China defends arrest of men probing Ivanka Trump supplier

China’s government on Tuesday rejected a U. S. State Department call to release three activists detained while investigating a factory that produced shoes for Ivanka Trump and other brands….
GANZHOU, China (AP) – China’s government on Tuesday rejected a U. S. State Department call to release three activists detained while investigating a factory that produced shoes for Ivanka Trump and other brands. It sought instead to enforce a cone of silence around the men, according to a lawyer and the wife of one detainee who was interrogated for hours herself. The U. S. State Department on Monday called on China to release the men, who were detained last week after working undercover in a Chinese factory to check into worker abuses. « We urge China to release them immediately and otherwise afford them the judicial and fair trial protections to which they are entitled,  » said Alicia Edwards, a State Department spokeswoman. She said the U. S. remains concerned about « the pattern of arrests and detentions » and noted that labor activists are instrumental in helping American companies understand conditions in their supply chains and holding Chinese manufacturers accountable under Chinese labor laws. Deng Guilian, the wife of one of the detainees, Hua Haifeng, told The Associated Press that she had been interrogated twice by police in her hometown in central China’s Hubei province. The police pulled her in for four hours of questioning that lasted past midnight on Friday, and then called her for a further interrogation on Saturday. She said police questioned her sharply about her contacts with foreign media. She said that on Friday four policemen sat in a close circle around her, one asking questions, one examining her phone, one taking notes and one just staring at her. « In a normal situation, as a woman at midnight squeezed in the middle of four men – moreover they’re policemen – it’s impossible not to be nervous,  » she said. « I was terrified. » Asked about the detentions Tuesday, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said the State Department has made the U. S. position « very clear » and will « continue to exert the proper diplomatic pressure. » On whether the president or Ivanka Trump would comment directly, he said « it’s a State Department issue. » A spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee criticized Ivanka Trump’s company for not speaking publicly about the detentions. Adrienne Watson said in a statement Tuesday that « Ivanka’s company should switch suppliers, and the Trumps should stop hypocritically telling corporations to ‘buy American and hire American’ while they continue to knowingly take advantage of workers’ abuses abroad. » China has been cracking down on perceived threats to the ruling Communist Party, particularly from sources with foreign ties such as China Labor Watch, the New York-based nonprofit that was leading the investigation. The group planned to publish a report this month alleging low pay, excessive overtime, verbal abuse and possible misuse of student labor at factories belonging to the Huajian Group. The company has denied the allegations and says it stopped producing Ivanka Trump shoes months ago. Hua Chunying, spokeswoman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a regular news briefing Tuesday that the men working with China Labor Watch had been accused of using secret recording devices to disrupt normal commercial operations and would be dealt with under Chinese law. « Other nations have no right to interfere in our judicial sovereignty and independence,  » she said, adding, « The police found these people illegally possessed secret cameras, secret listening devices and other illegal monitoring devices. » Hua Haifeng’s lawyer, Wen Yu, said Tuesday that all three of the activists are being held at the Ganzhou City Detention Center in southeastern Jiangxi province and that after a day and a half of waiting he was finally able to consult with his client Tuesday afternoon. « His condition inside is OK. Nobody beat him,  » Wen said. « It’s just that he has to sleep next to the toilet. People go to pee all night. » He said the cell was crowded with 21 people, who have been ordered not to speak with Hua. The lawyer said he had applied for bail for Hua, who faces imprisonment of up to two years if found guilty. Then Wen was contacted by city authorities who told him not to speak with foreign media and he stopped responding to questions. China Labor Watch executive director Li Qiang has said all three men, whom he lost contact with late last month, are not guilty and did not use secret recording devices. In an April letter to Ivanka Trump, he urged her to press for better conditions in her brand’s supply chain. « Your words and deeds can make a difference in these workers’ lives,  » he wrote. Ivanka Trump’s brand has declined to comment on the allegations or the arrests. She stepped back from day-to-day management of the company when she took on a White House role as adviser to her father, but retains ownership. Marc Fisher, which produces shoes for Ivanka Trump and other brands, has said it is looking into the allegations. ___ Associated Press writer Catherine Lucey and Matthew Pennington in Washington and researcher Fu Ting in Ganzhou contributed to this report. ___ Follow Kinetz on Twitter at twitter.com/ekinetz Copyright 2017 The Associated Press. WhatsApp for iOS just added filters and albums for photos and videos

