Here's how Google sees you using ARCore

0

There’s a big battle brewing in the tech world, and no, it’s not iPhone 8 vs Google Pixel 2. At least, not directly.
There’s a big battle brewing in the tech world, and no, it’s not iPhone 8 vs Google Pixel 2. At least, not directly.
Rather, augmented reality (AR) is shaping up to be a major area of contention for tech’s top rivals, as Apple’s ARKit and Google’s ARCore are poised to go head-to-head very soon.
On the eve of the iPhone X and iPhone 8 launch and impending release of iOS 11, Google is giving regular folks a closer look at what its AR framework can do.
The search giant today published six experiments cooked up by Daydream Labs, showcasing how AR in mobile Android devices will give users a whole new way to interact with the world around them.
Street View looks to be a big benefactor of ARCore, and one prototype Google revealed gives users an up-close look at The British Museum as well as a panorama perspective of Great Russell Street.
Yet another Street View prototype removes the arrows and let’s you change your view by physically walking. Though you’re still looking through a small phone screen, it feels a bit like you’re peering through a window into another world.
Google also foresees ARCore being used in building design; another prototype shows how architects can overlay a model onto a home under construction to see what the finished design looks like.
Much like Microsoft’s HoloLens, Google also envisions ARCore being used to teach certain skills. To do so, Daydream Labs took another Google experiment in the realm of virtual reality and brought it to AR. Espresso Trainer teaches users the steps to make an espresso, with delicious, highly caffeinated results.
There’s also a prototype similar to ARCore’s predecessor Project Tango in that users can see and interact with fantastical digital renders, with the depth of field adjusting the closer and further away from the object you move.
Finally, Daydream Labs made use of Google’s Visual Positioning Service (VPS) beta and created a prototype where one user can share their location with a friend, and the friend can be guided to them using VPS.
These along with other ARCore creations Google is highlighting give a promising glimpse at the AR capabilities headed to Android phones and tablets. That won’t be for some time, however, as the ARCore software development kit just made it to developers.
In the meantime, Apple is poised to deliver AR to millions of iPhones and iPads when ARKit releases along with iOS 11. The new mobile OS is due to arrive shortly after tomorrow’s iPhone X launch event, likely when the new iPhones go on sale in a week or two.

Norwegen: Konservatives Regierungsbündnis gewinnt Wahl

0

Philips at the recent IFA trade show in Berlin shared details of its latest ultra-wide monitor, the 492P8.
The display consists of an LED-backlit, Samsung-manufactured 49-inch VA panel with a resolution of 3,840 x 1,080 (32: 9 (3.56: 1) aspect ratio, 81.41 PPI) . Refresh rate and response times are unknown at this hour although Philips did share with AnandTech that its new screen sports a brightness rating of up to 600 cd/m² and a contrast of 5,000: 1. It’s also got an 1800R curvature and an sRGB color gamut.
Connectivity options include a single DisplayPort connector, two HDMI ports and a D-Sub connection (plus 3.5mm input and outputs) . There’s also a USB hub with two USB 3.0 ports and a Gigabit Ethernet jack.
Philips’ monitor is wide for sure but I’ m not sure it’s all that great of an offer.
Serious gamers are probably going to look elsewhere for G-SYNC / FreeSync and speedy refresh rates while those eyeballing loads of desktop real estate would likely better be served by using a decent 4K TV as a monitor. With the latter option, you’ d get double the vertical resolution for less money than Philips is asking.
The Philips 492P8 is set to arrive sometime in the second quarter of 2018 priced around $1,075. Unless Philips announces some pretty incredible specs between now and then, I’ d probably keep looking.

