Orange residents gather to view the total solar eclipse – Orange County Register

Nearly 500 people lined up along the outside of the Orange Public Library Monday morning all with the same intent: Be a part of history and view the first eclipse visible only from the United States in 99 years.
Cars stretched out into the street as the parking lot filled up nearly an hour before the 10 a.m. viewing at the library was set to begin.
Orange residents Denise and Mike Zellmer arrived before 6 a.m. to guarantee themselves glasses for viewing.
The couple even considered camping overnight and drove by the library after midnight, but went home after not seeing anybody else waiting in line.
“We will never be able to see this again. It’s one thing to see it on a live stream, but it’s much better to be able to view it in person, ” lifelong Orange resident Denise Zellmer said. “There’s nothing like it.”
The library provided nearly 500 glasses for the event. All were accounted for by 9: 30 a.m.
The crowd spread out as people looked toward the sky watching the moon take its place in front of the sun.
“That’s pretty dope. When you put on glasses you can see it, ” a child said from the background, as he put his glasses on for the first time.
Priscilla Malchow, an Orange resident, brought two homemade cardboard viewing devices with her. She got the idea for how to make them after reading a Time Magazine article from the 1960s.
One of the boxes, bigger than her 4-year-old son, was popular as numerous kids took turns putting their heads inside and viewing the reflection of the sun through a hole the size of a pin at the top of the box.
“My kids have been looking forward to it. They learned about it and they wanted to come to the class on Saturday the library had, ” Malchow said. “They watched the Power Point presentation and knew what they were going to see. They were excited for what they were going to see.”
Larry Middendorf, an Orange resident, quickly put together his viewer in about 30 minutes on Monday morning. His device, which was made out of two empty Pringles cans, four red Solo cups, duct tape, plastic bags and a magnified glass, was used to get a better and bigger view of the eclipse.
“Just in case I didn’ t get the glasses, I put this together this morning, ” he said of what he dubbed the ‘Elclipsenator 2017.’ “I have the glasses, but with this I’ m going to get a bigger and better view than I would with just the glasses alone.”

Did the Solar Eclipse Damage Your Eyes? Here's How to Tell

0

Many watchers of today' s solar eclipse may have glanced at the sun without proper eye protection. But how do you know if you' ve hurt your eyes?
Many watchers of today’s solar eclipse may have glanced at the sun without proper eye protection, if only for a brief moment. This can be dangerous, as looking directly at the sun can cause eye damage, but how do you know if you’ve hurt your eyes?
The solar eclipse wowed viewers across the United States today (Aug. 21) as it passed from the West to the East coast. As millions tried to catch a glimpse of the phenomenon, many may have taken a peak without proper eye protection, either intentionally or by accident. Even President Donald Trump was photographed apparently looking sunward at the eclipse without eye protection.
Experts stress you should not look directly at the sun without proper eye protection, including special eclipse glasses or solar viewers. That’s because looking directly at the sun, even for a short period, can cause damage to the eye’s retina — condition is known as solar retinopathy. The damage occurs in the fovea, a spot in the retina that is responsible for sharp, central vision, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) .
There’s no amount of time that’s considered « safe » for looking at the sun without proper eye protection, said Dr. Neil Bressler, a professor of ophthalmology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Even looking for a few seconds could cause damage, and the longer you stare, the higher your chances of experiencing damage, Bressler said. [Photos: 2017 Great American Solar Eclipse]
Symptoms of solar retinopathy can occur within hours of looking at the sun. According to a paper published in 2001 by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom, symptoms typically show up about 12 hours after the viewing event.
These symptoms can include:
People who experience discomfort or vision problems after an eclipse should visit an eye doctor for an eye exam, according to the American Optometric Association.
Forutnately, many people with solar retinopathy recover from their symptoms, but some have lasting vision problems. For example, in a 2002 study, out of 15 patients in England with solar retinopathy from viewing an eclipse in 1999, all but two had normal vision in an eye exam 8 to 12 months later. Still, even some patients with normal vision in an eye test had subtle eye symptoms, such as a small blind spot in their vision.

