NFL Week 2 overreactions: Is Cowboys' offense in trouble?

0

Dallas’ attack hit a wall in Denver, but there’s no reason to sound the alarm just yet.
Week 2 of the NFL schedule provided a clearer picture of where teams stand, but there’s still a small sample size for any assessment of this season so far. But that won’t stop some from arriving at some premature conclusions.
Here are five overreactions from Sunday’s action that we’re pushing back against:
The Cowboys are overrated
It’s not a shock that the Dallas Cowboys lost to the Denver Broncos 42-17 on Sunday. What’s surprising is how the defeat unfolded.
The Broncos crafted an excellent defensive game plan by loading the box with extra defenders and clogging running lanes. Running back Ezekiel Elliott, who led the NFL in rushing last year as a rookie, was held to an astonishing career low of 8 yards on nine carries.
With Elliott’s role diminishing as Denver built its lead, the threat of the play-action passing game – one of Dallas’ top tactics – vanished. That left quarterback Dak Prescott, who attempted a career-high 50 passes, to keep the Cowboys in it.
But the Broncos held firm behind arguably the best secondary in the NFL behind cornerbacks Chris Harris Jr. and Aqib Talib, who returned an interception 103 yards to ice the game. The Broncos also lined Harris up at safety several times, further confusing Prescott.
Denver’s signing of nose tackle Domata Peko has proved to be one of the top low-key additions of the offseason. The Broncos, after ranking 28th in the NFL last season in rushing defense (130.3 yards allowed per game), are now the league’s fourth-best outfit through two games (52 yards allowed per game).
The good news for the Cowboys is that not many teams are built like the Broncos, who boast rare talent at every level on defense as well as a tough setting for any visiting team.
Sunday’s loss exposed some of the Cowboys’ flaws, but the team’s offensive talent and experienced coaching staff will keep it a contender in the NFC this season.

Trouble ahead for Packers offense?
Just one week after delivering enough when tested by the Seattle Seahawks, the Green Bay Packers offense plodded against the Atlanta Falcons in a 34-23 loss Sunday night.
Aaron Rodgers’ attack finished with a respectable 367 total yards. But the Packers spent most of the game trying to dig themselves out of a large deficit, which swelled to 31-7 in the third quarter. Up to that point, with 14:04 left to play in the period, the Packers had sputtered to only 92 yards of total offense.
There was an easy explanation for the uncharacteristic outing, however. Injuries kept starting offensive tackles David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga inactive.
The effects were clear, as the Falcons sacked Rodgers three times and hit him seven times. He never settled into a rhythm, and the pressure from the edge also blocked his escape routes out of the pocket, limiting his ability to extend plays.
Then, after the team’s opening drive Sunday night, top receiver Jordy Nelson exited with a quad injury. Fellow receiver Randall Cobb left the game in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury.
Simply put, this Packers team was shorthanded. A fully healthy group led by Rodgers should be just fine.
Le’Veon Bell isn’t the same running back he once was
It has been a rough start for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ second-team all-pro running back. Though his team is 2-0 after a 26-9 win against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Bell hasn’t produced like he has in the past.
Bell gained 87 rushing yards against Minnesota, but it came on 27 carries (3.2 yards per attempt). He caught four passes for just 4 yards.
His two-week totals (37 rushes for 119 yards; seven catches for 19 yards) is lagging well behind his previous efficiency, as he averaged 4.9 yards per rush in the past two season. His longest play was a 15-yard carry Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns, and he still has not scored a touchdown.
Bell’s early struggles, though, were to be expected.
This is what happens when a player – even one as talented and athletic as Bell – misses the entire offseason program and training camp because of a contract dispute. After the Steelers placed the exclusive franchise tag on him in February and no long-term deal was reached, Bell opted to stay on his own until early September.
Bell said he stayed in shape and worked out while he was gone, but it’s impossible to replicate live football work in training sessions.
Pittsburgh still looks like a top team in the AFC. But after spending eight months away from his teammates and away from practices, it’s going to take Bell some time to round back into form.
Time to bench DeShone Kizer
The Cleveland Browns are 0-2, and their quarterback has struggled. Some things feel like they never change.
In this case, though, Cleveland needs to continue to exercise patience after its rookie passer struggled in a 24-10 loss Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens,
This was not a good game for Kizer, who left briefly with a migraine. He threw behind receivers, again held onto the ball too long, and committed four turnovers (three interceptions, one fumble). He completed only 15 of his 31 passes for 182 yards.
Kizer was always going to be a project quarterback who would need time to assimilate into the NFL. He flashes potential behind great arm strength, but he needs to do a better job of anticipating throws. Benching him after appointing him the starter would only stunt his development under coach Hue Jackson.
In the short term, neither Kevin Hogan or Cody Kessler represent an upgrade.
The full outlook for Kizer is still to be determined. But the Browns need to give themselves time to assess what they have — especially given that they are likely a season or two from competing, anyway.
Monday NFL injury news: Falcons LB Vic Beasley expected to miss a month
Season’s over for the Chargers
Once again, the AFC West looks like one of the NFL’s toughest divisions.
The Broncos, the Oakland Raiders, and the Kansas City Chiefs, are 2-0. Los Angeles, meanwhile, is at 0-2.
Historically, since the league switched its playoff structure in 1990, only 12% of teams who have started 0-2 reached the postseason.
Despite the early hole, the Chargers still have plenty of chances to overcome their slow start.
More firepower is need from an offense led by Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon after the group scored just 38 points in two games. But Los Angeles lost to the Broncos and Miami Dolphins by a combined five points, with Younghoe Koo missing game-defining kicks in the final seconds of both contests.
Already having one loss in the division and two in the conference would be problematic in tiebreak scenarios. But there’s just still so much football left to be played after the two close losses. The margin of error just got far slimmer.