0

The hugely popular messaging platform now offers five filters and automatic albums for images.
When it comes to straightforward messaging, WhatsApp is hard to beat. But as more services embrace the camera – like Facebook Messenger and, most recently, Skype – WhatsApp risks being left behind.
Well, WhatsApp (which is owned by Facebook) has apparently been paying attention as today it’s introducing two new photo-focused features – and one not – that bring its visuals a little closer to what’s on tap with other platforms.
First up for the billion-plus-users chat service is color filters. Users can now edit a photo, video or GIF post-capture with a filter. There are currently five to choose from: pop, black and white, cool, chrome, and film.
To add a filter, simply swipe up on an image or clip after you’ve taken it and make your pick.
Next up is albums. Now, whenever you receive four or more photos or videos from someone, the images will automatically be bundled into a scrollable or swipeable album.
Hopping off the photo train, WhatsApp for iOS is also introducing reply shortcuts. This feature lets you swipe right on any message to reply to it.
As noted by TechCrunch, this is great if you’re in a group conversation and a participant asks a question that quickly zips by. You can go back and reply directly to their query before it’s lost in the shuffle.
As to whether these latest features are headed to Android, WhatsApp told TechCrunch it would like to bring them to Google’s mobile platform, but doesn’t have a timeline for when that will happen.
You can update to the latest version of WhatsApp for iOS right now.

Silent fear in Paris's Notre Dame after attacker shot

0

Hundreds of people raised their arms above their heads and faced the altar on Tuesday in Paris’s landmark Notre Dame cathedral — but it was no act of religious celebration.
Hundreds of people raised their arms above their heads and faced the altar on Tuesday in Paris’s landmark Notre Dame cathedral — but it was no act of religious celebration.
The visitors were trapped in the pews after a hammer-wielding man, claiming to be a « soldier » of the Islamic State group, was shot and wounded just outside the church when he attacked a police officer.
While many of the some 1,500 people had come from around the world to see the church’s famed stained glass and gargoyles, they instead found themselves instructed to keep their hands up while authorities searched for weapons.
« A voice asked us to be quiet in French, English and Spanish,  » said 42-year-old American tourist Nick, on a five-day visit to Paris with his wife.
She leaned against him, still shaken, as they walked out of the church once it was all over, saying « I’m scared, I’m scared ».
Notre Dame, which is situated on the banks of the Seine river in the heart of Paris, draws 13 million visitors a year.
At around 4: 20 pm (1420 GMT) the American couple had been waiting in line to enter when the attack kicked off. There was a commotion, then people began to run and then came two or three gunshots.
– ‘Very scary’ –
« We heard that it was a man with a hammer. We hope he’s a fool, not a terrorist,  » said Nick, who didn’t provide his full name.
From his office on the second floor of presbytery, Notre Dame communications manager Andre Finot realised something was wrong when he heard the policeman’s first shot.
« I saw three officers surrounding a man. A second shot rang out and the man fell to the ground,  » Finot said.
The officer was lightly wounded and the attacker was rushed to hospital after being struck by police gunfire.
Tuesday’s incident comes three days after extremists used a van and knives to crush to death and kill seven people enjoying a night out in London. One of the victims was French.
France is still under the state of emergency imposed after the November 2015 attacks in Paris, when Islamic State jihadists killed 130 people in a night of carnage at venues across the city.
In the chaos of the moment on Tuesday it was not immediately clear what was happening and how serious the threat was.
« Suddenly they closed the doors. I was scared, I thought it was a bomb,  » said Juan, a Mexican in his 50s. « But thank God we were quickly told it wasn’t and we were fine. »
Once the doors were opened and the tourists were allowed to leave, many wasted no time in leaving the area. Some still had tears in their eyes as they walked out of the church’s ornately carved stone entrance.
For some the security scare was enough of a shock to make them reconsider their plans in the French capital.
Alberto Loor, a 34-year-old Ecuadorian and Maria-Jose Di Mora, 28, were wrapping up their honeymoon in Europe. After the attack they decided to shorten their stay in Paris, without even a visit to the Eiffel Tower.
« It’s very scary, we’ve never lived something like this », she said. « You feel a threat for your life ».

