Israel Attacks Qatar’s Relevance

0

The strikes against Hamas in Doha suggest a natural limit to Qatar’s role as an intermediary.
Israel attacked Hamas, apparently targeting its lead negotiator, Khalil al-Hayya, in Doha, the capital of Qatar. This tactic is not endorsed in Getting to Yes or in any other guide to negotiation or international law. It is, however, consistent with the stated view of Israel’s leadership, which is that avowed members of a group engaged in ongoing acts of terror are valid targets wherever they happen to be. Israel demonstrated the sincerity of that last part—that it would strike wherever it wished—with its assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’s then–political leader, in Tehran last year. Even after that, Hamas considered Qatar safe, because it is the site of the U.S.-backed negotiations over the war in Gaza, and as long as Israel’s closest ally was encouraging talks, Israel would need a living Hamas member to avoid a one-sided conversation. Hamas claims that its leaders in Qatar survived but that some lower-level figures, including al-Hayya’s son, did not. Israeli officials claim that they attacked Hamas in Doha with American consent. White House officials say that Donald Trump learned about the operation just this morning and directed his envoy Steve Witkoff to tip off the Qataris. The Qataris say that they took his call just as the explosions were under way.
Back in February, Trump said that if all of the Israeli hostages were not released within days, “all bets are off, and let hell break out.” (His threat raised the question of what, if not hell, he thought had broken out in Gaza since October 7, 2023.) Trump added that it was Israel’s choice whether to take advantage of its new latitude. Just this weekend, he suggested that Hamas’s negotiators mull a deal he had proposed to them, according to which all of the Israeli hostages would be released in exchange for a cease-fire and the release of many Palestinian prisoners. “I have warned Hamas about the consequences of not accepting,” he wrote on Truth Social. If Trump was in fact aware of the operation, this tactic—lie about whether negotiation is still ongoing—resembles the ruse that preceded America’s bombing of Iran in June, just days after Trump said he’d spend “two weeks” deciding whether to attack.
Those who view America and Israel cynically will point to perfidy in these fake-outs, which amount to inviting Hamas’s leaders to mull a deal and then killing them while they ponder it. Cynics on the other side will say that Hamas has never pondered any deal since the beginning of the so-called negotiation. Every deal it envisions is a tactical retreat to set up more war. Because Hamas is plotting Israel’s annihilation under the guise of considering peace, the Israelis would have to be suckers to wait around for Hamas to perfect its plot and put it into action. Last week, Hamas said that it would accept a deal under which it would free the hostages in exchange for a cease-fire, the freedom of Palestinian prisoners, and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. But on Friday, it released a video of two Israeli hostages, as if to confirm that the group remains remorseless for its war crimes and will commit more as soon as it can. Both sides’ cynics are very astute.
The assassination is gloomy news for the Israeli hostages, of whom roughly 20 are thought to be alive. But spare a different kind of pity for Qatar. It’s not easy being an insanely rich petro-emirate. During the past two decades, it went from a wealthy but minor airstrip and gas station for other countries, including the United States, to an important player in international relations. It somehow danced between the geopolitical raindrops and made itself a useful partner to so many opposing factions that everyone stood to lose something if it ceased to flourish. The assassination on its territory is not an assault on Qatar itself or the first salvo in a war between it and Israel. But it is a challenge to Qatar’s relevance.
The Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, once told me that his country’s dispute with Qatar from 2017 to 2021 was a family affair—a squabble among cousins that would eventually conclude. He had blockaded Qatar, the equivalent of building a barrier of burning tires in front of your cousin’s driveway, and accused it of subverting the Saudi monarchy by fomenting Islamism. He was not making those charges up. For years, Qatar had been the Arab Gulf’s main depot for political Islamists, a transit point and home for those who thought the Muslim Brotherhood and the Taliban deserved to be heard out. MBS’s view was that they should be heard only through heavily reinforced cell doors. And Saudi senior officials were appalled that this country, tiny and insignificant compared with Saudi Arabia, would have any say at all in matters of importance. The leaders of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates despise Hamas and resent their uppity neighbor. They have condemned today’s killings but are not likely to be entirely displeased.
Qatar insisted on its own relevance, and eventually its necessity, by inserting itself in the middle of every conflict and offering itself as an intermediary. The Americans needed an air base. They needed a place where the Taliban could sit down to negotiate an American withdrawal. Iran and various Sunni jihadists needed a non-pariah country as a pass-through for negotiations with the rest of the world. If Qatar had not volunteered for these duties, another country would have had to have been persuaded to take them on instead.
Israel’s strike suggests a natural limit to Qatar’s role as an intermediary. The United States needed Qatar to deal with the Taliban, because the Taliban and the United States shared a goal of getting the United States out of Afghanistan. But now that it is clear that the goals of extinguishing Israel and Hamas are incommensurable—it should not have taken 22 months to figure this out—Qatar no longer looks indispensable. It looks instead like an enabler, a time waster in a conflict whose every month kills more innocents. Killing negotiations by killing one of the negotiators is confirmation (hardly the first) that Israel and the United States, if it approved the hit, view mediation as a ruse. Now they will see whether negotiating with cynics was better than negotiating with no one at all.

