Curtain falls on final Ringling Bros. circus performance

0

The final curtain falls late Sunday on the « Greatest Show on Earth. »
The final curtain fell late Sunday on the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, known widely as « the Greatest Show on Earth. »
The circus, which traces its lineage back to showman P. T. Barnum’s traveling museum in the 1800s, performed its final show at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y.
Ringling streamed the final show on its website and on Facebook Live, where at least 19,000 viewers watched at one point. One commenter remarked: “i remember seeing the Greatest Show on Earth as a little girl with my family. Thank you for all your hard work and all the joy you brought to us all.”
A second unit of the traveling circus closed this month in Providence, R. I.
The circus last January said it would end its run after 146 years. The move came as circuses and animal-performance shows across the country have struggled with declining attendance, shrinking attention spans and shifting social pressure brought to bear by activists who have argued the animals are sometimes poorly treated.
The battle over animal rights dealt a seemingly fatal blow to the circus — Ringling had been targeted by organizations like PETA who consider it cruel to force animals to perform.
Producers removed elephants from the show’s performances a year ago, and Feld Entertainment, which owns the circus, said ticket sales dropped drastically. The company had long battled animal rights activists in costly court skirmishes, winning a $15.75 million judgment against them in 2015. But it apparently lost the larger fight with public opinion.
« The circus and its people have continually been a source of inspiration and joy to my family and me, which is why this was such a tough business decision to make,  » company CEO Kenneth Feld said in a statement last January. « The decision was even more difficult because of the amazing fans that have become part of our extended circus family over the years, and we are extremely grateful to the millions of families who have made Ringling Bros. part of their lives for generations. »
Before Feld, there was Phineas Taylor Barnum’s traveling show of animals and human oddities, and the five Ringling brothers’ juggling act and skits in Wisconsin in the late 1800s. They merged and performed across the country, traveling by train (some still do, to this day) . The Feld family bought the Ringling circus in 1967.
At its prime, the circus was considered a family-friendly outing. But the shows lost their appeal toward the end of the 20th century, Feld said last January. He believes it grew outdated and difficult for audiences with shorter attention spans.
“The competitor in many ways is time, ” he said. “It’s a different model that we can’ t see how it works in today’s world to justify and maintain an affordable ticket price. So you’ ve got all these things working against it.”
When the Feld family first acquired the circus, the show was just under 3 hours. At the end, the show was 2 hours and 7 minutes. The longest segment — a tiger act — clocked in at 12 minutes.
During Sunday’s final performance, Alexander Lacey, the circus’s big cat trainer, addressed the animal-rights issue directly, pausing from his act to tell the crowd that the circus had bred, raised and cared for 500 lions and tigers — on display Sunday night, he said, were the circus’s ninth generation of tigers and 11th generation of lions.
“People are not really concerned with wildlife until they feel it and see it and enjoy it,  » he said, « and love it as much as I do — until they’ ve seen it with their own eyes. »
He told the crowd, « It’s so important that you carry on supporting all those people that do dedicate their lives to these animals. Support good, well-run circuses. Support good, well-run zoos. Support good, well-run public parks that look after these animals.”
Lacey’s exhortation wasn’t the only direct message. Before Sunday night’s performance began, Feld himself addressed the crowd, with family members by his side, telling circusgoers, “From the bottom of our hearts we want to say thank you all very much, and please enjoy and celebrate the Greatest Show on Earth one last time.”
The secret of the circus’s success, he told the crowd, was “the people — it’s the spirit, the dedication, the perseverance of everyone that you’ ll see tonight that makes the impossible possible. They’ ve always been an inspiration for us and they should really be an inspiration for everyone on how we conduct our lives.”
Feld said the ‘town without a ZIP Code’ operates with remarkable teamwork. “No matter what it is, they rise to the top, ” he said. “And they’ re the reason that they are and this is the Greatest Show on Earth. They’ re very special people and we love them all.”
Feld, his voice sometimes shaking, said that in the 50 years that his family had produced the circus, over a quarter-billion people had seen its shows.
“It’s always been our goal to be able to share with families the incredible experience, the joy, the happiness and the wonderment of the Greatest Show on Earth — and I think we’ ve accomplished that goal.”
As the performance ended, Ringmaster Johnathan Lee Iverson acknowledged the cheering crowd with a question: “Wait, wait,  » he said. « I thought the circus was antiquated. You mean you love the circus?”
He thanked everyone from the animal trainers to the band to the train crew, the wardrobe fitters and the circus’s spiritual counselors, acknowledging the Feld family’s role in saving « this American treasure, this American icon » 50 years earlier.
Finally, Iverson signed off, exhorting the crowd: “Keep the circus alive inside you! Thank you very much!”

