What’s the Real Difference Between the iPhone Air and iPhone 16?

0

Do you want a thin iPhone? Just know you may be giving up on other features.
Thin phones are in. The iPhone Air (not the iPhone 17 Air, as rumors previously suggested) will be the thinnest iPhone ever, or at least that’s what Apple claimed at its “Awe Dropping” product debut Tuesday. Whether that matters to you depends on the size of your pocket, though. If you were wondering just how this compares to the last-gen iPhone 16, we have most of the specs necessary to offer a point of comparison. The iPhone Air effectively replaces the usual Plus model in the latest smartphone lineup. If you were thinking about jumping on the upgrade, perhaps you should hold your horses and consider if you’ll be giving anything up for the sake of a cake-cutting iPhone.
The closest comparison to what you can get in the U.S. is the $1,100 Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. That device’s 5.8mm thickness is slim enough to cut a slice of pie, but it also gives up flagship-level battery life with its 3,900mAh battery. The first iPhone Air will also miss out on the battery life Apple fans have come to expect from their phones. It’s better to think of the Air as an alternative device, a phone with a very specific use case (extremely thin pockets) and a user base with specific needs (wanting to be the cool kids on the block with the latest iPhone design).
But we’ll need to put the new Air through its paces. Perhaps, with time, it will prove as landmark a device as the original MacBook Air was close to two decades ago. Or maybe China-based companies like Tecno will figure out slim devices with good batteries far faster than the engineers in Cupertino. Time—as always—will tell.iPhone Air Versus iPhone 16: Design
Your regular iPhone 16 came with several new features that would normally be relegated to the Pro models. For one, it featured an all-new Camera Control capacitive button used for snapping photos or modifying photo settings without having to touch the screen. It included Apple’s A18 chip, which sported a beefed-up CPU and GPU with enough power to handle on-device ray tracing; being close enough to the iPhone 16 Pro, the device felt like a bargain. The good news is the iPhone Air still has the Camera Control button as well as the Dynamic Island on the main display, rather than any sort of notch.
The iPhone Air boasts Ceramic Shield 2 on the glass and back for better scratch and crack resistance, plus titanium sides that are supposed to keep the device from bending under pressure. Apple’s older phone from 2024 was 7.8mm thin, which is standard for a phone that weighs in at just 170g, or .37 pounds. Few people would call that thick or heavy. Compared to the Air, the 16 is a brick. The iPhone Air weighs in at 165g, or .36 pounds. The difference in weight is so minimal, though at 5.6mm thick, the Air is many times thinner than the 16. If you want a point of comparison, glance at this video showing off the S25 Edge at 5.8mm versus the Air.

The major distinction between the old and new devices is what lies inside. Apple designed the Air from the ground up with new in-house 5G modems and wireless chips. The iPhone 16, by comparison, uses a Qualcomm-made 5G modem. The new device also comes stock with 256GB of storage for its base price, whereas the iPhone 16 makes do with 128GB. While the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 sport a host of calming colors (pink, teal, and ultramarine blue), the base 17 also comes in calming lavender and sage hues. The iPhone Air will seem a little more mundane with black, white, light gold, plus a “sky blue” hue, which I imagine is similar to the gray-blue of the MacBook Air with M4.iPhone Air Versus iPhone 16: Battery
If you’re looking for the main distinction between Apple’s new phone category and its battery. The iPhone 16 was rated for up to 22 hours of battery life in video playback tests, but in real life, we’ve seen the iPhone 16 go for more than a full day after regular use and still have some juice for the following morning. The iPhone 16’s battery capacity sits at 3,561mAh, which doesn’t seem especially high until you consider the limited refresh rate and Apple’s good standby power savings on the base iPhone.
Apple has yet to share precise specs for the iPhone Air’s battery capacity. Instead, the company repeatedly promised the device would have a “full-day” battery life. On the specs page, Apple said the Air managed to hit 27 hours in video playback tests, though only 22 hours when streaming. That’s better than a base iPhone 16, though not nearly as good as the iPhone 16 Plus, which the Air is effectively replacing in Apple’s 2025 iPhone lineup. Apple emphasized all the extra work it did to maximize battery efficiency.

