Canine movie star Benji is ready for his close-up on Netflix

0

The family film hit of the 1970s and ’80s is out to make a streaming video comeback.
Netflix is hoping to learn some new tricks from an old dog.
The streaming video behemoth has acquired the rights to a new version of the classic family film “Benji,” featuring the canine character that became an unlikely box office sensation in the 1970s and ’80s.
If the movie catches on with Netflix subscribers after it premieres in March, the company has the option to partner on sequels or a TV series, furthering its foray into kids programming.
Streaming services have become a desirable alternative for families that want to have greater control over what their kids watch and keep them away from commercials or racy content.
Netflix also faces more competition for young viewers. The company will soon be up against Walt Disney Co. for streaming customers, and young video consumers will be a key target audience.
Disney plans to have its own direct-to-consumer streaming service in 2019, and will remove its content, including kids-oriented fare, from Netflix. Disney’s deal to acquire the film and TV assets of 21 st Century Fox, announced Thursday, is expected to heavily fortify that effort.
Family and kid-oriented content is a significant piece of Netflix’s business. Peter Csathy, chairman of the tech advisory firm Creatv Media, said 50% of the company’s subscribers watch children’s programming on a regular basis.
The Los Gatos, Calif., company has been snapping up kids properties from a variety of sources, ranging from shows based on toys to the characters of comic publishing house Millarworld. DreamWorks Animation Television will have six new original series premiering on the service in 2018.
“If you are an owner of family-oriented premium content that has any kind of brand or franchise value, you are in a great position right now,” Csathy said. “The war is on and it’s all about amassing the largest army of compelling franchises that you can. They are going to continue to cobble up some properties to build out their own family fare.”
Those market conditions were ideal for The Camp Brand, the company led by original “Benji” creator Joe Camp and his writer-director son Brandon, who have sought to bring their franchise to a new generation.
Benji’s journey into streaming offers a lesson in deal making in the Netflix era.
Joe Camp was a Dallas-based commercial producer and filmmaking neophyte when he wrote, directed and marketed his first “Benji” feature for less than $1 million. The film got nearly $40 million in box-office receipts, putting it in the top 10 for the year in 1974.
Camp was inspired by the animated Disney feature “Lady and the Tramp” to make a live-action movie with a dog that could really act. After a massive search he found one in Higgins, a soulful-eyed mixed breed who was plucked out of a Burbank animal shelter and became a regular on the CBS series “Petticoat Junction” in the 1960s. The pooch had been in retirement before Camp offered a shot at big screen fame.
The original “Benji” is seen from the dog’s point of view (cameras were mounted on skateboards to shoot Higgins at eye level). But Camp’s homespun, G-rated approach to the story of a dog who rescues two children being held for ransom was considered out of step with the times, even in the 1970s.
After “Benji” was turned down by every Hollywood studio, Camp put the movie out himself. He handled his own distribution of the film, opening it market by market across the country, and custom designed an ad campaign for each city. The dog and his trainer Frank Inn traveled to promote the release on local TV and in public appearances. Camp’s wife handled the merchandising, putting Benji on lunchboxes and other products.
Camp stuck to his intimate story telling approach in Benji sequels, two of which were among the top 10 box office films in the years they were released. But his last film, “Benji: Off the Leash,” failed to break through in 2004, as his do-it-yourself approach could not compete with studios that were spending up to $50 million to market and promote kids films.
Hollywood’s obsession with familiar titles led to interest in a Benji reboot, and for the last several years Camp’s son Brandon looked for a partner to do an updated version. But the Camps were not willing to hand over their beloved property to an outfit that would alter their vision.
The reaction Brandon Camp received in meetings was almost the same as what his father heard decades earlier. No one wanted an earnest, low-tech adventure story featuring a shelter dog without superpowers or some snappy interior monologues.
“We were told we had to make it sci-fi, we had to make it animated, we have to make it cool and edgy and sarcastic and we had to put a voiceover so adults will like it too,” Brandon Camp said. “Of course studios completely missed the point. What made Benji work in the first place is that he was an ordinary dog. He couldn’t talk. He definitely wanted to tell human beings that something was amiss but he didn’t have words, so he had to find other means of communicating.”
Brandon Camp ended up with a surprising partner in Jason Blum, the founder of Blumhouse, who was familiar with his father’s track record as a film business maverick. Blum’s company, maker of the hits “Paranormal Activity” and “Get Out,” has specialized in low budget hits that give filmmakers greater control.
While family fare does not exactly fit into the Blumhouse brand, Blum saw Joe Camp as a kindred spirit with the maverick approach he used to make “Benji” a hit. Blum also has backed Crypt TV, the digital video startup in Burbank.
“There were a lot of parallels between the release of ‘Paranormal Activity’ and ‘Benji,’ ” Blum said. “They were weird indie movies. Everyone passed on them and no one believed in them.”
The elder Camp had never heard of Blum and was skeptical when he looked him up on Google and saw his company’s horror titles. He feared that he’d turn the cuddly Benji into Cujo. But Blum won them over with his enthusiasm and a promise to let the Camps make the “Benji” film they wanted to make.
Blumhouse helped finance the film and persuaded the Camps to let him offer it to Netflix instead of doing a theatrical release. Blum had sold a number of films and TV series with the company, all of which were profitable.
The new “Benji” was made for $6 million and Blum shopped it to Netflix. The companies did not disclose the price, but people familiar with the negotiations said Netflix paid more than $10 million for the rights.
Going to Netflix was a more economical option for the producers. If the movie had gone into a theatrical release, it would have needed to gross $20 million before the Camps and Blumhouse would have seen any profit, Blum noted.
“I won’t say that I went into this thinking we would stream,” Brandon Camp said. “I believed in my dad’s model. But all I needed to do is look around at my own kids. I’ve got four of them. They all have a device in their hands and that’s how they are watching content.”
The fact that Benji doesn’t talk actually worked in the Camps’ favor with Netflix, which wants programming that can cross cultural barriers and appeal to its users in the 190 countries where the service is available.
“People all over the world grew up having watched ‘Benji’ with their families,” Scott Stuber, head of original film at Netflix, said in a statement to The Times. “We knew this film will allow our members around the world to keep sharing this story with their families… And who doesn’t love an adorable dog?”

Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) and LG K10 (2018) await a CES 2018 launch

0

There are claims that the Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018), Galaxy A8+ (2018) and LG K10 (2018) will be launched at the CES 2018.
Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) have been circulating in rumors and speculations since the past few weeks. From the previous leaks, there were claims that these smartphones will be announced sometime early next year.
Going by the fresh information from ETNews via GSMArena, it looks like the Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) will be unveiled at the CES 2018 in early January. Also, the report adds that LG won’t trail behind Samsung as it is likely to unveil the K10 (2018) at the tech show.
The Galaxy A8 smartphone duo are likely to feature 18:9 aspect ratio and Infinity Displays with thin bezels similar to what we have seen on the flagship Galaxy S8 smartphones. Also, there are claims that these smartphones will arrive with the Bixby features such as Bixby Home and Bixby Remind at least in Korea. However, the Bixby Voice will not be pre-installed on the devices or there will no Bixby button on them.
On the specs front, the Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) are said to feature 4GB RAM and 64GB storage space. There will be dual cameras at the front comprising of a 16MP primary sensor and an 8MP selfie sensor and the rear camera will be a 16MP snapper. The battery capacity is said to be 3500mAh in the Plus variant. While the Galaxy A8 (2018) is likely to settle for a 5.5-inch panel, the Galaxy A8+ (2018) might boast of a larger 6-inch display.
Both the smartphones are believed to arrive with Samsung Pay, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB Type-C port and support for split-screen and Pop-Up View too. A CES 2018 unveiling is said to be followed by a mid-January release at least in Korea.
When it comes to the LG K10 (2018), the smartphone is claimed to be thinner than its predecessor and arrive with a 5.3-inch FHD 1080p display. The device is believed to have 3GB RAM, 32GB storage space, and a 3000mAh battery. The imaging aspects include a 13MP main camera and a 5MP selfie shooter as well. This smartphone is also believed to be released in Korea by January end.

Are We Going to War With Iran?