Former US track star Sanya Richards-Ross reveals she had abortion

It may be nine years later, but Sanya Richards-Ross still feels the emotional pain.
The former US track star, who won a gold medal during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, revealed in her new memoir, Chasing Grace: What the Quarter Mile Has Taught Me About God and Life, that she had an abortion just days before competing.
“The culmination of a lifetime of work was right before me, ” she wrote, according to People . “In that moment, it seemed like no choice at all. The debate of when life begins swirled through my head, and the veil of a child out of wedlock at the prime of my career seemed unbearable. What would my sponsors, my family, my church, and my fans think of me?”
Richards-Ross made the decision with fiance and now-husband Aaron Ross, who was a cornerback for the Giants. She wrote that she feared what entering the public spotlight under those circumstances.
“Everything I ever wanted seemed to be within reach, ” she wrote. “The culmination of a lifetime of work was right before me. In that moment, it seemed like no choice at all. The debate of when life begins swirled through my head, and the veil of a child out of wedlock at the prime of my career seemed unbearable. What would my sponsors, my family, my church, and my fans think of me?”
Ross couldn’ t be present for the procedure because of training camp, and although it was done quickly, Richards-Ross writes that the emotional pain took far longer to deal with.
“I made a decision that broke me, and one from which I would not immediately heal, ” she wrote. “Abortion would now forever be a part of my life. A scarlet letter I never thought I’ d wear. I was a champion — and not just an ordinary one, but a world-class, record-breaking champion. From the heights of that reality I fell into a depth of despair.”
Now, with both athletes moving on from their careers, they are looking forward to settling down and beginning a family together, with the couple announcing a new pregnancy in February.
“Many parts of our lives have felt like a fairy tale, but this is our biggest blessing yet, ” the couple told People. “We are so excited to start a family and can’ t wait to begin this new adventure!”

Apple will be offering a tvOS Public Beta this year

0

Apple has updated its page for its public beta programs, and while it has always offered iOS and macOS betas, it will begin offering one for tvOS this year, starting with the upcoming tvOS 11.
Yesterday, Apple held the keynote for its WWDC 2017 event, where the company announced iOS 11, macOS 10.13 High Sierra, and watchOS 4. While tvOS was missing, we learned later that Apple will be announcing tvOS 11 tomorrow, although a developer preview is already available.
But if you don’t have a paid developer license, you’ll no longer have to wait until the fall when it’s released to the public. Alongside the usual iOS and macOS public betas, there will now be one for tvOS 11. While the website doesn’t say when it will be available, it will presumably be later this month like its iOS and macOS counterparts.
While Apple hasn’t formally announced the update yet, we can get a peek at what’s coming from the developer preview release notes. tvOS 11 will contain automatic light and dark appearance switching, home screen sync, right-to-left language support, notification support, and a number of under-the-hood improvements.
The final version of tvOS 11 will likely ship this September, around the same time as iOS 11, macOS High Sierra, and watchOS 4. As with the previous version, it will only be available for the fourth-generation Apple TV.

Filmmaker Michael Moore launches website 'Trumpileaks' for whistleblowers inside the Trump administration

