoom app for its Apple Vision Pro device, allowing users to collaborate in what it says is a more real-world, immersive environment – and all you need is a $3,499 (minimum) headset.
Available with the Apple Vision Pro on its February 2 launch date, Zoom says the app will help workers distributed around the world or in different offices feel more connected and included when video conferencing, and includes a number of its key features, as well as some new tools especially designed for the device.Zoom on Apple Vision Pro
In a blog post announcing the news, Zoom said the launch will, « propel the company into the new world of spatial computing, giving users new ways to feel more connected with others ».
“Zoom on Apple Vision Pro helps teammates stay connected no matter when and where they work, or how they communicate and collaborate,” said Smita Hashim, chief product officer at Zoom.
“The integration of Zoom on Apple Vision Pro and visionOS extends our platform promise of allowing participants the ultimate meeting experience from anywhere and delivers on our commitment of seamless collaboration and communication.”
The launch brings in a couple of new features designed specifically for the Apple Vision Pro that look to take advantage of the device’s new capabilities.
This includes a fully immersive, spatial experience allowing users to feel like they really are in the same room as their colleagues, without the need for any extra equipment or setup. Zoom also says its Personas feature gives users an « authentic » representation of themselves on the call, including replicating facial and hand movements to be seen by other participants, giving a much closer connection.
Users will also be able to share 3D objects in much more detail, with the Apple Vision Pro allowing wearers to get a new perspective on items. Integration with Zoom Team Chat is possible too, as well as the ability to pin up to five Zoom Meeting participants anywhere in the user’s physical space to feel more connected.
The news is the latest collaboration between the tech giant and Zoom, which in December 2023 also announced a new Zoom app for Apple TV, allowing users little escape from their calls.More from TechRadar Pro

Corsair Unveils Elite MP600 SSD To Give Your Gaming PC And PS5 Console A Storage Boost

In a world flush with solid state drive (SSD) options, Corsair just added to the pile with the introduction of its MP600 Elite, an intriguing storage line that appears to strike a nice balance between price and performance (the specs are a level above the regular MP600, which we’ll get to in a moment). It’s versatile too, with Corsair pitching the MP600 Elite as being suitable for gaming desktops, laptops, and PlayStation 5 consoles. The same can be said about a lot of SSDs these days, but hey, the more the merrier, right? In this case, you’re looking at an M.2 2280 form factor SSD that pairs Toshiba’s 162-layer 3D triple-level cell (TLC) BiCS6 NAND with Phison’s DRAM-less E27T (PS5027-E27-61) controller. Forgoing DRAM is can hurt performance in some instances, but it can also reduce costs.Speaking of performance, the MP600 Elite’s rated numbers don’t look shabby at all. According to Corsair, the 2TB model can achieve up to 7,000MB/s for sequential reads and up to 6,500MB/s for sequential writes, while the 1TB model offers the same read performance and only slightly slower write performance at 6,200MB/s. Random reads and write speeds are rated at up to 1,00,000 IOPS and 1,200,000 IOPS, respectively. Those are the only two capacities available at the outset, though Corsair says it intends on launching beefier 4TB models in April. We presume the specs will be similar to the 2TB model, if not better (the best performance in any given SSD line tends to come from the higher capacity drives).Corsair is offering the MP600 Elite with or without a black aluminum heatsink. Additionally, there’s a version Corsair says has been « specifically engineered for use in Sony’s latest console, » which boils down to a low-profile white aluminum heatink that’s compatible with both the PS5 and PS5 Slim. Here’s a look at pricing on Amazon…1TB Corsair MP600 Elite (no heatink):$89.992TB Corsair MP600 Elite (no heatsink):$164.991TB Corsair MP600 Elite w/ Black Heatsink:$94.992TB Corsair MP600 Elite w/ Black Heatsink:$169.991TB Corsair MP600 Elite for PS5:$94.992TB Corsair MP600 Elite for PS5:$169.99
These are competitive launch prices, and we wouldn’t be surprised if street pricing for the MP600 Elite ended up dropping below MSRP, as often happens in the storage space. We also have to give Corsair kudos for resisting the temptation to charge a big premium for the models with a heatsink (they’re only $5 more than the non-heatsink variants), and especially the PS5 versions, which cost the same as their standard heatsink counterparts.

