Jane Fonda: I ‘live for’ Robert Redford sex scenes

0

“He doesn’ t like sex scenes” but “he’s a great kisser, ” the legendary actress joked about her « Our Souls At Night » co-star.
A playful Jane Fonda and Robert Redford hit the Lido to chat about their new film “Our Souls At Night” which screened for the international press this morning. Directed by “The Lunchbox’s” Ritesh Batra, the romantic pic about a pair of longtime neighbors who find love well past middle age was warmly received here at the Venice Film Festival. There is an official out-of-competition screening is Friday night, when veterans and on-and-off collaborators Fonda and Redford will receive lifetime achievement Golden Lions.
Although her “Our Souls At Night” character Addie doesn’ t come with the Malibu sheen of Fonda’s “Grace & Frankie” vibrator entrepreneur, they do share being older women who are also sexual beings. Still, “Our Souls At Night” — which, like “Grace & Frankie, ” is a Netflix original — is a more quiet meditation on older folks making a new connection; there is carnal knowledge, but it’s a slow build.
The ultimate coupling evidently wasn’ t shot long enough on screen for Fonda’s tastes, however. She goaded director Batra that the sex scenes were cut too soon. And said of Redford, “I live for sex scenes with him.” The pair first worked in the 60s on “The Chase” and “Barefoot In The Park.” She teased, “He doesn’ t like sex scenes” but “he’s a great kisser.”
More seriously, Fonda said she wanted to make this film with Redford because she “wanted to be able to fall in love with him again, ” but also because it’s about hope. “It’s never too late. If you’ re brave and willing to take risks and a leap of faith you can become what you were meant to be even if you’ ve never been that before, ” Fonda said. For that she got a round of applause from a rapt press corps.
Redford said he wanted to produce “Our Souls, ” based on the book by Kent Haruf, as something that would satisfy the older audience. And, he wanted to do another film with Fonda “before I die.”
He said that going back nearly 50 years “things have always been easy, ” between him and the actress. “They just fell into place. There’s a love there, there’s a connection there. It has to do with what your attitude is about work and what is your attitude about life, ” he said.
Both activists, neither Redford nor Fonda got too deep into politics Friday except to note that we need “hope” and in a call to save the planet. Redford: “If we care about future generations, we only have one planet and it’s already been chewed up… We have a responsibility to do whatever we can to preserve what’s left.” Fonda: “That means a lot of changes, especially in our country.”
But overwhelmingly the pair fielded questions about their shared history. Fonda recalled walking down a corridor of Paramount’s Administration Building with Redford in the 60s and noticing “all the secretaries” gasping, “There he is!” Fonda thought then, “Oh my God, this guy is going to become a huge star. It was very, very exciting to be working with him at that early stage.”
That was around the time of “Barefoot In The Park, ” the classic New York-set newlywed comedy based on the Neil Simon play. Said Fonda, “I love the fact that these films booked our careers.”
“Our Souls At Night” starts streaming on Netflix September 29.

The A to Z of Photography: Exposure compensation

0

Exposure compensation allows your to make a picture lighter or darker than the recommended exposure.
The exposure compensation control on your camera will either take the form of a dedicated dial or, in some instances, be tucked away in your camera’s menu – it’ll be marked with a +/- icon. It’s worth familiarising yourself with this setting, as exposure compensation gives you a great deal of flexibility in fine-tuning your exposure.
You’d think that with modern cameras featuring sophisticated metering systems you wouldn’t need to adjust the exposure yourself, but while your camera’s metering system will work out the brightness of the scene correctly in most situations, it’s not infallible.
Being able to make small corrections to the metered exposure allows you to adjust for challenging lighting conditions, so that your images don’t appear too bright or too dark. You might also want to deliberately override what the meter thinks is the correct exposure for creative reasons, making a portrait overly bright for a high-key effect for instance.
There are a number of common photography situations in which you’ll find exposure compensation very useful. High-contrast scenes are perhaps the most common, as these can easily trick your camera’s meter, leading it to assess the scene incorrectly. It’s in such cases that you’ll want to dial in some exposure compensation.
Being able to make small corrections to the metered exposure allows you to adjust for challenging lighting conditions
A plus (+) setting will make your image brighter than the ‘standard’ exposure, while a minus (-) setting makes an image darker, with each movement up or down the scale recorded as a ‘stop’, or an increment thereof. A full stop adjustment will double or halve the exposure, but most cameras offer intermediate ‘half-stop’ or ‘third-stop’ increments for more subtle adjustment.
Other scenarios that could confuse your camera’s meter include photographing someone standing indoors in front of a window. This is because the daylight behind your subject can fool the meter into thinking the overall scene is brighter than it actually is and underexpose it, turning your figure into a dark silhouette.
You can correct for this by dialling in some positive exposure compensation. How much will depend on the scene, but in some instances it may require 2-3 stops to get the exposure right.
Exposure compensation is only available if you’re shooting in your camera’s program, aperture priority or shutter priority modes.
In aperture priority mode, if you adjust the exposure compensation you’ll be adjusting the shutter speed. One full stop of negative compensation will double the shutter speed, while a full stop of positive compensation will halve the shutter speed. The aperture remains the same, so a faster shutter speed gives you darker shots by allowing less light to fall on the sensor.
Conversely, a slower shutter speed produces lighter shots by allowing the sensor to ‘see’ more light. Be careful, though, not to reduce the shutter speed so much that it’s too slow to capture sharp shots when you’re shooting handheld.
If you’re shooting in shutter priority mode and you apply exposure compensation, you’ll be adjusting your camera’s aperture to make it wider or narrower.
Now the shutter speed will remain constant, so a narrower aperture will result in darker shots because less light will fall on the sensor in a given time, whereas a wider aperture will produce brighter shots because you’ll be letting in more light during a given time.
When you’re using exposure compensation to adjust the aperture in shutter priority mode, you’ll need to bear in mind that you’ll also be adjusting the depth of field, so more or less of your scene will be in focus.

