Wieczorem w rozmowach wezmą udział liczni szefowie państw i rządów europejskich, a także najwyżsi rangą przedstawiciele UE i NATO » – podał w komunikacie prasowym Stefan Kornelius.

Witkoff będzie w Berlinie
W imieniu Kijowa negocjacje prowadzili do tej pory sekretarz Rady Bezpieczeństwa Narodowego Ukrainy Rustem Umerow i szef Sztabu Generalnego Andrij Hnatow.

Walki trwają, a Rosja nieustannie gnębi ludność Ukrainy atakami na osiedla i infrastrukturę cywilną, a Ukraina atakuje infrastrukturę miltarną i przemysową Rosji.

Gunmen kill at least 11 people during a Jewish event on Sydney's Bondi Beach

SYDNEY (AP) — Two gunmen shot dead at least 11 people on Sunday during a Jewish holiday celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, Australian authorities said, declaring it a terrorist attack. One gunman was fatally shot by police and the second arrested.
Two gunmen shot dead at least 11 people on Sunday during a Jewish holiday celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, Australian authorities said, declaring it a terrorist attack. One gunman was fatally shot by police and the second arrested.
The suspect was in critical condition, authorities said. At least 29 people were confirmed wounded, including two police officers, said Mal Lanyon, the police commissioner for New South Wales state, where Sydney is located.
Other WRAL Top Stories
The massacre followed a wave of antisemitic attacks that have roiled Australia over the past year, although the authorities didn’t suggest those episodes and Sunday’s mass shooting were connected. They said one of the gunmen was known to the security services.
“This attack was designed to target Sydney’s Jewish community,” the state’s Premier Chris Minns said. The massacre was declared a terrorist attack due to the event targeted and weapons used, Lanyon said.
Hundreds had gathered for the gathering at Bondi Beach called Chanukah by the Sea, which was celebrating the start of the Hanukkah Jewish festival.
Chabad identified one of the dead as Rabbi Eli Schlanger, assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi and a key organizer of the event, who has worked in the Bondi area for more than 18 years.
Chabad is an Orthodox Jewish movement that is known for its outreach to non-religious Jews. It runs scores of centers around the world that are popular with Jewish travelers and often sponsors large public events during major Jewish holidays.
Dramatic footage apparently filmed by a member of the public and broadcast on Australian television channels showed someone appearing to tackle and disarm one of the gunmen, before pointing the man’s weapon at him.
Lanyon said the death toll was “fluid” and that wounded people were still arriving at hospitals.
Lachlan Moran, 32, from Melbourne, was waiting for his family nearby when he heard shots, he told The Associated Press. He dropped the beer he was carrying for his brother and ran.
“You heard a few pops, and I freaked out and ran away. . I started sprinting. I just had that intuition. I sprinted as quickly as I could », Moran said. He said he heard shooting off and on for about five minutes.
“Everyone just dropped all their possessions and everything and were running and people were crying and it was just horrible », Moran said.
Grace, 30, from Melbourne, who declined to give her last name, and her partner Joel Sargent, 30, told the AP they were in their hotel room when they heard a banging sound and looked out of their window to see people running down the street, hiding behind trees and cars.
“People were screaming, and the gun sounded so loud », Grace said. « It was constant; it would have been over 50 (shots), easily.”
Police said their operation was “ongoing » and that a “number of suspicious items located in the vicinity” were being examined by specialist officers, including an improvised explosive device found in one of the suspect’s cars. Emergency services were called to Campbell Parade about 6.45 p.m. responding to reports of shots being fired.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters in Canberra that he was “devastated” by the massacre.
“This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy, a celebration of faith, an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation,” Albanese said. “There is no place for this hate, violence and terrorism in our nation.”
Albanese said the authorities were working to identify everyone involved in the attack.
“Let me be clear we will eradicate it amidst this vile act of violence and hate will emerge a moment of national unity where Australians across the board will embrace their fellow Australians of Jewish faith,” he said. “The evil that was unleashed at Bondi Beach today is beyond comprehension, and the trauma and loss that families are dealing with tonight is beyond anyone’s worst nightmare.”
Australia, a country of 28 million people, is home to about 117,000 Jews, according to official figures. Antisemitic incidents including assaults, vandalism, threats and intimidation surged more than threefold in the country during the year after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, the government’s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism Jillian Segal reported in July.
Throughout last summer, the country was rocked by spate of antisemitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne. Synagogues and cars were torched, businesses and homes have been graffitied and Jews were attacked in those cities, where 85% of the nation’s Jewish population live.
Albanese in August blamed Iran for two of the attacks and cut diplomatic ties to Tehran. The authorities didn’t make such claims about Sunday’s massacre.
Meanwhile, Israel urged Australia’s government to address crimes targeting Jews.
“The heart of the entire nation of Israel misses a beat at this very moment,” Israeli President Isaac Herzog said. “We repeat our alerts time and time again to the Australian government to seek action and fight against the enormous wave of antisemitism which is plaguing Australian society.”
Mass shooting deaths in Australia are extremely rare. A 1996 massacre in the Tasmanian town of Port Arthur, where a lone gunman killed 35 people, prompted the government to drastically tighten gun laws and made it much more difficult for Australians to acquire firearms.
Significant mass shootings this century included two murder-suicides with death tolls of five people in 2014, and seven in 2018, in which gunmen killed their own families and themselves.
In 2022, two police officers were shot and killed by Christian extremists at a rural property in Queensland state. The three shooters in that incident, conspiracy theorists who hated the police, were also shot and killed by officers after a six-hour siege in the region of Wieambilla, along with one of their neighbors.