Watch the Solar Eclipse live stream

0

What time is the Solar Eclipse, where it will be visible, and how you can watch it in person or via a live stream, whether you’re in the UK or the US.
On Monday the US will experience the first total solar eclipse in 99 years, with a partial solar eclipse also visible from parts of the UK.
The solar eclipse will take place on Monday 21 August 2017.
The phenomenon will begin at 9.05am PDT in Salem, Oregon, reaching totality at 10.17am PDT. In Columbia, South Carolina the partial eclipse will begin at 1.13pm EDT and reach totality at 2.41pm EDT.
The Total Solar Eclipse will be viewable only in North America, though here in the UK we should be able to see a partial eclipse in areas in which there is no cloud between 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
If you’ re not in an area in which the total eclipse is viewable, you’ ll be able to follow the live stream that takes place between 12 noon and 4pm EDT (in the UK that’s 5pm and 9pm BST) . The stream is embedded at the top of this page.
NASA’s Facebook page will also offer a 4K, 360 live stream of the solar eclipse from Charleston, South Carolina. This stream will be live between 1.15pm and 4.15pm with totality occurring at 2.45pm ET.
Areas within the path of totality – a circa-70 mile-wide stretch between Salem, Oregon and Charleston, South Carolina, which includes Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia – will be able to view a total solar eclipse.
The path of totality is illustrated below.
NASA recommends that you will need a pair of Eclipse glasses (not sunglasses) – a selection is available via Amazon (and Amazon UK) – or a pinhole projector. You can make your own using the templates provided at NASA’s site.
The glasses or projector should be used at all times except totality.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes in front of the sun, completely blocking our view of it.
In the last few seconds before it reaches totality you can see a Diamond Ring, which is just the sun’s outer edge shining through. Following this is Baily’s Beads, whereby only valleys on the moon’s surface allow sunlight to escape.
When totality occurs darkness falls on earth. This may last under a minute – the longest total eclipse will occur is near Carbonade, Illinois, where it will last 2 minutes 40 seconds.
When the moon begins to pass by the sun you will see a crescent shape.

