Golf — DUI arrest exposes another low point for Tiger Woods

0

For a person who is as private as Tiger Woods, another public humiliation after being arrested Monday will surely haunt the 14-time major champion.
The news was jarring enough. In the midmorning of Memorial Day, details started to emerge about Tiger Woods and the latest dramatic bombshell in what has become a precipitous fall from grace. Woods was charged with driving under the influence near his South Florida home, a story that quickly became front-page headlines.
But then there was that photo — a police mugshot of one of the world’s most famous athletes, looking disheveled and glazed over.
For a man whose personal life has become a series of humiliations in varying degrees over the past decade, the photo offers tangible representation of that stark decline. It offers visual proof of the news, of another public embarrassment.
There is no positive way to spin this story. No silver lining, no beneficial aftereffects that might spring from it.
Initial reactions to the news — and perhaps just as important, the mugshot — can range the gamut of emotions. Anger for putting himself and others in danger. Confusion as to why a multimillionaire wouldn’t pay a few bucks to a car service in order to avoid this situation. Shock that a man who has already so dearly paid the price for past personal scandal would allow further transgressions to affect him once again.
But the main takeaway here is sadness. Just pure sadness.
Look at those sunken eyes in that mugshot and we no longer see the mercurial golfer who once seemed so invincible inside the ropes. There was often debate during his prime over whether Woods intimidated his opponents. He wasn’t just better than them, the argument stated, he was also tougher. It’s difficult to beat a guy who holds not just a physical and technical advantage over the field, but a mental one, as well.
This, though, is Woods at his most vulnerable. It is an image he never wanted to portray to anyone, let alone the entire, gawking world. And it’s a sad one, the very portrait of a man who has made mistakes.
Even those who might have cheered against Woods when he was in his prime or wished for other golfers to knock him from the lofty perch in which he sat for so much of his career, might understand this emotion. It isn’t so much empathy as it is sorrow.
Woods’ previous major scandal was a barrage of infidelities that quickly morphed his name into a punchline for everyone, from late-night talk show hosts to any gaggle of guys at the local 19th hole. He admitted shame — and even if he didn’t, it was written all over his scorecards. This was back in the late months of 2009. The player so accustomed to winning on a regular basis immediately lost his game upon returning to competition.
Editor’s Picks Tiger arrested on DUI charge in Florida
Tiger Woods, who is rehabbing from back surgery, has been arrested in Florida on a DUI charge.
He might insist he never watches the news or reads the stories, but it would be almost impossible to ignore all of it, which makes this latest indiscretion so surprising. (Neither Woods nor his representatives have yet to comment on the arrest.)
If the stories alone were the punchline back then, the mugshot photo will serve as the entire joke this time. But it’s not funny. It’s just sad.
He is a man so guarded that he named his yacht Privacy. Once again, he has suffered public embarrassment; once again, at his own culpability.
He once seemed like he had everything. A million-watt smile, a swing that would make Bobby Jones jealous and all the money he could ever need.
Now he has another humiliation that will haunt him, and a mugshot that will forever tell that story.

