Archie Manning weighs in on Giants’ QB mess, Eli’s future

Even though Eli Manning is expected to start Sunday at MetLife Stadium against the Cowboys — playing for the first time since his controversial benching last weekend, and the subsequent firings of coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese — the quarterback’s role for the rest of the season remains unclear.
The future is even more uncertain.
Will Eli want to stay with the only team he’s every known? Does the soon-to-be 37-year-old want to join a championship contender in the final chapter of his career, like his brother, Peyton?
His father, Archie Manning, doesn’t know. And Eli doesn’t, either, apparently.
“I don’t think he has formed any opinion about next year,” Archie said Tuesday in Manhattan, prior to watching Peyton join him in the College Football Hall of Fame. “Eli was maybe just a little heartbroken [about being benched], but he wasn’t mad at anybody. He certainly isn’t making any plans for next year. You can’t do that. We’ve got games left.
“I know this, and I’ve just briefly visited with him, he doesn’t have some dead set plan for next year. You can’t. There’s too many unknown things out there, so why make a plan right now when there’s so many decisions to be made? Just finish, do your job the next four weeks and everything will shake out.”
Despite the poorly handled plan that sent Eli to the sideline for the first time since he was a rookie — in Sunday’s loss at Oakland — and the disastrous results from a team with Super Bowl aspirations, Archie didn’t agree with ownership’s decision to terminate McAdoo and Reese.
With only one team in the NFL holding a worse record than the Giants (2-10), the team’s new front office will be in position to draft a franchise quarterback in the beginning of the first round for the first time since acquiring Manning, the No. 1 pick, at the 2004 Draft.
Should the Giants select USC’s Sam Darnold or UCLA’s Josh Rosen, Archie said it wouldn’t effect whether Eli would want to stay with the team.
“I know Eli loves New York,” Archie said. “I know he loves playing for the Giants. He knows he’s 37. He knows what his ability is, what he thinks it is, and there’s just no sense in forming some dead solid plan for next year when he doesn’t know what his options are gonna be.
“I don’t think any of his thoughts are on that right now. It’s hard out there every Sunday. I think his focus is just trying to play a game Sunday.”
After compiling the second-longest consecutive games played streak in NFL history (210), Eli also knows he could be benched again soon, so the Giants can evaluate third-round rookie Davis Webb, who has yet to see a snap this season.
“He understands they’ve got a young guy there they need to see,” Archie said. “Eli’s a team guy and he’ll do what the Giants ask him to do.”

Apple Pay Cash is officially available for all iPhone users, thanks to iOS update

0

Apple released Apple Pay Cash in the iOS 11.2. The new feature allows iPhone users to send and receive payments through iMessage.
After iPhone users experienced repeated crashes to their devices, Apple released iOS 11.2 with a fix for the bug. Included within the update was Apple Pay Cash, but the feature wasn’t activated for most users. As of Tuesday, the new feature that allows you to send and receive payments through iMessage is officially available for all iPhone users.
Following the release of Apple Pay Cash, Discover announced its official partnership with Apple. Transactions made with the payment service are facilitated specifically through the Discover Network.
Apple joins a host of other services including Venmo, Zelle, PayPal, and Google Wallet in the peer-to-peer payment industry. It has also partnered with prepaid debit giant Green Dot to offer free payments between iPhone users. Even though Apple is coming late to the game with Apple Pay Cash, the company is trying to make the product a standout in terms of convenience and ease of use.
While Apple Pay Cash joins a number of other payment services, there are several big differences that make the service unique. The biggest is that the service is only available on the iPhone. Users on iPhones who want to make payments to Android users will have to use an alternate service to process peer-to-peer payments.
One of the most interesting features of Apple Pay Cash is the ability to send and receive funds in real time. While Zelle began offering almost instant transfers earlier this year, it involves a lengthy verification process with your bank upon your first use. Apple chose to go an alternate route, using the credit or debit card in your Apple Wallet to fund transfers.
While Apple Pay Cash does allow for immediate availability of funds at any location where Apple Pay is accepted, transferring funds to your bank account involves a little more legwork. You’ll have to add your banking information to Wallet when you begin using the service. Once your bank is verified, you can transfer funds to your bank account, which will take two to three days. If you’re looking to have funds deposited into your bank on the same day, Zelle still seems to be the best option.
Update: Apple Pay Cash is officially available on iOS 11.2

