BOSTON — Have you ever wanted to know what Tom Brady sees as he stares down a pass rush, scans the field for an open receiver … or brushes his teeth in the morning?
This year’s Super Bowl broadcast could be just what you’re looking for.
Thanks to a 360-degree replay technology called « Be the Player, » Fox TV broadcasters will be able to show a play from virtually any spot in the stadium within minutes of the action taking place. The spin around and zoom « freeD » system has been used at other sporting events — including the NBA and baseball All-Star Games and the Olympics — but this will be the first that goes the last step and shows things from the athlete’s perspective.
« The difference here is you would be able to go in and see from his vantage point what the player actually saw, » said Zac Fields, a senior vice president for graphic technology and integration at Fox Sports Group. « It’s something that most of us have never been able to see before. The vantage point that most of us have on TV is really different than what the guys see on the field. That’s what the promise of this technology is.  »
Intel is rolling out the new technology at this year’s Super Bowl, and promoting it in an ad that will feature Brady in his everyday life — waking up, making breakfast, brushing his teeth — with the tagline: « Intel replay 360 makes anything look epic.  » As the Patriots quarterback snarfs down a pancake, the camera spins around to a new angle and shows the crumbs falling from his mouth.
And, if New England makes it to the Feb. 5 Super Bowl in Houston, there will be even more opportunities to see things from Brady’s perspective.
« It’s something that fans have always dreamed about: ‘What did Tom see when he threw that pass?' » Jeff Hopper, the general manager of strategy and marketing for the Intel Sports Group, told The Associated Press in advance of the announcement. « Everyone wants to be the player, to see what it’s like to see it from that point of view.  »
To make the « Be the Player » video possible, Intel has installed 38 separate 5K resolution cameras in a perimeter inside NRG Stadium, creating what Hopper calls « a volumetric capture of everything that’s going on the field.  » The cameras are connected by five miles of fiber optic cables to a special control room, where a half-dozen Intel producers, working with one from the Fox Sports broadcast, can pick out and package the replays that will be used in the broadcast.
The massive amount of data — about 1 terabyte per 15-30 second clip — allows producers to position a « virtual camera » anywhere it wants — including, virtually, inside a player’s helmet. (Early versions even toyed with superimposing a facemask on the screen, though that has apparently been dropped.) It will take about two minutes to produce the clips, meaning it’s not yet ready for instant replay but could, for example, be available to show a new view of a touchdown by the time the teams are done with the extra point or kickoff.
In an interview in Boston’s Back Bay this week, Hopper said there could be up to 20 « Be the Player » replays, though ultimately it is up to Fox to decide how to use it.
« It will depend upon the story you are trying to tell, » Fields said. « It’s not something we’re planning on using because it is a new bell and whistle. It is a storytelling tool, and that’s how we’re planning to utilize it.  »
Right now, use of the system is limited to big events: It took about a month to retrofit the stadium in Houston with all of the equipment needed for the freeD data capture. Also, each 15-30 clip consists of about 1 terabyte of data.
But Hopper said new stadiums are already being built with the cameras in mind.
« Anyone who’s building a new stadium now is saying, ‘What do we need to do to make it freeD ready?' » he said. « Because everyone sees it as the future.  »
Eventually, Hopper said, the technology will not be limited to storytelling.
Teams and leagues are hoping to mine the data to improve performance. In the X-Games, Hopper said, the athletes were eager to figure out how high they jumped and use that information to tune their techniques — or just brag about big air with the competition.
In time, coaches will be able to use the video to see what their player saw, instead of relying on overhead shots of the field. And, as the turnaround time quickens, the technology would also help replay reviews by giving officials the ability to freeze the action and zoom in at any angle to look, for example, to see whether a player’s knee was down before the ball popped out.
« We’re working with pretty much the entire sports world, » Hopper said. « All the leagues, all the teams. I don’t think there’s anyone that we’re not. We can’t do them all, but we’re talking with them all.  »
And Hopper envisions a sports world where every fan will be able to immerse himself in the game on his phone or a virtual reality headset — not just view the shots curated by a TV producer sitting in a trailer next to the stadium.
« That’s good; I think it’s interesting. But the transformative nature of what we’re working on is: Everybody gets to do it themselves, » Hopper said. « Ultimately you’ll be able to be on the field, with the players — the best players in the world — whatever sport that is, whether it be soccer, football or cricket, whatever. You’ll be able to be part of the action. I don’t think you can get any more immersed. «

