Apple Watch Series 3 reviews are out and here's what people are saying

Apple Watch Series 3 reviews are out. Most reviewers suggest buying the GPS model instead of the one that can also place phone calls.
Reviews of the Apple Watch Series 3 — which includes GPS and optional cellular connectivity for placing phone calls on the go — are out.
The consensus seems to be that it’s convenient to have a watch with a connection when you don’t have a cell phone, but that the battery life is pretty bad when you’re using it in those situations. Most reviewers don’t see the cellular model as a worthy upgrade.
Ed Baig’s review: Apple Watch review: Ditch the iPhone
The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern said that users will be « lucky if the battery allows you to roam on cellular for longer than half a day—especially if you’re making calls. » Stern also experienced dropped calls when using the watch on AT&T and T-Mobile. Stern ultimately recommends sticking with a Series 2 or, if you have to make the choice, picking the GPS-only Series 3 model until cellular connectivity improves on the connected option.
CNET’s Scott Stein said the Apple Watch Series 3 is the « best phone watch » he’s ever tested. Stein also didn’t seem as bothered by the call quality, but did complain about poor battery life when it’s being used as a phone and with GPS on. Additionally Stein says the added cost required to pay for service with a cellular carrier keeps it from being a « must have upgrade. »
The Verge’s Lauren Goode opens with: « You should still call me on my cellphone. » Goode said that cellular connectivity made both interacting with Siri and sending messages difficult, since there wasn’t always a reliable connection. Apple explained to Goode this is because the watch might be auto-connecting to Wi-Fi networks and a fix is in the works. Battery life was also a problem for Goode, who said the watch fell below 30-percent battery before noon. Goode ultimately says she « can’t recommend buying it. »
Wired’s David Pierce said performance was « dramatically better » than his older Apple Watch and that battery life was about 5 hours on LTE or a full day when he wasn’t connected to a cellular network. He also seemed to have no issue using the watch for phone calls and pulling up Siri and said the Apple Watch Series 3 is the best workout gadget « of its kind. » Pierce said this is the first Apple Watch « that really works » but says you should be aware of battery life limitations. He just wishes it had an always-on display.
The New York Times’ Brian Chen liked the Apple Watch Series 3 but said the « value of the cellular capabilities on the Apple Watch is questionable considering the price you pay each month. » Chen said this is the first smartwatch he can « confidently recommend people buy » but says most people don’t need the connected model.

Toshiba selects Bain group as buyer of its prized chip business: sources

0

Japan’s embattled Toshiba Corp (6502. T) has chosen a group led by U. S. private equity firm Bain Capital to buy its prized memory chip unit, three people with knowledge of the talks said on Wednesday, a last-minute dramatic twist to a highly contentious auction.
TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s embattled Toshiba Corp ( 6502. T) has chosen a group led by U. S. private equity firm Bain Capital to buy its prized memory chip unit, three people with knowledge of the talks said on Wednesday, a last-minute dramatic twist to a highly contentious auction.
But it’s unclear whether the decision by Toshiba’s board will mean the sale will now proceed smoothly, as rival suitor Western Digital Corp ( WDC. O) has initiated legal action, arguing no deal can be done without its consent due to its position as Toshiba’s joint venture chip partner.
The Bain-led offer for the world’s No. 2 producer of NAND semiconductors is worth some $22 billion, sources have said.
It has partnered with South Korea’s SK Hynix Inc ( 000660. KS) and brought in U. S. buyers of Toshiba chips such as Apple Inc ( AAPL. O) and Dell Inc [DI. UL] to bolster its bid. Memory product maker Kingston Technology and data storage firm Seagate Technology Plc ( STX. O) are also part of the group.
The make-up of the consortium could spell trouble ahead, said Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Ace Research Institute.
“The large number of stakeholders could complicate decision-making and slow down key investment decisions,” he said, adding that the participation of Toshiba clients would also sap the ability of the chips business to negotiate competitively on pricing.
Bain’s win, first reported by Reuters, has been hard fought as wrangling went down to the wire and late on Tuesday the Western Digital-backed consortium, which includes KKR & Co LP ( KKR. N), appeared to be in the lead, sources said.
But the California-based firm would not agree to limits to any future stake in the chip business that had been demanded by Toshiba, said one person briefed on the matter.
A separate source said that an official announcement by Toshiba on the deal had been held up as the Japanese firm was still waiting for commitment letters from all of the Bain consortium members.
Sources declined to be identified as they were not authorised to speak about discussions on the sale.
Toshiba declined to comment. A representative for Bain was not immediately available for comment while SK Hynix declined to comment. SCRAMBLE FOR FUNDS
After a slew of revised bids and changing alliances among suitors, an agreement comes not a moment too soon for Toshiba. It has been under pressure from its lenders to clinch a deal this month to ensure enough time for regulatory reviews so that it can finish the sale by the end of the financial year in March.
If it doesn‘t, it won’t have the billions of dollars it needs to plug a huge hole in its finances caused by its now bankrupt U. S. nuclear unit Westinghouse, and could be delisted.
Even without that problem staring it in the face, the semiconductor business requires huge amounts of investment and Toshiba’s chip unit runs the danger of losing its competitive ability as rivals such as Samsung Electronics ( 005930. KS) roll out big capital spending plans.
Western Digital has already taken its dispute with Toshiba to the International Court of Arbitration to prevent a sale without its consent, and a source with knowledge of the matter has previously said it is prepared to seek an immediate court injunction should the deal not go its way.
A representative for Western Digital was not immediately available for comment.
The Bain-led group had at one stage been chosen as preferred bidder but those talks lapsed as Japan government investors who had been part of that consortium told Toshiba they were reluctant to close a deal in the face of legal challenges posed by Western Digital.
The Bain consortium has since revised the offer, aiming to get around that problem by inviting the state-backed investors – the Innovation Network Corp of Japan (INCJ) and the Development Bank of Japan – to invest in the business only after any arbitration with Western Digital is settled.
But sources familiar with the talks have said it remains unclear if INCJ will commit to joining the consortium even when the legal dispute is resolved, casting uncertainty over the whether Japanese government will be able to prevail in its desire to have the chip business mainly under domestic control.

