North Korea and a New World Order

0

Let us honestly admit it. Despite the blistering rhetoric of President Trump, there are no good options to resolve the North Korean crisis. Even the traditional hawks who do not see any war they do not like this time are of the same opinion.
ANALYSIS/OPINION:
Let us honestly admit it. Despite the blistering rhetoric of President Trump, there are no good options to resolve the North Korean crisis. Even the traditional hawks who do not see any war they do not like this time are of the same opinion.
Moreover, even the hawk-in-chief, Secretary of Defense James Mattis, has said that such a war would be “catastrophic.… A conflict in North Korea… would be probably the worst kind of fighting in most people’s lifetimes.”
The most detailed analysis of all possible scenarios ranging from a “crushing U. S. military strike to eliminate Pyongyang’s arsenals of mass destruction, take out its leadership, and destroy its military” to “removing chairman Kim Jong-Un and his inner circle, most likely by assassination,” is provided by Mark Bowden in The Atlantic. His conclusion: All these options not only will carry huge human and material costs, but their end results will turn both the regional and the global situation from bad to worse.
Gregory Treverton, the former chair of the U. S. National Intelligence Council, agrees that “military options against the North’s nuclear arsenal suffer from two problems: they might not succeed, and Pyongyang has devastating retaliatory options.”
A former FBI agent, Eric O’Neil, who helped to capture the spy Robert Hanssen, adds the danger of North Korea’s advanced abilities in cyberattack operations to disrupt its enemies. He mentions several spectacular operations by the North Korean spy agency, the Reconnaissance General Bureau, including the global WannaCry ransomware attack from earlier this year.
One can continue with similar quotations, but the main question remains: What to do?
The most obvious answer is to follow Mr. Trump ’s pre-election pledges and concentrate on his “America First” agenda. Given the spectacular failures of his predecessors in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen, why not take a pause and, for a change, let the regional powers around North Korea, including China, Russia, Japan and South Korea take the lead?
These countries have enough economic and political resources to reach an acceptable agreement and, due to their geographic location, they have vital rather than hegemonic interests to make a deal.
South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in never concealed his desire for reconciliation and remains committed to opening a dialogue with the North, so why not let him try.
Japan, which during World War II committed heinous crimes against Koreans, can and should provide a solid financial and economic assistance package as a part of this agreement. The Japanese government officially accepted the requirement for monetary compensation to victims of war crimes, as specified by the Potsdam Declaration. South Korea did receive some reparations but so far the North got nothing.
China has the largest clout as it controls about 90 percent of North Korea foreign trade and Russia can offer additional economic incentives which might work much better than threats and insults. For example, Russia’s proposed gas pipelines to South Korea could generate substantial transit fees for the North.
Europeans do not like the war rhetoric at all. French President Emmanuel Macron called for more cooperation with Beijing and Moscow to settle this crisis and newly elected German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that she would be willing to step in if asked. Even Switzerland and Sweden offered their help to mediate.
During his election campaign, Mr. Trump strongly condemned George W. Bush’s and Barack Obama’s military adventures which did not bring too much glory to United States. Instead, they brought huge misery and devastation in the Middle East, the rise of ISIS, tens of thousands of Americans dead and wounded plus trillions of dollars wasted.
So why not make a spectacular turn around and prove your credentials not by starting another war with even more dramatic and devastating results but by building a new world order where other willing powers take part and share the risks to maintain the regional security.
All those who are on Mr. Trump ’s mailing list, including myself, are getting daily appeals from him to help with his “America First” mission which is “being challenged by deep pockets of our government and winning the liberal establishment that is fighting to destroy us from within.”
if Mr. Trump were to implement the aforementioned North Korea scenario, not only his base but the overwhelming majority of the American people would applaud him and assure not only his victory over internal enemies but the creation of a solid foundation for a new and more peaceful world order.
Edward Lozansky is president of the American University in Moscow.

