Toyota plans to spend $35 million on partnerships with several universities, including Stanford , to study ways to make better batteries for electric vehicles.
The Japanese automaker said the universities will use artificial intelligence to test different battery chemistry combinations and to explore whether other materials, such as magnesium, could be used to make better batteries, said Brian Storey, program manager for the Toyota Research Institute.
Today’s hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles are powered by lithium ion batteries — a technology that Storey said was invented nearly 40 years ago.
“And we are just now beginning to perfect them,” Storey said.
Existing batteries continue to be costly and have range limitations that have held back industry sales compared with cheaper but less fuel-efficient gasoline engines.
Storey said Toyota and its university partners want to explore new ways of designing batteries, new ways of combining battery chemistry and other materials.
“There is an infinite number of knobs that you can tune when you are doing development work,” Storey said. “The hope is that the use of artificial intelligence will help us sort through the infinite number of things you can do.”

Toyota’s initial partners include Stanford University, MIT, the University of Michigan , the State University of New York at Buffalo, the University of Connecticut and the British-based materials science company Ilika. Toyota Research Institute also is in ongoing discussions with additional research partners.
Toyota said the programs will follow parallel paths, as researchers work to identify new materials for use in future energy systems as well as to develop tools and processes that can accelerate the design and development of new materials more broadly.
The Toyota Research Institute, created in 2015, was established to conduct research into auto safety for autonomous cars, increase access to mobility for those who otherwise cannot drive and help translate outdoor mobility technology into products for indoor mobility.

The Office of the U. S. Trade Representatives urged Japan on Friday to remove market-access barriers to U. S. exports such as agricultural products and automobiles.
In the 2017 National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers, the USTR criticized Japan over “the existence of substantial market access barriers” against U. S. agricultural products and “a variety of nontariff barriers” against American automobiles.
The report has increased the likelihood that the United States will push Japan to further open its market in these sectors—and reduce $69 billion in Tokyo’s trade surplus with Washington—during a high-level bilateral economic dialogue, the first round of which two governments are planning to hold April 18.
In the report, the USTR pointed to Japan’s “highly regulated and nontransparent” importation and distribution system for imported rice, saying such a system “limits the ability of U. S. exporters to meaningfully access Japan’s consumers,” it said.
The report quoted industry research as saying that Japanese consumers would buy high-quality U. S. rice if it were more readily available.
Although Japan is the fourth-largest market for U. S. agricultural products, the United States is unhappy with market access to Japan, the report said, citing “high tariffs” on grains, sugar, cirrus, wine, dairy and a variety of processed foods.

Wyraził nadzieję, że « te stanowiska, które wakowały, zostaną wreszcie wypełnione ». Prezydent przyznał, że kwestia związana z nieobsadzeniem stanowisk attachés « to był mankament », ale – wyraził przekonanie – « to zostaje usunięte i dalej będą się sprawy dobrze toczyły ».

Zadeklarował poparcie dla ustawowych zmian dotyczących udziału wydatków obronnych w PKB. « Będę zdecydowanie popierał, aby 2 procent PKB nie odnosiło się do budżetu z roku poprzedniego, tylko do planowanego budżetu. W ten sposób skalowanie tych wydatków będzie znacznie łatwiejsze » – zapewnił. Wyraził zadowolenie, że ubiegłoroczne wydatki Polski na wojsko wyniosły 2,01 procent PKB. « Cieszę się, że w tym zakresie realizujemy nasze zobowiązania sojusznicze » – powiedział.

Der FC St. Pauli steckt wieder knietief im Abstiegskampf der zweiten Fußball-Bundesliga. Die Hamburger verloren am Freitagabend nach schwacher Leistung das Duell beim FC Erzgebirge Aue mit 0:1 (0:1) und rutschten hinter die Sachsen auf den 16. Tabellenplatz ab. Schon am Dienstag (17.30 Uhr) geht es für St. Pauli in der Liga weiter: Dann gastiert der SV Sandhausen am Millerntor.
Der Abend im Erzgebirge war für die Mannschaft von Trainer Ewald Lienen einer zum Vergessen. Beim Aufwärmen verletzte sich Mittelfeldabräumer Bernd Nehrig und fiel ebenso aus wie Flügelstürmer Cenk Sahin (krank) und Stürmer Aziz Bouhaddouz (Gelbsperre). Das Trio wurde schmerzlich vermisst. In der Offensive waren die Norddeutschen in der ersten Hälfte absolut harmlos. Ein Kopfball von Lasse Sobiech im Anschluss an eine Ecke blieb die einzige halbwegs gefährliche Torannäherung (2.). Auch Aue bot spielerisch wenig – umso erstaunlicher, dass die Führung ein absolutes Traumtor war: Nicky Adler traf aus zehn Metern per Fallrückzieher (28.). Ein Treffer, der so gar nicht zum Niveau der Partie passte. Verdient war die Führung aber, da die Sachsen zuvor durch einen Freistoß von Mario Kvesic die beste Chance gehabt hatten (14.) und etwas zweikampfstärker waren.
Wer würde für Inspiration bei St. Pauli sorgen? Mats Möller Daehli versuchte viel, hatte aber keinen guten Tag erwischt. Bouhaddouz-Ersatz Lennart Thy blieb vollkommen blass und konnte sich überhaupt nicht durchsetzen. Aue zog sich zurück, überließ dem Gegner den Ball und wartete auf Kontergelegenheiten. Kvesic mit seinem zweiten guten Distanzschuss setzte das erste Ausrufezeichen in Durchgang zwei (59.). Und zehn Minuten später hatte endlich auch St. Pauli einen gefährlichen Torschuss: Der eingewechselte Youngster Jan-Marc Schneider traf per Direktabnahme die Oberkante der Latte. Ein wenig druckvoller agierten die Gäste in der Schlussphase, ein Treffer gelang ihnen jedoch nicht mehr. Kvesic hatte in der Nachspielzeit sogar das 2:0 auf dem Fuß, der Ball klatschte an die Latte.
Der Druck, am Dienstag gegen Sandhausen drei Punkte holen zu müssen, ist für die Lienen-Elf nun noch einmal deutlich größer geworden. Dann wird aber zumindest Bouhaddouz wieder dabei sein.