The iPhone Air promises to support a separate “iPhone Air MagSafe Battery” sold separately from the main unit. This battery, which is three-quarters the size of the actual phone, should push the battery life further at the cost of the thin frame. At least, the new device is compatible with the Qi2 standard up to 20W as well as MagSafe.iPhone Air Versus iPhone 16: Camera
The older iPhone contained a 48-megapixel Fusion camera as well as a 12-megapixel ultrawide. The main sensor also enabled 12-megapixel 2x telephoto pictures. The device also made use of the TrueDepth camera for Face ID. The iPhone Air is notable since it contains a single camera bump, just like the iPhone 16e. The new device sports the 48-megapixel Fusion main camera that also allows for 2x, 12-megapixel telephoto shots. Unfortunately, there’s no ultra-wide lens to speak of. The new device can also handle 4K video up to 60 FPS, the same as the iPhone 16.
The Air has one sensor that beats the 16. The slim device sports an 18-megapixel “Center Stage” front camera compared to 12 megapixels on the iPhone 16. Apple suggested users would end up spending more time with the front camera with the inclusion of better image stabilization.iPhone Air Versus iPhone 16: Display
With a 6.3-inch OLED display at 2,556×1,179 resolution, the regular iPhone was still a looker even compared to the larger, higher-resolution Plus model. The device was limited to a 60Hz refresh rate, which miffed some users when comparing their phones to mainline Android devices. Still, that means the device lasts longer compared to other devices.
The iPhone Air is slightly larger at 6.5 inches, less than the iPhone 16 Plus, though it sports a big, 2,736×1,260 resolution screen at 460 PPI, or pixels-per-inch—the same as the older phone models. However, the Air features a much faster screen at a 120Hz refresh rate that can go down to 1Hz if you enjoy an always-on display blazing from your nightstand.

The Air may have a brighter display at both HDR and SDR brightness for viewing outside, though the device is not designed to share screens over USB. Compared to the iPhone 16, which supported DisplayPort over USB-C, the iPhone Air doesn’t.iPhone Air Versus iPhone 16: Chip
The iPhone 16’s A18 chip was one of Apple’s best for the regular iPhone, often meeting benchmarks of the A18 Pro-level chip except in intensive situations, like ray tracing scenarios when gaming. The A18 was built on a six-core CPU and five-core GPU design with a 16-core neural engine.
Not much has changed in configuration, though Apple swears the Air’s A19 Pro is a true next-gen chip despite it all. The A19 Pro uses a six-core CPU with two performance and four efficiency cores, alongside a five-core GPU (the iPhone 17 Pro devices make use of a six-core GPU, which will make them slightly better for graphics tasks). The device still supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing.
The A19 Pro is supposed to make the phone more energy efficient while improving on single-thread performance, which is how Apple is implying it should be able to handle simple tasks faster than before. How well it performs in the field, especially considering its awkward battery life specs, will determine if the thin frame is worth all the other small trade-offs.