The Latest: US pulls all but emergency staff out of Cuba

0

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the U. S. embassy in Havana will keep only emergency personnel working there until Cuba can ensure the U. S. that its diplomats are safe.
The Latest on the U. S. policy on Cuba (all times local):
12:30 p.m.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the U. S. embassy in Havana will keep only emergency personnel working there until Cuba can ensure the U. S. that its diplomats are safe.
Tillerson says in a statement that the decision to pull out roughly 60 percent of the embassy staff was « to ensure the safety of our personnel. »
He says the U. S. continues to have diplomatic relations with Cuba that advance U. S. interests and national security. Tillerson says the U. S. will continue cooperating with Cuba on the investigation.
The secretary says the U. S. has no reports that private American citizens were affected by the attacks. But he says that because the U. S. doesn’t know the cause or source of the attacks, it can’t advise people on how to protect themselves.
___
12:20 p.m.
The United States has issued an official travel warning that urges American citizens not to visit Cuba.
The State Department’s warning says numerous workers at the U. S. Embassy in Havana have been targeted in « specific attacks. » The warning says attacks occurred in residences and hotels that Americans frequently visit. The State Department says it believes U. S. citizens may be at risk if they visit, even if they aren’t diplomats.
The travel warning says that symptoms experienced by those affected by the attacks include hearing loss, cognitive issues, trouble sleeping, fatigue, headache, dizziness and ear complaints.
The U. S. is also warning citizens that the government will have limited ability to help them if they travel to Cuba. That’s because the U. S. is withdrawing most of its diplomats in Cuba in response to the attacks.
___
9:31 a.m.
Senior U. S. officials say the United States is pulling roughly 60 percent of its staff out of Cuba and warning American travelers not to visit due to « specific attacks » that have harmed U. S. diplomats.
The officials say the U. S. is ordering all nonessential staff in the embassy in Havana to leave, along with all family members. Only « emergency personnel » will remain.
The U. S. is also warning American citizens they could be harmed if they travel to Cuba. A State Department travel warning will note that attacks on diplomats have occurred in hotels.
The officials say the U. S. is halting visa processing in Cuba indefinitely. They say the steps will remain until Cuba can assure the U. S. its diplomats are safe.
The officials weren’t authorized to comment publicly and demanded anonymity.

The entire Amazon Echo lineup explained: Which smart device is right for you?

0

Amazon has just announced a lot of new Echos. Here’s how they differ.
After Amazon’s event earlier this week there will shortly be a formidable amount different versions Amazon Echoes on the market.
In addition to the existing Amazon Echo, Amazon Echo Dot, Amazon Echo Show, and Amazon Echo Look, the ecommerce giant announced a newly redesigned Amazon Echo, a new speaker called the Amazon Echo Plus, and a mini screen-equipped device called the Amazon Echo Spot .
Confused? We don’t blame you.
Here’s our guide to the Amazon Echo lineup as it currently stands, including all the devices that have been announced and are yet to be released. We’ve divided the list into two sections depending on whether they have a screen or not.
In the short term we expect this list to shrink in size as Amazon discontinues its outdated models, but for now these are the smart speakers that are available, or have been announced for the future.
The smart speaker that started it all. The original Amazon Echo was released in 2014 and essentially created an entirely new product category of speaker that you controlled primarily with your voice rather than through a conventional app.
It features just two buttons on the top (one for muting and one for waking Alexa), and the entire top of the device swivels to act as a volume control.
The exterior is made of matt plastic, and there is no 3.5mm audio jack present, and the entire device is 9.25-inches (or 23.5cm) tall.
The new version of the Amazon Echo makes a number of changes to its predecessor. For one thing volume is now controlled with an additional two buttons on the top (much like the existing Echo Dot outlined below), and the matt plastic exterior has been ditched in favor of fabric, wood, and metallic finishes.
In addition, the device has also seen improvements made to its speakers and microphone technology, so it should not only sound better but will also be able to hear your voice more clearly.
Also announced this week was the Amazon Echo Plus, a speaker that’s much more similar in appearance to the original 1st generation Amazon Echo.
Under the hood, however, there have been a number of improvements made. The most significant of these is the addition of a ZigBee-compatible hub.
Zigbee is the connection protocol used by a number of different smart home devices, which usually come with a hub that must be plugged into your router in order to allow them to function.
Having a hub inside the Echo itself means that you no longer need this additional hub plugged into your router. So long as your Echo is connected to your home network then your smart home devices will function.
The second major improvement is the addition of Dolby processing, which should provide a boost to the device’s sound.
The Amazon Echo Dot is a much smaller version of the original Amazon Echo, and is around the size of a hockey puck. There have actually been two generations of the Echo Dot released, with the second ditching the volume dial in favor of two dedicated volume buttons.
The Dot’s size meant that some compromises on sound quality had to be made, resulting in a sound level that’s fairly weak and tinny and unsuitable for playing music. However, an included 3.5mm jack means that it’s perfectly possible to connect the speaker to an external sound system if you want to get your tunes playing.
The Amazon Echo Look is one of the weirder entries in Amazon’s Echo lineup.
Rather than the all-purpose design of the rest of the lineup, the Look is meant more as a fashion-focussed device that Amazon claims can analyse your clothing choices via its camera, and make recommendations accordingly.
If that sounds like something you’d find useful, then the Amazon Echo Look might be the smart device for you, otherwise you’d almost certainly be much better served by one of the other models on this list.
The first Echo device to be equipped with a screen, the Amazon Echo Show is able to show you a wealth of information that would be impossible on a regular Amazon Echo.
A picture is worth a thousand words after all.
As well as displaying visual information, the Show is also capable of playing video content from a variety of sources including, of course, Amazon Prime Video. If you’re after YouTube videos however, then you might be out of luck.
The screen can also stream a video feed from compatible smart cameras, and contains a camera of its own that you can view a live feed of from the Alexa app.
Release Date: December 19 2017 (US), 2018 (UK)
Price: $129.99
The Amazon Echo Spot is a miniature version of the Show. It turns the 7-inch rectangular screen of the show into a 2.5-inch circular screen.
This smaller screen means the device is less useful as a video-watching device (although this is still supported). Instead, you’re more likely to use the small screen to read messages, show virtual clock-faces, or conduct video calls.
Its small size also means that the built-in speaker isn’t as good as the larger Show’s.
Amazon is positioning this as a compact device that you might want to have on a bedside table as opposed to the Show’s countertop-sized form-factor.