The Attack on Qatar Shows Hamas They Can Run, but They Can't Hide

0

Israeli attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar raises global tensions and implications for peace.
At approximately 6:30 a.m. PST, 10 Israeli fighter jets enacted a targeted precision attack on Hamas leaders who were in Doha, Qatar. The leaders were apparently gathered together in one building to discuss ceasefire negotiations, and while reports are still coming in, it seems that many of the top leaders who lived outside of Gaza have now been eliminated.
There are a number of important things to recognize about how meaningful this attack is, what precipitated it, and what the ramifications will probably be.
The attack, dubbed “Operation Judgment Day,” was coordinated and approved on Monday night as a result of the recent terrorist attacks in Jerusalem and from Gaza. Prime Minister Netanyahu has said this was a justified attack that was a wholly Israeli operation. “Israel initiated it, Israel coordinated it, and Israel takes full responsibility.”
But Netanyahu’s words might not be fully transparent and true. The Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar is the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East and serves as the forward headquarters for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), managing operations across the region. Nothing happens in Qatar airspace without U.S. knowledge. Whether there was foreknowledge or not, the U.S. absolutely was aware of the attack. This is true despite Speaker of the House Mike Johnson saying this morning that he didn’t know anything about Israel’s strike on Qatar. He added, « Hamas has to be eradicated. You’ve got to remove that threat on the immediate border, frankly, within the bounds of Israel. »
Additionally, there are reports that the Qatar Air Defense systems were not disabled, but that the fighter jets were able to sneak in without being detected. This implies that the air defense systems are basically useless in Qatar, but that is highly unlikely. More likely, the Qataris are claiming plausible deniability so that they can achieve their two goals of both removing Hamas from the equation and not antagonizing their Muslim brothers in other countries of the region.
Already, there have been reactions around the world that need to be paid attention. President Trump tweeted, “I told them this was the last chance and to take the deal, they didn’t listen.” French President Macron has already condemned the attack, saying it was « unacceptable, regardless of its motive.” Pope Leo XIV commented, « There is serious news right now – Israel attacked Hamas leaders in Qatar. This is a very serious development. »
The reactions from other countries in the region have been pretty consonant. The United Arab Emirates strongly condemned the attack in Doha, stating, « We stand with Qatar and condemn the treacherous Israeli attack against it. » Egypt claimed in its statement that « this is a dangerous precedent. The escalation undermines global efforts to reduce tensions in the region. » And Iran claimed it was a « violation of international law ».
For Israel, this was an important action that made it clear in no uncertain terms that it will pursue Hamas terrorists anywhere in the world. This is something that Israel has always said, but often in the last two years has not demonstrated fully. In a neighborhood where Israel is surrounded by bullies who want its destruction, it is extremely important for Israel’s survival to let those neighbors know that no place is safe for the aggressors against Israel.
Hamas leaders in Turkey are reported to have gone underground. The Ayatollah has hidden himself in a bunker, after instructing his people on Monday to stockpile basic goods and store them because « there are dangers that cannot be anticipated. » And Israeli officials are making it clear that they will go after and eliminate anyone involved with or supporting Hamas.
The results of this attack will be felt within the next few days, if not sooner. Hamas is already spinning this morning’s removal of leadership to say that the hostages will be killed because of this attack. Gershon Baskin, one of the negotiators, said, « There’s no doubt that the assassination in Doha cut off advanced negotiations for a deal with high probability. This is a death sentence for the hostages. »
The reality is that the operation will just be used as an excuse by Hamas for killing hostages, with the goal of creating more discord in Israel against Netanyahu. The truth — that the remaining hostages, or many of them, are probably already dead; they should never have been kidnapped in the first place; and they should have been released long ago — is not important to Hamas. The terror group will use this attack as part of its public relations campaign to “justify” its evil actions of the last two years.
But with the death of its leaders, most of whom were fabulously wealthy, Hamas now finds itself with even less behind-the-scenes leadership. Israel has decimated its on-the-ground leadership in Gaza, and this attack cuts off more heads of the hydra. It is likely that the world will condemn the attack, and that this will stop the ceasefire negotiations that were in progress. But it is also likely that this will push Hamas into releasing all remaining hostages and demilitarizing Gaza, which has always been Israel’s intent.
Netanyahu addressed the strike in Doha, saying that « the war in Gaza can end immediately, because we have already taken action. » At the U.S. Embassy in Israel’s American Independence Day event, which was postponed due to the war with Iran, he added, « We accepted the principles set by President Trump to end the war, which include: immediate release of all our hostages and the other principles for ending the war that Israel has established. » By simultaneously demonstrating that it has a long arm to go after terrorists but also wants this war to end, Israel has now demonstrated both the carrot and the stick to Hamas leadership, and those leaders now have to make a choice: Be killed no matter where they are in the world, or release all hostages and leave Gaza.
Let us all pray they choose the latter, and peace, healing, and reconciliation can begin to bless Israel, the Middle East, and the entire world.