Apple Debuts iPhone 17, But Super-Slim iPhone Air Takes Center Stage

0

The Plus is out and the Air is in. Apple’s trim smartphone launches next week alongside the standard iPhone 17 and new 17 Pros.
Apple loves a super-slim smartphone, and it continued that trend today with the iPhone Air, the standout of its newest flagships that replaces the Plus and debuts alongside a standard iPhone 17 and two premium Pro devices.
The full lineup will be available for preorder on Friday, Sept. 12 ahead of a Sept. 19 launch.iPhone Air
The iPhone Air lands at a barely there 5.6 millimeters. (The iPhone 16 is 7.8mm, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max is 8.25mm.) At 6.5 inches, the Air’s screen is still somewhat sizable, however, landing between the 6.3-inch iPhone 17 Pro and 6.9-inch 17 Pro Max.
You’ll find Apple’s ProMotion variable refresh rate display previously limited to Pro models, which can range from 1Hz to save power up to 120Hz for smoother performance.
Despite the slimmer profile, Apple says the iPhone Air will deliver up to 27 hours of battery life with video playback. It’s eSIM-only worldwide to make room for other components, like the new A19 Pro chip with a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU, Apple-built N1 Wi-Fi chip, and updated C1X modem. The N1 supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.
There’s one camera on the back. Apple says it “works like multiple advanced cameras in one,” but we’ll have to put it through its paces to see how that shakes out. There’s a 48MP Fusion main camera and an 18MP Center Stage front camera, which will keep you in view for images and video; a square sensor should provide a wider field of view.
The iPhone Air retains the titanium frame from earlier Pro models and includes an Action Button with Camera Control.
The iPhone Air starts at $999 for 256GB model, making it $100 more expensive than the Plus version it replaces. If you need more space, 512GB ($1,199) and 1TB ($1,399) variants are also available. It comes in space black, cloud white, light gold, and sky blue.iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max
The Pro models get a slight makeover: the titanium frame is out and aluminum is back in. Though the iPhone 16 Pros included an impressive heat-resistant titanium design, they still got warm when we ran benchmarks in testing. Not as hot as the iPhone 15 Pro models, but a return to aluminum and a new internal vapor chamber might put overheating concerns to bed.Recommended by Our Editors
On the back, the bump—or “plateau,” as Apple refers to it—leaves room for a bigger battery and eSIM support. Apple promises up to 39 hours of video playback. For the first time, Apple also added the Ceramic Shield to the back of the phone for added protection.
The Pro and Pro Max come in 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch sizes, respectively, with ProMotion up to 120Hz, an always-on display, and 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
The Pro models also run the A19 Pro chip, but feature a 6-core CPU and 6-core GPU. The N1 is here too, but no Apple-built C1 modem, suggesting it’s sticking with Qualcomm.
Camera upgrades, meanwhile, include a jump from 12MP to 48MP for the telephoto lens on the 48MP Pro Fusion camera system (main, ultra wide, and telephoto), with up to 8x optical zoom at 200mm. It also has the 18MP Center Stage front camera. It will auto-adjust depending on the shot; no need to flip to landscape mode to get everyone in a group selfie.
The iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099 and the iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199 for 256GB, with 512GB, 1TB, and a new 2TB variant available. Get it in deep blue, silver, or a new cosmic orange.iPhone 17
The standard iPhone 17 gets a small display boost from 6.1 to 6.3 inches. You’ll also find Apple’s ProMotion variable refresh rate and an always-on display. It runs the A19 and N1 chips, but no C1 modem. It sticks with an aluminum frame.
Expect up to 30 hours of video playback, up from 22 on the iPhone 16. There’s a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system with up to 2x optical zoom and an 18MP Center Stage front camera. It also gets the square sensor and selfie tricks.
The 256GB iPhone 17 starts at $799 and comes in lavender, mist blue, sage, white, and black.

iPhone 17 vs iPhone 17 Pro: The base iPhone suddenly makes a lot more sense

0

A 120Hz screen, new cameras, more storage, same price: the iPhone 17 sounds almost too good to be true.
Apple’s 2025 iPhones are here, and for the first time in years, the base iPhone feels truly worth its money. In fact, the iPhone 17 sounds like a much better deal than the iPhone 17 Pro. Not only has the base model finally gained a smooth 120Hz ProMotion display, but it also has a new 48 MP ultrawide camera and the same new 18 MP selfie camera as the Pro.
The icing on the cake is that — despite the increased base storage of 256 GB — the iPhone 17 keeps its predecessor’s price of $799, whereas the Pro has jumped to $1099.
For that extra cost, the iPhone 17 Pro introduces a redesigned aluminum build with a sturdier design, a more powerful A19 Pro chip with vapor chamber cooling, and debuts a 48 MP telephoto camera with extended zoom. At $1,099, Apple has positioned the Pro as the creator’s iPhone, while the regular iPhone 17 may finally be enough for everyone else.