Rolling Stone, imperiled bible of boomer culture, to be sold

0

Loaded? You — yes you — can buy most important magazine in the history of popular music
Rolling Stone — the 50-year-old magazine that helped report on and create generations of popular culture — is up for sale. While the magazine and its web portal will continue to publish, founder and longtime leading editor Jann Wenner is selling his controlling interest in the title,, potentially bringing to an end a rare five decades of independent status. Already, Wenner Media, the publishing group behind Rolling Stone, has sold off other assets, including Men’s Journal and the entertainment publication Us Weekly. As the Times reported, the push for company streamlining and the upcoming sale has been led by Gus Wenner, Jann’s 27-year-old son, who currently runs day-to-day operations at Rolling Stone. BandLab Technologies — a Singapore music-technology firm — purchased a 49 percent share in the company in 2016. The sale comes after several years of declining sales and bad headlines for the title that not only reported on the music, films and cultural movements of three generations, but transformed modern journalism on political and social issues as well. A factually compromised 2014 feature on an alleged rape purportedly committed by members of a fraternity at the University of Virginia cost the magazine not only journalistic esteem, but a reported $3 million in damages. The magazine also collected criticism for a cover image that seemed to overly humanize Boston Marathon Bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in 2013. Other, similar issues have sparked conversation in media circles. In general, the late tenure of Mr. Wenner and the rising influence of the younger Wenner has been pockmarked by whispered accusations of and rising questions of the title’s ongoing relevance. Rolling Stone’s cultural subject matter often looked backward toward its own boomer glory days, a tendency that often caused its up-to-date coverage of more modern music and entertainment to seem out of place (though its straight-news reporting remains fresh). It is hard to pin Rolling Stone’s troubles and its move toward sale on one aspect of the magazine or one person on its staff. Overall, print subscriptions and the revenues from print advertising across the industry have declined, and income from digital publishing has not risen to meet the deficit.

