JBL Flip 7 raises the bar with powerful sound, rugged design, and a 33% discount

0

The speaker ranks among the best on the market and is a no-brainer at this price. Don’t miss out!
The JBL Flip 6 was widely regarded as one of the best Bluetooth speakers on the market, so it’s only natural for its successor, the JBL Flip 7, to follow suit. Moreover, the Flip 6 was frequently available at discounted prices, and this trend appears to have continued with the latest addition to the JBL Flip lineup.
Right now, this bad boy is selling at a generous 33% discount at Woot, allowing shoppers looking for a high-quality and compact Bluetooth speaker to snag one for just $99.95. That’s a whole $50 off its usual price of around $150. Just hurry, though, as this is a limited-time deal, and those often expire in the blink of an eye.
You definitely don’t want to miss out on this offer! While the JBL Flip 7 may look just like its predecessor, it actually comes with a lot of bells and whistles. For instance, it’s been certified as “drop-proof,” allowing it to survive one-meter drops onto concrete. Handy if you accidentally drop your Flip 7 on the floor.
Additionally, it rocks an improved IP68 rating, compared to the IP67 of the previous model. This means it’s fully dust-tight and can survive water submersion of up to 1.5 meters (around 4.92 feet) for up to 30 minutes. And with up to 14 hours of battery life — up to 16 hours with Playtime Boost — you’ll have enough power to keep the music going through beach days, pool parties, hikes, or just long afternoons at home without worrying about recharging.
That said, Playtime Boost lowers the bass response, so you probably won’t enjoy using it if you like punchy bass. On the flip side, the speaker delivers phenomenal audio out of the box, which you can easily fine-tune to your taste via the EQ in its JBL Portable companion app. And while it doesn’t support PartyBoost, you can still pair it with compatible speakers that support the new Auracast feature.
So, is the JBL Flip 7 worth getting at $50 off? We definitely believe it is. With its top-quality sound, high durability, and compact dimensions, it’s the ultimate companion for your adventures, small gatherings, and times when you want to mellow out on your couch listening to your favorite tunes. Therefore, don’t miss out—save today!

Editorial: Progressive policies let criminals slip through the cracks

0

Before Iryna Zarutska, there were other victims on Decarlos Brown Jr.’s rap sheet.
Before Iryna Zarutska, there were other victims on Decarlos Brown Jr.’s rap sheet.
The man charged with stabbing the 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee to death on a Charlotte train last month had already been arrested at least 14 times in North Carolina for crimes ranging from assault and firearms possession to felony robbery and larceny dating back to 2007, the New York Post reported.
And yet he was out on the streets.
We’ve written about the progressive criminals-first slant that leaves victims on the sidelines watching perpetrators walk free or getting reduced sentences. How many assault victims sat in court, hoping Brown would pay for his alleged crimes?
This time, Brown was free on cashless bail after a magistrate released him with just a “written promise” to show up for court — despite his history of violence and mental illness.
President Trump wants to put an end to this bail “reform,” announcing a new executive order. He directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to, within 30 days, compile a list of all jurisdictions that have implemented the policy. And he instructed other federal agencies to identify what grants and contracts can be suspended as a result, as Fox News reported.
“As President, I will require commonsense policies that protect Americans’ safety and well-being by incarcerating individuals who are known threats,” Trump wrote in the order.
Common sense continues to duke it out with liberal causes.
“The overall justification to move away from a money-bail system is basic fairness,” said Insha Rahman, the vice president of advocacy and partnerships at Vera Action, an advocacy group.
Fairness to whom, exactly?
Not to Iryna Zarutska, certainly.
And not to other victims of crime who live in fear after their assailants are set free with a “promise” to return to court.
But victims are too often an afterthought, dismissed as alleged assailants grab the lion’s share of concern.
In Brown’s case, it was Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles who stepped up.
“This is a tragic situation that sheds light on problems with society safety nets related to mental healthcare and the systems that should be in place,” Lyles wrote in a statement to WSOC-TV reporter Joe Bruno.
“We will never arrest our way out (of) issues such as homelessness and mental health,” Lyles added.
No, but we can arrest people who assault others.
And the “tragic situation” was the murder of an innocent young woman. Zarutska was the victim, and that should mean something.
Lyles backtracked, of course, after being called out for her clueless comments.
“As I reflect on the tragic murder of Iryna Zarutska, my heart continues to go out to her family and our community as we try to make sense of this horrific and senseless loss,” she said in a social media post.
“This was a tragic failure by the courts and magistrates. Our police officers arrest people only to have them quickly released, which undermines our ability to protect our community and ensure safety,” she wrote.
It may have taken public outcry, but Lyles did eventually get the point. Criminals are not victims, and communities need to be kept safe.
If only other liberal leaders would follow her lead.