The iPhone 17 continues with an aluminum frame and glass back, but introduces Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, which Apple says is three times more scratch resistant than before. The back remains reinforced glass.
The iPhone 17 Pro moves away from last year’s titanium and adopts a new forged aluminum unibody. Apple highlights this as lighter, stronger, and more thermally efficient, as it integrates the vapor chamber cooling system directly into the frame. Unlike the base model, the Pro is protected by Ceramic Shield 2 on both the front and the back, making it more resistant to scratches and cracks.
The Pro also debuts a redesigned rectangular « camera plateau », which houses its triple 48 MP camera system and sets it apart visually from the dual-camera iPhone 17.
When it comes to size and weight, the iPhone 17 comes in at 149.6 × 71.5 × 7.95 mm and weighs 177 grams. The iPhone 17 Pro is slightly taller, wider, and thicker at 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm, and it’s also noticeably heavier at 206 grams.
The iPhone 17 and 17 Pro colors:
iPhone 17: Black, Lavender, Mist Blue, Sage, White
iPhone 17 Pro: Black, Silver, Gold, and a new standout Orange
Display Differences
One of the biggest upgrades this year is that the iPhone 17 now has a 120Hz ProMotion OLED display. Apple withheld this feature for years, leaving the base iPhones stuck at 60Hz, but it’s finally here. The result will be smoother scrolling, animations, and gaming — bringing the regular iPhone up to par with rivals and even the Pro in basic refresh rate.
Both models use 6.3-inch OLED panels with the same resolution (2622 × 1206, 460 ppi) and peak brightness of 3000 nits outdoors, making them much easier to read under sunlight compared to the 2000 nits of the iPhone 16 series. In HDR content, both peak at 1600 nits, and typical brightness remains 1000 nits.
The Pro, however, still pulls ahead with its LTPO technology, allowing the refresh rate to scale down to 1Hz. This unlocks Always-On Display support and greater power efficiency. The base iPhone 17 can hit 120Hz but cannot go as low, so it still lacks Always-On.
The Dynamic Island is unchanged across both phones, and Face ID remains the only biometric option.
Both phones run on Apple’s latest 3nm chips, but the Pro uses the more powerful A19 Pro. The A19 chip inside the iPhone 17 has a 6-core CPU (2 performance, 4 efficiency), a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. The A19 Pro adds a 6-core GPU, giving it more headroom for gaming, creative work, and Apple Intelligence features.
The Pro also gains a vapor chamber cooling system, allowing it to sustain peak performance for longer without overheating — useful for gaming and professional workloads.
The iPhone 17 comes with 8 GB of RAM and storage up to 512 GB storage, while the Pro is equipped with 12 GB of RAM and offers storage up to 1 TB (both start at 256 GB). That makes the Pro better suited for workflows that include larger files.
Another important difference is the USB-C port. The iPhone 17 only supports USB 2 speeds, meaning file transfers are limited. The iPhone 17 Pro supports USB 3 at up to 10Gbps, making it much faster for moving ProRes video or large files.
On the software side, both models ship with iOS 26, which introduces the new Liquid Glass design language, Live Translate, Call Screening, and the first wave of Apple Intelligence features.
Apple has finally upgraded the base iPhone’s secondary camera: the iPhone 17 now has a 48 MP ultrawide alongside its 48 MP main sensor. This should mean sharper detail, better low-light performance, and improved macro photography when shooting up close. On the front, it gets the brand-new 18 MP Center Stage selfie camera, which has a wider field of view, automatic reframing, and improved stabilization for video.
The iPhone 17 Pro steps things up significantly with an all-48 MP triple system that includes a new 48 MP telephoto camera, which allows the Pro to go up to 40×, while the base iPhone 17 is limited to 10×.
For video, both support Dolby Vision HDR, Cinematic mode, Action mode, and Dual Capture. The Pro, however, unlocks more advanced tools: 4K120 ProRes, ProRes RAW, Apple Log, Academy Color Encoding System, and Genlock support — features aimed squarely at professionals.
Both iPhones use stacked battery technology for better energy density and durability. The iPhone 17 comes with a 3,692 mAh battery, while the iPhone 17 Pro is slightly larger at 3,988 mAh (Nano SIM) or 4,252 mAh (eSIM).
Apple rates the iPhone 17 for up to 30 hours of video playback (27 streamed), while the Pro lasts up to 33 hours (30 streamed). These are Apple’s best runtimes yet for this size.
Charging speeds have also improved. With Apple’s new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, both models can reach 50% in about 20 minutes. Wireless charging remains capped at 25W, but both phones now support Qi2, so third-party magnetic chargers can finally match MagSafe’s top speeds.
Both models support reverse wired charging, but still no reverse wireless charging, even on the Pro.
This year software contributes to the battery life too. iOS 26 introduces Adaptive Power Mode, which uses AI to learn user habits and subtly adjust performance and background activity to extend battery life.
Here’s a quick overview of the iPhone 17 vs iPhone 17 Pro specs.
The iPhone 17 finally feels like the iPhone most people wanted years ago. With a 120Hz display, brighter screen, 48 MP ultrawide, and 18 MP Center Stage selfie camera, it no longer lags far behind the Pro. Add in the longer battery life and faster charging, and the $799 model sounds like a much better deal, especially considering the unchanged price tag with double the storage of its predecessor.
The iPhone 17 Pro is still the choice for power users. Its telephoto zoom camera, larger main sensor, A19 Pro chip with vapor chamber cooling, and USB 3 port make it the obvious pick for creators. The advanced video suite (ProRes RAW, Apple Log, Genlock) further solidifies it as the iPhone for professionals.
For most people, though, the regular iPhone 17 seems to cover the essentials so well that the Pro is harder to justify. Unless you need pro-grade video tools, extended zoom, or 1TB of storage, it sounds like the base iPhone 17 will finally do the job — and do it well.