Silicon Valley legend John Chambers retires

Cisco Systems CEO Chuck Robbins to add title of executive chairman, ending Chambers’ more than two decade run at the networking company.
SAN FRANCISCO — John Chambers helped build Cisco Systems into one of Silicon Valley’s go-go success stories in the 1990s and early 2000s — briefly making it the world’s most valuable company. On Monday, he retired.
Chambers, 68, will not be up for re-election as executive chairman in December, the networking company said Monday, ending his two-decade-plus reign at the company. Chambers joined Cisco in 1991 as head of sales.
Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins, 51, will add executive chairman to his title.
« It is time for Cisco to move on to its next generation of leadership including at the board and Chairman level and to position this seamlessly for the future, » Chambers wrote in a Sept. 13 letter to Cisco’s board of directors. « It is also time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life, on both a personal and business level. »
Shares of Cisco, which have gained 7% this year, are flat at $32.53 in mid-morning trading.
Under Chambers as CEO, Cisco’s annual sales rocketed from $1.2 billion in 1995 to nearly $50 billion in 2015. But its double-digit growth stalled amid wrenching industry changes as smaller, nimbler rivals found ways to design and manage computer networks.
During its fiscal fourth quarter, the San Jose-based company last month reported $12.1 billion in revenue, down 4% from the same quarter a year earlier. It earnings were 48 cents per share, or 61 cents on a non-GAAP basis.
In 2000, the company ( CSCO) was briefly the most valuable company in the world, with a market capitalization of $557 billion. But it scuffled after the Internet-stock bubble burst, and it has never regained its lofty standing. Its current market cap is about $160.6 billion.
Jack Gold, principal analyst at J. Gold Associates in Boston, deemed Chambers’ tenure a « mixed legacy » after the early glory years that established Cisco as the dominant networking company.
« (Chambers) presided over a troubled time for Cisco as the markets quickly passed them by and Cisco was mired in legacy products, » Gold says. « That said, he also was instrumental in turning the ship around, although it took longer than everyone expected — it’s a pretty massive ship to steer a new course. »
The avuncular Chambers, who was Silicon Valley’s longest-serving CEO, transitioned to executive chairman in July 2015. At the time, he took on a role similar to Oracle’s Larry Ellison and Alibaba’s Jack Ma who, before Chambers, took on new, non-CEO roles at their companies.

An update to iOS 11 and watchOS 4 will bring Venmo-like, person-to-person payments to the iPhon, iPad and Apple Watch, Apple said. It’s then users can pay back friends / get paid back via iMessages and Siri.

Young immigrants shout down Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi

0

U. S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has been shouted down at a San Francisco event by young immigrants protesting her conversations with President Donald Trump on immigration policy.
Several dozen young immigrants shouted down Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the U. S. House, on Monday during an event in San Francisco, following her recent conversations with President Donald Trump over the future of a program that grants many of them legal status.
« We are immigrant youth, undocumented and unafraid, » they shouted as they overtook an event Pelosi was holding to encourage passing legislation that would give many young immigrants legal status.
After smiling and occasionally trying to speak through much of the protest, an aggravated Pelosi told the protesters to « just stop it, now, » shortly before she was led out of the room.
She was appearing with Democratic U. S. Reps. Barbara Lee and Jared Huffman at College Track San Francisco, a program to expand college access. She was scheduled to appear Monday afternoon in Sacramento for a similar event.
The protests appeared aimed at Pelosi’s recent engagement with Trump on the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which gives temporary legal protections to immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children or by parents who overstayed visas. Trump said in early September he will halt the program in six months if Congress does not act to continue it.
Last week, Pelosi and Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer met with Trump twice and discussed a deal to extend the program. Schumer and Pelosi said they reached a deal with the White House that did not include funding for Trump’s promised border wall. But the White House and Congressional Republicans say nothing is finalized.
« Democrats created an out-of-control deportation machine, » the protesters yelled. « Democrats are not the resistance to Trump. »
« You’ve had your say, and it’s beautiful, » Pelosi told the demonstrators at one point. But the shouting did not stop.
Pelosi told The Associated Press last Friday in an interview that she and Schumer are looking for ways to « build some trust and confidence » with Trump. She says it does not matter whether or not she and Trump like each other.
« Right now, I want him to like the Dreamers, » she said, using the nickname for young immigrants in the deferred action program.
Trump has said he wants to protect those immigrants, despite his decision to wind down the program doing so over six months.