After Katrina, dozens of countries offered help; after Harvey, not so much

0

Is it a Trump backlash, or recognition that U. S. didn’t use much of the Katrina aid?
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, more than 150 countries offered volunteers, supplies and cash to the United States. Among the donors:
After Harvey? Not crickets exactly, but close. Few countries have publicly offered aid.
The European Union sent satellites. Mexico offered « help and coordination » to Harvey-ravaged Texas, though the statement didn’t go into specifics. Canadians are shipping supplies like baby bottles, formula and bath towels, and Taiwan reportedly offered $800,000. Venezuela promised $5 million, but it’s unclear whether the U. S. will accept that funding.
At a White House briefing, spokesman Thomas Bossert said Mexican and Canadian leaders have called the president but that they didn’t discuss how those countries might help. « The president didn’t get into the specifics, and neither did the heads of state calling. So I think their primary purpose was to express and extend their prayers and their thoughts and their condolences to those that lost their lives,  » he said.
Bossert also said the White House would turn over to FEMA and the State Department any « actual concrete » offers. FEMA did not return a request for comment. State directed questions to FEMA.
It’s possible that more offers of aid are forthcoming, and that countries are simply waiting to see how things play out. But Markos Kounalakis, a professor at Central European University, has a different theory about what’s going on.
« Maybe a distracted State Department experiencing attrition is unable to process foreign offers and aid. But it might also be that Trump actively alienates American friends and allies, boasts he is cutting U. S. aid and makes clear that America First translates into an aid policy of every nation for itself,  » he wrote in the Miami Herald. « Countries seeking political payback, or simply eager to make a point, by sitting silent is a conceivable, if cruel, reaction to a White House that has been deliberately self-centered and dangerously provocative. »
There’s another possibility. The United States struggled to make use of the foreign aid donated after Katrina. According to a 2011 Heritage Foundation report, just $115 million of the $850 million offered in Katrina relief was used. About $400 million of oil aid sat untouched.
There were other snafus, too. Britain donated 400,000 ready-to-eat meals. But some contained beef, banned at the time because of fears of mad cow disease. So the food sat in a factory in Arkansas.
At one point, the State Department suggested that countries funnel their donations directly to organizations such as the Red Cross, where they’d be put to better use.
At the time, the Bush administration explained things this way. « There is a process of matching needs with expertise and the donations that have been made,  » State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told The Associated Press. Decisions about what to accept are based on need, he said, not politics. Germany’s high-speed pumps, for example, were eagerly accepted. Cuba’s offer of 1,100 doctors, not so much.
But in its review of the Katrina response, the administration said it needed a plan to manage donations and inquiries. « The Department of State, in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security, should review and revise policies, plans and procedures for the management of foreign disaster assistance,  » the report read.
In 2010, the United States had a chance to prove that it had learned its lesson. That year, the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, creating the largest oil disaster in U. S. history. At least 30 countries reached out to offer aid. Sweden, for example, offered to provide specialized equipment designed to clean up oil spills; its offer went unanswered.
Eventually, the Obama administration took some countries up on their offers. Mexico sent skimmers., and the Dutch offered machines that attached to ships to suck up oil. But the U. S. government largely relied on BP to decide what it needed. Even Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was frustrated by the administration’s response to aid offers.
« The U. S. remains ill-prepared to accept offers of foreign aid and put them to use in a way that will save lives and property,  » the Heritage Foundation report found. « U. S. officials are taking inadequate advantage of the assets available from the international community. »