0

Because it looks like we’re getting ready to go to war with Iran.
When U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Thursday presented what she claimed was irrefutable evidence that Iran had supplied a missile launched at the Saudi Arabian capital by Houthi rebels in Yemen last month, it was hard not to recall the last time an American diplomat stood before the U. N. with evidence that a rogue Middle Eastern state was engaged in proliferation of dangerous weapons.
As it turned out, then-Secretary of State Colin Powell’s 2003 speech explaining the Bush administration’s rationale for going to war with Iraq was based on lies and fabrications, and of course, Iran says Haley’s evidence is fabricated as well. Iran’s proxy relationship with the Houthis is well-known, but the U. N. itself is not as sure as the U. S. seems to be that the two short-range ballistic missiles fired by the Houthis were Iranian-made, while some experts suspect Saudi Arabia of overstating Iran’s meddling in Yemen, the better to justify its own.
For missiles that (as Haley put it) “might as well have ‘Made in Iran’ stickers on them” to literally fall into Saudi Arabia’s lap is mighty convenient for Saudi Arabia’s efforts to paint Iran as Mideast menace number one. Are we sure we’re not letting ourselves get dragged into an ill-advised Saudi scheme for a decisive confrontation with their regional rival? Haley’s claim that Iran is violating U. N. resolutions via its Yemeni proxy is a good deal more credible than Powell’s yarn about Saddam Hussein buying yellowcake uranium from Niger. Nonetheless, the conspiracy theory that the Saudis made the whole thing up will find an audience in the Middle East’s already-weaponized fake news environment.
Also complicating Haley’s claim that Iranian weapons “are turning up in war zones across the region” — or at least the moral authority of the United States to complain about that — is that our weapons and those of our allies tend to do the same, both intentionally and otherwise. It is a little hypocritical to demagogue against Iran for backing its preferred factions in the Yemeni civil war while Saudi Arabia besieges and bombs that country with Washington’s backing, the weapons the U. S. dumps in Syria and Iraq keep ending up in the hands of extremists, and private Saudi money funds at least as many jihadists across the Middle East as Iran’s Revolutionary Guard does.
But what really makes Haley’s speech reminiscent of Powell’s is that the latter was a crucial step towards war, whereas that the former, well, could be.
With the support of their Cold War allies, Saudi Arabia and Iran have been engaged in a regional cold war of their own for some time, which has had few benefits for either side but has resulted in a tremendous amount of death and suffering throughout the Middle East. Lately, Saudi Arabia and its frenemy Israel have been ramping up their rhetoric on the threat Iran poses to the region, suggesting (but not quite saying) that it might be time to turn this cold war hot. Haley said the U. S. intended to “build a coalition to really push back against Iran”—but is it a coalition of the willing?
On its own, Haley’s presentation might read as an argument for renegotiating the agreement over Iran’s nuclear program or reinforcing international sanctions against the country, but taken with everything that has gone on in the past few months, it is not outside the realm of possibility that the Trump administration is gearing up for a direct military engagement with Iran, with the U. S. serving as a bridge for awkward partners Israel and Saudi Arabia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was an outspoken critic of the Iran deal and the Obama administration’s overall effort at rapprochement with Iran, and has long advocated for an international coalition to deprive Iran of the means of producing a nuclear weapon, by force if necessary. Israeli right-wingers like Naftali Bennett are loudly complaining of Iranian aggression through proxies like Hezbollah and its presence in Syria. Now that ISIS is on the retreat in Iraq, U. S. diplomacy there is shifting toward a new priority: containing Iranian influence. Saudi Arabia has been vying with Iran for influence in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Palestine for many years now, and recently has taken to planting anti-Iran propaganda in publications as prestigious as the Atlantic, along with stunts like having Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri fly to Saudi Arabia to resign his office, citing Iranian threats on his life, then later withdraw his resignation. Even France’s foreign minister says Iran is trying to create an “axis” of influence from its western border to the Mediterranean Sea.
This all sounds a bit like a group of countries laying the groundwork for war with Iran. Compounding the suspicion that a U. S.–Iran conflict is in the cards is that the administration has identified checking Iranian expansionism as a goal of its Middle East policy. President Donald Trump decertified the nuclear deal in October, opening the door for Congress to either fix it, rescind it, or kick the can right back to him. Preoccupied with robbing the poor to pay the rich, Congress chose the third option and let its deadline pass. The ball is now back in Trump’s court, where he may effectively cancel the agreement at any time by re-imposing sanctions. The increasing marginalization of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who has been trying to uphold the agreement, may show which way the wind is blowing.
Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and reaffirm plans to move the U. S. embassy there was also seen as a sign that the regional coalition against Iran has already formed up. Even though critics of the move rightly observed that it would make it more politically challenging for Arab leaders to join an American–Israeli alliance against Iran, the cynical (and unfortunately, probably correct) view is that these leaders will voice outrage at Trump’s provocation but do little else, and will fall in line with U. S. policy priorities when the time comes.
Little wonder, then, that the International Crisis Group is warning of a high risk that the U. S. and Iran come to blows over the Yemen conflict. It’s not entirely clear how the Trump administration would juggle full-scale wars with both Iran and North Korea. Nor can we predict exactly how Russia, other regional actors like Turkey, or the various non-state actors and terrorist groups of the Middle East would respond to a march toward war with Iran. Hell, we don’t even know if the Trump administration is gunning for that outcome, but it sure looks like it.