Apple’s iPhone 17 launch: the 9 biggest takeaways from this fall’s event

0

iPhone 17 lineup, iPhone Air, new Apple Watches, and AirPods Pro 3 revealed.
On September 9, Apple held its big fall event, and wow, it was packed. We got the entire iPhone 17 lineup (including the very first iPhone Air), new AirPods Pro 3, a fresh batch of Apple Watches Series 11, Apple Watch SE 3 and Apple Watch Ultra 3 – basically, Apple unloaded the whole toy chest.
Everything ships on September 19, and here’s the kicker: prices are staying put. Yep, no price hikes this year, which almost feels like a miracle. If you missed the keynote live, don’t worry – here’s every major announcement Apple dropped on stage.
The iPhone goes Air
The star of the show was easily the new iPhone Air – Apple’s thinnest phone ever at just 5.6mm. Up until now, the Air name was reserved for MacBooks and iPads, but Apple just decided phones deserve the slim treatment, too.
It is rocking a 6.5-inch ProMotion display and a camera “plateau” (Apple’s word, not mine) that stretches nearly the entire back. Most of the internals live inside that plateau, leaving room for a decent battery in the rest of the razor-thin body.
Powering it all is the new A19 Pro chip, which Apple claims brings MacBook Pro-level performance to your pocket. The Air also debuts the N1 chip for wireless connection (Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread) and a new C1X modem that’s supposedly twice as fast as last year’s one, which is inside the iPhone 16e.
The Air’s camera setup is unusual, too – a single-lens Fusion system that doubles as both an ultrawide and a 2x telephoto, with f/1.6 aperture.
The whole new series has a new 18 MP Center Stage front camera, borrowed from Apple’s laptops and iPads, to keep you centered in the frame.
For group shots, Center Stage uses AI to automatically widen the view and even flip between portrait and landscape so nobody gets cut out. It also brings ultra-stabilized 4K HDR video, and with the new Dual Capture mode, you can record with the front and rear cameras at the same time – perfect for talking to the camera while showing what’s happening around you.
iPhone 17 finally ditches 60Hz and 128 GB
At last, the regular iPhone catches up with a 120Hz ProMotion OLED display. The 6.3-inch screen is smoother than anything we’ve seen on a “non-Pro” iPhone before.
Inside is the A19 chip, tuned for both speed and efficiency. Apple says the GPU is 20% faster than the A18 and almost double the iPhone 14’s performance – music to the ears of mobile gamers.
The dual-camera system also got an upgrade: a 48 MP fusion ultrawide lens that can pull double duty as a macro, plus a 48 MP main lens that can turn into a 12 MP 2x telephoto. Add the new Center Stage selfie cam, and this year’s base iPhone isn’t so “basic” anymore.