U. N. Security Council Approves New North Korea Sanctions: The Two-Way: NPR

0

Facing opposition from China and Russia against even tougher sanctions, the U. S. compromised to win a unanimous resolution.
The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously on Monday to impose a new set of sanctions against North Korea after the United States compromised with Russia and China who opposed an even harder line sought by the Trump administration.
The new sanctions set a cap on crude and refined oil exports to North Korea at 8.5 million barrels per year, which represents a 30 percent reduction, according to U. S. officials. The sale of natural gas will be prohibited and refined petroleum sales will be capped at 2 million barrels annually. The Security Council resolution also bans all North Korea textile exports, worth an average of $760 million over the past three years.
The sanctions also prohibit nations from authorizing new work permits to North Korean citizens around the world. More than 90,000 North Korean workers employed abroad bring the regime about a half billion dollars a year.
But these measures fall short of the stronger sanctions the U. S. called for after the Pyonyang regime detonated its sixth and most powerful nuclear device last week. In response, U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley pressed for a total oil embargo. She also called for direct penalties, such as an asset freeze and global travel ban, against North Korean leader Kim Young Un.
But that proposal was a hard sell to the Russians and Chinese, who hold veto power in the Security Council.
China, North Korea’s top trading partner, is not eager to endorse sanctions that could undermine Pyongyang stability and cause millions of refugees to cross its border. Russia is itself chafing under sanctions imposed by the U. S. and the European Union in response to its annexation of Crimea and military operations in Ukraine.
After Monday’s 15-0 vote on the sanctions compromise, Haley called the package « by far the strongest measures ever imposed on North Korea. »
« Today we are saying the world will never accept a nuclear armed North Korea,  » she said.
But after saying last week that North Korea is  » begging for war,  » Haley told the Security Council, « North Korea has not yet passed the point of no return. »

Brexit law passes hurdle in reprieve for British PM May

0

Britain’s parliament backed a second reading of legislation to sever ties with the European Union early on Tuesday, a reprieve for Prime Minister Theresa May who now faces demands by lawmakers for concessions before it becomes law.
LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s parliament backed a second reading of legislation to sever ties with the European Union early on Tuesday, a reprieve for Prime Minister Theresa May who now faces demands by lawmakers for concessions before it becomes law.
After more than 13 hours of speeches for and against the legislation, which May says is essential for Brexit but critics describe as a Conservative government power grab, lawmakers voted 326 to 290 in favor of moving the EU withdrawal bill, or repeal bill, to the next stage of a lengthy lawmaking process.
Many fell in step with the government which said a vote against the legislation would force Britain into a chaotic exit from the EU, rather than a smooth departure, as the country would lack laws and a regulatory framework to steer the process.
May, weakened by the loss of her majority in a June election, now faces a battle against politicians who want to force amendments to the bill, first in the lower house of parliament and then in Britain’s unelected upper chamber.
“Earlier this morning parliament took a historic decision to back the will of the British people and vote for a bill which gives certainty and clarity ahead of our withdrawal from the European Union, ” May said in a statement.
“Although there is more to do, this decision means we can move on with negotiations with solid foundations and we continue to encourage MPs (lawmakers) from all parts of the UK to work together in support of this vital piece of legislation.”
Her justice minister urged lawmakers to back the bill and signaled that the government would listen to the concerns of lawmakers despite describing some of their criticism as being “exaggerated up to and beyond the point of hyperbole”.
The bill seeks largely to ‘copy and paste’ EU law into British legislation to ensure Britain has functioning laws and the same regulatory framework as the bloc at the moment of Brexit, to offer some reassurance for companies.
But the often impassioned debate in the 650-seat parliament underlined the rifts exposed by last year’s EU referendum, not only in Britain’s main parties, but also in the country.
The opposition Labour Party had called on its lawmakers to vote against the bill if the government failed to make concessions. But seven rebelled, with some saying they had to respect the demands of their pro-Brexit voters.
“This is a deeply disappointing result, ” said Labour’s Brexit spokesman, Keir Starmer. “This bill is an affront to parliamentary democracy and a naked power grab by government ministers … It will make the Brexit process more uncertain, and lead to division and chaos when we need unity and clarity.”
The government has defended the bill by saying it will allow Britain to become “masters of our own laws”, but it also gives ministers wide-ranging powers to amend laws to make them work domestically, often by interchanging the word ‘EU’ for Britain.
But lawmakers, both in Labour and May’s governing Conservative Party, expressed fears the government would make substantial changes to legislation without consulting parliament – a charge the government has denied.
Despite the victory for a government now dependent on the support of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party to secure a working majority, ministers will face attempts by both Conservative and Labour lawmakers to change the bill.
Some want assurances that the government will not misuse its power, others want to make sure the protections of certain workers rights are also written into the bill before allowing it to move to the unelected upper house of parliament.
The process is expected to take months to complete and both houses should agree the final wording before it can be passed.
“Labour will seek to amend and remove the worst aspects from the bill as it passes through parliament, ” Starmer said. “But the flaws are so fundamental it’s hard to see how this bill could ever be made fit for purpose.”

