North West bonanza for Chinese

Smith among starstruck All-Stars

0

NewsHubLOS ANGELES — For Mike Smith , it was running into Hall of Famer Patrick Roy in the elevator. For Wayne Simmonds , it was an impromptu conversation with Larry Robinson. And for Cam Atkinson , it was happily canceling a planned trip to New York City.
And maybe that’s at the crux of why the All-Star weekend remains a welcome part of the NHL schedule as much for the players as the fans who have swarmed to Los Angeles for this weekend’s event.
« It’s still kind of surreal that I’m here, » said Atkinson, the surprise goal-scoring leader of the equally surprising Columbus Blue Jackets. « Just trying to soak it all in.  »
Atkinson, 27, has scored 24 goals this season, three off his career-best, and admitted he was slightly disappointed not to be named to the initial Metropolitan Division All-Star roster. He planned a trip to New York with teammates for this weekend but was happy to rearrange those plans when Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins withdrew with an injury.
Now, he and his extended family are enjoying Los Angeles, and Atkinson was sharing a podium with Sidney Crosby in preparation for Sunday’s 3-on-3 divisional games.
For players such as Atkinson, Simmonds and Smith, the bonus of the NHL’s unveiling of the top 100 players of all time has created an extra layer of appreciation at being involved this weekend.
« Patrick Roy was a huge idol of mine growing up, and [I] press the button to get in the elevator, and sure enough, the doors open and there’s Patrick Roy, » Smith said. « I hadn’t really met him or talked to him very much, so just said ‘Hi’ quickly. It was kind of an awe moment for me.  »
Smith and the rest of his Arizona Coyotes teammates have struggled through a disappointing first half of the season, and being a goaltender at the All-Star Game with the top players in the game playing in an offense-friendly format isn’t likely to be good for his save percentage.
« I’m probably going to need a hug or two after the 3-on-3, » Smith said. « You don’t want to stink out the rink.  »
Smith, who will try to help the Pacific Division to a second straight All-Star Game title after it was the surprise winners a year ago in Nashville — the first year of the new division-on-division, 3-on-3 setup — has four children 5 years of age and younger, and they’re all here in Los Angeles to share in Dad’s big weekend.
« My 5-year-old goes, ‘You’re going to the All-Star Game, Dad?’ ‘Yeah, I actually am, bud,' » Smith said. « He was pretty excited.  »

The NHL All-Star Game — which is Sunday in L. A. — is now a 3-on-3 tourney. But who would be on a real, full All-Star team? Our writers picked their top six based on play so far this season.
Last year at this time, Connor McDavid was recovering from a shoulder injury and missed all the John Scott fun. This year, he’s a captain and stoked to be heading to his first All-Star Game.
As he heads to Los Angeles for the All-Star Game, Philadelphia Flyers scorer Wayne Simmonds is careful to remember where he came from and who helped him get to where he is today.
For Simmonds, being at the All-Star Game is an unexpected thrill, but to be at the game in Los Angeles, well, that’s something else entirely for Simmonds, 28, who was drafted 61st overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 2007.
« I think it’s kind of come full circle, » the Philadelphia Flyers winger said. « You come in and you put all your work in, just to hope to make the NHL. You don’t really think about being an All-Star, and nine years in it just happens. I’m just trying to do my thing. I’m just happy that the people realize the hard work and effort that I’ve put into this.  »
As for worrying about how he’ll perform alongside guys like Crosby or Alex Ovechkin — and for Wayne Gretzky, who will coach the Metropolitan Division in place of John Tortorella — well, Simmonds is trying not to overthink it.
« Generally when I think about things like that, I do stupid things, and I’d probably end up on my face, » Simmonds said with a laugh. « I get a little bit too excited. I’m just trying to take everything in, meet as many people as possible.  »
Like Hall of Fame defenseman and former Kings head coach Robinson.
« Larry Robinson comes by me, and he just starts talking to me out of nowhere, and I’m just like, kind of did a double take, » Simmonds said.
And maybe that’s the story of a weekend like this, the fact that the All-Stars can be just as starstruck as the fans who will flock to Staples Center Sunday afternoon.

