Donald Trump and the fish food dump: How early reports got it wrong

0

It was a story that seemed to reinforce stereotypes of President Donald Trump: On a visit to Japan, he was handed a box of food for a ritual feeding of carp, and after doling out a few spoons’ worth, he got impatient and dumped the rest of the box
It was a story that seemed to reinforce stereotypes of President Donald Trump: On a visit to Japan, he was handed a box of food for a ritual feeding of carp, and after doling out a few spoons’ worth, he got impatient and dumped the rest of the box all at once.
Initial reports of the food dump — like this early video from CNN — suggested that Trump acted on his own. This pushed the late-night Twitterverse and blogosphere into a tizzy. The website Jezebel posted a story headlined,  » Big Stupid Baby Dumps Load Of Fish Food On Japanese Koi Pond. »
One problem: Trump didn’t just decide to dump his food on his own. Video shows he was following the lead of his host at the koi pond event, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Here’s a gif and a video (and another video) showing how events actually transpired — first Abe, then Trump.

Several journalists took to Twitter to correct the record as soon as it became clear, including Bloomberg’s Nicholas Wadhams, the Washington Post ’s David Nakamura, and freelance journalist Yashar Ali, who went so far as to delete one of his previous posts and explain why.
Other media tweaks were less forceful.
The Jezebel post had not been updated by the time we found it around noon on Monday. It was later updated at 12:30 p.m., but with this addendum: « Many people have pointed out that Abe also  dumped his fish food  into the pond. This does not change the fact that Trump remains a big,   extremely stupid  baby, though I should also have noted that he is also  racist,  sexist  and  thoroughly   incompetent. Thank you. »
Other reports we viewed around the same time, such as those from CNN, the New York Daily News, and the Telegraph, mentioned that Abe was first to dump his box, but usually did so several paragraphs into the story. A story by the Independent mentions that Abe was the first to dump his box, but the headline gives a different impression:  » US President trumps Abe by upending box of food into Tokyo palace koi carp pond. »
More transparent was the tech-focused website Gizmodo, which posted a full story headlined, « That Viral Photo of President Trump Dumping Fish Food Is Very Misleading. »
The Gizmodo post interpreted the media’s reaction this way: « In the wide world of media mistakes, Koigate is probably somewhere between a spelling error and posting the wrong hyperlink. But you can be sure that we’ll be talking about Koigate for some time as an example of what’s wrong with the media. Because nobody is operating in good faith anymore. The year 2017 and beyond is simply a contest to see who can be outraged over the most minute details of any scandal. All while very real scandals are dismantling American democracy. »
Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway called out journalists on Twitter: « Presumptive negativity; always ready to pounce on @POTUS. Retweet rather than report. #factfree . »

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee coach Butch Jones says quarterback Jarrett Guarantano is feeling “much, much better” and is considered “probable” for the Volunteers’ game Saturday at Missouri.
Jones also said Monday that safety/kick returner Evan Berry and wide receiver Latrell Williams will miss the remainder of the season.
Guarantano had his right ankle heavily taped for the first half of Saturday’s 24-10 victory over Southern Mississippi. He left the game for three snaps in the second quarter and then sat out the entire second half.
Berry played just three games this season because of an unspecified injury. He led all Football Bowl Subdivision players in kickoff return average in 2015.
Williams hasn’t played since the season opener because of an unspecified injury.

Merkel: Jamaika-Sondierung soll am 16. November abgeschlossen sein

0

Salesforce reveals updated app development framework myLightning

0

Allows businesses to ‘easily create customised, branded apps and experiences at scale’
San Francisco: CRM giant Salesforce has announced an update to Salesforce Lightning, its component-based framework for application development.
Called myLightning, the update is said to take the power of Salesforce Lightning to the next level so that businesses can « quickly and easily create customised, branded apps and experiences at scale ». Speaking at dreamforce 2017, Salesforce’s Mike Rosenbaum, EVP, of CRM Apps said: « Two years ago we introduced Salesforce Lightning, [which] was – and still is – one of Salesforce’s biggest initiatives. With myLightning, every application, every portal, every experience that a company builds can now reflect their brand. » myLightning has over 700 new features, such as workspaces, kanban boards and completely revamped reports and dashboards, all focused on increasing productivity. However, there are three new key new tools within myLightning. The first is a Theming and Design System, which allows companies to specify the brand image, colours, page background image and more to ensure that Lightning aligns with their brand.
Then there’s the new App Builder with Dynamic Pages feature, a tool which delivers different experience s to each user depending on the values of that record, enabling companies to customise at scale. « With the new Dynamic Pages, you can now control when a component appears on a record page by adding filter conditions and logic, creating a customised experience without having to add anything to custom components, » Rosenbaum explained.
» For example, a sales leader at a medical device company who wants to prioritise high value deals can easily build a filter that shows a deal priority component on the opportunity page that’s only visible for opportunities worth more than $1 million. »
The third and final new tool within myLightning is Lightning Flow, which now powers Salesforce’s existing flow automation tools called Visual Flow. With Lightning Flow, Salesforce said admins can create guided, visual processes with Lightning Components and easily add them to a record, app, portal and console.
« Lightning Flow is a powerful example of how the Lightning system works together to make our [customers] more productive and marks the beginning of what is going to be a big transformation of Salesforce towards process – cantered applications, » added Rosenbaum. He used the example of Farmers Insurance, one of Salesforce’s customers who uses Lightning Flow to streamline the processing of new property loss claims. « Farmers customers and their agents can report a loss simply by uploading images from any device, he said.  » By streamlining this process, and optimising it for mobile, Farmers reduced the time it takes to report a loss from approximately 12 minutes to 3 minutes. »
The three new myLightning features will work alongside the existing Lightning Bolt tool that was introduced last year and will all be generally available in early 2018 at no additional cost, Salesforce said.