The Pro goes all-in on power
The iPhone 17 Pro models also have the new “plateau” design, pack the A19 Pro chip, and now use an anodized aluminum unibody instead of titanium. Apple says this new build dissipates heat 20 times better, and there’s even a vapor chamber inside to keep things cool.
The Pro comes in 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch Max flavors. Its triple 48 MP camera setup covers ultrawide (with macro), a main shooter, and an 8x telephoto. Apple also teased its “largest battery ever” in an iPhone – though, of course, it wouldn’t tell us the exact number. Classic.
Apple Watch Series 11 goes 5G
The Apple Watch Series 11 is here, and while it doesn’t bring a big (or any) redesign, the real upgrades are happening under the hood.
This is Apple’s first smartwatch with 5G built in, and it even comes with live translation baked right in. It is also introducing hypertension alerts, pending FDA approval – a feature that will eventually roll out to the Series 9 and 10 as well. Battery life holds steady at up to 24 hours on a charge, making it a solid step forward for Apple’s flagship wearable.
Ultra 3 brings Apple’s biggest watch display
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 looks a lot like the Ultra 2, but it’s packing Apple’s largest watch display yet. The screen can drop to 1Hz for the always-on mode, and the battery now stretches to 42 hours.
It also supports 5G and even satellite texting when you’re off-grid. Like the Series 11, it’ll handle hypertension alerts once cleared.
SE finally gets an upgrade
After three years, the Apple Watch SE finally gets some love. The SE 3 now runs on the S10 chip, supports 5G, and for the first time has an always-on display.
New tricks include a temperature sensor for ovulation tracking and a speaker that can pump out music or audio without needing AirPods. Not bad for Apple’s budget-friendly option.
AirPods Pro 3 get smarter (and bassier)
The AirPods Pro 3 look just like the old ones (well, almost), but there’s plenty new under the hood. They now have Apple’s tiniest heart rate sensor, an IP57 durability rating, and – the big one – live translation. Hold both stems and you’ll hear translations instantly, with your responses transcribed on your iPhone.
ANC has been massively upgraded too: Apple says it’s 4x stronger than the originals, 2x better than last-gen. Bass performance also got a bump thanks to new vents, and Apple’s tossing in five ear tip sizes this time.
The best part: no price hikes
Against all the pre-event rumors, Apple actually kept prices the same across the board – a rare win for customers, especially with all the upgrades packed in this year. The only exception is the brand-new iPhone Air, which does cost more than the Plus model it replaces, but hey, it’s an entirely new device.
Here’s the breakdown of pricing for everything Apple announced on September 9:
iPhone 17 starts at $799 (256GB)
iPhone Air starts at $999 (256GB)
iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099 (256GB)
iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199 (256GB)
AirPods Pro 3 is $249
Apple Watch SE 3 starts at $249 (40mm)
Apple Watch Ultra 3 starts at $799
Apple Watch Series 11 starts at $399 (42mm Aluminum)
New accessories too
Apple didn’t just stop at the phones – it rolled out a bunch of new cases, straps, and even a MagSafe battery for the iPhone Air. Here’s what’s coming:
iPhone Air
Cases: iPhone Air Case with MagSafe, slim translucent case, bumper case, and a new crossbody strap.
MagSafe Battery: a thin, lightweight pack that snaps onto the back. It can quickly top up the iPhone Air when you’re low, or stay attached all day to maximize battery life.
iPhone 17
Cases: Clear Case with MagSafe, plus a Silicone Case with MagSafe in five colors – black, neon yellow, light moss, anchor blue, and purple fog.
Crossbody Strap: made from 100% recycled yarns, with embedded magnets and stainless steel sliders for easy length adjustment. Works with the Silicone Case, and comes in 10 colors: black, light gray, blue, light blue, purple, sienna, green, neon yellow, tan, and orange.
iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max
TechWoven Case: a new woven fabric design using multi-colored yarns for extra depth, with a protective coating against scratches and stains. Available in black, blue, purple, sienna, and green.
Clear Case with MagSafe: made from clear polycarbonate and flexible materials with scratch-resistant coating inside and out.
Silicone Case with MagSafe: available in six colors – orange, terra cotta, neon yellow, purple fog, midnight, and black.
Crossbody Strap: same design as the iPhone 17 version (100% recycled yarn, magnets, sliders), available in the same 10 colors. Works with both the TechWoven and Silicone cases.

Should Kamala Harris be protected? At what cost?