Putin obserwował Zapad'17

0

W poniedziałek 18 września prezydent Władimir Putin odwiedził jeden z poligonów, na których odbywają się manewry Zapad’17.
Galeria: Manewry Zapad’17. Rosyjskie MON ujawnia zdjęcia z ćwiczeń
Prezydent Rosji wspólnie z ministrem obrony narodowej obserwował ćwiczenia wojsk Białorusi i Rosji na poligonie Łużskij w obwodzie leningradzkim. W poniedziałek przypadł główny etap manewrów. Dzisiejszy scenariusz to przedarcie się przez granicę bojowników nielegalnych ugrupowań zbrojnych i uformowanie się z nich oddziałów podejmujących działania terrorystyczne, m.in. porwanie dużej ilości lekkich samolotów i maszyn bezzałogowych.
Rosjanie i Białorusini ćwiczyli walkę w przypadku podobnego zagrożenia przy użyciu przeciwlotniczych systemów artyleryjsko-rakietowych Pancyr S-1 i zestawów Strieła-1 i systemów artyleryjsko-rakietowych Tunguska. W manewrach udział brały także czołgi T-90, bombowce Su-24 oraz śmigłowce szturmowe Mi-24, Mi-28 i Ka-52.
Zapad’17
Manewry „Zapad” mają długą historię, bowiem Armia Radziecka po raz pierwszy zorganizowała takie ćwiczenia w 1973 roku. Największe z nich odbyły się w 1981 r. Trwały osiem dni i wzięło w nich udział ponad 100 tys. żołnierzy. W XXI wieku manewry miały miejsce w 2009 i 2013 r. Za każdym razem zakładały agresywny scenariusz. Symulowano m.in. wkroczenie na terytorium Polski.

Snapchat yanks Al Jazeera in Saudi Arabia

App says it did so at government request

LOS ANGELES — Al Jazeera, the Middle East TV and online network based in Qatar, has seen its Discover channel pulled from Snapchat in Saudi Arabia.
The request came from the Saudi Arabia government, according to Snapchat. “We make an effort to comply with local laws in the countries where we operate, » said the parent company, Snap, Inc. in a statement.
Discover is the platform where media organizations post videos, photos and text articles in a bid to reach the young consumers who frequent the Snapchat app.
Al Jazeera, which is a major source of news for Arabs living in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar and other Middle East countries, called the move a « clear attack on the rights of journalists and media professionals to report and cover stories freely from around the world. »
« We find Snapchat’s action to be alarming and worrying, » said Al Jazeera Media Network’s acting Director-General Mostefa Souag, in a statement on the Al Jazeera website. « This sends a message that regimes and countries can silence any voice or platform they don’t agree with by exerting pressure on the owners of social media platforms and content distribution companies. »
Snap says the Al Jazeera channel is still available in 14 other Middle East countries.
According to Newsweek, the dispute has more to do with local politics, specifically relations between the governments of Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
Snapchat, whose core audience is teens, is said to be quite popular in Saudi Arabia, a country where half the population is under 25.