The Zombie on ‘Wednesday’ Was Inspired by Klaus Kinski and Frankenstein

0

Owen Painter, the actor who played Slurp, also discussed the importance of Jell-O brains and self-flagellation.
Wednesday actor Owen Painter recently sat down with Vulture to discuss the human element he brought to his performance as Slurp the zombie—and of course, what it was like eating the disembodied Professor Orloff (Christopher Lloyd)’s brain.
As Painter stated, “I was told to act out ‘You’ve been sitting for a thousand years and your voice box doesn’t work, and water’s going to fix that, so you should have a glass of water across the room, but some stuff is in your way.’ I had so much fun messing around with that and coming up with physical gags and jokes.”
Though Slurp looks like he stepped right out of 1985’s Return of the Living Dead, 1985’s Day of the Dead, or 1985’s House, Painter said his performance was largely influenced by classic depictions of Frankenstein, as well as cult-beloved German actor Klaus Kinski.
”Weirdly, I took a lot. It feels a little funny, because you point to a performance that’s so iconic, and then it’s just what you did. But the person in my mind the most was Klaus Kinski. He is a German actor who worked with Werner Herzog a bunch, and he’s a lunatic. He delivered some of the most gorgeous performances ever. I think he had so much energy in his body. It feels like there’s a current going through his limbs all the time. So I was trying to steal a little bit of that.”
Though Kinski never actually played Frankenstein or his monster, he did play similar roles in 1982’s Android and 1974’s The Lover of the Monster, as well as Nosferatu in 1979’s Nosferatu the Vampyre, Nosferatu a second time in 1988’s Vampire in Venice, and even Renfield in 1970’s Count Dracula.
In the article, Painter stated he channeled the actor in some creative ways. “Because of all of that wandering around and looking stupid, I came up with a sheet of funny jokes that I thought could be in the choreography, and then I had some sessions with the stunt team. They’re so knowledgeable about the athletics of everything. I would be able to bring creative ideas to them, and they would help me fine-tune the movements,” he said. “A lot of it is off the cuff in a really fun way. At one point, I showed up for a day and they just handed me the camera for POV footage. I’m holding a GoPro while I’m punching myself in the face. That was like the best day of work ever.”
As any actor worth their salt will tell you, a good scene partner will naturally elevate their performance, so it’s a bit heartbreaking to learn co-star Lloyd wasn’t actually there the day Slurp ate his character’s brains. “I was bullying a robot all day. Yeah, there was a prop head, but the mechanical bot was there and controlled by people on the crew. I don’t think a lot of it’s in the actual episode, but we had so much fun shoving the robot around. It’s almost kind of tragic. The wheels start squeaking and it feels like it’s a puppy dog.”
Though Lloyd’s head may have cost a fortune, it sounds like his brains did not. According to Painter, he was eating “some Jell-O blood mixture. It just tastes like sugar, kind of gnarly.”