ARK Aberration Best Base Locations Guide – Best Places to Build, Hidden Bases Locations

0

ARK Aberration Best Base Locations Guide to help you find the best possible locations where you can set up your base in ARK Aberration expansion.
Bases can be a tough animal to beat. Finding the spot for the perfect base in a map can be extremely difficult and chances are that they will continuously raided. With the release of the new Aberration DLC, the new map may be a difficult challenge as you will not know where to build your base.
This ARK Aberration Best Base Locations Guide will tell you where you can build bases which are completely obscured from view. This way you will be able to protect your base as most of the other players will not even be able to find it, let alone raid it.
For more help on ARK Aberration, you can check out our Base Building Guide, Creatures Taming Guide, and Plant Species Z Guide .
Of course, you can figure out some locations for yourself. As you will know if you have spent some time in the game, you can hide your bases behind waterfalls.
In the new Aberration map, you can make yourself a hidden base around (42.2,50.8) coordinates. This base will be a good way to experiment with the new metal cliff platforms as well. This is not very defendable so you need to set up a couple of turrets.
The second location is similar, it is a cliff platform base. You will have already built bases like this before. This base can be built at around (25.6,44.1). You are inside of a tree where you can build the base. However, this area is not that easy to defend. You can, however, find an area inside the tree where your base can be very well hidden.
Now that we have the basic locations out of the way, let’s take a look at some of the better hiding locations for your base.
This location is in (39.4,61.5). You will be on top of the map, right near the ceiling. There is a vast space and the area is very well hidden so you can easily make a base here and grow it out to be huge.
The cliff is not that easy to spot unless you know of its existence and you can easily hide your base in the vast area of the cliff. However, you will need to climb a lot if you need to get to this base, which is a downside.
Another location, which is very easy to defend and very easy to hide. However, the area is quite small which may hinder the growth potential of your base. This base can be found in coordinates (46.9,25.1).
All you need to do is to take a good look around the area and you can see that the location is amazing. Just check a turret on the top and be completely safe from all invaders.
By far the best location for hiding inside of the game can be found in (16.5,29.8). This location is incredibly sneaky and hiding your base inside of it will probably make your base hidden from everyone, except the ones who have read this guide.
The space is not only well hidden but has an extremely large area where you have the chance for endless expansion. Just take a look at the space and see for yourself the perfection which is this hiding place.
This place is good for both tribes and solo players. It is well guarded and the base can only be raided on foot, which makes defending it that much easier.
That is all we have for our ARK Aberration Best Base Locations Guide. Let us know if we missed something using the comments section below!

Lider PO zaapelował do wszystkich partii opozycyjnych m.in. o natychmiastowe zacieśnienie współpracy w parlamencie i poza nim.
Schetyna, apelując m.in. do szefowej Nowoczesnej Katarzyny Lubnauer i
Ryszarda Petru o powołanie wspólnego prezydium klubu PO i N. mówił, że
kolejnym krokiem współpracy dwóch partii mogłoby być powtórzenie
koalicji we wszystkich polskich miastach. Nawiązał do wspólnego
kandydata dwóch partii – Rafała Trzaskowskiego – na prezydenta Warszawy. Zaprośmy też do współpracy naszego sprawdzonego partnera – PSL,
zaprośmy Unię Pracy, Demokratyczną Lewicę, stwórzmy szerokie wspólne
listy wyborcze do sejmików wojewódzkich – mówił.
Schetyna mówił też o protestach ws. reformy sądownictwa, w obronie konstytucji i niezawisłych sądów. Dzisiaj, kiedy partia Kaczyńskiego stworzyła sobie narzędzia
przeprowadzenia masowych fałszerstw wyborczych, dzisiaj musimy wspólnie
stworzyć równie masowy, wielki i zdeterminowany obywatelski ruch obrony
Mamy w Polsce jawne ograniczanie demokracji (…)
kolejne działania i wypowiedzi jej lidera – dodał lider PO.
zakończyć kryzys konstytucyjny, kryzys ustrojowy, jaki pana partia
Kandydatów do zarządu rekomendował lider PO Grzegorz Schetyna. Nie było zgłoszeń z sali. Do zarządu powraca b. liderka świętokrzyskiej PO, posłanka
Marzena Okła-Drewnowicz.
Witczak. Zastępcą Gawłowskiego, odpowiedzialnym za kontakty z
parlamentem ma być posłanka Izabela Katarzyna Mrzygłocka.
Wiceprzewodniczącymi Platformy wybrano ponownie (także z rekomendacji
Schetyny): b. premier Ewę Kopacz, b. wicepremiera Tomasza Siemoniaka,
b. ministra sprawiedliwości Borysa Budkę oraz wicemarszałka Senatu
Bogdana Borusewicza.

Trzej oficerowie w okresie II RP służyli w Marynarce Wojennej.

Biathlon-Star Dahlmeier holt ersten Saisonsieg

0

Viertes Rennen, erstes Sieg: Biathlon-Königin Laura Dahlmeier kommt immer besser in Fahrt.