Dwayne « The Rock » Johnson revealed the reason behind his recent slim down that left fans surprised.
Johnson, 53, explained that he’s been losing weight for an upcoming film called « Lizard Music. » He described his character as « a very whimsical and eccentric 70-something-year-old man called the Chicken Man. And his best friend is a 70-something-year-old chicken. » He joked that in preparation for the role, he’s been eating « less chicken. »
« I’m so excited because I get a chance to hopefully transform again like I was able to do in ‘Smashing Machine' », he said at a Toronto International Film Festival event on Sept. 8, per People. « Can’t wait. »
« This is me slimmed down », Johnson said. « In the process of slimming down. I still have a long ways to go. »
Johnson debuted his leaner look at the Venice Film Festival on Aug. 25. The actor’s lean look was captured in video from the event.
« Yep had to do a double take. » one X user commented.
« He’s so lean », a fan commented.
« The Rock slimming down and still owning every room… legendary glow-up unlocked », another chimed in.
Before slimming down, Johnson transformed into MMA fighter Mark Kerr for the sports drama « The Smashing Machine. » In an interview with Vanity Fair, Johnson explained that this was the first role in years that made him nervous.
« It was very real. I had not experienced that in a very, very, very long time, where I was really scared and thinking, ‘I don’t know if I can do this. Can I do this?’ »
He added, « I realized that maybe these opportunities weren’t coming my way because I was too scared to explore this stuff. »
To properly take on the role, Johnson wore 13 to 14 prosthetics every day and would just « disappear » when he walked on set.
« I just sat in front of that mirror for three to four hours and watched it all change. There were about 13 or 14 different prosthetics. Subtle, yet I think very impactful. By the time I got to set, I was Mark Kerr and I felt it, from how he walked to how he talked and how he looked at life », he said.