0

He’s calling it ‘Trumpileaks’ and it’s designed to be a place for whistleblowers to share potentially damaging information on Trump’s White House.
Remember when President Trump loved WikiLeaks? Well, Trump might not like this.
Documentarian Michael Moore has decided to create his own WikiLeaks of sorts.
He’s calling it  » Trumpileaks  » and it’s designed to be a place for whistleblowers to share potentially damaging information on Trump’s White House.
RELATED: Michael Moore through the years
The site features messaging apps Signal and Peerio, as well as WhatsApp, encrypted emails and regular old post mail, the same services media outlets like the New York Times employ.
On Moore’s site it reads it’s seeking people « with knowledge of the crimes, lies and general misconduct committed by Donald J. Trump and his associates,  » encouraging them « to blow the whistle in the name of protecting the United States of America from tyranny. »
The filmmaker even wrote in a letter on the site that it is a « patriotic duty » to leak classified information coming out of the White House.
« From the time you opened this letter to the time you get to the bottom of it, there’s a decent chance that our President will have violated the constitution, obstructed justice, lied to the American people, encouraged or supported acts of violence, or committed some horrible mistake that would’ve ended any other politician’s career (or sent you or I to jail) . And just like all the times he’s done so in the past, he will get away with it,  » Moore wrote.
Since Trump took office, leaks have plagued the Trump administration ranging from how he spends his nights to secret meetings among his staff.
Reality Leigh Winner has become the first to be prosecuted under his presidency for sending a top secret NSA document to the media .
Right now Moore is working on Fahrenheit 11/9, a documentary critical of Trump, and thus any tips could end up in the piece.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — The Latest on the sexual-assault case against Bill Cosby (all times local) :
5: 45 p.m.
Bill Cosby’s lawyers are seizing on inconsistencies in his chief accuser’s recollections of their relationship and the night she says he drugged and violated her more than a decade ago at his suburban Philadelphia home.
The lawyers cite differences in key details from former Temple University employee Andrea Constand’s courtroom testimony Tuesday and the accounts she’s gave to police and in a civil deposition in 2005.
They say the inconsistencies include Constand’s answers on how long she had known Cosby and whether she’ d ever been alone with him before the night she says he molested her.
Constand says Cosby gave her pills that left her paralyzed and then groped her.
Cosby lawyer Angela Agrusa questioned why Constand continued to interact with Cosby after the night she says she was assaulted.
Cosby denies the charges against him.
___
3: 30 p.m.
Bill Cosby’s primary accuser says she viewed the comedian as a mentor and someone she trusted.
Andrea Constand said Tuesday that she met the comedian while working for the women’s basketball team at his alma mater, Temple University. She says they were friends for about 16 months before he sexually assaulted her.
She says they became friends over conversations about the basketball team and later her career.
Constand says she fended off mild advances from Cosby before the night he gave her pills that he said were natural and would “take the edge off.” She says she then felt paralyzed and helpless as Cosby groped her.
The TV star once dubbed America’s Dad could get 10 years in prison if convicted of sexually assaulting Constand. He has previously called the encounter consensual.
___
3: 20 p.m.
Bill Cosby’s chief accuser has begun testifying at his sexual assault trial, telling jurors that the entertainer drugged and violated her at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004 after earning her trust as a mentor.
Andrea Constand said Tuesday that she felt paralyzed and helpless as Cosby groped her breasts, penetrated her with his hand and placed her hand on his penis.
The 79-year-old comedian stared down at the defense table, resting a hand across his forehead, as Constand described the encounter. The TV star once dubbed America’s Dad could get 10 years in prison if convicted.
She says Cosby assaulted her after giving her three blue pills he claimed were a natural remedy to ease her stress about a looming career change.
___
2: 10 p.m.
The primary accuser in the sexual assault case against Bill Cosby, Andrea Constand, has entered the courtroom in the second day of his trial.
Cosby is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting Constand at his home outside Philadelphia in 2004.
It wasn’ t immediately clear how soon she would take the stand.
The 44-year-old Constand has never spoken publicly about the TV star under the terms of a confidential settlement they negotiated in 2006. Her deposition from that lawsuit remains sealed.
___
1 p.m.
Jurors at Bill Cosby’s sexual assault trial are hearing from the Canadian police officer who initiated the original investigation into allegations the entertainer drugged and violated a woman in 2004.
Det. Dave Mason testified Tuesday that accuser Andrea Constand told him she felt woozy soon after Cosby gave her pills and that she was semi-conscious as he touched her breast and genitals.
Constand went to police in her native Ontario about a year after she says Cosby assaulted her at his suburban Philadelphia home.
The case was eventually forwarded to investigators there, but Cosby wasn’ t charged until a new prosecutor reopened the case in 2015.
Mason testified that Constand said she’ d waited to come forward because she was embarrassed and was daunted by Cosby’s strong standing at his alma mater Temple University, where she worked for the basketball program.