GAINESVILLE, Ga. – Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson played a big role in the Tigers’ win Monday night.
To show the Georgia native some support, the police department in his hometown of Gainesville put up the Clemson flag in front of their office to represent the national champions.
The Gainesville Police Department also posted a picture on their Facebook page to say congratulations to Deshaun and his team.
« We are so proud of you, » the police department said.
Watson completed 36 of 56 passes for 420 yards and three touchdowns in Clemson’s 35-31 win over Alabama in the College Football Playoff championship game. He also ran for a score.

The 21-year-old’s next stop is the NFL; however, that doesn’t mean the Clemson quarterback is thinking about where he’ll go in the NFL draft.

Watson said he’s focused on improving, and not his chances of going No. 1 overall. Watson is skipping his senior season at Clemson to go pro, making that decision after going 32-3 as the Tigers’ starter and earning his degree.
Watson said Tuesday he won’t « get caught up in the hype of the draft and the first pick and all that stuff. God has a plan for me. «

Rory McIlroy made an impressive start to 2017 with a new set of clubs, shooting a 5-under 67 Thursday in the first round of the SA Open to put himself a stroke off the lead.
Making his first appearance at the tournament since 2008, McIlroy rolled in seven birdies — including four straight from Nos. 14-17 after starting at the 10th at Glendower Golf Club.
South African players Trevor Fisher Jr. and Keith Horne shared the lead after rounds of 66.
With Nike announcing last year it would no longer be making golf clubs and balls, the second-ranked McIlroy has been testing out new woods, irons and a putter from other manufacturers and said his new bag « is working pretty well.  »
« I’m sure as I get accustomed to them — I mean, it’s nice to play my first competitive round and play like this — I’ll get even more dialed in, and chop and change a little bit, » McIlroy said.
The Northern Irishman is the standout player in Johannesburg this week, making an earlier-than-usual start to his golfing year as a favor to Ernie Els, the South African great and the host of the SA Open. The galleries were drawn to McIlroy despite his early tee time of 7:10 a.m. local time and he responded with an adventurous round that included a 392-yard drive on the first hole, drawing gasps from spectators.
A 20-foot putt on No. 17 completed his four-hole run of birdies before McIlroy rolled in an 8-footer on No. 2 to move to 5 under. Poor approach shots led to bogeys on the fourth and fifth, but he replied with a tee shot on the par-3 sixth that stopped on the slope in the middle of the green and rolled back down to two feet, for a tap-in birdie.
He was in the rough on his final three holes but scrambled to par Nos. 7 and 9 and made a birdie on No. 8.
« I gave myself chances, felt I missed a few but I played well, » McIlroy said. « It was a bit adventurous on the back nine, scrambled a bit and did my bit to salvage a few holes.  »
South African players have won 13 of the last 19 editions of the SA Open, and five of the top seven on Thursday were home players.
Fisher Jr., also starting at No. 10 in the morning, made seven birdies in eight holes from the 12th to the first and parred his way home. Horne joined his compatriot in the lead with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 coming home, continuing his good form from the Alfred Dunhill Championship in December where he finished tied for 11th.
Three more South Africans, Thomas Aiken, Dean Burmester and Jbe Kruger, were tied with McIlroy after 67s, along with European Tour rookie Jordan Smith of England.
Els and defending champion Brandon Stone started with 74s. Six-time major champion Nick Faldo was at 2-under 70.

