Samsung chief says 2018 Galaxy Note may have a foldable design

0

Samsung’s 2018 Galaxy Note phone may have a foldable design, if the company can solve the technical problems it faces with the device.
Samsung’s president of mobile, D. J. Koh, has said its 2018 Galaxy Note phone may have a foldable design, if the company can find solutions to unnamed problems with the technology. Koh made the statement to reporters in South Korea, stating that, “As head of the business, I can say [it is] our current goal in next year, ” when questioned about a bendable device.
Rumors of the Galaxy X, also known as Project Valley, have spread for years. The device has never been seen publicly, which indicates Samsung has been battling with technical issues, and this has now been backed up by Koh’s statement. He didn’ t provide any details on what the problems were, saying only that, “several hurdles” must be overcome before the phone is ready for release.
The exact design and nature of the device is also unknown. Patent designs and concept drawings have shown a take on the classic clamshell design, which when opened reveals a full length touchscreen. However, many of these concepts are several years old, and may no longer be relevant. Koh also warned that if the problems couldn’ t be solved in time, the release date for the bendable Galaxy Note will be pushed back.
Samsung’s Galaxy Note brand took a big hit at the end of 2016, after the Note 7 was recalled and ultimately canceled; but Samsung forged ahead with the Galaxy Note 8. The latest Note isn’ t all that different from the Note 7, and takes its one main feature difference — the Infinity screen — from the Galaxy S8. By reinventing the Galaxy Note brand with a cutting-edge flexible phone in 2018, Samsung could shake off the Note’s tarnished image, and return to the Note’s past glories as a technical showcase device for the company.
The last we heard about the Galaxy X was the possibility of a limited test run being produced in the second half of this year. It was never certain this device would be released to the public, but if it has been proceeding with moderate success behind closed doors, that may explain why Samsung is happy to tease future plans for the phone now. Additionally, the news also comes on the day Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, from which Samsung will be keen to draw attention.
Interestingly, this is not the first time flexible-screen technology has been linked with the Note line. In 2013, a special edition of the Galaxy Note 3 with a flexible display was rumored, but obviously was never released.

iPhone 8 release date, specs and price: ‘iPhone X’ to support Qi wireless charging
THE LONG AWAITED iPhone 8 is officially launching later today.
The smartphone, tipped by some to arrive as the ‘iPhone Edition’ or ‘iPhone X’, will be Apple’s 10th-anniversary smartphone and looks set to be the first to debut wireless charging tech, an edge-to-edge AMOLED display and an unusual vertical dual rear-facing camera. If rumours are correct, the so-called ‘Edition’ will launch alongside the less-impressive iPhone 7S and 7S Plus.

We’ve rounded up everything we know about the iPhone 8 so far and will update this article as soon as we hear more.
Release date The iPhone 8 will be officially unveiled on 12 September. Apple has sent out invites (below) to a launch event in its newly-built Steve Jobs Theatre on its new campus, where it’s also expected to unveil the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus.
Naturally, Apple will stream the event on its website, and it’s expected to kick off at 6pm UK time.
Despite the iPhone 8’s imminent launch event, some reports claim that it might not be available to buy until the fourth quarter, and in limited quantities. A note by analyst Timothy Arcuri from Cowen and Company has added weight to this and claims that production could be delayed due to issues with its Touch ID sensor.
Another report suggests the iPhone 8 may not arrive until 2018. A research note from Deutsche Bank, picked up by Business Insider, claims the smartphone won’t make it onto shelves this year due to supply chain issues and « technical challenges ».
However, German website Macerkopf claims that pre-orders of all the three 2017 iPhone models, including the iPhone 8, will begin on 15 September. Previous leaks suggest that it will arrive on shelves a week later on 22 September.
Price If it’s anything like Apple’s new MacBooks, next year’s iPhone will be more expensive than this year’s release, with some analysts claiming that the highest-spec model will be the first iPhone to cost more than $1,000.
More recently, Twitter tipster Benjamin Geskin has claimed that the entry-level 64GB iPhone 8 will fetch $999 (around £775) , while 256GB and 512GB variants will fetch $1,099 (£850) and $1,199 (£930) .
Rumoured specs – 5.8in 2.5D OLED edge-to-edge display – New design with an ‘all-glass’ construction – 71x143x7.4mm – Wireless charging support – Apple A11 chip – Rear-facing Touch ID sensor – iOS 11 with improved Siri, P2P payments – Face-scanning technology – Vertical dual cameras on rear – Support for LTE speeds up to 450Mbps
Latest news 12/8/17: KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo has ‘confirmed’, via 9to5Mac, that the so-called iPhone X, along with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, will support wireless inductive charging standards, which means that customers will be able to use third-party charges to take advantage of the feature. She also notes that Apple’s own wireless charging accessory won’t be ready at launch.
