Alibaba cracks down on counterfeiters on their platform

0

NewsHubChinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has sued two vendors for selling counterfeit goods, weeks after being blacklisted by a US industry watchdog.
It’s the first time the firm has taken legal action against counterfeiters.
Alibaba sued the vendors for allegedly selling fake Swarovski watches on its Taobao platform.
The move comes just two weeks after the company was put back onto the US’s « notorious markets » list over failing to curb the sale of counterfeit goods.
Alibaba had been taken off the list four years ago, but US authorities say the firm’s online platform Taobao is being used to sell « high levels » of fake goods.
The lawsuit against two unnamed vendors claims 1.4 million yuan ($201,671, £163,419) in damages, the company said.
The counterfeiters were found out during a « test-buy purchase programme » when the watches they sold were confirmed by Swarovski to be fakes.
In a subsequent police raid, more than 125 counterfeit watches worth nearly 2 million yuan were confiscated.
Alibaba said it would continue to crack down on counterfeiters and that it already had a list of other suspected vendors who would face similar action.
« We want to mete out to counterfeiters the punishment they deserve in order to protect brand owners, » Alibaba said in a statement.
The Chinese online retailer and its market place Taobao have long been accused of being a platform for counterfeit goods.
In May last year, Alibaba was suspended from the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition (IACC) watchdog over piracy concerns.
Alibaba, China’s biggest online retailer floated on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2014 and broke records by raising $25bn.

NASA sets sights on mysterious asteroids in new missions

0

NewsHubJanuary 4, 2017
— From the project that brought you Mars Pathfinder, MESSENGER, Dawn, Kepler, and GRAIL, come Lucy and Psyche.
NASA announced Wednesday that the next two missions of the agency’s Discovery Program will send spacecraft to mysterious asteroids , as scientists hunt for clues into the early days of our solar system.
The Lucy mission’s destination will be Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids, and the Psyche mission will be off to a larger, metal asteroid unlike other space rocks that NASA missions have targeted.
« These are true missions of discovery that integrate into NASA’s larger strategy of investigating how the solar system formed and evolved , » Jim Green, NASA’s planetary science director, said in a press release. « We’ve explored terrestrial planets, gas giants, and a range of other bodies orbiting the sun. Lucy will observe primitive remnants from farther out in the solar system, while Psyche will directly observe the interior of a planetary body. These additional pieces of the puzzle will help us understand how the sun and its family of planets formed, changed over time, and became places where life could develop and be sustained – and what the future may hold.  »
The robotic spacecraft of the Lucy mission will take off first, in October 2021. In 2025 it will swing by a main belt asteroid, then go on to study six of the Trojan asteroids from 2027 to 2033.
The Trojan asteroids are particularly fascinating for astronomers because they are trapped in the pull of Jupiter’s gravity, but do not orbit the planet as you might expect. Instead, the Trojans form two swarms, one leading and one trailing Jupiter. As the planet goes on its 12-year orbit around the Sun, these asteroids go along with it.
Researchers think the Trojan asteroids formed long ago, possibly far away from their current Jupiter-accompanying orbit. As such, « This is a unique opportunity, » Harold F. Levison, the principal investigator of the Lucy mission from the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., said in a press release. « Because the Trojans are remnants of the primordial material that formed the outer planets, they hold vital clues to deciphering the history of the solar system. Lucy, like the human fossil for which it is named, will revolutionize the understanding of our origins.  »
The Psyche mission will also send a robotic spacecraft to search for clues into planetary formation in the early history of our solar system. Its target, a 130-mile-wide asteroid called 16 Psyche that sits in the main asteroid belt, is unique in that it is thought to be made up mostly of metallic iron and nickel – much like Earth’s core.
That makes 16 Psyche particularly intriguing because it could tell researchers something about how rocky, layered worlds like our own form. Perhaps 16 Psyche is even an exposed core of an early planet as large as Mars, scientists have mused. In that scenario, the asteroid would have been stripped of its outer layers by violent collisions billions of years ago.
« This is an opportunity to explore a new type of world – not one of rock or ice, but of metal, » Lindy Elkins-Tanton, Psyche’s principal investigator and a professor at Arizona State University, said in the press release. « 16 Psyche is the only known object of its kind in the solar system, and this is the only way humans will ever visit a core. We learn about inner space by visiting outer space.  »
« This is what Discovery Program missions are all about – boldly going to places we’ve never been to enable groundbreaking science, » Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington, said in the press release.
The launch for the Psyche mission is scheduled for October 2023. On its way to the asteroid, the spacecraft is scheduled to fly by Mars in 2025 before arriving at 16 Psyche in 2030.
NASA is also keeping an eye on asteroids that might be unnervingly near Earth. NASA also announced Wednesday that funding for the Near Earth Object Camera (NEOCam) project is being extended for another year. The mission, which looks out for asteroids that might be a threat to Earth, was first selected in 2010.
The Lucy and Psyche missions join a portfolio of 12 missions in the Discovery Program, which is designed to launch smaller, less-resource demanding missions to complement NASA’s larger missions. Development for the missions is capped at about $450 million.
In the past, the Discovery Program has launched missions to study Mars, stardust, comets, the moon, Mercury, solar wind, and other asteroids. The Kepler space telescope that hunts for potentially habitable planets outside our solar system is also one of Discovery’s missions. The OSIRIS-REx mission, which launched in September 2016, is set to arrive at the asteroid Bennu in 2018 and return a sample back to Earth in 2023.