By MESFIN FEKADU AP Music Writer Drake is cleaning house at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, picking up 12 honors before the show was half over.
Drake is cleaning house at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, picking up 12 honors before the show was half over.
The rapper won 10 awards in an early announcement Sunday and two before the live show was at the halfway mark at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. When picking up the top Billboard 200 album for « Views,  » he told co-host Vanessa Hudgens she looks « incredible » and said to fellow host Ludacris, who Drake had problems with at one point, that he’s « always been a big fan. »
Drake also told Nicki Minaj that he’s « so glad we found our way back » and thanked Lil Wayne for guiding their careers. He closed with an ode to his father: « My dad got on purple suit and purple shoes! »
Drake also won top male artist and gave a shout-out to fellow Canadian nominees Justin Bieber, the Weeknd and Shawn Mendes.
Drake will perform later in the show.
Miley Cyrus sang her breezy new single, « Malibu,  » delivering a sound and muted style that were marked departure from the hits that made her a pop star years ago. She was teary eyed at the end of the performance.
« And for the first time in years with pants on,  » Noah Cyrus, standing next to father Billy Ray Cyrus, introduced her older sister, who was wearing white shorts and a cowboy hat.
Nicki Minaj kicked off the show with an explosive nine-minute performance of her hit songs alongside her mentor Lil Wayne and frequent collaborator David Guetta.
Minaj recently broke Aretha Franklin’s record for most songs placed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart by a female artist. The rapper-singer, who was also joined by Jason Derulo at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, performed « No Frauds,  » her song that was a response to fellow rapper Remy Ma’s infamous diss track against Minaj.
Drake walked into the Billboard Awards with 10 awards, while early winners included Beyonce, who won five, and twenty one pilots, who won four. The Chainsmokers and Halsey won the first televised award – top collaboration – for « Closer. »
« Honestly we wrote this on the back of a tour bus,  » said Andrew Taggart, adding that Halsey « made this a hit song. »
The Chainsmokers performed « Young » with Taggart on vocals and Alex Pall behind the board (they were also backed by a drummer) . Ed Sheeran performed « Castle on the Hill » from Santiago, Chile, while Lorde sang her upbeat song « Green Light. »
Drake and the Chainsmokers were top contenders with 22 nominations each. The rapper and the electronic dance duo are two of the few top-nominated acts who plan to attend the show. Beyonce, Rihanna, Adele, Ariana Grande, the Weeknd, twenty one pilots and Shawn Mendes will not attend.
Some are on tour, while Beyonce is pregnant with twins. It was unclear if Justin Bieber would attend the show.
All 10 of those acts are nominated for the night’s biggest award – top artist. Performers include Bruno Mars, Celine Dion and Cher, who will receive the Icon award.
Some of Drake’s early wins included top Billboard 200 artist, top Hot 100 artist, top rap artist, top rap album (« Views ») and top R&B song (« One Dance ») . Beyonce’s wins included top female artist, top touring artist and top R&B album for « Lemonade,  » the visual project that won a Peabody Award on Saturday at its 76th annual event in New York.
The Chainsmokers, named top dance/electronic artist, are nominated twice for top Hot 100 song with « Closer,  » which spent 12 weeks at No. 1 last year, and the Grammy-winning « Don’t Let Me Down,  » which peaked at No. 3. Other nominees include Drake’s « One Dance » (10 weeks at No. 1) ; Justin Timberlake’s Oscar-nominated « Can’t Stop the Feeling! » (a week at No. 1) ; and twenty one pilots’ « Heathens,  » which peaked at No. 2.
Imagine Dragons, who will perform during the show, will pay tribute to the late Chris Cornell in words before they hit the stage. Cornell died Thursday after performing with Soundgarden in Detroit.
Others set to perform Sunday include Sam Hunt, Florida Georgia Line, John Legend and Halsey.