Android O Live Stream: News, Release Date, New Features & Name

0

The final version of the new Android OS will be released tonight. Watch the Android O launch live stream here, and read all the latest news on Android O.
Today is the day we finally get to see the final version of Google’s latest operating system, which will more than likely called Android Oreo. We explain the new features coming to your Android phone or tablet.
Google unveiled the Developer Preview of Android O in March 2017, ahead of its May Google I/O Developer’s Conference. Since then we’ve had various public betas (which you can download now on a compatible device) , and today – 21 August 2017 – Google will announce the final version.
Google is timing its Android O launch to coincide with today’s solar eclipse. It will live stream the event at 2.40pm ET in New York City, which is 7.40pm here in the UK.
We have embedded a live stream at the top of this article.
Google Android operating systems are always named after sweet treats, and in alphabetical order. So far we’ve had Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow and Nougat.
The latest OS update is almost certainly going to be called Oreo, following a fairly large slip-up on Google+ that was captured by Android Police. It originally uploaded a teaser that included Oreo in the file name, but upon realising its error replaced it with one containing the name Octopus.
Despite also teasing us with an octopus easter egg in the latest public beta (go to Settings, About Phone and tap Android version multiple times) , Google’s own Hiroshi Lockheimer has previously posted several Twitter teasers hinting at the name Oreo, and it’s the clear favourite with our readers (see below) .
Given that Android Marshmallow was Android 6.0 and Android Nougat was Android 7.0-7.1, we would assume that Android O will be Android 8.0. But Google hasn’ t always done things this way, and Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean and KitKat were all 4.x updates.
Android O focuses on ‘fluid experiences’ and vitals, with new features headlining during its first public appearance at Google I/O 2017 including picture in picture (multi-windowing mode) , notification dots (long-press an app shortcut to view the notification right there onscreen) .
There’s also autofill (like in Chrome but now in apps) , and Smart Text Selection (automatically recognises names, addresses and phone numbers so you don’t have to fiddle around with selection handles; it can also suggest a relevant app) .
Android O is much more streamlined than Nougat with various OS optimisations. The bottom line, according to Google, is that devices boot twice as fast and all apps run faster and smoother by default.
On the subject of apps Google is also introducing Play Protect, which installs every app on a per-device basis in order to keep things ultra-secure.
O also adds ‘wise limits’ to background processes such as location tracking to sensibly keep battery usage at a reasonable level.
There are many more changes coming to the OS, which weren’t talked about during the keynote, including such things as a redesigned Settings menu and Project Treble – the latter in essence ensuring all users get Android OS updates much faster.
Android O is even getting a new Clock app, which you can try out now because it’s available to download from Google Play – but only if you’ve flashed a preview version of the OS.
With the release of the Android O Developer Preview and subsequent public betas several new features were confirmed.
Many of the new features regard notifications, and in Android O we will see user-customisable notification channels whereby alerts are grouped by type. Users will be able to snooze notifications, and devs can set time limits for notifications to time out. Also adjustable will be the background colours of notifications, and the messaging style.
At Google I/O 2017 we learned about notification dots – when you have a notification a small dot appears on the shortcut for that app. Long-press the app shortcut and you’ll be able to view the notification right there without pulling down the drop-down notification bar.
Android O will be able to recognise names, addresses and phone numbers – some of the most commonly copied information types – so you no longer need to fiddle around with text handles (it will automatically select the correct portion of the text) . As well as the usual copy and paste controls Android O is also able to serve up relevant app suggestions for how you might wish to use that data.
In Android Nougat Google introduced the ability to restrict certain app activities in the background, and in Android O it improves on this by placing the priority on extending battery life without user-input.
We’ve previously seen autofill in Chrome, and with Android O Google is bringing it to apps. Users will have to opt in to this service, but will then find it easier to fill in login and credit-card information forms with fewer mistakes and much less repetition.
Picture-in-picture (a multi-windowing mode) , which is already available on Android TV, is coming to Android O.
Android O won’t be restricted to phones, so there will be improved arrow and tab key navigation for when used with a physical keyboard .
Icons in Android O will support visual effects and can be displayed in various shapes on different devices.
Wi-Fi Aware will allows apps and nearby devices to discover and communicate over Wi-Fi without an internet access point. We’ll also see improved Bluetooth support for high-quality audio through the Sony LDAC codec, and new ways for third-party calling apps to work with each other and with your network operator’s special features.
Interestingly, Android O will be able to support multiple displays, allowing a user to move an activity to one screen to the next.
Every app will have a storage space quota for cached data, and when the system needs to free up disk space it will delete data from apps using more than their allocated quota first.
Google says it has made the profile owner and device owner management modes more powerful, productive and easier to provision than ever, with highlights including the ability to use a managed profile on a corporate-owned device and enterprise management for file-based encryption.
You can read about the new updates coming to Android O in more detail over on the Android Developer’s site .
We were already aware of a few user-facing features coming to Android O thanks to a tip-off from VentureBeat, though there was no confirmation that they would make it through to the final build.
This feature is expected to ease copying text from one app and pasting it within another by giving suggestions in the second app as to what you might be about to type based on what you were doing in the previous app. VentureBeat gives the example of finding a restaurant in the Yelp app, then opening a text conversation, beginning to type ‘It’s at’ and the restaurant name popping up as a suggested term. It is currently unclear whether it will be a new feature on the Gboard virtual keyboard or baked into Android itself.
Right now it isn’t possible to share your current location on Android as it is in iOS, but according to VentureBeat there are some new changes coming that make dealing with addresses easier. If you click on an address in a text message, in Android N it does nothing but in Android O it could open that address in Google Maps. It says it is not yet known whether this will be functional only in Google’s Messages app, or in all messaging apps on Android O.
Today you can quickly call up your contacts using Ok Google, but in Android O you will be able to draw onscreen the letter C to open your contacts menu. This is similar to what we’ve seen in many Chinese phones – the ability to in standby mode draw onscreen a letter and open an app of your choice – though here it should work when the screen is switched on and in any app. This feature may not be ready in time for Android O, however, the source warned.
Google phones and tablets are always the first to get new operating system updates, but even Google won’t support them forever. Security updates are provided for three years following the device’s release, or 18 months after it is removed from the Google Play Store (whichever is longer) .
So, for example, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P will be supported by Google until September 2017, which means they will get both Android Nougat and this year’s Android O. The Nexus 9 and Nexus 6 were both supported until October 2016, which means they get an update to Android Nougat but not Android O.
Older Nexus devices will not be upgraded.
Those with supported Nexus or Google Pixel devices should find the update rolls out to their device following the launch of the new Google phones for 2017, or at least within a few weeks of launch.
If you have a recent flagship phone or tablet from a well-known maker such as Sony, Samsung, HTC, LG or Motorola, it’s likely you’ll see the update rolled out within the first few months of 2018.
However, before you can get the update both the hardware manufacturer and mobile operator must be ready to roll it out, which can slow down things.
Or, at least, that has always been the case in the past. Ahead of Google I/O the company announced Project Treble, which in essence makes it easier for manufacturers to roll out operating system updates to customers faster.
In its promotion of the Moto G4 Plus, Motorola has already said it will receive Android Nougat and Android O. OnePlus has also confirmed the update will come to the OnePlus 3,3T and 5.
If you’e running a mid-range or budget model it’s likely that you will never get Android O. Android OS fragmentation is still an issue, and at the last count on 8 August 2017 there were still devices running Gingerbread (via Android Developers) .
Google has recently been awarded a patent for a new form of drag and drop that allows you to share content between apps. You might, for example, drag an address from a text message and drop it into Maps, or a forwarded photo straight into Photos.
Andromeda is a Google operating system that is in essence a mash-up of Chrome OS and Android and has been rumoured for about as long as we can remember.
When Hiroshi Lockheimer tweeted in late September that Google’s October event was going to be as memorable as the one in which Google announced Android (not his exact words – see below) , the internet went crazy trying to guess what it is that could possibly warrant such hype.
The only logical suggestion was Andromeda, but of course what we actually got was the first ‘Made by Google’ phones.
However, Andromeda is still allegedly on the cards, and Android Police assures us that Andromeda is an actual thing and not the figment of many Google fan’s creative imaginations.
It points to a Wall Street Journal report that Google was intending to fold the two operating systems into one to better suit a range of hardware platforms. This would open the doors to a new market sector in which Google has previously tried and failed: the lucrative world of laptops.
According to WSJ Andromeda won’ t see the light until 2017.