4 Iconic Windows Apps That Quietly Faded Into History

0

Some of the most iconic Windows apps like Internet Explorer and MSN have been retired a while ago. History explains why they are no longer available.
Windows has become the most-used desktop and laptop operating system since its first release in 1985. Its user-friendly interface had intuitively designed windows, icons, and menus that played a significant role in ushering in the era of personal computing.
But what has made Windows so popular isn’t just the operating system itself. The software that accompanies the OS is where users really get to interact with their PC or laptop, with apps for communication, creativity, entertainment, and productivity available right out of the box. Of course, technology moves quickly, and with every software update, with every major Windows release, the apps users have come to love are at risk of being replaced. Over the years, several apps have been discontinued despite their popularity, and many have simply been updated or rebranded without much notice. Here are four such iconic Windows apps that you can now only find in the history books.MSN Messenger
Before texting and social media dominated our communication methods, MSN Messenger established itself as the digital hangout for millions of users. It was launched in 1999, and over the next few years, it amassed a total user base of 330 million people. MSN Messenger allowed people to chat in real time, send files back and forth, make voice and video calls, and even see when their friends came online. It was particularly popular among young people, as users could create personalized profiles with custom display names and status messages. A library of emoticons was also available for users to digitally express themselves. Such features are commonplace in contemporary messaging software, like Slack and Microsoft Teams, but in the early 2000s, they were groundbreaking.
However, the 2000s also saw the rise of social media, with MySpace and eventually Facebook offering other features and connectivity to rival MSN Messenger. Smartphones were also gaining traction as everyday devices, and after the first iPhone was launched in 2007, users had a wide variety of affordable and free options for staying in touch with friends, family, and colleagues. Microsoft attempted to modernize the platform by rebranding MSN Messenger as Windows Live Messenger, but millions of users had already moved on, and the changes failed to attract a new audience. Microsoft officially started phasing out the software in 2013 by integrating it into Skype, and Skype itself was then discontinued in 2025.Windows Movie Maker
Nowadays, you can edit videos on your iPhone or Android device, but in the early 2000s, it required a desktop or laptop computer. In September 2000, Microsoft brought video editing capabilities to the masses with Windows Movie Maker, a piece of software that came bundled with Windows Millennium (Windows Me). The software allowed users to import video clips using digital cameras that are old by today’s standards and provided a wide range of editing features without the need for expensive, professional video editing equipment. Similar to the concept of Apple iMovie, which was released around the same time, Windows Movie Maker aimed to put storytelling with a camera into the hands of everyday people.
With the rise of high-speed internet connections and platforms like YouTube gaining popularity on the internet, Windows Movie Maker users had plenty of ways to distribute their video creations. Because it was easy to use and free as part of the Windows operating system, Movie Maker was accessible to millions, and likely an important cog in the workflow for countless cat videos, home videos, and early internet viral clips. Microsoft changed Movie Maker’s name to Windows Live Movie Maker in 2009, and with new video format standards and plenty of free video editing options on the market, Microsoft officially ended support for the software in 2017.Microsoft Encarta
While today there is a near-endless amount of information accessible to anyone with a keyboard and an internet connection, there was a time when all of that information was only available offline. You could, of course, go to a library to track things down, but you could also turn to Microsoft Encarta. Initially distributed as a CD-ROM application, Encarta was a multimedia encyclopedia produced by Microsoft from 1993 to 2009. Having sold more than 350,000 copies by the end of 1993, it quickly became a Windows PC necessity and the go-to source for high school student bibliographies. To further increase its popularity, Microsoft began bundling Encarta for free with the purchase of certain PCs.
But the internet wasn’t far behind Microsoft Encarta. Online access was changing the way people obtained information, and the launch of Wikipedia in 2001 established an entirely free source of consolidated, user-edited information. At the time of its release, Encarta cost $395. But even with a price drop to $99, the bundling with PC purchases, and an eventual subscription-based website, Encarta could not compete with the free and instantly-accessible Wikipedia. Microsoft officially shut down the Encarta website in 2009 and stopped selling Encarta products shortly after.Internet Explorer
With the shocking results of AI-powered browsers and with our ability to access the internet from our phones, it may be difficult to remember the simpler times of internet exploration. But that’s precisely the era Microsoft Internet Explorer helped create. It launched in 1995 to a marketplace largely dominated by Netscape Navigator, but because it was bundled for free with the Windows operating system, Internet Explorer quickly caught on with PC users. For many who grew up in the 1990s, Internet Explorer was part of their childhood. At its peak in 2003, the browser had a 95% market share, with millions of people using it as their primary way to access the internet.
Several competitors were on their way, though, as Firefox launched in 2004 and Google Chrome in 2008. Microsoft was unable to keep up with changing web standards, and security was becoming more and more important for those accessing the internet. Mishandled renderings of web pages, slow performance, and poor security were common complaints among users. Microsoft tried leaning into the browser’s worsening image, launching a campaign in 2012 called « the browser you loved to hate », but it did little to revive Internet Explorer’s reputation. Microsoft launched Edge as its default Windows and cross-device browser in 2015 and officially retired Internet Explorer in 2022.