Charlotte train stations still unprotected despite Dem mayor’s promise after murder of Ukrainian refugee: ‘She’s a full of s–t person’

0

Riders were outraged after the Charlotte train where Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was slaughtered had no additional security presence on Tuesday — a day after the city’s Democratic mayor promised an « immediate » increase in patrols in response to the shocking murder.
Riders were outraged after the Charlotte train where Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was slaughtered had no additional security presence on Tuesday — a day after the city’s Democratic mayor promised an “immediate” increase in patrols in response to the shocking murder.
“If you’re going to be a person of your word, do it right there and then,” Antwan Whiting, 37, a mover and security guard told The Post while waiting for his train at East/West Boulevard — the same station where Zarutska was stabbed and bled out in front of horrified riders.
“I think she’s a crock of s–t. She’s a full of s–t person. She just wants to stay in office to look good.”
Zarutska, 23, was stabbed to death on a Lynx Blue Line train Aug. 22 by Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, a deranged vagrant with a history of violence and mental illness who was free on cashless bail after his latest arrest, cops said.
Though the story caused barely a blip for weeks, shocking newly released video propelled the case to national attention — just as Charlotte voters headed to the polls for Tuesday’s primary election to decide whether to give Mayor Vi Lyles a shot at a record fifth term in office.
Just weeks after an initial statement to a local TV reporter in which the four-term incumbent seemed to portray Brown as a victim of the system, Lyles issued a stunning reversal Monday night — pledging Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) security and cops would be “re-deployed for a stronger presence” on Blue Line train platforms “effective immediately.”
But no such presence was spotted as The Post rode the train Tuesday morning, including at the East/West Boulevard Station, and where Zarutska boarded the train after her shift at Zepeddie’s Pizzeria.
“It’s completely unacceptable, and the mayor should step down or be fired. The mayor is just as much a part of the young lady from Ukraine’s murder as the murderer,” retired paratrooper Jerome Almon, 60, said at the Charlotte Transportation Center Station.
He also lambasted Lyles for “making excuses for a 14-time arrested criminal,” in a reference to Brown’s lengthy rap sheet.
“I grew up in Detroit during its worst era. I can just tell you as a paratrooper and an individual who spent a year on the war on the frontline, I am more afraid of being on this platform at night than I am walking the streets of Detroit at its worst period of time,” he said.
“There should be protection. There is no protection. Look right now. Show me a guard. Show me a police officer. There is no one here.”
A single Charlotte-Mecklenburg police car was spied parked outside the station, but nowhere near close enough to respond should another attack like last month’s deadly stabbing take place on the train or platform.
After riding the Blue Line to the last of its 26 stops, a security guard who had been on the train from the beginning said he was on the same route he always works, and hadn’t even heard about Lyles promising more guards would be deployed.
The only security spotted by The Post while riding at least half of the route were three guards walking on the train platform at Bland Avenue Station, and another pair at the 7th Street Station, who checked a few emergency boxes then walked away.
Rider Sue Withee, 60, said she saw no security whatsoever on her commute, and questioned why the safety of the station is being outsourced to a private security firm.
“I don’t understand why it can’t be city police,” she said.
Mayor Lyles didn’t respond to The Post’s request for comment Tuesday as she conducted last-minute campaigning for her re-election bid.
According to The Assembly NC, the Democrat was likely set to “cruise” to a fifth term, despite two primary challengers who have hit out at the mayor for her tone-deaf statement shifting blame for the murder away from Brown.
Jaraun “Gemini” Boyd, one of two Democrats hoping to unseat Lyles, told WCNC Charlotte that the mayor’s words “reflect a failure of leadership to address the realities of mental illness in our community.”
Delter Kenny Guin III, the other Democrat vying for Lyles’ job, called Zarutska’s murder “a senseless and preventable crime,” promising to implement a zero-tolerance policy for repeat offenders if elected.
“This killer had a clear history as a career criminal that should have been a red flag to any judge and had he been ineligible for parole and no bail for repeat violent offenders, he would have already been in a facility and off the streets,” Guin wrote in a statement.

„Białe grzyby na łące” wyrokiem śmierci. Kobieta nie żyje

0

Wer kam beim Angriff in Katar ums Leben?