He says she told him and two other investigators that she felt Cosby place “something foreign” in her genitals but wasn’ t specific.
Mason, trained as a sexual assault response officer, said he got the impression Constand couldn’ t remember some details because of the effects of the pills.
___
12: 30 p.m.
A lawyer’s notes from a two-decade-old deposition appear to contradict a woman’s testimony about when she says Bill Cosby drugged and violated her at a posh Los Angeles hotel bungalow.
Lawyer Joseph Miller testified at Cosby’s trial on in suburban Philadelphia Tuesday that his notes show Kelly Johnson told him the encounter happened in May 1990. Johnson testified on Monday that the alleged assault happened in 1996.
Miller also said that Johnson told him about another encounter with Cosby at his home in 1996, but that she didn’ t mention any drugging or sexual contact that time. Johnson told jurors the visit happened before Cosby allegedly assaulted her.
Johnson is the only other accuser allowed to testify at Cosby’s trial on charges he assaulted another woman at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004.
Prosecutors brought in Miller and Johnson’s mother to help bolster her testimony.
Other details did match up. In her deposition and trial testimony, Johnson said she lost consciousness after Cosby pressured her to take a large white pill and woke up on a bed with her dress pulled down and her breast exposed. Johnson gave the deposition while pursuing a claim that she’ d developed debilitating stress from her job as a secretary at the talent agency representing Cosby.
___
11: 15 a.m.
A worker’s compensation lawyer says he was taken aback by a woman’s 1996 deposition testimony that she’ d been drugged and violated by Bill Cosby at a Los Angeles hotel bungalow.
Joseph Miller testified Tuesday at Cosby’s sex assault trial that Kelly Johnson made the disclosure while pursuing a claim that she’ d developed debilitating stress from her secretarial job at Cosby’s talent agency.
Johnson is the only other accuser allowed to testify at Cosby’s trial, which stems from allegations he drugged and assaulted a different woman at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004.
Miller was the second witness called to help bolster Johnson’s testimony Monday that she lost consciousness after Cosby pressured her to take a large white pill.
Miller says Johnson told a similar story at her deposition, including tearful details of how she woke up on a bed with her dress pulled down and her breast exposed.
Miller’s timeline of the events differs from Johnson. He said she testified in 1996 about going to Cosby’s home after the alleged assault, but Johnson testified Monday that encounter happened beforehand.
___
11 a.m.
The mother of a Bill Cosby accuser is telling jurors about the day her daughter told her Cosby had drugged her at a hotel bungalow.
Pattrice Sewell says her daughter called her distraught in 1996, fearing Cosby was trying to get her fired from her job working for Cosby’s agent.
She says her daughter, Kelly Johnson, later disclosed that she had woken up next to Cosby in bed with her clothes askew.
Johnson testified Monday at Cosby’s sexual assault trial in suburban Philadelphia.
She said she saw a jumble of prescription drug bottles in Cosby’s bathroom. It’s not clear if prosecutors have retrieved Cosby’s prescription drug records from the time.
Cosby is charged with drugging and molesting a different woman in 2004 at his Pennsylvania home.
Prosecutors hope Johnson’s testimony will signal to jurors that Cosby had done it before. The defense has attacked Johnson’s credibility given discrepancies in her accounts of the encounter.
___
8: 45 a.m.
Bill Cosby the entertainer took over as he made his way into court for the second day of his sexual assault trial.
As the 79-year-old actor walked past cameras and reporters to the suburban Philadelphia courthouse, a woman with a camera shouted to Cosby, asking him to wish her a happy birthday.
Cosby turned toward the voice and said, “Happy Birthday.” After a moment, he asked: “How old?”
Monica Lyons, of Philadelphia, answered, “49.”
Cosby responded with a jig-like move, looking vaudevillian for a moment as he jutted his cane out as if in a stage show.
Lyons was ecstatic about the birthday greeting.
Cosby is on trial on charges he drugged and sexually assaulted a woman more than a decade ago.
___
8: 35 a.m.
Bill Cosby has arrived at a suburban Philadelphia courthouse for the second day of his sexual assault trial.
The 79-year-old Cosby is on trial on charges he drugged and sexually assaulted a woman more than a decade ago.
Cosby arrived at the Montgomery County courthouse Tuesday with his spokesman, Andrew Wyatt.
A judge is expected to decide Tuesday if the mother of one of his accusers can testify.
Kelly Johnson told jurors Monday that she told her mother after Cosby abused her in 1996 when she worked for his agent.
She said she feared speaking out at the time because Cosby was “the biggest celebrity in the world.”
Cosby’s lawyers questioned her credibility.
___
12: 20 a.m.
Bill Cosby’s lawyers are proving quick to go on the attack as his sexual assault trial gets underway in suburban Philadelphia.
A judge Tuesday will decide if the mother of one of his accusers can testify.
Kelly Johnson told jurors Monday that she told her mother after Cosby abused her in 1996 when she worked for his agent.
She said she feared speaking out at the time because Cosby was “the biggest celebrity in the world.”
Cosby’s lawyers questioned her credibility.
Prosecutors called Johnson to try to show Cosby had a prior history of drugging and molesting women. Cosby is charged with assaulting a Canadian woman, who also is expected to testify.
The AP does not typically identify people who say they are sexual assault victims unless they grant permission, which Johnson has done.