French president flexes diplomatic muscles in Putin meeting

Flexing his diplomatic muscles, French President Emmanuel Macron said he had « extremely frank » and « direct » talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday and launched an extraordinary…
VERSAILLES, France (AP) – Flexing his diplomatic muscles, French President Emmanuel Macron said he had « extremely frank » and « direct » talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday and launched an extraordinary attack on two state-funded Russian media outlets he accused of spreading « lying propaganda » during France’s presidential campaign. Macron’s full-on blast at the state news agency Sputnik and broadcaster Russia Today came at a news conference with Putin standing at his side. His comments underscored the clear differences between the two men on multiple issues and fulfilled the French president’s campaign promises to pull no punches with Russia when needed. But after more than two hours of meetings – their first since Macron’s May 7 election and longer than scheduled – both leaders also signaled a shared desire not to let disagreements define their fledgling relationship. The fight against terrorism, in particular, appeared to offer common ground. Putin said Macron proposed a framework for French and Russian anti-terror experts to meet and work together. And both leaders agreed they don’t want Syria – where Russia is propping up the government of President Bashar Assad – to collapse into a failed state. Progress in Syria « will happen by a joint effort, which today we laid the foundations for,  » Macron said. Speaking through a translator, Putin said the two countries were « totally capable of trying to progress together » on world affairs. « What unites us allows us to hope that the possibility exists to improve our ties,  » he added later. But there was no disguising the rifts. Macron said he spoke to Putin about LGBT rights in the Russian republic of Chechnya and about the rights of embattled non-governmental organizations in Russia, vowing to be « vigilant » on these issues. Earlier Monday, human rights activists protesting near the Eiffel Tower displayed a banner that said, « Stop homophobia in Chechnya. » Any use of chemical weapons in Syria is a « red line » for France and would be met by « reprisals » and an « immediate riposte » from the government, Macron said. He did not specify the form of such reprisals, but France flies warplanes over Syria and Iraq, striking Islamic State targets as part of an international coalition. On Sputnik and Russia Today, Macron showed little restraint, saying the two organizations spread « untruths about me and my campaign » during the French election. « I will not give an inch on this,  » he said. « Russia Today and Sputnik … behaved as organs of influence, of propaganda, of lying propaganda. » Putin, seemingly unfazed, pushed back any suggestion that Russia sought to influence the election. Russian meddling became a concern in France after allegations that Russia sought to interfere in the U. S. presidential contest that elected Donald Trump and after a document leak hit Macron’s campaign in the final hours of the French race. Putin also hosted Macron’s far-right rival, Marine Le Pen, at the Kremlin in March. On Monday, he defended that gesture as simple good manners, saying it would have been strange to rebuff Le Pen’s Russia-friendly overtures. « That doesn’t mean that we tried to influence the results of the election. Besides, that is almost impossible,  » he said. Macron was the first Western leader to speak to Putin after the Group of Seven summit the French leader attended over the weekend, where relations with Russia were a key topic. These first forays into world diplomacy by the French president who has never before held elected office have shown the 39-year-old to be a quick learner and self-confident, willing to take the calculated risk of voicing firm views on thorny issues. Macron portrayed the Putin meeting as just a first step in resetting relations with Russia. « Big things are built over time,  » he said. « It was an exchange that was extremely frank, direct, with a lot of things that were said. » « We have disagreements, but at least we talked about them,  » he added. After the deterioration in ties under Macron’s predecessor, Socialist Francois Hollande, Putin expressed the hope that in Macron and his team there will be « more people who understand us. » The body language Monday was good. Their first handshakes – relatively brief and cordial – were far less macho than Macron’s now-famous who-will-blink-first handshake showdown with Trump when the two leaders met last week for the first time. Macron and Putin also hugged goodbye and shook hands, both smiling, after ending their meetings with a visit to an exhibit about the 300th anniversary of Russian Czar Peter the Great’s trip to Paris. The venue for the exhibit and Putin’s visit was the sumptuous Palace of Versailles, west of Paris. Putin seemed wowed, saying he was « very impressed by the grandeur of France, by its history. » The news conference was held in the palace’s largest room, the Gallery of Great Battles, which celebrates 14 centuries of French military successes. Macron, almost lecturing Putin, couldn’t resist the opportunity to hammer home a message. « These military victories,  » he said, « should never make us forget that they were always the result of lack of understanding. » ___ Leicester reported from Paris. Award-winning sports writer Frank Deford dies at 78