Ellison: Trump 'Best Person' to Clarify Stance on White Supremacists

0

Democratic National Committee Deputy Chairman Rep. Keith Ellison Monday said President Donald Trump himself is the best person to clarify his opinion about white supremacists.
Democratic National Committee Deputy Chairman Rep. Keith Ellison Monday said President Donald Trump himself is the « best person to clarify » his opinion about white supremacists.
« I’m not saying he is one,  » the Minnesota lawmaker told CNN’s « New Day » program. « If he is not sympathetic to them, the best person to clarify this is the president himself. He himself can say ‘I absolutely denounce these people.' »
Ellison said the president could have « a national convening » about moving forward as a country, but « that’s not what we’re seeing.’
Last week, Ellison told The Washington Post that he believes Trump has « some level of sympathy » for white supremacists, but he told CNN’s Alisyn Camerota Monday that the president has not done enough to distance himself from their positions.
« I’m saying that the positions that they [white supremacists] have articulated are positions that he does not feel an urgent need to denounce and distance himself from,  » Ellison said.
But instead, he said, « we’re seeing him be morally ambiguous and I think that this is something that is of serious concern If he really believes them and is a true believer, or if he is just opportunistically exploiting them to support him the net effect is people who fought the Nazis, people who fought the Klan, who are standing up for core American values, still end up getting hurt and diminished in the process,  » Ellison added.
And such « moral ambivalence » will not pull the country together around shared values, said Ellison.