Sonos Smart Speaker Latest Rumours: Release Date & Features

0

Sonos is tipped to be announcing a smart speaker to rival Google Home and Amazon Echo in a special event on 4 October. Here’s what we know so far about the Sonos S13 features and launch date.
Sonos might be coming late to the smart speaker party, but it appears to be coming in style. Rather than have us argue about whether it should have included Amazon Alexa, the Google Assistant or Microsoft Cortana, a document filed at the FCC suggests the upcoming speaker will support multiple virtual assistants. And that is music to our ears.
Codenamed S13, the Sonos Smart Speaker will more than likely please our ears for other reasons, too. While Amazon Echo and Google Home major on value, Sonos is more likely to compete with rivals such as Sony’s LF-S50G and Apple’s HomePod with better audio quality than those cheaper devices.
The FCC documents suggest it will have integrated voice control functionality and far-field mics, which comes as no surprise. There’s also an image of a new UI, which reveals a microphone icon along with a play/pause control.
According to the event invitation, the speaker will be unveiled in a press event in New York City on 4 October 2017. We presume it will go on sale shortly after.
We’ ll update this article when we know more.

Dell Family Pledges $36M To Texas Flood Relief; Michael and Susan Dell: 'This Is Our Home' – Page: 1

‘This Is Our Home: ‘ Michael and Susan Dell Pledge $36M To Texas Flood Relief
Dell Technologies Founder, Chairman and CEO Michael Dell and his wife Susan have pledged $36 million of their foundation’s money to relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, which destroyed Houston, Texas, and several surrounding communities.
The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation announced the creation of the Rebuild Texas Fund today. The fund’s goal is to raise more than $100 million in charitable donations aimed at immediate relief efforts, as well as long-term recovery and rebuilding.
« This disaster is personal to everyone who has roots in Texas,  » the Dells said in a letter posted to the foundation’s web site. « Both of us were born and raised in Texas, and the street Michael grew up on in Houston is under water now. »

“This is our home. And we know that it will take all of us working together, over the long term, to rebuild our Texas communities, ” the CEO said in a statement. « As we announce the launch of the Rebuild Texas Fund, we know it is imperative to rally support from companies, community leaders and individuals to work alongside state and federal officials to provide an additional source of funding and ideas for recovery and rebuilding.”
Several large corporations have pledged support for relief and recovery efforts in the days since the tropical storm following Hurricane Harvey dumped more than four feet of rain – an estimated 11 trillion gallons – on southeastern Texas. Verizon, for example, pledged $10 million and Toyota $3 million, but the Dells’ commitment is so far the largest.
The foundation has given $18 million – half its total commitment – to launch the Rebuild Texas Fund. It intends to give the rest by $1 for every $2 donated by others. The matching campaign will continue through 12 a.m. Monday with an eye toward surpassing its $100 million goal.
The foundation said the fund would focus on health, housing, schools, childcare, workforce, transportation and providing capital for rebuilding small businesses.
Dell started his namesake company in his dorm room at the University of Texas in the late 1980s, and his leadership of the company has made him a billionaire many times over. In recent years he’s taken the company private in a $25 billion buyout, and last year made the largest acquisition in the history of the IT industry buying data storage giant EMC for $58 billion.
The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation was established nearly 20 years ago. It concentrates on education, and helping children and families in Texas.
Houston-area solution providers contacted by CRN this week praised first responders, emphasized their resilience and said the storm, which left widespread destruction in addition to unheard-of levels of flooding, in its wake, is a good reminder of the importance of disaster recovery plans.
Paul Neyman, president of Houston-based solution provider Waypoint Solutions, said the help and support pouring into Texas is inspiring.
« The amount of rain was just incredible, but just as incredible was the sense of community not only here in Houston but from other Texas and Louisiana cities; people arriving with boats, trucks, and supplies to help those most affected,  » Neyman said in an email to CRN. « I think Michael and Susan Dell pledging financial support on top of what these volunteers have started truly demonstrates that in times of need, the goodness we all have shines out to help those around us. »

South Korean fined for branding president North Korean in Wiki bio

0

A South Korean man has reportedly been fined 4 million won (US$3,564) for editing his now-president’s Wikipedia bio to say he was from North Korea.
In February, frontrunner Moon Jae-in was just three months away from securing South Korea’s 2017 presidential election when a 53-year-old man, identified only by his surname ‘Yang,’ reportedly edited the politician’s Wikipedia page to falsely identify him as being North Korean.
Yang made the same changes on another politician’s page, the mayor of Seongnam, Lee Jae-myung, who was also vying for the Democratic Party’s nomination.
The man, a software development company employee, allegedly corrected the misinformation six hours later but, nevertheless, the National Election Commission referred him to the prosecution for investigation.
On Friday, Yang was convicted and given a hefty fine by the Seoul Central District Court, which said he attempted to degrade the social reputation of the politicians and deceive voters into thinking they were pro-North Korea.
When determining the sentence, the court said it also took into account the length of time that the false information was online, Yang’s voluntary correction, and the small number of people whom were likely to actually believe it.
Yang is appealing the the conviction and sentence.

Vor dem TV-Duell: Einen Sieg hat Merkel schon errungen

0