Trump To Slim Down ‘Politicized’ Intelligence Agencies, Report Says

0

NewsHubPresident-elect Donald Trump plans on cutting down and restructuring the U. S. intelligence community, The Wall Street Journal reports.
A key intent of plan is to pare back headquarters staff at the Virginia based Central Intelligence Agency, and to possibly cut the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. The Director of National Intelligence’s office was established after 9/11 to better coordinate intelligence sharing among the 17 different U. S. intelligence agencies. Trump’s team is concerned both organizations have become bloated in headquarters staff and are no longer mission effective.
“The view from the Trump team is the intelligence world [is] becoming completely politicized,” an anonymous official with alleged knowledge of Trump’s plans told TheWSJ. He continued, “They all need to be slimmed down. The focus will be on restructuring the agencies and how they interact.”
Trump’s pick for National Security advisor, Retired Army Lt. Gen Michael Flynn, is reportedly one of the main drivers behind the restructuring effort. Flynn is a proponent of sending senior intelligence officers into foreign outposts, and continually rotating intelligence analysts to gain them more exposure. Trump’s team reportedly plans on implementing this effort at the CIA.
Any effort to reorganize the CIA and ODNI will need the cooperation of Congress. The ODNI was created in 2004 by an act of Congress, and makes the head of that agency the chief intelligence officer to the President. The CIA’s budget and restructure is similarly controlled by Congress. Trump’s pick for CIA director, Congressman Mike Pompeo, served on the House Select Committee on Intelligence and will likely be heavily involved in the initiative.

RSC Rolls Out Plan To Repeal And Replace Obamacare

0

NewsHubThe Republican Study Committee rolled out its plan Wednesday to repeal and replace Obamacare.
Members of the committee shot down Democrats’ accusation Republicans lack direction when it comes to replacing the president’s landmark health-care legislation, saying the legislation will bring down costs and increase access to coverage.
“I heard again on the House floor when I was down there, just a few minutes ago, how Republicans have no ideas. That’s absolutely false,” Rep. Phil Roe, who introduced The American Health Care Reform Act of 2017, told reporters. “We have a plan — a 185-page plan.”
Roe, a Tennessee Republican and a physician, said the bill is intended to put the power back into the hands of patients and doctors instead of insurance companies and bureaucrats.
Under the legislation , consumers would be able to shop for plans across state lines, a sizable standard tax deduction would be put in place for those buying plans on the individual market, and federal support for state high-risk pools would be expanded.
The group asserted the plan would bring down premiums while preserving popular Obamacare provisions, such as the requirement for insurers to cover preexisting conditions.
“We realized and accepted in small group and the individual market preexisting conditions were actually already taken care of by rules and regulations that occurred and were passed back in the mid-70s,” Roe told reporters. “We’ll look for very high risk people, we fully fund the high-risk pools, which we had working in the state of Tennessee when Obamacare came along, which allow people in those pools — for instance I saw a lot of patients with breast cancer who at no fault of their own had very severe preexisting condition — to allow those folks to buy insurance at no more of an expensive rate than you could in that market.”
Roe said reforming the McCarran-Ferguson Act is also a critical component in fixing the health care system. The bill would restore federal antitrust laws to the business of health insurance, which the RSC says would protect consumers and competition.
RSC Chairman Mark Walker noted similar versions of the bill were popular in the 113th and the 114th Congress.
“Who better to start this process than a physician, who ran a successful medical practice career, who employed hundreds of medical professionals, and met and dealt and provided health care to thousands of patients,” he said at the press conference unveiling the bill.
The group has not yet set a timeline on when they would like to see the replacement put in place, but believes repealing Obamacare will provide some immediate relief while they are in the transition period. Roe said he didn’t create the perfect bill, adding he’s willing to work across the aisle on improvements to the legislation.
“I’m willing to listen to Democrats ideas to this bill, to amendments to this bill as opposed to what they did which was to completely shut the other side out,” he said.