Erdbeben in Mexiko: "Die Zeit läuft gegen uns"

0

S Korea says Trump's warning to N. Korea 'firm and specific'

SEOUL/TOKYO: U. S. President Donald Trump’s speech to the United Nations, where he warned he would « totally destroy » North Korea if threatened, reinforced the need for Pyongyang to realise it must give up its nuclear weapons, South Korea said on…
SEOUL/TOKYO: U. S. President Donald Trump’s speech to the United Nations, where he warned he would « totally destroy » North Korea if threatened, reinforced the need for Pyongyang to realise it must give up its nuclear weapons, South Korea said on Wednesday.
In a hard-edged speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump mocked North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a « rocket man » for his repeated ballistic missile tests.
« We view the speech as portraying a firm and specific stance on the key issues regarding keeping peace and safety that the international community and the United Nations are faced with, » the office of South Korean President Moon Jae-in said in a statement on Wednesday.
« It clearly showed how seriously the United States government views North Korea’s nuclear programme as the president spent an unusual amount of time discussing the issue, » the presidential Blue House’s statement said.
Trump’s speech « reaffirmed that North Korea should be made to realize denuclearisation is the only way to the future through utmost sanctions and pressure », it said.
Moon came to power in May on a platform of more engagement with North Korea. Since Pyongyang’s sixth and largest nuclear test earlier on Sept. 3, however, Moon has said the time is not right for dialogue.
He and Trump plan to meet in New York early on Wednesday U. S. time, Moon’s office said.
« GREAT STRENGTH »
Trump’s most direct military threat to attack North Korea was his latest expression of concern about Pyongyang’s repeated weapons tests.
« The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea, » Trump told the 193-member world body. « Rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself and his regime. »
U. S. ally Japan, which Pyongyang often threatens to destroy, has taken a consistently hard line on North Korea, pushing for increased sanctions and pressure.
« We greatly appreciate President Trump’s approach to changing North Korea’s policy stance, denuclearising the country and calling on the international community, including China and Russia, for their cooperation toward strengthening pressure on North Korea, » Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters.
Suga also welcomed Trump’s reference to a Japanese girl who was kidnapped by North Korean agents in 1977.
The plight of abuctees is a key issue for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has pledged to rescue them while in office, and an emotive one for the Japanese public.
North Korea admitted in 2002 it had kidnapped 13 Japanese in the 1970s and 1980s to train spies. Five of them returned to Japan but Tokyo suspects that hundreds more may have been taken.
STRICT SANCTIONS
North Korea, which has conducted more than 80 missile tests under third-generation leader Kim, says it needs its weapons to protect itself from U. S. aggression. South Korea and the United States are technically still at war with North Korea after the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended with a truce, not a peace treaty.
U. S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, interviewed by Fox News on Tuesday, highlighted Washington’s policy of pressuring North Korea through sanctions.
« We have the strictest sanctions ever put in place. We do believe there are early signs of those having an effect, » he said. « Ultimately, though, we’re going to need the assistance of the neighbours in the region. »
The U. N. Security Council has unanimously imposed nine rounds of sanctions on North Korea since 2006, the latest earlier this month aimed at restricting fuel supplies and cutting off textile exports, a key foreign exchange earner.
The United States has urged China, North Korea’s main ally and trading partner, and Russia to do more to rein in Kim, something Trump appeared to allude to in his speech.
« It is an outrage that some nations would not only trade with such a regime but would arm, supply and financially support a country that imperils the world with nuclear conflict, » Trump told the General Assembly.
China’s Foreign Ministry, asked to respond to Trump’s comments about destroying North Korea if it had to, said U. N. resolutions were clear the Korean peninsula issue should be resolved peacefully through political and diplomatic means.
The resolutions passed by the U. N. Security Council on North Korea reflected the « common will and consensus of the international community » to denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a regular briefing.