Scientists Intrigued by Large Spider-Like Blob on Europa

0

The spider-like formation could be evidence of epic eruptions of water that blast through Europa’ surface.
Spiders from Mars? Try Europa.
A team of planetary scientists from Ireland have examined and named an intriguing feature on the surface of Jupiter’s icy moon that resembles the shape of an arachnid — or perhaps an exploded asterisk.
They’re calling it “Damhán Alla,” which is Gaelic for “spider,” or in a particularly evocative phrasing, “wall demon.”
The team’s analysis, published as a study in The Planetary Science Journal, suggest that Damhán Alla, and other features like it, may be the festering wounds formed by torrents of water erupting through Europa’s icy shell.
“The significance of our research is really exciting,” lead author Lauren Mc Keown, a physicist at the University of Central Florida, said in a statement. “Surface features like these can tell us a lot about what’s happening beneath the ice. If we see more of them with Europa Clipper” — NASA’s new space probe currently en route to Jupiter — they could point to local brine pools below the surface.”
Europa is the smallest of Jupiter’s four Galilean moons, and is of interest to astronomers because it’s suspected to harbor a saltwater ocean underneath its icy surface, making it one of the most promising candidates for off-world life in the solar system. Its spider-like feature was first observed by NASA’s Galileo mission, which lasted between 1989 and 2003, during which the spacecraft performed 11 flybys of Europa.
For the study, Mc Keown’s team compared Damhán Alla, which is roughly a kilometer across, with similar formations on Earth called lake stars, sometimes called ice stars. Typically a few feet in size, lake stars form when snow falls on the surface of a frozen lake and holes form in the ice, letting water melt away some of the snow in radial, branching patterns. Scientists call these patterns dendritic, and that they’re seeing such patterns on Europa’s surface suggest another sign of water breaking through its surface.
The hypothesized scenario, in this case, is that some sort of impact to the moon’s icy shell allowed briny water to seep through the shattered ice. This would also point to the existence of a vast subsurface ocean, or at least small pools of water right beneath the surface.
“Lake stars are really beautiful, and they are pretty common on snow or slush-covered frozen lakes and ponds,” Mc Keown said. “It is wonderful to think that they may give us a glimpse into processes occurring on Europa and maybe even other icy ocean worlds in our solar system.”