22 Celebrities Who Starred In Christmas Made-For-TV Movies That You Forgot About

Appearing in a made for TV Christmas movie is almost a rite of passage for most actors. Thus, it likely goes without saying that the celebrities in made for TV Christmas movies aren’t just obscure names that only a true thespian fan would know; some A-listers can be found in these classic holiday films as well.
That can be kind of a bummer, though, since TV movies are fewer and far between now that people opt for streaming sites like Netflix and HBO Go. Luckily, you can find plenty of Hallmark Channel and Lifetime made-for-TV Christmas movies on Netflix. Or you could always go visit your grandma and marathon some old Christmas movies with her on actual Hallmark Channel.
No matter how you get your hands on these movies, you’re not alone in your urge to watch them. And that’s because, corny as they may be, the Christmas movies that air on TV capture everything that anyone could ask for from the holiday seasons. Comfort. Joy. Celebrities you know from other things who are being reimagined in a brand new, holiday context. Even if you hate the movies themselves, you have to appreciate what these celebrities managed to do with the material.
Lopez’s abs are a holiday treat that nobody saw coming.
Did you ever think you would see George Costanza in a Christmas movie? Well, here is your chance.
Chenoweth plays a workaholic, which, as everyone knows, doesn’t bode well with holidays.
This Lifetime movie will take you back to the ’60s when « being defiant » led to some major — or a « manger », if you will — punishments.
This Hallmark Channel classic is a surprisingly religious role for NPH. Oh, and Rob Lowe stars in this movie as well.
This 2006 film has some other familiar faces, including Eric Mabius and George Buza, who plays Santa in a lot of made for TV Christmas movies.
This actually isn’t the Mean Girls star’s only Christmas movie; she stars in seven Hallmark Channel Christmas movies, in fact. As it turns out, the Jingle Bell Rock dance had a lasting effect on the actress.
This 1999 film shows McEntire in the period piece you never knew you needed.
Also starring Kathy Baker and Mae Whitman, this Hallmark movie is stacked with celebs.
Gilbert plays a single mother who falls in love around the holidays. Yes, it’s sappy, but isn’t that the whole point?
Rob Lowe’s role in this one couldn’t be more different from his role in Parks and Recreation.
Parton always has the voice of an angel, but, in this movie, she is an angel.
Fox plays Lucy, the owner of the Candy Cane Inn that Santa’s daughter visits when she leaves the North Pole for L.A.
While When Harry Met Sally may address Christmas, it’s not necessarily a Christmas movie. Thus, fans of Fisher should turn to this Hallmark movie for a very Carrie Christmas.
While the plot of this Christmas movie raises a few questions — like why is working at a department store so dramatic? — the most important thing is that Ashanti is in it, and she can do no wrong.
Appleby stars as Kristin, who travels back to Christmas Eve, 1996, to fix her past.
Parker plays the sick wife of a man who takes a Christmas decorating competition very seriously and, in doing so, drives Oteri’s character crazy. There’s no time like the holidays to annoy your neighbors
Now that you know all of these movies exist, you’d better start your own TV-movie marathon so you can watch them all before Christmas.

“I am so proud”: Mueller deputy congratulated Sally Yates after she was fired for refusing to enforce Trump’s travel ban