Trump's North Korea talk 'counterproductive'

0

With his threats to « totally destroy » North Korea, Donald Trump is playing into Pyongyang’s hands by offering justification for a nuclear weapons programme it insists is for self-defence, analysts say.
With his threats to « totally destroy » North Korea, Donald Trump is playing into Pyongyang’s hands by offering justification for a nuclear weapons programme it insists is for self-defence, analysts say.
The US leader used his maiden speech at the UN General Assembly to deliver a blistering warning to Pyongyang, after it tested its sixth and largest nuclear bomb and responded to new sanctions by launching its longest-ever missile flight over Japan.
Trump said Tuesday that North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un was « on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime ».
If the US is « forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea ».
Far from persuading Kim to give up his drive for nuclear weapons, analysts said Trump’s speech could have the opposite effect.
« With those words, President Trump handed the Kim regime the soundbite of the century, » said Marcus Noland at the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
« It will play on a continuous loop on North Korean national television » as proof that Pyongyang needs an effective deterrent against what it views as American aggression.
Joel Wit, senior fellow at the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University, said despite the bluster, it was far from clear that Washington was ready to pay the human price for a conflict.
But he added Trump was a « wildcard and it’s hard for anyone to figure out when he is serious and when he isn’t ».
The US has 28,500 US troops stationed in the South, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War which ended in a ceasefire rather than a peace treaty.
Aside from the burgeoning nuclear threat, North Korean artillery bristles on the tense frontier, putting nearby Seoul and its millions of inhabitants in the crosshairs of conventional — and chemical — weapons.
Japan and its megacities are also within easy reach of Pyongyang’s missiles.
Any US attack would risk massive retaliation with a potentially catastrophic loss of life.
Earlier this year Trump’s former chief adviser Steve Bannon told The American Prospect: « There’s no military solution, forget it. »
Trump’s comments probably sound to North Korean ears like empty threats, said Wit.
« I suspect they think they are going to prove (Trump) to be a paper tiger, » he told AFP.
– ‘Where is the red line?’ –
But Jeung Young-Tae, director of military studies at Dongyang University in South Korea, said the rising threat from the North meant it was not possible to dismiss Trump’s comments as « empty bluffing ».
« The problem is, where is the red line to trigger a military option? » he said, adding that while conflict was still very unlikely, the North’s continued provocations were making it harder for the US to agree to dialogue.
« Its ICBM and nuclear weapons programmes have become simply too big and too threatening to view as nothing more than a bargaining chip for negotiation. Now the threat is real for many Americans. »
If the purpose of Trump’s apocalyptic language is to bring the North Koreans to the negotiating table, his piecemeal approach to diplomacy is likely to be working against him, said Mira Rapp-Hooper, senior research scholar at the Paul Tsai China Center at Yale Law School.
In the same General Assembly speech, he also threatened to end a meticulously constructed deal with Iran over its weapons programme — a move which makes the US look like an unreliable negotiating partner.
China — the North’s only major ally and trading partner — has tried to cool the hyperbole in an effort to reboot long-stalled talks. But it has faced flak over its apparent reluctance to let the global censure destabilise the Pyongyang regime.
Rapp-Hooper said was unclear whether Trump’s « apocalyptic » language was a strategy to scare Beijing to take a tougher line on its isolated neighbour, or a reflection of his belief in the effectiveness of military action.
« But basically that’s a unholy choice between a real threat of deliberate war and a reckless gamble that risks horrid miscalculation, » she said.