Venezuela Cancels Gustavo Dudamel Tour After His Criticisms

0

Stung by Mr. Dudamel’s recent statements, the Venezuelan government called off his concerts next month with the National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela.
After struggling to remain above the fray, the conductor Gustavo Dudamel has increasingly criticized the rulers of his native Venezuela this year as an escalating political crisis has roiled the nation. Now he is facing the consequences: The Venezuelan government has canceled Mr. Dudamel’s upcoming tour of the United States with the National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela.
Mr. Dudamel, who is the music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, said on Twitter that the cancellation of the planned tour was “heartbreaking, ” adding: “We will continue to play and to fight for a better Venezuela and a better world.”
The cancellation was first reported by El Nacional, which reported that the decision came from the office of the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro. It came days after Mr. Maduro openly mocked Mr. Dudamel, who is arguably Venezuela’s most important cultural export — and who, as the product of the El Sistema music program, has been an international symbol of the power of the nation’s government-supported social programs.
“Welcome to politics, Gustavo Dudamel, ” Mr. Maduro said in a televised appearance on Friday, according to The Associated Press. “But act with ethics, and don’ t let yourself be deceived into attacking the architects of this beautiful movement of young boys and girls.”
“I hope God forgives you, ” Mr. Maduro added.
Mr. Dudamel apparently drew the president’s ire with his increasingly forceful pronouncements about the crisis in Venezuela — pronouncements which came after he faced criticism in some quarters for trying to avoid being drawn into discussions of Venezuelan politics.
In May, after Armando Cañizales, a young El Sistema-trained viola player, was killed during a street protest, Mr. Dudamel issued a statement telling the government “enough is enough.” Last month he wrote an opinion piece in The New York Times condemning the government’s plans to hold a vote that would allow it to rewrite the country’s constitution.
“All Venezuelan citizens have a duty to do what we can to reverse the current situation, to defend our fundamental democratic values and to prevent more bloodshed, ” he wrote.
The youth orchestra and Mr. Dudamel had been scheduled to play in September at Wolf Trap in Virginia, the Ravinia Festival in Illinois, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Greek Theater in Berkeley, Calif.
“The orchestra has an open invitation to Berkeley, ” Matías Tarnopolsky, the executive and artistic director of Cal Performances, which was presenting the Greek Theater concert, said in an email. “We need now to engage the power of music to build bridges and create dialogue, and I look forward to welcoming these spirited, young musicians to share their artistry with us as soon as possible.”

Jay-Z: Chester Bennington Tribute During 4: 44 First Performance

Jay-Z gave a tribute to Chester Bennington during his first performance of « 4: 44 » — watch the video.
Jay-Z remembered Chester Bennington at the U. K.’s Virgin V Festival Sunday night, where the rapper performed songs from “ 4: 44 ” for the first time.
“Can you guys light it up tonight for Chester?” Jay-Z asked fans. “Linkin Park, one time— tonight. Please make some noise so he can hear you all the way in heaven tonight!”
The rapper dedicated his performance of “Numb/Encore” to the late musician, who was found dead in mid-July.
Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda Reacts to Chester Bennington’s Death
Jay-Z and Bennington collaborated together on the Jay-Z/Linkin Park album “Collision Course, ” released in 2004, which reached no. 1 on the Billboard 200. The EP’s single “Numb/Encore” won a Grammy award for best rap/sung collaboration at the 2006 awards.
Bennington’s death was ruled a suicide after he was found in his Palos Verdes home. The 41-year-old singer had struggled with substance abuse in the past. Over 300 memorials were held for the singer around the country, and Linkin Park canceled its tour to grieve. The band posted a statement to Bennington on their Facebook page in the wake of Bennington’s passing.
“Talking with you about the years ahead together, your excitement was infectious, ” the statement read. “Your absence leaves a void that can never be filled—a boisterous, funny, ambitious, creative, kind, generous voice in the room is missing. We’ re trying to remind ourselves that the demons who took you away from us were always part of the deal. After all, it was the way you sang about those demons that made everyone fall in love with you in the first place. You fearlessly put them on display, and in doing so, brought us together and taught us to be more human. You had the biggest heart, and managed to wear it on your sleeve.”