Everyone knows that Twitter has a harassment problem. And while the service has tried things like banning abusive users (both on a temporary and permanent basis) it hasn’t really fixed the problem.
Today, they’re announcing another sweeping change that fails to address the real problem: they’re cracking the egg.
In a long-winded post the service announced they are replacing the default egg with a unisex profile picture resembling a head and shoulders silhouette.
Beginning in 2010 all new accounts started with their default profile picture as an egg. Since then it has become a integral part of the Twitter brand. Everyone, even non-hardcore Twitter users, know the egg. Even CNN frequently features the egg when they show tweets from politicians and other celebrities.
Twitter gave a bunch of reasons for the switch. Some, like the fact that a more generic profile picture should encourage new users to actually upload a real profile picture of themselves, make sense.
But Twitter also said that they were switching up default profile pictures in an effort to combat harassment. Specifically they think that since abusive accounts often have the egg as a profile picture, there is now “an association between the default egg profile photo and negative behavior”.
Gee, ya think?
What Twitter isn’t understanding is that abusive tweets sent from an egg account will now just be abusive tweets sent from a silhouette account. Switching up the profile picture may be putting a bandaid on the problem, but it does nothing to fix harassment in the long run.
A abusive tweet is a abusive tweet whether it’s next to an egg, a silhouette or a real person’s avatar.
Plus, as a byproduct Twitter is killing off yet another part of Twitter’s unique internal language and identity – just like they did with @replies and favorites .
Don’t blame the egg, just fix the problem.

Apple is investing into the Indian ecosystem by opening its first App Accelerator in Bengaluru. The company announced plans to open this program back in May 2016.
Developers who sign up will get support from Apple’s team in India. Apple engineers will provide feedback, best practices and tools. There will also be presentations.
Once you’re selected into the program, it looks like you’ll get a weekly one-on-one meeting with Apple to talk about your app. By doing this, the company hopes that there will be even more useful apps coming out of India.
“We are impressed by the great entrepreneurial spirit in India, and are excited to provide a platform for these developers to share their innovations with customers around the world,” Apple SVP or Worldwide Marketing Philip Schiller said in a statement. “In just the first few weeks, we’ve already seen some incredible developers here at the App Accelerator Bengaluru, including Practo and Reliance Games, create innovative apps that can meet the needs of customers in India and around the world.”
It’s interesting to see that Apple is adopting a relatively open approach by launching programs with the tech community in India. It’s also worth noting that Apple chose India as the first country to try out this new program. But I hope there will be other app accelerators around the world.

Prezydent Zielonej Góry Janusz Kubicki zwolnił swojego pierwszego zastępcę Krzysztofa Kaliszuka. O jego odwołanie z funkcji wnioskowało Centralne Biuro Antykorupcyjne wskazując, że naruszył zapisy ustawy antykorupcyjnej.

Według CBA Kaliszuk zasiadając w zarządzie Stowarzyszenia Aeroklub Ziemi Lubuskiej naruszył ustawę o ograniczeniu prowadzenia działalności gospodarczej przez osoby pełniące funkcje publiczne. Biuro poinformowało w czwartek, że wniosek o jego odwołanie jest wynikiem kontroli przeprowadzonej przez poznańską Delegaturę Centralnego Biura Antykorupcyjnego w latach 2013-16.
CBA podało, że funkcjonariusze Biura ustalili, iż Kaliszuk „wbrew zakazowi zarządzał działalnością gospodarczą Stowarzyszenia Aeroklub Ziemi Lubuskiej w Zielonej Górze, jako członek jego zarządu”. Funkcję tę – podało CBA – „pełnił do 5 września ub. r., czyli do dnia rozpoczęcia kontroli”.
Biuro wnioskując o jego odwołanie przywołano przepisy mówiące, że
osoby podlegające ograniczeniom antykorupcyjnym w okresie sprawowania funkcji m.in. prezydenta miasta, zastępcy prezydenta, burmistrza, wójta, nie mogą prowadzić działalności gospodarczej na własny rachunek lub wspólnie z innymi osobami, a także zarządzać taką działalnością lub być przedstawicielem czy pełnomocnikiem w prowadzeniu takiej działalności.
Kaliszuk w wydanym w czwartek oświadczeniu napisał, że nie zgadza się z tezą o złamaniu przez niego ustawy o ograniczeniu prowadzenia działalności gospodarczej przez osoby pełniące funkcje publiczne.
Wyjaśniał, że w latach 2007-2016 pełnił społecznie funkcję członka zarządu Aeroklubu Ziemi Lubuskiej, a przed przyjęciem tej propozycji uzyskał pozytywne opinie prawne tak ze strony Urzędu Miasta jak i Aeroklubu pod kątem zgodności tej działalności z wymogami ustawy.