San Juan mayor rips federal response to Puerto Rico

0

The leader of Puerto Rico’s capital was outraged with Homeland Security’s response, to say the least.
The mayor of San Juan is still standing up for her constituents over a week after Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico, while the U. S. government largely overlooked its citizens in need.
Appearing on CNN Friday morning, Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz listened to comments made by Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke in which she expressed approval of how the ailing island of 3.47 million has been treated.
« I’m very satisfied. I know it’s a hard storm to recover from but the amount of progress that’s been made, and I really would appreciate any support that we get, » Duke said when asked by reporters at the White House Thursday about her thoughts on the federal response.
« It’s a really good news story in terms of our ability to reach people and the limited number of deaths that have taken place in such a devastating hurricane. »
Hundreds rally in NYC, say Trump’s slow P. R. response is ‘absurd’
The leader of Puerto Rico’s capital was outraged, to say the least.
« Maybe from where she’s standing, it’s a good news story, » Cruz said. « When you’re drinking from a creek, it’s not a good news story. When you don’t have food for a baby, it’s not a good news story. When you have to pull people down from their buildings – I’m sorry, but that really upsets me and frustrates me.
« I would ask her to come down here and visit the towns and then make a statement like that, and frankly it is an irresponsible statement. »
The acting Homeland Security head nor President Trump have yet to visit Puerto Rico, but it was reported Friday that Duke is now traveling there to tour the island.

Trump is expected to visit Tuesday.
« Damnit, this is not a good news story, » Cruz continued. « This is a people-are-dying story. This is a life-or-death story. »

Elon Musk's SpaceX isn't the only company aiming for Mars

0

SpaceX is working on huge rockets to take us further than ever before, but Lockheed Martin has a plan for how astronauts could actually live on Mars.
Fortunately for aspiring Martians, Lockheed Martin has been working on an orbiting Mars Base Camp concept, and it revealed the latest details at the International Astronautical Congress in Australia on Thursday, the same conference where Musk showed off plans for his so-called BFR (short for Big F***ing Rocket).
Mars Base Camp would be built up at the Deep Space Gateway around the moon before being deployed to orbit Mars. At first, the Base Camp would orbit Mars, but it can also carry a surface lander with it. The reusable lander can ferry astronauts to the surface of the Red Planet for stays up to two weeks long for a crew of up to four. It can then return the team to the Mars Base Camp to refuel and prepare for the next mission.
It could also be possible to operate robots on the surface from the Mars Base Camp to perform science operations from the relative safety of Martian orbit.
Lockheed Martin says Base Camp could be used as a place to analyze soil and rock samples from the surface and to pick out ideal landing spots for future missions in the 2030s.
It’s not nearly as ambitious as Musk’s grandiose visions of a Martian metropolis, but it seems a heck of a lot more realistic and achievable. After all, a really big rocket can take you places, but there’s no real point if there’s not a plan for what happens once you’re there.