Erneuerbare Energien: Deutschland verfehlt laut Studie EU-Ziel

Hurricane Maria aims at Puerto Rico after slamming Dominica

Puerto Rico faced Wednesday what officials said could be the strongest hurricane to ever hit the U. S. territory as they warned it would decimate the power company’s crumbling…
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) – Puerto Rico faced Wednesday what officials said could be the strongest hurricane to ever hit the U. S. territory as they warned it would decimate the power company’s crumbling infrastructure and force the government to rebuild dozens of communities.
Maria barreled toward the island with 175 mph winds and was expected to make landfall Wednesday midmorning along Puerto Rico’s southeast coast as a Category 5 storm, punishing the island with life-threatening winds for 12 to 24 hours, forecasters said.
« This is going to be an extremely violent phenomenon, » Gov. Ricardo Rossello said. « We have not experienced an event of this magnitude in our modern history. »
The number of power outages spiked as Maria approached, with the storm centered early Wednesday about 70 miles (115 kilometers) southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and moving northwest at 10 mph (17 kph), according to the U. S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Maria ties for the eighth strongest storm in Atlantic history, when measured by wind speed. Coming in second is this year’s Irma, which had 185 mph (300 kph) winds and killed 38 people in the Caribbean and another 36 in the U. S. earlier this month.
Puerto Rico had long been spared from a direct hit by hurricanes that tend to veer north or south of the island. The last Category 4 hurricane landfall in Puerto Rico occurred in 1932, and the strongest storm to ever hit the island was San Felipe in 1928 with winds of 160 mph.
As Maria approached, U. S. President Donald Trump offered his support via Twitter: « Puerto Rico being hit hard by new monster Hurricane. Be careful, our hearts are with you- will be there to help! »
More than 4,400 people were in shelters by late Tuesday, along with 105 pets, Rossello said.
The storm’s center passed near or over St. Croix overnight Tuesday, prompting U. S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp to insist that people remain alert. St. Croix was largely spared the widespread damage caused by Hurricane Irma on the chain’s St. Thomas and St. John islands just two weeks ago. But this time, the island would experience five hours of hurricane force winds, Mapp said.
« For folks in their homes, I really recommend that you not be in any kind of sleepwear, » he said during a brief news conference. « Make sure you have your shoes on. Make sure you have a jacket around. Something for your head in case your roof should breach. … I don’t really recommend you be sleeping from 11 o’clock to 4 (a.m.). … Be aware of what’s going on around you. »
Maria killed one person in the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe when a tree fell on them Tuesday, and two people aboard a boat were reported missing off La Desirade island, just east of Guadeloupe, officials said.
About 40 percent of the island – 80,000 homes – were without power and flooding was reported in several communities.
The storm also blew over the tiny eastern Caribbean island of Dominica late Monday, where Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit sent out a series of dramatic posts on his Facebook page, including that his own roof had blown away.
« The winds are merciless! We shall survive by the grace of God, » Skerrit wrote before communications went down.
The storm knocked out communications for the entire island, leaving anyone outside Dominica struggling to determine the extent of damage, though it was clearly widespread. « The situation is really grave, » Consul General Barbara Dailey said in a telephone interview from New York.
She said she lost contact with the island about 4 a.m. At that point, officials had learned that 70 percent of homes had lost their roofs, including her own.
Flooding was a big concern, given the island’s steep mountains, cut through with rivers that rage even after a heavy rain. Dominica was still recovering from Tropical Storm Erika, which killed 30 people and destroyed more than 370 homes in August 2015.
Forecasters said the storm surge from Maria could raise water levels by 6 to 9 feet (1.8 to 2.7 meters) near the storm’s center. The storm was predicted to bring 10 to 15 inches (25 to 38 centimeters) of rain across the islands, with more in isolated areas.
To the north, Hurricane Jose weakened to a tropical storm Tuesday night. Forecasters said dangerous surf and rip currents were likely to continue along the U. S. East Coast but said the storm was unlikely to make landfall. Big waves caused by Jose swept five people off a coastal jetty in Rhode Island and they were hospitalized after being rescued.
A tropical storm warning was posted for coastal areas in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and tropical storm watches were up for parts of New York’s Long Island and Connecticut.