House GOP prepares to impeach Homeland Security chief over handling of U.S. border

0

Republicans on the Committee are expected to approve the articles along party lines on Tuesday, setting up a vote on the full House floor as early as this week.
The House Committee on Homeland Security is considering articles of impeachment for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of the influx of migrants crossing the U.S. border with Mexico.
Republicans on the committee are expected to approve the articles along party lines on Tuesday, setting up a vote on the full House floor as early as this week. The two articles accuse Mayorkas of « willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law » in enforcing border policy and « breach of public trust. »
If the GOP-controlled House does approve the articles of impeachment, the process would then move to the Senate for a trial on whether to convict Mayorkas and remove him from office. It is highly unlikely that the Democratic-controlled Senate will convict Mayorkas–a process that would require the support of two-thirds of senators.
Mayorkas defended his actions, and the actions of his agency in a letter sent to the committee on Tuesday. He argued that Congress has failed to provide the administration the tools and legal authority needed to address the issues at the border.
« We need a legislative solution and only Congress can provide it, » Mayorkas said in the letter. « I have been privileged to join a bipartisan group of United States Senators these past several months to provide technical and operational expertise in support of their efforts to strengthen our country’s border security. These efforts would yield significant new enforcement tools and make a substantial difference at our border. »
Committee Republicans argue Mayorkas has not cooperated with their impeachment investigation and dismissed his statement as inadequate.
« This is not about policy differences at all, House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green of Tennessee said, « it goes far deeper. » He summed up the GOP case against the DHS secretary, saying, « Secretary Mayorkas has put his political preferences above following the law. »
The committee is expected to advance the articles of impeachment on Tuesday. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has not committed to an exact time for a vote on the House floor but he has committed to moving swiftly once the committee completes its work.

Moment Israeli commandos dressed as Muslim women and doctors storm West Bank hospital, killing 3 terrorists in 10 minutes

Heavily armed Israeli commandos disguised as Muslim women and doctors raided a West Bank hospital early Tuesday — shooting dead three suspected terrorists in just 10 minutes.
This is the moment heavily armed Israeli commandos disguised as Muslim women and doctors raided a West Bank hospital early Tuesday — shooting three suspected terrorists dead in just 10 minutes.
The dramatic surveillance video from Ibn Sina hospital in the town of Jenin shows about a dozen Israeli undercover special forces soldiers dressed as Muslim women in headscarves or hospital workers in scrubs or white doctor coats rushing through a hallway with assault rifles drawn.
One of the Israeli soldiers is in a surgical mask and carrying a rifle in one arm and a folded wheelchair in the other.
Another, dressed in all black, pats down a man kneeling against a wall with his hands clasped behind his head.
Other graphic images released by Palestinian news media showed a blood-soaked pillow with a bullet hole on a hospital bed and a foldout armchair covered with blood.
The Israeli military said the trio of Palestinians fatally shot during the raid were using the hospital as a hideout — and that one of them was a Hamas member who had smuggled weapons and ammunition to others for a future terrorist attack “inspired by the Oct. 7 massacre.”
Hospital officials claimed the Israeli undercover forces broke into the medical complex around 5:30 a.m. local time, headed to the third floor and killed the three men with silenced pistols.
“They executed the three men as they slept in the room. They executed them in cold blood by firing bullets directly into their heads inside the room where they were being treated,” said Niji Nazzal, the hospital’s medical director.
One of those killed was identified as 27-year-old Mohammed Jalamneh, who the Israeli military said was planning the imminent attack.
Hamas confirmed that Jalamneh was a member of the group and decried his killing as a “cowardly assassination.”
The two others, brothers Basel and Mohammed Ghazawi, were hiding inside the hospital and were involved in past terror attacks, Israel claimed.
The Israeli military did not provide details on how the three were killed. Its statement said Jalamneh was armed with a pistol, but there was no mention of a gun battle. The entire operation was said to have taken about 10 minutes.
Ghazzawi was in the hospital for treatment after being paralyzed from the waist down when he was wounded by shrapnel during a clash between Israeli forces and Palestinians in late October, according to hospital sources.
Ghazzawi was wheelchair-bound, having lost the use of his legs, and his brother Mohammad was staying with him to help out, hospital sources said.
Another Palestinian terrorist group, Islamic Jihad, claimed the two brothers as its members.
Ibn Sina Hospital rep Tawfiq al-Shobaki alleged that the Israeli squad attacked doctors, nurses and hospital security during the operation.
“What happened is a precedent,” he said. “There was never an assassination inside a hospital. There were arrests and assaults, but not an assassination.”
Palestinian Health Minister Mai Alkaila denounced the incident as a war crime and urged the United Nations and international rights groups to crack down on such actions by the Israeli military.

Yle.