EE has added weight to this rumour, having today launched a new wireless charging bundle that allows customers to add a Qi charger to their plan.
12/8/17: Apple has added a new mail-in option to its iPhone Upgrade Program for US punters. Spotted by MacRumours, the new option will enable those upgrading to an iPhone 8 to mail their old smartphone to Apple using the firm’s Trade-in Kit, negating the need to visit a physical Apple Store.
11/9/17: In what some are calling one of the « biggest leaks of all time, Apple has leaked the Golden Master (GM) version of iOS 11. The information was made available by an Apple employee, according to blogger John Gruber.
The leak, according to 9to5Mac, reveals that the firm’s new flagship smartphone will arrive as the ‘iPhone X’ and will launch alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
Besides the name of Apple’s 10th anniversary iPhone, the iOS 11 leak also confirms that facial recognition, dubbed ‘Face ID’, support is coming (below) , which is expected to replace the Touch ID on the so-called iPhone X.
Other new features outed in the leak include, er, animated emoji (or ‘Animoji’) support, a Portrait Lighting mode for taking better selfies, True Tone Display and a rejigged lock button that will allow users to interact with Apple Pay and Siri in the absence of a physical home button. References to new Apple AirPods and a LTE-equipped Apple Watch have also cropped up in this mammoth leak.
8/9/17: The Wall Street Journal (paywalled) reports that « glitches » in the manufacturing of the iPhone 8 could lead to supply shortages and delays in shipping following the smartphone’s unveiling next week. The production glitches reportedly delayed the manufacturing process by about a month, sources ‘familiar with the matter’ told the newspaper.
7/9/17: German website Macerkopf claims that pre-orders iPhone 8 pre-orders will kick off on 15 September, adding weight to a previous leak courtesy of Evleaks. According to earlier rumours, the handset will arrive on shelves a week later on 22 September.
6/9/17: A shaky video, via Reddit, allegedly shows off a functional iPhone 8 just days before its official unveiling. The dark, blurry clip doesn’t give much away, but does appear to ‘confirm’ that the handset will sport a bezel-less display with an (ugly) notch cut out at the top of the screen. Some are speculating that the video is a fake, and, er, fingers crossed.
5/9/17: Prolific tipster Benjamin Geskin has tweeted alleged pricing details for the iPhone 8. He claims that the entry-level 64GB model will fetch $999 (around £775) , while 256GB and 512GB variants will fetch $1,099 (£850) and $1,119 (£930) , respectively. This matches up with previous speculation that this year’s iPhone will be Apple’s most expensive to date and the first to pass the $1,000 mark.
4/9/17: Adding weight the rumours that Apple will ditch the traditional home button on the iPhone 8, developer Guilherme Rambo claims that users will instead be able to activate Siri by holding the smartphone’s power button.
4/9/17: Notorious Twitter tipster Evan Blass has tweeted that the iPhone 8 likely will arrive as the ‘iPhone X’. Blass has also said that, following its unveiling on 12 September, the so-called iPhone 8 will be available to pre-order from 15 September, and will start shipping on the 22nd.
29/08/17: Japanese electronics site Macotakara claims that the iPhone 8 will finally offer wireless charging, but that Apple is planning a proprietary twist on the Qi standard to ensure that only Apple-approved charging pads can be used with its devices. What’s more, the site suggests that Apple will restrict its wireless charging to just 7.5W – half the wattage supported by the Qi standard. That’ll mean that Apple devices will charge much more s-l-o-w-l-y – half as quickly to be precise. It should also come with a beefier battery -around 2700 mAh or more, according to reports.
25/8/17: Got a spare grand knocking about? Because that’s what the iPhone 8 might cost, according to The New York Times. It’s not a new rumour, but given how close we are to launch it makes it firmer. This will be a premium model, it reports, but it isn’t entirely clear what the extra cash actually buys. That « grand » incidentally, is in dollars – or $999 to be precise – which in Her Majesty’s pound sterling will probably equate to, err, £999 or thereabouts (inc. VAT) .
24/8/17: Apple will unveil the iPhone 8 on 12 September, according to Mac4Ever, which allegedly received confirmation from telecoms companies. Separately, a post on Weibo claims that the smartphone will be made available in a new 512GB capacity option, with all models set to pack 3GB RAM.
