New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson swatted away criticism he received for expressing his condolences to the family of conservative pundit Charlie Kirk, demanding detractors “unfollow” him on social media.
Robinson received some backlash from predominately lefty fans after sharing a photo of Kirk’s wife Erika and their two children and writing, “I feel bad for his family” following the assassination of the Turning Point USA co-founder Wednesday.
The shotblocker then doubled down on Thursday.
“I’m never the type to get into the political field,” said Robinson, according to a post by New York Basketball on X, “but I just don’t get how people get so sensitive and offended about someone else’s opinion or beliefs.”
“I respect your mindset and beliefs but it’s not gone change what I believe and stand for you don’t have to like me you can unfollow, unfriend me whatever you have to do to never see what I do or say I could care less about what you do or think of me!” he added.
“I don’t care if you black, white, green, or have stripes like a damn zebra or even like the same gender, I respect you either way!” Robinson said. “As a father myself, no kid should have to grow up without their father or mother at the end of the day!….I don’t do the things I do for attention or clout…Again, I could care less what people think of me…the ones that know me already know what I stand for!”
Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck Wednesday while speaking on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem. He was rushed to a local hospital before he was pronounced dead.

0

Array

The Telegraph.

Questions linger about alleged shooter’s motivation for killing Charlie Kirk

After a connection to ‘trans ideology’ was retracted, suspect’s background and politics are being pored over
After a connection to ‘trans ideology’ was retracted, suspect’s background and politics are being pored over
Though the suspect in the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk was revealed by authorities on Friday, questions surrounding his identity and motivations have exacerbated intense US political debates in the aftermath of the shooting.
Authorities revealed Kirk’s suspected killer to be Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old man who grew up in Washington, Utah, along the state’s south-western border.
In absence of a clear motive for the slaying, reports have tried to piece together information about Robinson and his background. He is a third-year student in an electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College in the state. Both of his parents are registered Republicans, though his personal political beliefs remain unclear. Now-deleted pictures on social media show Robinson and his family posing with guns.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published on Saturday, Utah’s governor, Spencer Cox, said: “It’s very clear to us and to investigators that this was a person who was deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology.” Cox cited the findings of the ongoing investigation into Robinson and his possible motive but did not provide any further details about how officials arrived at that conclusion.
Those remarks from Cox were published a day after he delivered a speech following Robinson’s arrest where he had a candid moment about Robinson’s identity as a Utahn.
“Bad stuff happens, and for 33 hours, I was praying that if this had to happen here, it wouldn’t be one of us,” Cox said. “That somebody drove from another state, somebody came from another country. Sadly, that prayer was not answered the way I hoped for.”
He went on to explain that it would have been “easier on us” if the suspect weren’t from the community.
“Just because I thought it would make it easier on us to say, ‘Hey, we don’t do that here.’ Indeed, Utah is a special place, we lead the nation in charitable giving, we lead the nation in service every year,” Cox said, tears welling in his eyes. “But it did happen here, and it was one of us.”
After Robinson’s identity was revealed, some conservatives have softened their attacks against Kirk’s alleged murderer as an individual – but continue to leverage anger toward liberals as a group.
Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace of South Carolina tweeted on Wednesday that “it’s time to bring back the death penalty” following Kirk’s murder.
On Friday, Mace said that Kirk “would want us to pray for such an evil and lost individual like Tyler Robinson to find Jesus Christ”.
“We will try to do the same,” she wrote.
She later doubled down on the death penalty, saying: “Some crimes are so evil, the only just punishment is the death penalty.” But, referring to the way the suspect’s father reportedly had a role in turning him over to authorities, she also said: “We are sending prayers and our high regards to Tyler Robinson’s father for doing the right thing.”
Cox’s speech has largely been praised as highlighting unity during a divisive moment, providing a stark contrast to Donald Trump, who considered Kirk a close ally. The president on Friday appeared on Fox & Friends and was asked by host Ainsley Earhardt, “How do we fix this country? How do we come back together?”
“The radicals on the right are radical because they don’t want to see crime,” Trump said. “The radicals on the left are the problem – and they are vicious and horrible and politically savvy. They want men in women’s sports, they want transgender people, they want open borders. The worst thing that happened to this country.”
Conservatives had latched onto reports – that have since been retracted – that the casings for bullets found with the gun that police suspect was used to kill Kirk were engraved with markings indicating “trans ideology”.
“To the surprise of literally no one,” Megyn Kelly said on her show earlier in the aftermath of Kirk’s killing. “There’s one particular group that’s been running around killing Americans in the name of ideology, and it’s transgender activists or individuals, or those who proclaim that they are.”
Once Robinson’s identity was revealed, Kelly speculated that Robinson must have been radicalized after going to college.
“This kid got radicalized, and obviously had a psychotic break … I am disturbed to see that he appears to have come from a loving, intact family,” Kelly said. “If you look at the family social media profile, it looks like a happy family. It looks like a loving mom, and a loving dad. He had two younger brothers, there’s lots of family photos of them going on vacations and family dinners.”
Kelly noted that while authorities will be seeking the death penalty, it is ultimately a “mental health issue” that underpins the “radicalization” of young people who go to college.
Meanwhile, white nationalist Nick Fuentes sought to shut down speculation that Robinson may have been a “Groyper”, a nickname for a follower of Fuentes, after reports on the engravings on the bullets of the alleged killer’s gun led to theorizing on his ideology.
Groypers had long criticized Kirk and trolled speakers at his events because the former perceived the latter to be too politically moderate.
While Fuentes claimed in a social media post that he and his followers were “currently being framed for the murder of Charlie Kirk,” he also said in a streaming video: “I pray to God there is no further violence.”
“To all of my followers, if you take up arms, I disavow you,” Fuentes said. “I disown you in the strongest possible terms.”