An alleged image of the OnePlus 5 shows off the dual-camera setup

0

OnePlus has confirmed that its next handset, the OnePlus 5, will arrive in the summer. As we get closer to its release, information and images have started to leak, this time showing off the rear.
It has been close to a year since the release of the OnePlus 3, a handset that offered top of the line specifications, along with an excellent price. The refresh of the handset, the 3T, was released late last year and has had continued success, but now it looks like its successor has once again broken cover.
Late last month, we were able to see an alleged render of the OnePlus 5. In the image, the upcoming handset showed off a new dual lens design that has become quite popular with a number of manufacturers. With OnePlus confirming that the ‘5’ would be coming sometime in summer, it was only natural for little bits of information to start leaking out.
While nothing has been confirmed, if a pre-order for the handset is to be believed, the device will offer the latest when it comes to internals with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, 8GB RAM, 4,000mAh battery, and more. Most recently, a picture of the rear of the handset has surfaced, showing off what looks like an all metal back without antenna lines. Like the previous renders, the handset also has a dual lens camera although it appears that the LED flash has moved in between the two rear lenses from its original position below them.
Naturally, we will have to wait just a bit longer and while the information received thus far is interesting, the most crucial component for the OnePlus 5 will be its price.

Does Saudi speech show better or worse side of Trump? #tellusatoday

During a speech in Saudi Arabia, President Trump encouraged Muslim nations to fight “Islamic extremism.”
Facebook comments edited for clarity and grammar:
The Saudis and other world leaders have Trump’s number. Simply flatter the man-child and he will give you whatever.
—Marty Martin
This will be a much better trip than President Obama’s apology tour where he was in a dither because he felt the USA was overbearing and not humble enough. He no doubt had good intentions, but we all know that good intentions aren’ t good enough.
—Peter Siano Sr.
All those promises on the campaign trail and strong language only to watch him bow to convention when he is faced with the reality of the problems. Meanwhile, his admirers, who continually gloss over the gross inconsistencies from his campaign rhetoric to his current actions, look on thinking the emperor actually has on clothes.
—Mark Smith
This is the kind of leader we need. One who goes into the heart of Islam and calls it out.
—Ben Bailey
Letters edited for clarity and grammar:
The president gave a speech in Saudi Arabia that was way more moderate than the angry, anti-Islam invective that he had been spewing throughout his campaign.
Some conservatives, who would like to believe that the mendacious narcissist is actually a normal, rational president, are celebrating his reading all the way through the prepared speech without going all wicky-wacky.
The question remains, however, if he can pivot so completely after spending so much time spewing hateful, divisive statements, can one believe that he won’ t just pivot again, from this apparently normal speech? At any time, in any moment, he will say whatever he’s thinking, with no internal consistency to guide him, except for his need for attention and adulation.

►POLICING THE USA: A look at race, justice, media
President Trump is in Saudi Arabia, and he is talking about a $110 billion deal with the Saudis that may have a huge, benefit for both countries.
By comparison, now maybe we all can see how bad it was for former president Barack Obama to make some of the non-beneficial deals he made during his presidency.
David F. Lipton; Toms River, N. J.
We asked readers what they thought of Trump’s speech in Saudi Arabia. Tweets edited for clarity and grammar:
He has no moral authority after spending the last year-and-a-half failing to stand up to extremists who support him.
—@jp_devine
From anyone else this would be a good statement. But his words ring hollow after travel ban and previous statements.
—@MykeInDestin
It was a very Bush/Obama speech. The only good thing is he didn’ t start a war because of it.
—@NANNA5064
His speech was spot on.