Apple rolls out another beta of iOS 11.2 for developers

0

It hasn’t even been a week since the first beta release of iOS 11.2 for developers, and Apple has already unleashed a second beta to get all the kinks out before it officially launched the update.
Less than a week after releasing the first beta for iOS 11.2 to developers, Apple has pushed out a second beta that fixes a few bugs introduced by the first.
The new build fixes an animation bug for the Calculator that caused some numbers to not be ignored if they were typed in too fast. Animations have been removed from the app to allow quicker calculations without a delay. The build also adds functionality for controlling content for Apple TV. Late last week, Apple released a beta of 11.2 for iPhone X, a move that was sorely needed for those that had purchased the new high-end device, but had 11.2 on their old devices. At the time, the newer betas were not supported by the iPhone X, making it impossible for new users who had been running them to restore their iPhone X devices from an iCloud backup.
It is not known yet when iOS 11.2 will officially be released, as iOS 11.1 was just released at the end of October. That update has shown a rather annoying, but sporadic, autocorrect bug that can prevent some users from typing a lower case  » i, » instead showing up as the letter « a » or a question mark. There is no word from Apple on when a fix will be forthcoming.
Also out today are second betas of macOS 10.13.2 High Sierra, watchOS 4.2, tvOS 11.2, available through the developer download page .

Mugabe's axing of VP Mnangagwa 'not surprising at all'

0

President Robert Mugabe’s firing of his deputy, Emmerson Mnangagwa, is not at all surprising as the vice president had come under extreme pressure over the weekend, a senior researcher at the ISS says.
Harare – President Robert Mugabe ‘s firing of his deputy, Emmerson Mnangagwa, is not at all surprising as the vice president had come under extreme pressure over the weekend, a senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies said on Monday.
In an interview with News24, Derek Matyszak, said: « It’s too soon to know how Mnangagwa’s supporters are going to react. But I think after what happened over the weekend, Mugabe’s move was not at all surprising. »
Mugabe fired his deputy on Monday as tensions between Mnangagwa and Mugabe’s wife Grace to succeed the veteran leader intensified.
Grace declared over the weekend that Mnangagwa should be gone from both the government and Zanu-PF before the party’s extraordinary congress in December.
‘There is a lot of scenarios to consider’
« The firing of Mnangagwa could cause Mugabe and the G40 some discomfort ahead of the party extraordinary congress. But, this all depends on how strong Mnangagwa’s support base is. If his support base is weak, he could end up in political wilderness like his predecessor Joice Mujuru, » said Matyszak.
According to reports two distinct camps had emerged in Zimbabwe’s revolutionary party in recent years as factions sought to outwit each other in the race to succeed the 93-year-old leader.
Mnangagwa was allegedly leading a faction calling itself « Team Lacoste », while another grouping made up of Young Turks, commonly known as Generation 40 (G40) which was allegedly backing the First Lady to succeed her ageing husband, wanted to torpedo Mnangagwa’s presidential ambitions.
« It is unlikely that a coup could happen in the country. Not everyone in the military is backing Mnangagwa. It is, however, possible that his firing can take away a huge chunk of the ruling Zanu-PF supporters. This can definitely work to the advantage of opposition parties, and again, that all depends on the number of his supporters. Some may want to save themselves and apologise. There is a lot of scenarios to consider, » said Matyszak

A Broadcom deal could help fix Qualcomm's problems with Apple

0

Qualcomm and Apple have long been embroiled in a patent lawsuit — each tech company suing the other in a high-priced back-and-forth.
Broadcom ‘s $103 billion bid for rival chipmaker Qualcomm could ease a lengthy war with Apple, analysts said Monday.
Qualcomm and Apple long been embroiled in a patent lawsuit — each tech company suing the other in a high-priced back-and-forth. Apple alleges fraudulent royalty charges, and Qualcomm alleges patent infringement.
« While Qualcomm is pursuing the dispute in the courts in an effort to maximize the value of its IP, an acquirer wouldn’t need to maximize value — an acquirer would only need to settle for a rate that would provide a positive ROI, » Chris Caso of Raymond James Equity Research said in a note.
Apple CEO Tim Cook last week commented on the ongoing battle and reiterated the company’s stance on Qualcomm’s alleged wrongdoing.
« If you back up and look at this, what is happening is that [Korea’s Fair Trade Commission] has found Qualcomm guilty and fined them in the past few weeks, » Cook told CNBC’s Josh Lipton . « The Taiwan justice department has found Qualcomm guilty and fined them. The U. S. FTC sued them and has a suit going on. The EU is investigating them. And so I think it’s pretty clear that there are problems there. »
Broadcomm, for its part, has a pretty cordial relationship with Apple, as one of the smartphone giant’s main component suppliers.
« Broadcom and Apple have a much more cohesive partnership, in contrast to the hostility and lawsuits you have between Qualcomm and Apple, » RBC Capital Markets’ Amit Daryanani told CNBC’s  » Squawk Alley  » Monday. « So Broadcom may logically think, and we think it’s fair, that they could resolve these regulatory litigation issues more easily than Qualcomm is doing right now. »
The soothing effect could extend to the industry at large, according to Anil Doradla of William Blair & Co.
« This could mark a new benign environment, » Doradla told CNBC in the same interview. « Some of these litigation issues have been resolved, [but] they are still a thorn for many. »