Charlie Kirk shooting suspect is in custody. Here's what we know about the investigation.

0

Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday while speaking an event at Utah Valley University.
Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed at Utah Valley University on Wednesday as he addressed a large crowd at an outdoor debate. Officials described it as a « targeted attack », and it drew condemnation from both sides of the political aisle as authorities launched a massive search for the suspect.
On Friday, officials announced they have a person in custody for the fatal shooting. They identified him as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who resides in southern Utah. Robinson was arrested on charges of aggravated murder, obstruction of justice and felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, according to an inmate booking sheet from the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray plans to file formal charges in the case on Tuesday, according to a spokesperson.
Kirk, who co-founded the right-wing advocacy group Turning Point USA, was 31. He is survived by his wife, Erika, and two young children.
Here is what we know so far about the assassination and ongoing investigation. Who is the suspect?
More details about Robinson and what happened before and after the attack are emerging.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Robinson is not a student at Utah Valley University, where the attack took place, and has been living with his family in Washington County, located in the southwestern corner of the state. Family members said Robinson had « become more political » in recent years, the governor said.
Utah State University said Robinson briefly attended the school for one semester in 2021. According to the Utah System of Higher Education, Robinson was a third-year student in the electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College in St. George, Utah.
Robinson’s father owns a business installing kitchen countertops and cabinets and his mother is a licensed social worker, according to public records and their social media accounts. Robinson is the oldest of three brothers.
« They are very supportive parents who loved their boys and are involved in the community », a neighbor who said she knew the Robinson family well but had not seen Robinson in a few years told CBS News. She also said the parents were supportive of the country and of President Trump.
State records show that Robinson registered to vote as unaffiliated. He is listed as an inactive voter in state records, meaning he didn’t vote in the last two elections. He was not old enough to vote in 2020.
FBI Director Kash Patel said he was taken into custody at 10 p.m. local time Thursday night, though Utah officials said it was in the early hours of Friday.
Mr. Trump first broke the news on « Fox and Friends » that someone had been taken into custody.
« With a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody. Everyone did a great job », the president said.
Cox said messages on Discord, an instant messaging and social media platform, that were reviewed by investigators referenced a rifle wrapped in a towel that was left in the woods and engravings on bullets. The messages came from a person named « Tyler » and were shared with an unidentified individual, Cox said.
A spokesperson for Discord later said it removed an account associated with Robinson and said the company will continue to coordinate closely with law enforcement.
The governor said authorities believe Robinson acted alone and said there is currently no information that would lead to additional arrests. He told reporters Friday morning he can’t answer questions about the possible motive of the suspect. How the suspect was captured
Cox said Robinson’s father recognized his son as the subject of photos that were released by law enforcement and urged him to turn himself in.
Robinson admitted to his father that he was the person in the photos, two federal law enforcement sources told CBS News. Robinson said he would rather die by suicide than turn himself in, the federal law enforcement sources said.
Robinson’s father called a youth pastor who knows the 22-year-old and is close to the family, and he and the pastor tried to calm Robinson down. The sources said the pastor, who also serves as a court security officer, called the U.S. Marshals Service and other law enforcement agencies. Marshals then detained Robinson and kept him secure while waiting for the FBI. The FBI later took him into custody.
Investigators reviewed video footage and said they identified Robinson arriving on Utah Valley University’s campus in a gray Dodge Challenger at around 8:29 a.m. local time Wednesday, the day of the shooting, according to the governor. Robinson was wearing a plain maroon T-shirt, light-colored shorts, a black hat with a white logo and light-colored shoes, Cox said.
He is believed to have changed clothing on the roof, where the shot was fired from, before changing back into what he was originally wearing. When investigators encountered Robinson, he was wearing clothing consistent with that outfit, the governor said.Tracking the suspect
On Thursday, Utah Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason described the suspect they were seeking as a male who « blended in » with the college community and appeared to be college age.
The public safety department and the Salt Lake City FBI office posted images of someone they called a « person of interest », showing an individual appearing to wear a dark long-sleeve shirt, a hat and sunglasses. More photos posted later on Thursday showed the person wearing a backpack.
Mason said investigators were able to track the shooter’s movements before and after the assassination.
According to a probable cause statement filed by investigators after Robinson’s arrest, investigators were able to track his movements on campus starting at approximately 11:50 a.m. local time on Wednesday. He was observed entering a building called the Losee Center near where Kirk’s event was taking place, which was the shooting location, and going up to the roof, according to the statement.