The Best WordPress Web Hosting Services of 2017

0

WordPress, with its wide array of themes and plug-ins, is the way to go if you want to build a website. These 10 tested hosts give you the tools to get the job done.
WordPress, the world’s top content management system (CMS), is far more than just a simple blogging platform. The software has a huge library of free and premium themes and plug-ins that make it the foundation that supports millions of websites, including personal and small business pages, and even big-name high-traffic sites like Best Buy and The New Yorker. If you’ve thought about building a website, you should definitely consider a WordPress web host, as they offer many benefits.
Most web hosts offer some form of WordPress service, be it an optimized or managed environment. Both types boast platforms specifically designed for WordPress. In each, the CMS comes preinstalled, so you don’t have to download and set up a WordPress installation as you’d do when using a traditional web hosting environment.
Depending on the web host, you can enjoy a variety of site-friendly features, including automatic data backups, page caching, and automatic CMS updates. Please note that some web hosts restrict a short list of plug-ins that may duplicate features already built into the optimized or managed setup or negatively affect your site’s performance.
Managed WordPress builds upon optimized WordPress hosting in a few key areas. Your website will be assigned a customer support squad that isn’t just super-knowledgeable in all things WordPress, but also ensures that you don’t have to ever worry about going into your site’s back end to do anything more than create content. Managed WordPress hosts typically offer site-staging for posts and pages so that you can test them before they go live, automatic malware detection and removal, and enhanced security, too.
Please understand that often the dividing line between optimized WordPress and managed WordPress is quite thin. You should contact a web host’s customer support team to learn the specifics of its WordPress hosting.
WordPress hosting prices are all over the map. Entry-level plans will cost roughly the same as shared web hosting, but higher-tier plans can scale upward to around $60 per month. The upside? Your WordPress installation should run more smoothly in a WordPress environment than in a traditional hosting environment. In addition, going the managed WordPress route may save you money in the long run, as it might save you the cost of hiring a system administrator to perform the same tasks. This can be particularly beneficial to small businesses.
Before you sign up for a WordPress web hosting service, you should look for these attractive—and possibly essential—features. Ideally, you’ll want to invest in a WordPress host that provides unlimited monthly data transfers, email, storage, and 24/7 support. Many WordPress web hosts that place caps on those features, particularly on the managed side of things. WP Engine, for example, limits sites to 400,000 visitors and a relatively paltry 30GB of storage. If you expect lots of site growth, you’ll want a host that can properly accommodate your website’s future expansion.
Additionally, you’ll want a service that offers Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) if you plan to sell products. Ever see a green padlock in your browser’s address bar while you’re on your bank’s website? That’s the symbol that tells visitors that SSL is in place. It’s a symbol of trustworthiness.
An SSL connection encrypts the data that travels between your site and users’ web browsers, thus safeguarding the transmission of purchasing information. All the WordPress hosting services in this roundup offer SSL certificates, but the prices vary from company to company. Some companies include a free SSL certificate when you sign up for a hosting plan, while others charge close to $100.
Naturally, your web hosting needs will differ from the next person’s, but keep these features in mind if you want a silky smooth WordPress experience.
The aforementioned features are valuable to the web hosting experience, but none can match the importance of site uptime. If your site is down, clients or customers will be unable to find you or access your blog or your products or services.
We’ve added uptime monitoring to our review process, and the results show that most web hosts do an excellent job of keeping sites up and running. web hosts with uptime issues cannot qualify for inclusion among the best services in the field, no matter how solid the rest of their offerings are.
If you’re planning to create a WordPress-powered site, there’s no reason not to invest in WordPress-specific hosting. It’s chock full of benefits. That said, a WordPress environment won’t allow you to set up a non-WordPress site—that’s something else to keep in mind, especially if you have a site in mind that will rely on specific frameworks, for example. In such instances, you’ll want to go build your site on shared, VPS, or dedicated web hosting services. And, if you want to start your own web hosting company, reseller hosting is the way to go.
You also need to consider how long you’ll need WordPress web hosting. If it’s a short-term project—say, less than a month or two—you’ll typically receive a refund should you cancel your hosting within 60 days. Some companies offer 30-day money-back guarantees, while others offer 90-day money-back guarantees. Once again, it’s beneficial to do your homework.
We’ve reviewed many WordPress hosting services and included the best of the bunch in this guide. The chart above, which includes traditional web hosts that offer WordPress hosting and dedicated WordPress services, gives you a quick overview of the features you can find with each service. If you want a more in-depth look at WordPress hosting services, read the full reviews, linked below.