The Latest: Trump budget envisions cuts totaling $1.7T

0

The Latest on the Trump budget proposal (all times local) :
WASHINGTON (AP) – The Latest on the Trump budget proposal (all times local) : 9: 20 p.m. President Donald Trump’s budget plan envisions cuts totaling $1.7 trillion over 10 years in so-called mandatory programs. People familiar with the plan say that includes cuts to pensions for federal workers and higher contributions toward those pension benefits. Also targeted for cuts are refundable tax credits paid to the working poor. Those familiar with the plan are not authorized to discuss it by name and request anonymity. The budget expected to be rolled out Tuesday would drive millions of people off of food stamps. The food stamp cuts would total more than 25 percent over a decade. Also facing cuts are benefit programs such as Medicaid, federal employee pensions, welfare benefits and farm subsidies. ___ 8 p.m. President Donald Trump’s budget would drive millions of people off of food stamps, just one part of a new wave of spending cut proposals. The Trump plan would slice a whopping $193 billion from food stamps over the coming decade, a cut of more than 25 percent. The White House says it would be implemented by cutting back eligibility and imposing additional work requirements. The program presently serves about 42 million people. Trump’s blueprint for the 2018 budget year comes out Tuesday. It includes a wave of cuts to benefit programs such as Medicaid, federal employee pensions, welfare benefits, and farm subsidies. The overall plan from the White House is already getting panned by congressional lawmakers in both parties. ___ 8 a.m. President Donald Trump’s budget hasn’t been released yet, but that’s not stopping some of Capitol Hill’s most important Republicans from giving it a cold shoulder. Trump’s blueprint for the 2018 budget year comes out Tuesday. It’s certain to include a wave of cuts to benefit programs such as Medicaid, food stamps, federal employee pensions and farm subsidies. The fleshed-out proposal follows up on an unpopular partial release in March that targeted the budgets of domestic agencies and foreign aid for cuts averaging 10 percent – and made lawmakers in both parties recoil. The new cuts are unpopular as well. Trump’s budget plan promises to balance the federal ledger by the end of a 10-year window, even while exempting Social Security and Medicare retirement benefits from cuts.

North Korea Test Missile Passes International Space Station’s Height — Ready For Deployment?

Kim Jong-un is not detoured at all from testing his nuclear-capable weapons as he continues to fire off North Korea’s missiles in an attempt to show the world they have the technology to enter the nuclear game. On Sunday he embarked on the second launching of a test missile within a week’s time. News of this Sunday’s missile firing left very little hope for South Korea officials that they would see peace between the neighboring countries anytime in the near future.
Not only is Kim Jong-un not trying to hide the fact that they are testing the mid-range and medium long-range missiles, he ordered a parade through the streets last week to honor the technicians responsible for last weekend’s successful missile launch. He appears eager to share his “success” with the rest of the world.
While this is the game plan against North Korea today, it doesn’ t seem to be very effective, as the missile tests continue. Without the use of nuclear weapons, a war with North Korea would entail “massive amounts of U. S. and South Korean forces getting involved and this could drag on for months.
Jim Mattis, the Secretary of Defense, did not make any attempt to conceal what the U. S. is facing if, in fact, Kim Jong-un leaves this country with no choice but to take military action. Mattis said, “it is going to be tragic on an unbelievable scale.” Unless Kim Jong-un somehow changes his mind, it doesn’ t look like a favorable outcome for troops. This would entail putting together some type of military action.

Privacy-focused Debian 9 'Stretch' Linux-based operating system Tails 3.0 reaches RC status

If you want to keep the government and other people out of your business when surfing the web, Tails is an excellent choice. The Linux-based operating system exists solely for privacy purposes. It is designed to run from read-only media such as a DVD, so that there are limited possibilities of leaving a trail. Of course, even though it isn’t ideal, you can run it from a USB flash drive too, as optical drives have largely fallen out of favor with consumers.
Today, Tails achieves an important milestone. Version 3.0 reaches RC status — meaning the first release candidate (RC1) . In other words, it may soon be ready for a stable release — if testing confirms as much. If you want to test it and provide feedback, you can download the ISO now.
This is quite the significant upgrade, as the operating system is moving to a new base — Debian 9 « Stretch. » The Debian kernel gets upgraded to 4.9.0-3, which is based on Linux kernel 4.9.25. As previously reported back in February, Tails 3.0 will drop 32-bit processor support too.
Using Tor is a huge part of the privacy aspect of Tails, and the tor web browser sees an update to 7.0a4. Tor itself is updated to 0.3.0.7-1. Less important is the move from Icedove to Thunderbird for email. This is really in name only, as Debian has begun using the « Thunderbird » branding again. From a feature perspective, it is inconsequential.
Of course, bug fixes are included, and the Tails team shares them below.
Ready to download the ISO? You can get it here. Don’t forget to read the full changelog before using it.