iPhone 17 camera: The biggest camera upgrade in a while

0

The iPhone 17 lineup doubles down on cameras — except for the one that doesn’t.
Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 17 lineup, and the cameras play a central role once again. The standard iPhone 17 gets an upgraded ultrawide camera, the new iPhone Air trims things down to a single rear camera, and the iPhone 17 Pro models step up with a redesigned camera module housing three 48 MP cameras.
iPhone 17 camera: 48 MP ultrawide and a revamped front cameraThe iPhone 17 keeps the familiar 48 MP main camera with 2x digital zoom, but this year Apple has upgraded the ultrawide from 12 MP to 48 MP. We assume it has the same sensor used on the Pro models, which means double the resolution (defaulting to 24 MP) and improved macro photography, since the higher-resolution ultrawide also handles close-up shots. On the front, Apple introduces a completely redesigned camera system called Center Stage. It uses a square sensor, Apple’s largest yet for a selfie camera, to support both portrait and landscape shots without having to rotate the phone. It can automatically expand the field of view when more people enter the frame, and photos reach up to 18 MP.
Video with the new selfie camera also benefits from stabilization improvements, borrowing technology from Action mode.
The thinnest iPhone ever, the iPhone 17 Air, adopts a single 48 MP rear camera that doubles as a 2x telephoto, just like every other iPhone with this camera. It also defaults to 24 MP, has updated Portraits with Focus control, and custom 28mm and 35mm framing options. On the front, the Air also features the new camera system with the same multi-composition tricks and support for simultaneous front and rear recording through the new Dual Capture video.
iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max: Triple 48 MP cameras and extended telephotoThe iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max move to an all-48MP triple-camera system. Each rear sensor is 48MP, including a new Telephoto camera housed in the extended plateau design. The Pro models continue to support Dolby Vision HDR, 4K120, and ProRes Log, but Apple has added ProRes RAW capture too. Support for Genlock is also new, enabling precise synchronization when using multiple cameras. These tools are aimed at professional content creators, including the new (for iPhone) Dual Capture video for recording with both front and rear cameras simultaneously.Apple has not announced 8K recording, and standard video frame rate details beyond 4K60 were not listed for the base iPhone 17.
Apple highlighted updates to its image processing pipeline and next-generation Portraits with Focus control.
The updated Portrait mode now lets you change the focus point after capture, works on more subjects including pets and objects, and delivers better results in low light thanks to deeper integration with the Photonic Engine. Depth information is captured automatically whenever the camera detects a person, pet, or similar subject, so you can decide to apply the portrait effect later even if you didn’t switch modes.
The front camera system introduces AI-assisted auto-expand and auto-rotate framing for group selfies. iOS 26 also brings refinements in HDR, skin tones, and low-light performance.
iPhone 17 and the PhoneArena Camera Score test: Our expectationsThe iPhone 16 series was a strong performer in our Camera Score tests, especially in video, though some rivals were ahead when it came to photos. With the iPhone 17 upgrading both rear cameras to 48 MP and debuting a new front camera, we expect a clear boost in the overall rating. For the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, the addition of a new 48 MP telephoto sensor with extended 8x zoom and new video-related features should push performance even further. We’ll update our evaluation after testing, but early impressions suggest Apple has worked to broaden and balance camera performance across all lenses, making the experience feel more consistent between the base and Pro models.

Lady Gaga Just Announced Her New Tour & It's Gonna Be Mayhem

0

Lady Gaga has announced the MAYHEM Ball Tour, in support of her acclaimed new album, which will kick off in July. Here’s everything you need to know.
Music
Mother Monster is coming to a city near you.
It’s time to put your paws up once again because Mother Monster is hitting the road. On March 26, Lady Gaga announced the MAYHEM Ball Tour, in support of her acclaimed new album. The trek will begin in July, months after Gaga headlines Coachella in April and performs special one-off shows in Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, and Singapore this spring.
The singer took to social media to announce the tour, revealing that it was a last-minute decision. “I wasn’t planning to tour this year after my shows in Singapore but the incredible response to the new album inspired me to keep things going,” she said. “It came together super quickly thanks to Arthur Fogel and the amazing team at Live Nation, who planned a global tour in just a few weeks.”
The MAYHEM Ball will mark Gaga’s first arena tour since 2018, which was also another intentional decision by Gaga, after playing stadiums around the world for 2022’s Chromatica Ball Tour.
“We chose arenas this time to give me the opportunity to control the details of the show in a way you simply can’t in stadiums—and honestly, I can’t wait,” she wrote. “This show is designed to be the kind of theatrical and electrifying experience that brings MAYHEM to life exactly how I envision it. The MAYHEM Ball Tour is officially coming your way. See you soon, monsters.”
The tour will officially kick off in Las Vegas on July 16. Gaga is scheduled to play multiple shows in just a few select cities across the U.S. and Canada, before crossing the pond to the U.K. and Europe. After performing at Coachella, she revealed additional shows in California.
Later in May, Gaga announced that the Mayhem Ball would head to Australia, marking her first shows in the country in over a decade. Read on for Gaga’s Mayhem Ball dates.
In June, Gaga announced that the Mayhem Ball would be heading to Japan at the beginning of 2026. On Sept. 9, after playing her sixth show at New York’s Madison Square Garden, she announced that she was bringing the tour back to North America in spring 2026, including two more shows at MSG. Read on for the new dates.
For the 2026 U.S. shows, Citi cardholders have first access to Mayhem Ball tickets through an exclusive presale that kicks off on Sept. 10 at 12 p.m. local time. Verizon members will get access to their presale the next day, Sept. 11, at noon local time. Gaga is also holding an Artist Presale on Sept. 12, which fans can sign up for through Ticketmaster.
Gaga is not using Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan program for this tour, meaning everyone who signs up for the Artist Presale before Sept. 11 will receive access. If you miss that sign-up window, tickets will be available to the general public on Sept. 15.