0

« And in awe. »
Another smoking gun of bias on Team Mueller after Peter Strzok was dismissed from the Russiagate probe for sending anti-Trump texts?
The substantive part of Andrew Weissmann’s email to Yates is just 11 words long.
Judicial Watch today released two productions (335 pages and 44 pages) of Justice Department (DOJ) documents showing strong support by top DOJ officials for former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates’ refusal to enforce President Trump’s Middle East travel ban executive order. In one email, Andrew Weissmann, one of Robert Mueller’s top prosecutors and formerly the Obama-era Chief of the Justice Department’s Criminal Fraud Section, applauds Yates writing: “I am so proud. And in awe. Thank you so much. All my deepest respects.”…
“This is an astonishing and disturbing find. Andrew Weisman, a key prosecutor on Robert Mueller’s team, praised Obama DOJ holdover Sally Yates after she lawlessly thwarted President Trump,” stated Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton. “How much more evidence do we need that the Mueller operation has been irredeemably compromised by anti-Trump partisans? Shut it down.”
Here’s the email, sent by Weissmann on January 30 a few hours after Yates declared as acting AG that she wouldn’t enforce Trump’s new travel ban and was promptly and properly fired for it. Last night Julian Sanchez asked a fair question about those anti-Trump messages sent by Strzok. Are we really to believe that (a) law enforcement personnel don’t have partisan political opinions and (b) that those partisan political opinions are *necessarily* disqualifying in investigations that touch on politics? We’d all hope that a Republican FBI agent investigating a Democratic president would be fair and professional, even if he grumbled about the president’s policies privately. Why don’t Strzok and Weismann get the same benefit of the doubt?
It’s an unhealthy sign of how far we’ve descended into tribalism that people think having a partisan preference automatically calls into doubt one’s ability to do a job impartially.
— Julian Sanchez (@normative) December 5,2017
Lawyer Bradley Moss elaborates:
Not only are civil servants permitted to retain their personal political views while employed by the U. S. government, but they are even permitted by law to express those personal political views. The Hatch Act, passed in 1939, governs concerns about politics permeating the civil servant workplace. The statute only prohibits civil servants from engaging in political activity, which is directed at the promotion of or advocacy against a political party, group or candidate. Strzok allegedly sent text messages to a colleague mocking President Trump when he was still a candidate, something comparable to what countless of millions of Americans—including, no doubt, many GOP members of Congress—did with respect to both major candidates throughout the 2016 election. Unless Strzok was actually urging his colleague, “we must defeat Trump, vote for Hillary” or something along those lines, his commentary – while unwise – was still permitted under federal law. The fact that he was making those remarks at all is why Mueller removed him from the Russian collusion investigation out of an abundance of caution. That should strengthen our confidence in his investigation, not undermine it.
Right, but it wasn’t “people” who were bothered by Strzok’s texts, to borrow a word from Sanchez’s tweets. Mueller was bothered by them. Whether there was actual impropriety or just the appearance of it, he was sufficiently uncomfortable with Strzok’s continued participation under the circumstances to have him dismissed from the probe. And Strzok is no junior agent; he was the deputy head of FBI counterintelligence and an expert on Russia. He wouldn’t have been removed from the investigation lightly. Whatever he said in those texts, mocking or serious, must have given Mueller reason to believe that the project would be tainted in the public’s eye if Strzok wasn’t booted before the texts leaked.
Weissmann’s message to Yates is a tougher call because it doesn’t show broad anti-Trump bias. It suggests strong opposition to Trump’s travel ban, not necessarily to Trump himself. Maybe he and Yates are old friends from the DOJ and he wanted to give her a shot in the arm after she was canned, or maybe he was just impressed by her audaciousness in refusing to enforce a policy which she found unconscionable and unlawful. The real deficiency in him cheerleading for her isn’t “bias” but rather that he seems to have been dazzled by her lame justification for her actions: She didn’t think Trump’s policy was “wise or just” so she wouldn’t go along, and rather than do the proper thing by resigning, she forced Trump to make a partisan martyr of her by firing her. It wasn’t her role as AG to second-guess the wisdom of the president’s policies, particularly after the Office of Legal Counsel had issued an opinion of its lawfulness. But it was good drama for travel-ban opponents. Weissmann certainly seemed to enjoy it.
The question is, how much can we presume about his motives from those 11 words he sent to Yates? We already knew that he leans left, having donated to Democratic PACs in the past. Supporting Yates on the night she was fired by Trump doesn’t prove that he has an anti-Trump vendetta but it does show that he was eager to applaud one of the most ostentatious acts of “resistance” by a government official since Trump took office. Whether he loses his job or not (almost certainly not, as he’s a Mueller sidekick of longstanding), this is another building block for the argument that Mueller’s team is so hopelessly corrupted by liberal partisans that the only proper action is to blow it up entirely. Tom Fitton, the head of Judicial Watch who obtained the Weissmann email under FOIA, has been pounding the table about the Russiagate probe since before Comey was fired. Yesterday he cited the Strzok news as reason for Trump to pardon Flynn; today he’s using the Weissmann email to argue that the probe should be closed. Both sides of the Russiagate investigation are building a case right now. Eventually, if Trump isn’t cleared soon, he’s going to act with pardons or firings or both and the Strzok/Weissmann stuff will be Exhibit A in his defense.