Mason said the shooter moved to the other side of the building after firing a single shot, then jumped off and fled into a neighborhood off campus. Investigators contacted homeowners with cameras and witnesses to identify leads, he said.
In a news briefing Thursday evening in Orem, Utah, with Patel in attendance, officials released security video that showed a man — who Mason called a suspect — running across the roof and then climbing down the side of the building immediately after the shooting.
As he climbed off the edge of the building and dropped down, he « left some palm impressions, some smudges, some places we’re looking to collect DNA », along with a shoe print that indicated he was wearing Converse tennis shoes, Mason told reporters while showing the video.
« It’s important to note his black t-shirt, his black pants, and there appears to be some white on the soles of those Converse tennis shoes », Mason said. « Those are all identifiable items that we’re looking for. »
After dropping off the building, the video showed the man moving across a grassy area before entering traffic. Mason said he crossed the street into a wooded area, where the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting was later found.
The FBI said it was offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information that leads law enforcement to identify and arrest the person or people involved in Kirk’s assassination. Patel said authorities had received more than 11,000 leads as of Friday morning.Gun and bullet casings recovered
FBI special-agent-in-charge Robert Bohls said Thursday that investigators recovered a « high-powered, bolt-action rifle », which they believe was the weapon used in the assassination. It was found in a wooded area where the shooter fled and was wrapped in a towel, according to Bohls. The rifle was determined to be a Mauser .30-06-caliber bolt-action rifle, according to the probable cause statement.
Cox said that there were inscriptions on the casings of the bullet that was fired, as well as on the casings of three bullets that were not fired.
According to the probable cause statement, the fired bullet casing contained the inscription, « Notices Buldge OWO what’s this? » An unfired bullet casing read, « hey fascist! CATCH! » followed by an up arrow symbol, a right arrow symbol and three down arrow symbols. And a second unfired casing read, « O Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Ciao, ciao! » A third unfired casing said, « If you read This, you are GAY Lmao. »
Cox didn’t speculate on the meaning of the inscriptions.
Investigators also have a footwear impression, palm print and forearm imprints that will be analyzed, the FBI official said.Timeline of « targeted attack »
The event where Kirk was speaking was scheduled to begin in the UVU courtyard at noon.
A CBS News review of livestream footage and video metadata indicates Kirk was shot around 12:23 p.m., which is also when the FBI’s Patel said Kirk was shot. He was struck in the neck by a single gunshot.
A map produced by CBS News’ Confirmed team shows where Kirk was when he was shot — in the central courtyard of Utah Valley University, which is surrounded by campus buildings.
A university spokeswoman said Wednesday that they believed the shot was fired from the Losee Center. A law enforcement source told CBS News that the gunman appeared to have fired from the building’s roof.
The FBI released a video — timestamped at 12:23 p.m. local time — that appears to show a person climbing off a roof at Utah Valley University and fleeing the scene. Dispatch audio reviewed by CBS News described a person on the roof of a nearby building wearing black clothing and carrying a long rifle.
Video captured at 2:37 p.m. shows officers searching an area around a quarter mile north of the campus.
At 2:40, more than two hours after the shooting, Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social that Kirk had died.
While authorities have not specified a potential motive for the shooting, Mason said they believe it was a « targeted attack toward one individual. » Only one shot was fired, and Kirk was the only victim, the commissioner said.
Cox called the shooting « a political assassination », while Mr. Trump, in a video posted to Truth Social, blamed it on « radical left political violence », which he said « has hurt too many innocent people and taken too many lives. » Charlie Kirk’s influence in politics
Kirk was shot while he was speaking at a « Prove Me Wrong » debate, a trademark event for Kirk’s Turning Point USA, which is a conservative organization focused on young people. He would hold political debates with a group that usually consisted of left-leaning attendees.
Kirk had visited the Utah university as part of a nationwide tour of college campuses that was scheduled to continue for the next two months. About 3,000 people attended the outdoor event where he was assassinated, the Utah Department of Public Safety said in a statement.
Mr. Trump called Kirk legendary, saying, « No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. »
Kirk was a close Trump ally and was credited with galvanizing younger voters during his campaign. He made it his mission to engage more young people in politics and register them to vote. Kirk was also a close friend of the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr.
Kirk was the host of « The Charlie Kirk Show », a daily conservative talk radio show and amassed millions of followers on social media.
Kirk’s politics, however, weren’t without controversy. He pushed false claims about voter fraud after Mr. Trump lost the 2020 presidential election, stoked skepticism about the COVID-19 pandemic and spread anti-trans rhetoric. He also amplified the « Great Replacement » conspiracy, which is based on the belief that there’s a plot to replace White people with minorities.
He was a friend of JD Vance, who said Kirk advocated « in public and private » for Mr. Trump to pick him as his running mate last year.
« So much of the success we’ve had in this administration traces directly to Charlie’s ability to organize and convene », Vance said after Kirk was killed. « He didn’t just help us win in 2024, he helped us staff the entire government. »