Was The Real Crime In London Was Donald Trump's Tweets?

0

Establishment media have been hammering President Donald Trump for criticizing the London Mayor, Sediq Kahn, for a declaring in a video statement after
Establishment media have been hammering President Donald Trump for criticizing the London Mayor, Sediq Kahn, for declaring in a video statement after the latest terror attack in London that there will be an “increased police presence… over the course of the next few days, ” and that there’s “no reason to be alarmed.”
Trump responded to the Mayor’s statement Sunday, tweeting, “At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is ‘no reason to be alarmed!’”
And you would think, by how this tweet influenced the cycle, that it was the real crime and the seven dead in U. K. were merely a subheadline.
The Mayor’s spokesperson immediately issued a response to Trump’s tweet, saying that the Mayor “has more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump’s ill-informed tweet.” The mayor’s office also claimed the president “deliberately” took Kahn’s statements out of context. The statement kicked off a media campaign to support the out-of-context assertion from Kahn, a media darling of sorts.
In a more sober moment, U. K. Prime Minister Theresa May suggested the pants-on-fire media was to blame for propelling the idea that Trump “misquoted” Kahn.
“I don’ t think that’s actually true. I think the media wants to spin it that way, ” May told reporters Monday.
The establishment media was more than eager to take the focus off combating radical Islam, almost as if the real crime in London was Donald Trump’s tweets.
“Trump’s Twitter Attacks on Sediq Khan Reveal How Pitiful the President is, ” A headline at The Guardian read. In a piece entitled “Tweeting Trash Across The Atlantic, ” U. S. News and World Report’s Jamie Stiehm attributes the tweet to Trump’s “glaring hostility” towards Muslims.
Author J. K Rowling tweeted this in response to the president:
It’s called ‘leadership’ , Donald. The terrorists were dead 8 minutes after police got the call. If we need an alarmist blowhard, we’ ll call. https: //t.co/NUiy9j4fBt
— J. K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 4,2017
Trump responded by calling the claim that he took the Mayor out of context a “pathetic excuse” by Sadiq Khan, “who had to think fast on his ‘no reason to be alarmed’ statement. MSM is working hard to sell it!”
The U. K. has been attacked for the third time in as many months, leaving 34 people dead and more than 213 people injured in total. British authorities are literally cleaning the remains of innocent victims off the pavement, while the mayor of Britain’s most juicy target is insisting, verbatim, “there is no reason to be alarmed.”
It makes sense coming from Kahn too. As early as last fall, he declared that terrorist attacks are “ part and parcel of living in a big city. ”
But maybe police presence in the city has increased precisely because there is an actual reason to be alarmed: a sudden increase in the frequency of radical Islamic terrorism in the U. K.
Rather than insisting that Parliament prioritize the location and arrest of the roughly 3,000 radical Jihadis who represent an “imminent threat, ” Kahn responded by calling on the British government to cancel Donald Trump’s state visit.
Kahn said the U. K. should reconsider rolling “out the red carpet” for Trump “in circumstances where his policies go against everything we stand for.”
A curious statement considering the U. S. is by far the global leader in the fight against terrorism and one of Britain’s closest allies.
Reports indicate that the third London bomber admitted he was going to be a terrorist back in 2016. The other was a member of an outlawed radical Islamist group. Yet the media’s focus is on Donald Trump’s “tirade” and “misquote” rather than the Mayor’s tepid response to the enemy inside the gates.