Sailors and soldiers to recreate World War I baseball game

0

NEWPORT, R. I…
NEWPORT, R. I. (AP) — Modern-day sailors and soldiers are playing baseball by century-old rules to recreate the U. S. Army versus Navy games from World War I.
The U. S. Naval War College is recognizing the centennial of America’s involvement in the war by planning Friday’s game in Newport, Rhode Island.
Organizers say it’s a way to teach people more about the war, mark the anniversary, and have a little fun.
Students will play seven innings in historically accurate, flannel uniforms. Spitballs are allowed.
Before the game, the Rhode Island World War I Centennial Commission will rededicate the field where it’s being played, Cardines Field, in honor of Bernardo Cardines.
Cardines was an Italian immigrant from Newport who fought and died in World War I.
The game is free and open to the public.

Amazon scores with NFL live streaming despite a few hiccups

Amazon has delivered its first Thursday Night Football live streamed game. We look at what worked and what didn’t.

Prime members — the program costs $99 annually for free shipping, streaming video and other perks — can watch on Amazon Fire TV devices, on Amazon.com, and also on the Amazon Prime Video apps.
While a few viewers posted on Twitter about some viewing problems — no audio, video buffering — Amazon, overall, executed a successful kickoff of its NFL season.
« Overall, it was a very good experience for me, » said BTIG analyst Rich Greenfield, who watched using a Fire TV device, Roku, iPhone and iPad. « I saw a little bit of buffering earlier in the game, but I think the overall quality across devices… looked excellent. I even had multiple feeds going at the same time, which is obviously using a ton of bandwidth and it looked great. »
His Amazon feed was buffering when Bears quarterback Mike Glennon fumbled after being sacked by the Packers’ Clay Matthews. « A fumble early in the first quarter is not as important as a fumble in the fourth quarter. I might have felt differently if it was a fumble with a second left, » Greenfield said.
He also noticed a gap of about 29 seconds between the Amazon feed and television feed. « Overall, it was a very good experience, » Greenfield said. « For me, the bigger issue was why the delay? And I was hoping (for, but) I didn’t see any ads that were truly interactive. I’m looking for how does it evolve? »
29 secs ⏱ #SpoilerAlert The time delay we measured between @CBS broadcast of @NFLTNF and @AmazonVideo (tested multiple times) pic.twitter.com/TxvkTDpltZ
Phil Swann, who covers the TV industry on his TVAnswerman.com website, also saw a lot of complaints about the time lag. « But at one point, I noticed (the Amazon NFL feed) on my phone in sync with the DirecTV broadcast. I find that amazing, » he said. « When I checked a little bit later in the second quarter, suddenly there was a time lag and there were fewer complaints (about blurred video). You put two and two together and I wonder if they tucked in a little more of that latency protection and they didn’t worry so much about being in sync with real time to ensure that they would have fewer technical glitches. »
It was just an average night in live streaming. Several glitches, but no system breakdowns. Generally ok, but occasionally infuriating.
His experience watching the Amazon feed « was pretty good. More perfect than not, I would say. I read hundreds of comments online from people, a lot of mixed reaction. People were having audio issues, some people were having login issues and a lot of people saying, ‘This looks good to me. Give me more of it. »
NFL on Amazon Prime fail.. No sound.
This viewer watched early moments of the game on an iPhone at Nationals Park in Washington, D. C. and then attempted to login late in the first half using a Fire TV device at home. Instead, I switched to the Amazon Prime Video app on a Sony PlayStation 4 when I continued to get an error message after updating software on the Fire TV box.
I also saw a lag of about one minute during the second half between the CBS broadcast on Verizon Fios TV and the Prime Video feed.
Amazon had not yet responded to a request for comment on Thursday night’s stream.
Readers, did you have any problems or want to share how well your viewing experience was? Feel free to comment here or tweet at my address below.