Democratic Lawmaker Reveals 'Violent' Death Threats After Plea to Trump

0

The president hit out at « radicals on the left » following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Representative Seth Moulton, a Massachusetts Democrat, shared on social media on Friday some of what he described as « violent and graphic threats » that he said his office received after calling on President Donald Trump to join « level-headed Republicans in condemning political violence, not inciting it further. »Why It Matters
On Wednesday, Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk, an influential conservative commentator, was fatally shot at Utah Valley University (UVU) campus. Police on Friday arrested 22-year-old suspect Tyler Robinson and said they recovered bullet casings inscribed with anti-fascist messages as well as a gun from near the scene.
Over the past 15 months, the United States has seen a spate of attacks aimed at politicians or other public figures. This has included the fatal shooting of a Democratic lawmaker and her husband in Minnesota in June, the fatal attack on two Israeli embassy employees in May and the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City in December 2024.
Trump, then the presumptive Republican presidential candidate, narrowly survived an assassination attempt in July 2024 after being shot by Thomas Matthew Crooks and prosecutors allege 58-year-old Ryan Routh made a second attempt two months later in September, though he has pled not guilty to related criminal charges. What To Know
On Friday, Moulton shared a series of hostile messages he received on various social media platforms via his X account.
« My office has received an extraordinary number of violent and graphic threats yesterday and today from right-wing individuals online and over the phone—directed toward me, my family, and my staff—after I pointed out the simple fact that President Trump should join Speaker [Mike] Johnson and other level-headed Republicans in condemning political violence, not inciting it further », the congressman wrote.
Moulton continued: « Republicans need to condemn violence committed by the right, just as I and many other Democrats condemn violence by the left. »
In a Wednesday address from the Oval Office following Kirk’s assassination, Trump said, « For years those on the radical left have compared wonderful Americans like Charlie to Nazis and the world’s worst mass murderers and criminals. This kind of rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism that we’re seeing in our country today, and it must stop right now. »
Meanwhile, comments sent to Moulton on social media, which the congressman shared, included one person commenting: « I hope you’re ready for the civil war this is coming. you WILL LOSE AGAIN. »
Another said: « You are a coward piece of ****. I hope your daughters go thru what Charlie’s daughters are. »
A third wrote: « I hope you and your family get what you deserve. »
On Thursday, Moulton appeared on CNN where he condemned the shooting of Kirk and also urged Trump to speak out against violence against the left. A clip of the interview was shared on Moulton’s X profile where it received over 1 million views.
« I’m happy to stand here as a Democrat and absolutely condemn the violence on the left, I have no hesitation in doing so, but people like [House Republican] Warren Davidson and Donald Trump need to condemn the violence on the right as well », Moulton said while appearing on CNN.
He added: « Not defend the attackers on January 6, not lower the flag across the nation for conservative activist Charlie Kirk but refuse to lower the flag when a Minnesota lawmaker was murdered in her home. »What People Are Saying
President Donald Trump said on Friday morning during an appearance on Fox News’ Fox & Friends: « I tell you something that is going to get me in trouble, but I couldn’t care less.
« The radicals on the right oftentimes are radical because they don’t want to see crime. The radicals on the left are the problem—and they are vicious and horrible and politically savvy. They want men in women’s sports, they want transgender for everyone, they want open borders. The worst thing that happened to this country. »
Former President Barack Obama wrote on X following Kirk’s assassination: « We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy. Michelle and I will be praying for Charlie’s family tonight, especially his wife Erika and their two young children. »
Former Vice President Kamala Harris wrote on X: « Let me be clear: Political violence has no place in America. I condemn this act, and we all must work together to ensure this does not lead to more violence. »What Happens Next?
Political tensions in the nation are likely to remain high following last year’s presidential election in which both main candidates suggested the other was a threat to democracy. Meanwhile, police and the FBI will be working to try and ensure these tensions don’t spill over into more violence.