Alleged U. S. raid in Yemen kills 30 Qaeda members, civilians: officials

0

NewsHubResidents and officials as well as al Qaeda itself said the attack was carried out by the United States, which did not immediately acknowledge the operation.
The gunbattle in the rural Yakla district of al-Bayda province killed a senior leader in Yemen’s al Qaeda branch, Abdulraoof al-Dhahab, along with other militants, the local witnesses said.
Medics at the scene said 30 people were killed, including 10 women and three children.
If confirmed, the raid would be the first in the country by the American military since Yemen descended into civil war nearly two years ago. It would also be the first such operation during Donald Trump’s presidency.
In a message on its official Telegram account, al Qaeda mourned al-Dhahab as a « holy warrior » and other slain militants, without specifying how many of its fighters were killed.
« The operation began at dawn when a drone bombed the home of Abdulraoof al-Dhahab and then helicopters flew up and unloaded paratroopers at his house and killed everyone inside, » one resident said, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
« Next, the gunmen opened fire at the U. S. soldiers who left the area, and the helicopters bombed the gunmen and a number of homes and led to a large number of casualties.  »
A Yemeni security officer and a local official corroborated that account. Fahd, a local resident who asked that only his first name be used, said several bodies remained under debris and that houses and the local mosque were damaged in the attack.
U. S. special forces attempted to rescue an American and a South African hostage held by al Qaeda in another part of the country in December 2014. The captives were killed in the subsequent firefight.
The United States conducted dozens of drone strikes in Yemen throughout Barack Obama’s presidency to combat al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, regarded as one of the global militant group’s most dangerous branches.
The local al Qaeda unit organised the Charlie Hebdo magazine attack in Paris in 2015 and has repeatedly tried to down U. S. airliners.

Can't delete video

NewsHubI don’t believe it was ‘in’ that folder – merely connected by some esoteric route from some other location. You need to find the folder that it is actually ‘in’…possibly using search on C: drive. The real location for the file is the question. This may help: http://www.gcflearnfree.org/windows7/finding-your-files-with-search-and-libraries/full/ I wasn’t intending to have you remove the ‘Public Videos’ folder – but to get an understanding of how these folders are structured and how they work. (I hate the lousy things – but my use of folders is influenced by many years using CP/M).

Japan's Watanabe sets world record in 200-meter breaststroke

NewsHubJapan teenager Ippei Watanabe set a world record in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2 minutes, 06.67 seconds.
The 19-year-old university student improved on the previous mark of 2:07.01 set by compatriot Akihiro Yamaguchi in 2012. Watanabe set the record time in the final of the 200 breaststroke at the Tokyo metropolitan championships on Sunday.
« I’m very surprised, I didn’t think I could break a world record, » Watanabe said. « I want to become a swimmer who can keep breaking records.  »
Watanabe competed in the men’s 100-meter breaststroke at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics but didn’t qualify for the final. He also broke the Olympic record for the men’s 200-meter breaststroke during the semifinal in Rio before finishing sixth in the final.
Watanabe won the 200 breaststroke gold medal at the 2014 Youth Olympics. He qualified for the Rio Games by finishing runner-up in the 200 breaststroke final with a time of 2:09.45 at the Japan national championships in 2016.

Abe, Trump agree to hold summit on Feb. 10, affirm importance of alliance

0

NewsHubJapanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and U. S. President Donald Trump agreed during a telephone conversation Saturday to hold face-to-face talks on Feb. 10 and affirmed the importance of bilateral ties, the Japanese and U. S. governments said.
The leaders “affirmed in our phone conversation the importance of the Japan-U. S. alliance in economic and security challenges,” Abe told reporters after the call.
And Trump “affirmed the ironclad U. S. commitment to ensuring the security of Japan,” the White House press office said.
The talks on Feb. 10 in Washington will be the first meeting between the Japanese and American leaders since Trump took office. The two held unofficial talks in New York last November shortly after Trump’s U. S. presidential election victory.
“I want us to have a frank exchange of views on the economy and security in our meeting,” Abe told reporters after speaking with Trump on Saturday for 42 minutes.
A Japanese government official quoted Abe as telling Trump that he “hopes the United States will become a greater country through (your) leadership,” adding Japan wants to “fulfill our role as your ally.”
Trump told Abe the United States considers Japan an extremely important partner, and feels the alliance between the countries is of high importance, the official said.
The two leaders also committed to deepening the bilateral trade and investment relationship, according to the White House.
During the call, Abe explained to Trump the contributions of Japanese automakers to the U. S. economy, the official said without elaborating, while another government source said Trump asked Abe to urge Japanese companies to create more jobs in the United States.
Since his inauguration, Trump has accused Japan of conducting trade practices in the automobile sector that are “not fair” to U. S. companies. Trump administration threats to impose a 20 percent tariff on various products made in Mexico and shipped to the United States could also adversely affect Japanese automobile and auto parts makers with plants there.
After Trump criticized Toyota Motor Corp. this month for building a second vehicle assembly plant in Mexico, Japan’s biggest automaker quickly announced it would invest $10 billion in its U. S. operations over the next five years.
Trump and Abe did not specifically discuss the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, from which Trump withdrew the United States through an executive order this past week, according to a Japanese official.
Trump has said he favors bilateral deals over the TPP, which he called a “disaster” for the United States, while Abe has hailed both the TPP’s promised economic benefits and strategic importance in setting a fair standard for regional trade. China is not a signatory to the TPP.
The leaders also did not specifically discuss the possibility of negotiating a bilateral trade deal, the official said.
Abe indicated in the Diet last week that Japan could pursue a free trade agreement or economic partnership agreement with the United States while still promoting the TPP.
While noting that Abe and Trump have “different approaches” on trade, the Japanese official said the two leaders will have a frank discussion about trade when they meet next month.
The leaders also discussed matters related to the security situation in East Asia, as well as U. S. Defense Secretary James Mattis’ trip to Japan, the Japanese official said. Mattis will visit Japan on Feb. 3 and 4 for talks with Defense Minister Tomomi Inada following a stop in South Korea.
The White House quoted the leaders as saying they will “consult and cooperate” on the threat posed by North Korea.