A Senate Republican just donated to Roy Moore’s Democratic opponent

0

« Country over party. »
Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) has apparently thrown his support behind the Democrat facing down the embattled Republican Roy Moore in the Alabama special election next week.
The Republican senator, who’s retiring at the end of his term in 2018, tweeted a picture of a check written out to Democratic candidate Doug Jones’s campaign for $100. On the memo line, Flake wrote “country over party.”
Flake stands alone as the first prominent Republican senator to back the Democrat in the Alabama Senate race, a clear break from his party, which is grappling with how to deal with Moore in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations .
Flake’s fellow Republican senators have distanced themselves from Moore after several women came forward with accusations against him, with some senators urging him to step down.
Moore has refused, leaving Republicans — as they saw it — with few viable options. It was too late to remove Moore’s name from atop the GOP ticket for the December 12 election. Republicans floated running a write-in or trying to postpone the election. Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO), head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said in November that Moore should be expelled if he won — an unprecedented move.
But Republicans mostly struggled over the dilemma of how to avoid having a man accused of sexual abuse serve in the Senate while also protecting what should be a safe GOP seat. None of the solutions Republicans considered to avoid seating Moore in the Senate involved outright endorsing his Democratic opponent.
In one sense, Flake has nothing to lose by endorsing Jones. He’s not running for reelection. But while he claims he didn’t vote for Trump last year, he says he didn’t for Hillary Clinton, either. Nor did he write her a check.
His speech on the Senate floor announcing his retirement gives a clue as to why he went further in this case: “The principles that underlie our politics, the values of our founding, are too vital to our identity and to our survival to allow them to be compromised by the requirements of politics.”

YouTube to hire 10,000 new staff for content curation

YouTube will hire 10,000 new people to monitor and remove unsuitable content
YouTube will hire 10,000 people to monitor and control violent extremism on the popular video streaming platform, along with curbing content that endangers children. In an interview to The Daily Telegraph, Susan Wojcicki, Chief Executive of the Google-owned video-sharing site, said on Monday that “bad actors are exploiting” YouTube to “mislead, manipulate, harass or even harm”.
“We will continue the growth of our teams, with the goal of bringing the total number of people across Google working to address content that might violate our policies to over 10,000 in 2018,” Wojcicki was quoted as saying.
YouTube along with Facebook, Google and Twitter have come under scrutiny over the availability of terrorist material and propaganda on their platforms. British Prime Minister Theresa May has also asked social media platforms to remove terror content after a series of terror-related attacks this year in the country.
“The tech companies have made significant progress on this issue, but we need to go further and faster to reduce the time it takes to reduce terrorist content online,” May said in October.
YouTube last month announced it will remove content on the platform that attempts to pass as being “friendly for kids”.
“While some of these videos may be suitable for adults, others are completely unacceptable, so we are working to remove them from YouTube,” Johanna Wright, Vice President of Product Management, YouTube, wrote in a blog post.
The Google-owned company will apply machine learning technology and automated tools in order to discover potentially exploitive content. YouTube has terminated 50 channels and removed thousands of videos as also advertisements from 5,00,000 exploitive videos under the current set of guidelines. The company will also continue to work with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to report potentially illegal behaviour to law enforcement, said Wright.
Meanwhile, YouTube Kids has announced new measures for parents if they find children watching inappropriate videos at home even by mistake. With over 800 million learning video views per day, YouTube Kids is now live in 37 countries.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google is pulling its popular YouTube video service from Amazon’s Fire TV and Echo Show devices in an escalating feud that has caught consumers in the crossfire.
The decision to block YouTube is retaliation for Amazon’s refusal to sell some Google products that compete with Amazon gadgets. That includes Google’s Chromecast streaming device, an alternative to Fire TV, and an internet-connected speaker called Home, which is trying to catch up to Amazon’s market-leading Echo. Amazon’s high-end Echo Show has a screen that can display video.
“Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and Fire TV,” Google said in a Tuesday statement.
Amazon didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Google is hoping to pressure Amazon into selling Google’s products by taking away access to the world’s most widely watched video service. Unless a truce is reached, YouTube will stop working on Fire TV on Jan. 1. YouTube was supposed to disappear from the Echo Show Tuesday, although Amazon has previously found ways to make unauthorized versions of YouTube available on that device.
The dispute between Amazon and Google mirrors the face-offs that occasionally crop up between pay-TV providers and TV networks when it comes time to re-negotiate their deals.
But in this instance, the two tech heavyweights aren’t fighting over licensing fees. Instead, they are jockeying to position their gadgets and, by extension, their digital services into homes as internet-connected appliances and devices become more deeply ingrained in people’s lives.
The battle also highlights the power that the world’s major technology companies are gaining as they dominate important corners of commerce and communications. As the world’s largest online retailer, Amazon has tremendous sway over what people buy, while the results delivered by Google’s ubiquitous search engine often help determine what people do on and off the web.
Besides withholding Chromecast and the Home speaker from its store, Amazon also has rankled Google by declining to sell an internet-connected thermostat made by Nest, which is owned by Google parent Alphabet Inc. Amazon also doesn’t allow its Prime video streaming service on Chromecast, an omission that Google wants to change.