Police in Rhode Island say they have a person of interest in custody over the shooting at Brown University campus that killed two people and wounded nine others.
They called a news conference for 7 a.m. to provide more details.
Other WRAL Top Stories
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. Hundreds of police officers were scouring the Brown University campus along with nearby neighborhoods and poring over video in the hunt for a shooter who opened fire in a classroom, killing two people and wounding nine others.
The search stretched late into the night, well after the shooting erupted Saturday afternoon in the engineering building of the Ivy League school in Providence, Rhode Island, during final exams.
Surveillance video released by police shows the suspect, dressed in black, calmly walking away from the scene. His face is not visible and investigators said it wasn’t clear whether the suspect is a student.
The suspect was last seen leaving the engineering building and some witnesses told police the suspect, who could be in his 30s, may have been wearing a camouflage mask, Providence Police Deputy Chief Timothy O’Hara said.
University President Christina Paxson said she was told 10 people who were shot were students. Another person was injured by fragments from the shooting but it was not clear if the victim was a student, she said.
The search for the shooter paralyzed the campus, the nearby neighborhoods filled with stately brick homes and the downtown in Rhode Island’s capital city. Streets normally bustling with activity on weekends were eerily quiet.
Students sheltered in place for hours into the night. Officers in tactical gear led students out of some campus buildings and into a fitness center where they waited. Others arrived at the shelter on buses without jackets or any belongings.
Investigators were not immediately sure how the shooter got inside the first-floor classroom. Outer doors of the building were unlocked but rooms being used for final exams required badge access, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said.
He encouraged people living near the campus to stay inside or not return home until a shelter-in-place order was lifted.
“The Brown community’s heart is breaking and Providence’s heart is breaking along with it,” Smiley said.
Authorities believe the shooter used a handgun, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Democratic Gov. Dan McKee vowed that all resources were being deployed to catch the suspect. Rhode Island has some of the strictest gun laws in the U.S.
Nine people with gunshot wounds were taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where one was in critical condition. Six required intensive care but were not getting worse and two were stable, hospital spokesperson Kelly Brennan said.
Engineering design exams were underway when the shooting occurred in the Barus & Holley building, a seven-story complex that houses the School of Engineering and physics department. The building includes more than 100 laboratories, dozens of classrooms and offices, according to the university’s website.
Emma Ferraro, a chemical engineering student, was in the building’s lobby working on a final project when she heard loud pops coming from the east side. Once she realized they were gunshots, she darted for the door and ran to a nearby building where she sheltered for several hours.
Eva Erickson, a doctoral candidate who was the runner-up earlier this year on the CBS reality competition show “Survivor,” said she left her lab in the engineering building 15 minutes before shots rang out.
The engineering and thermal science student shared candid moments on “Survivor” as the show’s first openly autistic contestant. She was locked down in the campus gym following the shooting and shared on social media that the only other member of her lab who was present was safely evacuated.
Brown senior biochemistry student Alex Bruce was working on a final research project in his dorm directly across the street from the building when he heard sirens outside.
“I’m just in here shaking,” he said, watching through the window as armed officers surrounded his dorm.
Students in a nearby lab turned off the lights and hid under desks after receiving an alert about the shooting, said Chiangheng Chien, a doctoral student in engineering who was about a block away from the scene.
Mari Camara, 20, a junior from New York City, was coming out of the library and rushed inside a taqueria to seek shelter. She spent more than three hours there, texting friends while police searched the campus.
“Everyone is the same as me, shocked and terrified that something like this happened,” she said.
Brown, the seventh oldest higher education institution in the U.S., is one of the nation’s most prestigious colleges with roughly 7,300 undergraduates and more than 3,000 graduate students. Tuition, housing and other fees run to nearly $100,000 per year, according to the university.