Samsung partners with Sprint for gigabit LTE

0

Samsung and Sprint will continue their real-world trials of Massive MIMO in an attempt to attain gigabit speeds on Sprint’s live LTE network.
Samsung has announced that it will be trialling new network technologies to attain gigabit speeds on US carrier Sprint’s live LTE network this month.
According to a blog post by Alok Shah, Samsung VP of networks strategy for Samsung Electronics America, the two companies will use Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (Massive MIMO) for the tests.
The new trials follow Samsung and Sprint testing Massive MIMO — which sends multiple channels of data at the same time, allowing users to have peak performances simultaneously — earlier this year on the 2.5GHz spectrum band in Suwon, South Korea.
The previous Korean trials made use of Samsung’s infrastructure, network design, operation, data collection, and data processing solutions along with Sprint’s test cases and scenarios.
« Samsung’s Massive MIMO hardware, equipped with vertical and horizontal beamforming technology, deployed 32 antennas, representing a four-fold increase in throughput from current, commercially deployed configurations,  » Shah wrote.
« Leveraging Sprint’s network, the test recorded peak speeds of 330Mbps per channel using a 20MHz channel of 2.5GHz spectrum. It also demonstrated a four-fold increase in capacity per channel and a three-fold increase in cell edge performance, and an improvement in the overall coverage area. »
Samsung now plans to unveil its roadmap for the commercial deployment of a 64-transmitter and 64-receiver (64T/64R) solution, with plans to increase peak cell throughput eight-fold.
The electronics giant said it would look to commercialise its Massive MIMO solutions in October this year on the time-division duplex (TDD) band, and next year on the frequency-division duplex (FDD) band.
Samsung’s announcement follows networking giant Ericsson last week unveiling a new Massive MIMO FDD LTE radio, to be available commercially in the second quarter of 2018.
The AIR 3246 radio supports both 4G LTE and 5G New Radio (NR) technologies, and joins the company’s previously launched three 5G and Massive MIMO TDD LTE radios, with its 5G platform also providing core, transport, digital support, and security.
In comparison to TDD, FDD devices and technology separate uplink and downlink streams on different radio frequencies.
Ericsson is using FDD Massive MIMO — which can increase network capacity by up to three times as much, and boost throughput by up to five times — to carry 4G traffic using mid-band spectrum in its trial with T-Mobile in Baltimore, Maryland.
Ericsson also attained download speeds of between 18Gbps and 22Gbps during the first live trial of 5G in Australia with Telstra last year, with the speeds split between two mobile devices, each one getting around 10Gbps using Massive MIMO.
In addition, a moving vehicle achieved download speeds of between 1Gbps and 6Gbps thanks to the use of beamforming, in which antenna arrays steer a beam to where a user is.
Sprint has also moved into deploying network-function virtualisation (NFV) OpenStack cloud nationwide using solutions from Mavenir.
Mavenir offers cloud-based networking products across all layers of the network infrastructure stack, including packet core, cloud RAN, voice over LTE (VoLTE) , voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) , and 4G and 5G application and service layers.
Sprint said it would be using Mavenir’s Telephony Application Server (TAS) , Media Resource Function (MRF) , and policy Diameter Routing Agent (pDRA) products.
« With this next step for NFV, we are extending our existing vendor ecosystem with the introduction of new, agile, and innovative players like Mavenir,  » Sprint COO of Technology Günther Ottendorfer said.
« Going forward, we will cap our expansion on legacy core network hardware, while growing new functionality and capacity on our virtualised platform. »
By virtualising its network, Sprint said it would be able to scale up and down its mobile core depending on demand.
In another attempt to improve its LTE coverage and add network densification, Sprint in May launched a small cell for homes and businesses.
Sprint’s « Magic Box » product provides almost 2,800 square metres of coverage indoors, and up to 100 metres outside of a premises.
« What creates the magic of Sprint Magic Box is an LTE-Advanced technology called LTE User Equipment (UE) Relay, used for wireless backhaul. UE Relay enables the Sprint Magic Box to create an ultra-efficient connection to our macro network using our 2.5GHz or 1.9GHz spectrum,  » Sprint CTO John Saw said in a blog post .
« Backhaul connections for other small cells use either fibre or a wireline internet connection, both of which require a physical cable and are expensive to deploy. One of the challenges with deploying indoor small cells is the need for wired backhaul connections, especially at business locations. The Sprint Magic Box with UE Relay removes this obstacle. »
Sprint also partnered with SoftBank and TBCASoft at the beginning of the year to develop solutions for telecommunications industry blockchain technology .
For the 2017 fiscal year, Spring reported a net loss of $1.21 billion with revenue of $33.35 billion.