The FCC wants Apple to enable the iPhone's non-existent FM radio

In the wake of big storms recently, the National Association of Broadcasters and the FCC has piled the pressure on Apple to enable the FM radio in iPhones so they might be used for emergency broadcasts.
In the wake of big storms recently, the National Association of Broadcasters and the FCC has piled the pressure on Apple to enable the FM radio in iPhones so they might be used for emergency broadcasts.
FCC chairman Ajit Pai went as far as issuing a statement saying that « Apple is the one major phone manufacturer that has resisted » enabling FM chips in its phones. There’s just one problem, as Apple points out. The iPhone simply doesn’t have an FM chip to enable.
A spokesman for the National Association of Broadcasters said: « Broadcasters are providing information on how to evacuate quickly, where flood waters are raging, how to get out of harm’s way if there’s a tornado or a hurricane. The notion that Apple or anyone else would block this type of information is something that we find fairly troubling. »
Pai echoed this sentiment in a statement, saying:
Sadly for both organizations, Apple is not simply being awkward; the company cannot comply with the requests as the iPhone 7 and 8 do not have FM radios. Apple issued a statement explaining this:

Tesla chief Musk's latest idea: Intercity rocket travel

0

Silicon Valley billionaire Elon Musk on Friday outlined ambitious plans for a manned mission to Mars and a rocket capable of carrying passengers from one continent to another on Earth.
ADELAIDE/SYDNEY (Reuters) – Silicon Valley billionaire Elon Musk on Friday outlined ambitious plans for a manned mission to Mars and a rocket capable of carrying passengers from one continent to another on Earth.
SpaceX plans its first trip to the red planet in 2022, carrying only cargo, to be followed by a manned mission in 2024, Musk, who runs the company and electric luxury car company Tesla Inc, said at a conference in Adelaide.
NASA’s first human mission to Mars is expected about a decade later.
Musk, the chief executive and lead designer of Space Exploration Technologies, said SpaceX has shrunk the size of the rocket ship it is developing to go to Mars, aiming to start construction on the first spaceship in the first half of next year.
As for the intercontinental passenger rocket – a concept familiar to science fiction fans – Musk said, “If you build a ship that’s capable of going to Mars, what if you take that same ship and go from one place to another on Earth? We looked at that and the results are quite interesting.”
He then showed the conference audience a video of images of a rocket taking off in New York City and landing in various places around the world, with words on the screen showing flight times of less than an hour between any two cities on opposite sides of the world. A New York-to-Shanghai trip could be done in 39 minutes, for example.
Musk had previously planned to use a suite of space vehicles to support the colonization of Mars, beginning with an unmanned capsule called Red Dragon in 2018, but he said SpaceX is now focused on a single, slimmer and shorter rocket instead.
The rocket would be partially reusable and capable of flight directly from Earth to Mars, could still carry 100 passengers, and could also be used for fast transport on Earth, Musk said.
Musk’s SpaceX is one of several ventures that have said they want to open up space routes to Mars.
Lockheed Martin Corp announced separate plans for a manned Mars journey on Friday, unveiling concept drawings of a “base camp” space station orbiting Mars and landing craft that would carry four astronauts to the planet’s surface.
“We know its cold, it’s pretty inhospitable, so we start with the robots and then we go down with these landers,” Rob Chambers, Lockheed’s director of human space flight strategy, told Australian Broadcasting Corporation in an interview.
Chambers gave no date, but the planned mission would be a joint expedition with NASA, which aims to reach Mars during the 2030s.
Mars is typically 140 million miles (225 million km) from Earth, and landing the first humans there, after what traditionally has been seen as a six- to nine-month journey, is an extremely ambitious goal.
SpaceX, which Musk founded with the aim of colonizing Mars, is one of several private and government-funded ventures vying to put people and cargo on the red planet, and other destinations beyond Earth’s orbit.
Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space venture is also designing a heavy-lift vehicle called New Armstrong that will be capable of Mars transport.
Russia and China are each preparing for manned missions to the moon, and Russia has agreed to work with NASA planning a “deep space gateway” space station in lunar orbit, which would serve as a staging post for future missions.