Granny prostitutes reflect South Korea's problem of elderly poverty

0

NewsHubSOUTH KOREA – It’s 10.30am and Madam Park (not her real name) is out prowling the streets of central Jongo district, Seoul, waiting to make a quick sale.
This 78-year-old targets grey-haired men, in practising the world’s oldest profession.
At Seoul’s heart, next to the busy business district, is a street where sex is for sale by women old enough to be grandmothers. These so-called ‘Bacchus ladies’ – named after a popular energy drink – are the subject of an investigation by Channel NewsAsia’s Get Rea! documentary on South Korea’s elderly poor, which premieres on Jan 31.
At her age, Mdm Park should be at home, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Instead, she stands on the streets for at least 6 hours a day, waiting for customers.
“In order to survive, I just close my eyes and get it over with,” she said in Korean. “In one day, if there is good luck, we meet three to four men and receive about 100,000 won (S$120).”
She does this so that she can afford the US$250 (S$350) worth of arthritis medicine a month. Her arthritis is so severe that she can barely walk.
When Channel NewsAsia approached her on the street, she said: “You came to play? To meet someone? The room fee is US$10. The fee for the woman is US$30.”
Mdm Park said that she married when she was 19. When she was in her late 20s, her husband gambled away the family home and left her alone to raise four children.
She was working as a kitchen helper and couldn’t afford to send them to school. Today they don’t earn enough to support her, and she claims that they do not care about her. She currently lives with her relatives in a small house and they have barely enough to live by.
Mdm Park said that her knees gave way when she was in her early 70s and she couldn’t find a job. Desperate for food and medication, she became a Bacchus lady.
“Even if I am going to die, I need the medicine. The day after next, I will go to the hospital and get an injection for the bones. It is so painful,” she said.
Prostitution is illegal in South Korea and Mdm Park said that she has been caught and fined several times by the police. However, desperate times calls for desperate measures.
“It is embarrassing. I am embarrassed because I am old,” she said. Aside from the 82-year-old grandmother who is the street’s oldest sex-worker, “I am the next oldest. And next is 60-plus years old. There is no one below 50. All of them have grandchildren,” she said.
South Korea has one of the world’s fastest ageing populations and nearly half of its elderly live in poverty.
Its pension and welfare systems for the elderly lag behind other developed countries; nearly half of South Koreans aged 65 and older live on less than half the national median income.
Professor Lee Ho-Sun, from the Korea Soongsil Cyber University in Seoul, who has been studying these ‘Bacchus ladies’ for years, said that most only started selling sex later in life.
She said that between 2013 and 2014, the number of ‘Bacchus ladies’ peaked at about 300 to 400 in the Jongno neighbourhood alone.
“I cannot tell when they (Bacchus ladies) started but most of them were neglected during the currency crisis in 1997. Families could not really support their parents as before. So, the senior citizens became homeless and… since they do not have much skills, all they could do was become a prostitute,” she said.
She described the basic pension in South Korea – about 200,000 won a month – as insufficient.
Some of the elderly are unwilling to burden their children with their financial difficulties. Others were left behind in the countryside while their children moved to the cities to seek employment and education.
Dr Lee said: “Times are changing – in the past, it was enough to get by on one person’s income. Now even a dual income isn’t sufficient. Children are not in the position to take care of their parents. The elderly problem in South Korea is very shameful.
“Unless the young adult’s problems are solved, we cannot solve the elderly’s problems.”