0

The revocation of the former vice president’s Secret Service detail has turned the question of Harris’ safety into a political issue. There’s bad faith aplenty.
When Kamala Harris was contemplating a run for California governor, one of her supposed considerations was the security detail that attends the state’s chief executive.
The services of a life-preserving, ego-boosting retinue of intimidating protectors — picture dark glasses, earpiece, stern visage — were cited by more than one Harris associate, past and present, as a factor in her deliberations. These were not Trumpers or Harris haters looking to impugn or embarrass the former vice president.
According to one of those associates, Harris has been accompanied nonstop by an official driver and person with a gun since 2003, when she was elected San Francisco district attorney. One could easily grow accustomed to that level of comfort and status, not to mention the pleasure of never having to personally navigate the 101 or 405 freeways at rush hour.
That is, of course, a perfectly terrible and selfish reason to run for governor, if ever it was a part of Harris’ thinking. To her credit, the reason she chose to not run was a very good one: Harris simply “didn’t feel called” to pursue the job, in the words of one political advisor.
Now, however, the matter of Harris’ personal protection has become a topic of heated discussion and debate, which is hardly surprising in an age when everything has become politicized, including “and” and “the.”
There is plenty of bad faith to go around.
Last month, President Trump abruptly revoked Harris’ Secret Service protection. The security arrangement for vice presidents typically lasts for six months after they leave office, allowing them to quietly fade into ever greater obscurity. But before vacating the White House, President Biden signed an executive order extending protection for Harris for an additional year. (Former presidents are guarded by Secret Service details for life.)
As the first female, first Black and first Asian American vice president, Harris faced, as they say in the protective-service business, an elevated threat level while serving in the post. In the 230-odd days since Harris left office, there is no reason to believe racism and misogyny, not to mention wild-eyed partisan hatred, have suddenly abated in this great land of ours.
And there remain no small number of people crazy enough to violently act on those impulses.
The president could have been gracious and extended Harris’ protection. But expecting grace out of Trump is like counting on a starving Doberman to show restraint when presented a bloody T-bone steak.
“This is another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation in the form of firings, the revoking of security clearances and more,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass angrily declared.
True.
Though Bass omitted the bit about six months being standard operating procedure, which would have at least offered some context. It wasn’t as though Harris was being treated differently than past vice presidents.
Gov. Gavin Newsom quickly stepped into the breach, providing Harris protection by the California Highway Patrol. Soon after, The Times’ Richard Winton broke the news that Los Angeles Police Department officers meant to be fighting crime in hard-hit areas of the city were instead providing security for Harris as a supplement to the CHP.
Not a great look. Or the best use of police resources.
Thus followed news that officers had been pulled off Harris’ security detail after internal criticism; supposedly the LAPD’s involvement had always been intended as a stopgap measure.
All well and good, until the conservative-leaning Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union representing rank-and-file officers, saw fit to issue a gratuitously snarky statement condemning the hasty arrangement. Its board of directors described Harris as “a failed presidential candidate who also happens to be a multi-millionaire, with multiple homes . who can easily afford to pay for her own security.”
As if Harris’ 2024 defeat — she lost the popular vote to Trump by a scant 1.5%, it might be noted — was somehow relevant.
To be certain, Harris and her husband, attorney Doug Emhoff, won’t miss any hot meals as they shelter in their 3,500-square-foot Brentwood home. (The one house they own.) But they’re not stupid-rich either.
One person in the private-security business told Winton that a certain household name pays him $1,000 a day for a 12-hour shift. That can quickly add up and put a noticeable dent in your back account, assuming your name isn’t Elon or Taylor or Zuckerberg or Bezos.
Setting aside partisanship — if that’s still possible — and speaking bluntly, there’s something to be said for ensuring Harris doesn’t die a violent death at the hands of some crazed assailant.
The CHP’s Dignitary Protection Section is charged with protecting all eight of California’s constitutional officers — we’re talking folks such as the insurance commissioner and state controller — as well as the first lady and other elected officials, as warranted. The statutory authority also extends to former constitutional officers, which would include Harris, who served six years as state attorney general.
Surely there’s room in California’s $321-billion budget to make sure nothing terrible happens to one of the state’s most prominent and credentialed citizens. It doesn’t have to be an open-ended, lifetime commitment to Harris’ protection, but an arrangement that could be periodically reviewed, as time passes and potential danger wanes.
Serving in elected office can be rough, especially in these incendiary times. The price shouldn’t include having to spend the rest of your life looking nervously over your shoulder.
Or draining your life savings, so you don’t have to.