1st female Oakland police chief vows to mend community ties

0

NewsHubOakland leaders on Wednesday hired an outsider and the first woman to run and reform the city’s troubled police department that cycled through three chiefs in as many weeks this summer after several officers were implicated in a sex-abuse scandal with an underage girl.
Mayor Libby Schaaf called Anne Kirkpatrick « the reform-minded leader that Oakland has been searching for.  » She takes over a police force under federal court oversight since 2003 and without a chief for seven months.
Kirkpatrick began her 34-year policing career in her native Memphis, Tennessee, and has risen to lead four different departments. She has a track record of trying to overhaul troubled police agencies.
Chicago hired her six months ago to lead an effort to oversee police reforms. She was a finalist for chief after a video showing an officer fatally shooting a black teenager 16 times led to the superintendent’s firing.
Speaking with a distinct southern drawl, Kirkpatrick vowed to rebuild damaged relations with Oakland’s significant black community while working to revitalize a demoralized rank-and-file force.
« I’m interested in transformation, » Kirkpatrick said.
She offered few specifics of her plans but said, « I don’t consider it a mess, » when asked about taking over the embattled department. « It’s an opportunity.  »
Maya Whitaker, a black community organizer who helped with the job search, said the new chief is aware that she is entering a « no-trust zone » and needs « to break down barriers.  »
Whitaker said she’s optimistic that Kirkpatrick, who is white, has the experience to succeed in Oakland but the community « will hold her accountable » if she fails.
Sgt. Barry Donlan, head of the officers’ union, said « Oakland’s hard-working police officers look forward to working collaboratively with Chief Kirkpatrick in serving our community.  »
She joins a rare slate of female leaders of a large city. Oakland’s mayor, fire chief and city administrator are all women.
Kirkpatrick previously held high-ranking law enforcement posts in Washington state, including as Spokane’s police chief for six years through 2012. The city hired her to reform a department rocked by a police brutality scandal. Along the way, she earned a law degree at Seattle University.
Kirkpatrick will bring her background in reform to an agency dogged by a scandal that ensnared two dozen officers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area accused of having sex with the teen daughter of an Oakland dispatcher.
About a dozen Oakland officers resigned, were suspended or were implicated in the scandal, and seven current and former Bay Area officers faced criminal charges.
The teen has told The Associated Press and other media outlets that she worked as a 17-year-old prostitute and had sex with two dozen officers, sometimes in exchange for tips on prostitution stings and protection from arrest.
The allegations led to Oakland cycling through three police chiefs in June before the mayor announced that the city’s administrator would take over management of the department until a permanent chief was hired.
The police force has been under federal court supervision since the 2003 settlement of a civil rights lawsuit that accused officers of planting evidence, beating suspects and other wrongdoing.
Under former Chief Sean Whent, the city was close to shedding court oversight when the sex scandal derailed the department’s reform process and forced Whent to resign.
Bay Area Rapid Transit Deputy Chief Ben Fairow was appointed to replace Whent but resigned shortly afterward when news of an extramarital affair surfaced.
Oakland Deputy Chief Paul Figueroa agreed to act as interim chief but stepped down two days later for unknown reasons. Figueroa was then demoted to captain, and management of the department was turned over to the city administrator.

Chicago Police Investigate Live-Streamed Torture

0

NewsHub(CBS) — Four people are in custody after a live-streamed video of a duct-taped man appearing to be tortured.
Police say the man victimized in the broadcast is a special-needs person who had been reported missing from a suburb.
In the video, believed to be from Tuesday, the victim’s clothes were cut, he was peppered with cigarette ashes, and then his hair cut with a knife until his scalp bled. Several people can be seen laughing and eating during the attack, in addition to making disparaging remarks about President-elect Donald Trump and using racially charged language.
“It’s sickening,” Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson told reporters Wednesday evening at a news conference. “It’s makes you wonder what would make individuals treat somebody like that. I’ve been a cop for 28 years, and I’ve seen things that you shouldn’t see in a lifetime, but it still amazes me how you still see things that you just shouldn’t.
“I’m not going to say it shocked me, but it was sickening.”
The incident took place Tuesday in an apartment on the 3400 block of West Lexington on Chicago’s West Side, police said. Officers found the victim wandering the neighborhood in an obvious state of trauma, and soon authorities drew the connection with the disturbing Facebook video.
“You hear the narrative that police are backing down and not doing their jobs. This is a perfect example of them doing their jobs,” Johnson said.
Four people — two adult males and two adult females — are now in custody, and criminal charges are expected. It’s too soon to say whether the suspects would be charged with kidnapping or a hate crime, authorities said.
Three suspects are from Chicago, and a fourth is from northwest suburban Carpentersville.
“He is an acquaintance of one of these subjects,” Chicago Police Cmdr. Kevin Duffin said of a connection between the victim and the suspects. “Apparently, they met out in the suburbs. These subjects then stole a van out in the suburbs and then brought him into Chicago.”
The victim was treated and released from the hospital, police said. He is with his parents.
An investigation continues.