Frank Deford, the award-winning sports writer and commentator whose elegant reportage was a staple for years at Sports Illustrated and National Public Radio, has died. He was 78.
He died Sunday in Key West, Florida, his family said Monday.
Deford was a six-time Sports Writer of the Year and a member of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame. He wrote and spoke with a lyrical touch and this month retired from NPR’s « Morning Edition » after 37 years as a contributor.
« Frank was dealing with an audience that doesn’t turn to the sports pages first thing,  » said Tom Goldman, an NPR sports correspondent who recently spent time with Deford in Key West. « And he was proudest of the many comments he got over the years from people saying, ‘I don’t really like sports, but I like what you did, and you made me more interested in it.' »
He was the first sports writer awarded the National Humanities Medal. In 2013, President Barack Obama honored him for « transforming how we think about sports. »
« A dedicated writer and storyteller, Mr. Deford has offered a consistent, compelling voice in print and on radio, reaching beyond scores and statistics to reveal the humanity woven into the games we love,  » Obama said at the time.
Deford called the award the one he is most proud of.
His long profiles, covering all corners of sports, were for years a showcase in Sports Illustrated.
« He could watch the grittiest game and zoom in on the moment that made it important,  » said Jim Litke, a national sports columnist for The Associated Press. « Nobody was better at connecting sports to the culture at large. He dressed up every event he attended. »
He also dressed up in a more literal way, always sharply attired and cutting a debonair figure at 6-foot-4 with his shock of dark hair and thin mustache.
Deford was a prolific book author and contributed commentaries to HBO’s « Real Sports » program and hosted documentaries on the cable network.
He grew up in Baltimore and graduated from Princeton. He joined HBO Sports in 1995 and his first report chronicled life in Augusta, Georgia, outside the Masters. It was called « The American Singapore. » He delivered 119 segments for the show and was a feature reporter at Wimbledon in the 1990s.
He was the editor-in-chief of The National, the nation’s first sports daily that was founded in 1990 and folded the following year. Its final front page read: « We Had A Ball: The fat lady sings our song. »
Bryant Gumbel, host of « Real Sports,  » said Deford joked with him a week ago about finally being released from the hospital.
« In addition to being an immense talent, he was a consummate gentleman, a dear friend, and a beloved, original member of our ‘Real Sports’ family,  » Gumbel said. « Frank was a giant in the world of sports. His loss is immeasurable. »
Deford is survived by his wife, the former model Carol Penner; two children; and two grandchildren.

Family of service members honors soldiers at Burton Memorial Day parade

« People you don’t know that you would die for them, that you would gain this brotherhood, but after the service you go your own way,  » he said. « I’m proud to be American. »
BURTON, MI — Barb and Doug Tennant were joined by their children and one parent along the parade route Monday afternoon in Burton.
Photos of their three children and Duane Tennant, Doug’s father and U. S. Navy Air Corps veteran who died in 1994, were attached to wooden sticks and stuck in the grass off Center Road as veterans streamed on their way to Burton City Hall where a ceremony took place at the Veterans Memorial Wall.
« My father, he was all about the service,  » said Doug Tennant, a U. S. Air Force veteran. « He had four other brothers. They all fought in World War II together. It was a proud family of service. »
Joanne Outen, 85, watched the Memorial Day parade from her front porch along Center Road near Bristol Road, with American flags lining her garden and a large one hanging from the garage at the rear of the home.
« It’s just wonderful to see the people to come out and remember what it’s for,  » she said, with her late husband Willie having served in the U. S. Army and a cousin that died in World War II. « Memorial Day is (for) those that gave their life for us to have a free country and to have freedom to preach our religion. »
Speaking with one of his sons who served six tours of duty including Afghanistan and Iraq, Doug Tennant was asked to look out the window of the family’s Burton home.
« Look at the garden. The garden is not too far from Center Road,  » uttered the son. « I had mortars falling that close to me. It’s hard to be over here, you know. I know what you mean son. »
For Doug Tennant, serving in the armed forces gave him a chance to serve his country but also meet people from across the country that were willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice.
« People you don’t know that you would die for them, that you would gain this brotherhood,  » he said. « I’m proud to be American. »

U. S. Sen. Orrin Hatch is urging Utah residents to support President Donald Trump so that « he can do a great job. »
The Utah Republican senator told a crowd of people during a Memorial Day speech on Monday that there are many reasons to like the president, including his ability to campaign as an outsider and push for what he believes are the « principles of this country. »
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http: //bit.ly/2rgOxkL) that Hatch said to the crowd of about 300 people at a cemetery in northern Utah that there might be a few reasons for people to dislike Trump. But he says it’s important to think before rushing to criticize him.