Dear Abby: I am a third wheel to my boyfriend and his married boss

0

Dear Abby advises a man on his relationship and his boyfriend’s boss.
I am a man whose long-distance boyfriend of one year has a married female best friend. (She’s his boss.) She is also a tobacco-addicted narcissist who drinks a lot. They chat on the phone and text for hours every day because, as he puts it, “she can’t be alone.” I think she uses him to compensate for her insecurities. I also think she’s a bad influence on him.
We see each other only every other week because of the physical distance between us, and then only for a day and a half. Last weekend while I was there, she texted him and asked if we would come spend the evening and drink with her. I told him absolutely not! I am protective of our time together and have no desire to spend any time with her.
The closeness they share really bothers me. They have been friends for 20 years, but their relationship feels weirdly close to me. It’s almost like a pseudo romance. I don’t know what to do. I really love this man, but I often feel like a third wheel. We talk every night, and he mentions her every single night. I’m tired of it. When he mentions her name, I physically cringe.
I have tried talking to him about my feelings concerning this, but he isn’t interested in talking about it. He defends her adamantly. What should I do? — FEELING STUCK IN INDIANA
DEAR FEELING STUCK: Your boyfriend’s relationship with this woman predates the one he has with you by 19 years. If he was concerned about your feelings or in talking about their relationship, he would make some changes. My advice is to find another boyfriend who shows more consideration.
DEAR ABBY: My ex-partner has a dog, “Butch,” who is 9 years old. I lived with Butch for almost three years. Butch is a rescue who has some trauma from his earlier life. He’s shy and timid and doesn’t like children or vacuum cleaners.
I also have a dog who lived with me during the time we lived with Butch. Last year, while our house was being vacuumed by a housekeeper, Butch bit her on her calf. I was there along with my dog. I attended to the woman and made sure she was OK. I also put Butch in a separate room. When my partner came home, I told him what had happened, but he seemed unfazed.
Fast-forward six months: My partner and I have parted ways, and he decided to ditch Butch so he can travel and play pickleball with his new victim. He gave Butch to his niece, who has two small children, without disclosing the dog’s biting history. In fact, he told his family that my dog bit the housekeeper, not Butch. I was present when the bite occurred, and he is lying.
I have told the family that I have “concerns” for the children and Butch’s fate should he bite again. His former owner will not own up to the truth. I would like your take on this ticking time bomb. — KNOWS THE TRUTH IN MICHIGAN
DEAR KNOWS: Contact your ex-boyfriend’s niece immediately and tell her that Butch presents a danger to her children. If she doesn’t believe you, offer to have the housekeeper who was bitten vouch for your honesty. As much as I like dogs, that one does not belong in a household with children.

Amazon’s Galaxy Buds FE 3 launch bundle includes a free SmartTag 2

0

The Galaxy Buds FE are now bundled with a nice freebie at Amazon.
In case you missed it, Samsung has launched its latest budget-friendly earbuds, the Galaxy Buds FE 3. Although a bit pricier than the Galaxy Buds FE, these buds promise various upgrades, including a new design. But that’s not all! Amazon has a sweet deal to celebrate their launch. For a limited time, you can grab these in-ear headphones with a free SmartTag 2, which saves you $30.
Sure, you’d still have to cough up around $150 for the earbuds, but hey — it still beats the official store’s offer. You can only get $20 discount when you trade in an eligible audio device in good condition at the Samsung Store. So, if you’d rather pay full price and score a useful gift, the Amazon promo is clearly the one to pick.
But what’s so intriguing about these Samsung earbuds? First of all, they feature improved active noise cancellation (ANC), designed to tackle more of that annoying ambient noise. They also come with an IP54 rating, handling water and dust well enough to become your workout companions.
Another highlight of the new Buds FE 3 is the inclusion of AI features. The earbuds support both Gemini and Galaxy AI, letting you control them with your voice, search through your calendar, and even get real-time translation through the Interpreter app. Translations only work when the buds are paired with Galaxy phones, so keep that in mind.
What about audio quality? Samsung has integrated a bigger 11mm dynamic driver, giving you deeper and more powerful bass. You can expect your listening sessions to be lively and energetic. Factor in the battery life of up to six hours with ANC (8.5 hours without ANC), and you’ve got a solid pair of everyday earbuds.
There’s just no denying it — the new Galaxy Buds FE check all the boxes for casual listening. And now that they come in a bundle with a free SmartTag 2, they’re even more attractive. Get yours and save while it lasts.