As a feature-length director, Ben Affleck hit home runs in his first three trips to the plate with “Gone Baby Gone,” “The Town” and “Argo.”
In at-bat No. 4, he flies out to medium-deep right field.
Affleck directs, adapts a screenplay based on a Dennis Lehane novel, produces AND stars in “Live by Night,” a curiously unfocused Prohibition-era gangster epic with some well-choreographed action scenes, a few provocative plot threads — but an increasingly meandering main story line that goes from intriguing to confounding to preachy to what exactly are we even watching here?
Affleck’s first problem as a director is his own performance as Boston-born Irish mobster Joe Coughlin, a big lunk in snazzy suits and wide-brimmed hats who tells his tale in flat, cliché-riddled, voice-over narration. It’s as if Joe himself isn’t all that interested in The Story of Joe.
After seeing combat in World War I and witnessing “good men dying for no good reason” in France while the men who start wars and run the world suffer no consequences, Joe returns home with one goal: to grab life by the collar and live it to the fullest, consequences be damned.
“I left a soldier and came home an outlaw,” says Joe.
The earliest sequences in “Live by Night” are the most compelling. Joe and his small crew, including the obligatory wisecracking, loyal sidekick Dion Bartolo (a miscast Chris Messina, sporting crooked teeth and a paunch), are knocking off banks left and right while trying to steer clear of the mob wars between the Italians and the Irish.
Fat chance. Joe’s street smart, but he’s not too bright. Seems as if half the city knows he’s a bank robber.
Joe’s father (an excellent Brendan Gleeson) is the deputy superintendent of police, torn between defending the law and protecting his son’s not-too-secret criminal shenanigans. Meanwhile, Joe’s carrying on a steamy affair with one Emma Gould (Sienna Miller), a charming floozy from the wrong side of town who is also the mistress of Irish mob boss Albert White (Robert Glenister).
That entanglement creates a bloody mess that leads to Joe winding up in Tampa, working for Italian mob boss Maso Pescatore (Remo Girone), taking control of moving mass quantities of illegal “demon rum,” running nightclubs — and falling in love with Zoe Saldana’s Graciella Suarez.
Affleck the director does a fine job staging shootouts and car chases and bloody confrontations in nightclubs and offices. When the violence comes, it comes hard and heavy — and in sometimes shocking fashion. It’s mob gunfire in the tradition of Coppola and Scorsese.
Once we’re in Florida, however, the screenplay weaves this way and that, as Joe wavers between executing his mission with cold-hearted efficiency and experiencing moments of conscience at the most inconvenient times. What Affleck the actor fails to convey is the motivation behind some of Joe’s more dubious decisions.
Chris Cooper is the Tampa police chief, one Irving Figgis, who seems awfully naïve for someone who says he’s killed seven men in his life. Elle Fanning is the police chief’s daughter, Loretta, who is nearly swallowed up by evil before she emerges as a preacher railing against sin and corruption. (A scene where the police chief physically disciplines his daughter for her past transgressions is uncomfortable and creepy and just plain bizarre.)
Oh, and let’s not forget the KKK, conveniently inserted into the Florida timeline so we can root for Joe and his thugs, because hey, they’re not as horrible as these dimwit inbred hate-filled clowns.
Zoe Saldana is wasted as Joe’s loyal wife, whose main function is to worry about Joe and warn Joe he’ll lose himself if he commits too many terrible deeds, and then to worry about Joe even more. Sienna Miller’s Emma and Brendan Gleeson’s policeman are two of the more interesting characters — but they’re not with us for nearly enough scenes.
Chris Cooper’s Chief Figgis is a complex man given to speeches about how he rubs elbows with the corrupt but is incorruptible, a righteous hypocrite with deep inner demons. Cooper’s performance is raw and real and unsettling. It’s as if he’s in a better, more interesting, more challenging film.
Misgivings aside, I was enjoying “Live by Night” as a guilty pleasure of sorts and was on the verge of giving it a qualified recommendation until the last 10 minutes, which are equal parts predictable and way, way over the top.