23/8/17: According to the Korea Herald, the iPhone 8’s much-rumoured facial recognition system will be the handset’s « crown jewel ». The report claims that the tech will work in « just a few hundred milliseconds » and that it will replace Apples Touch ID sensor. The Korea Herald adds that adding 3D sensors will be adopted for the front and rear of the device to « realise AR applications, which integrate 3D virtual images with user’s environment in real time. »
22/8/17: A new leak, via SlashLeaks, has shown off a number of alleged iPhone 8 parts, including its flex cable for power transfer, some of its internal components and its display assembly (below) , which seems to confirm reports of a full-screen design with a ‘notch’ at the top to accommodate the phone’s front camera and earpiece.
2 1/8/17: John Gruber has taken to Twitter to claim that the iPhone 8’s much-rumoured wireless charging feature will require an additional accessory in order to work, while images on Chinese social media ‘confirm’ that Apple is working on a wireless charging pad to launch alongside the iPhone 8. However, Gruber claims that the feature might not be available to launch, noting that it could instead arrive with iOS 11.1.
17/8/17: In the strangest update you’ll probably see on this list, fast food chain McDonald’s appears to have leaked the iPhone 8’s ‘full screen’ design. In marketing for its ‘MyMaccas’ app (below) , sent out to nugget fans in Australia, McDonald’s includes an image of an iPhone with an edge-to-edge display, complete with the much-leaked ‘notch’ at the top of the screen which will reportedly house iPhone 8’s earpiece, front-facing camera and sensors.
17/8/17: Yet another rumour has claimed that Apple will bin Touch ID on the iPhone 8 in favour of face recognition. Mehdi Hosseini of Susquehanna Financial Group told Barron’s that Apple has decided to ditch its planned fingerprint sensor under the glass of the screen, because of problems with its « controller » chip.
15/8/17: A shaky video (below) has surfaced showing what looks like the iPhone 8 being assembled in a Foxconn plant. The 10-second clip doesn’t give much away but does appear to confirm that the handset’s rear shell will house a vertical dual camera setup.
14/8/17: The ‘copper’ coloured iPhone 8 (above) will reportedly launch as a new ‘Blush Gold’ variant, according to a post on Weibo via a so-called Foxconn Insider, and will replace Apple’s current ‘Rose Gold’ offering. The same post claims that this new model will be available with only 64GB or 128GB built-in storage.
10/8/17: Developer Guilherme Rambo has found yet more tidbits of information in the HomePod’s code. His latest find suggests that the iPhone 8 will be able to know when you’re looking at it, and could mute notifications when you’re gawping at the screen. Seperately, developer Steve Troughton-Smith has discovered that the iPhone 8’s virtual home button Developer Guilherme Rambo is resizable and can be hidden at the user’s command.
9/8/17: KGI Securities’ analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is back with more predictions, and this time is claiming that, while some rumours point to a launch in October, the iPhone 8 will be unveiled ‘on time’ in September. His latest report, obtained by Apple Insider, says that the handset will be available in ‘limited quantities’ though, with just two to four million handsets to be produced this quarter. Kuo also says that the iPhone will support fast charging through a Lightning-to-USB-C accessory, and notes that the iPhone 8 will be available in three colours – Black, Silver and Gold.
8/8/17: A new image of the iPhone 8 (below) , which comes via the ever-reliable Evan Blass, shows the handset in what appears to be a third-party protective case from Urban Armor Gear. While the spirit level-esque bumper ain’t all that exciting, it shows off the iPhone 8’s almost completely bezel-less display, complete with an odd ‘notch’ at the top to accommodate the earpiece, front-facing camera and sensors.
7/8/17: Some more details about the iPhone 8’s so-called ‘Face ID’ feature have surfaced online, courtesy of a report from iHelp BR. It has discovered some code strings that suggest that the face unlocking functionality could work when the device is ‘resting’, or flat, which means users won’t have to pick it up and gawp at it.
3/8/17: The iPhone 8’s rumoured ‘Face ID’ feature could be used for more than unlocking the device. According to more code spotted in the HomePod’s firmware, Apple plans to utilise the facial recognition technology for Apple Pay authentication, adding weight to the rumours that Touch ID could be dumped altogether.
Separately, Apple could also introduce a new ‘SmartCam’ scene selection features to the iPhone 8’s camera, that will be able to intelligently capture the best photos when shooting specific scenes like sun rises and fireworks.
2/8/17: During the firm’s Q3 earnings call this week, Tim Cook appeared to debunk speculation that the iPhone 8 will be delayed. He said that, for the next quarter, Apple is expecting bumper revenues of between $49bn-52bn, likely a sign that the firm’s upcoming flagship will be released in September.
31/7/17: Apple appears to have accidentally confirmed the iPhone 8’s ‘Face ID’ unlocking functionality. Early software for its HomePod speaker, spotted by iOS developers Steve Troughton-Smith and Guilherme Rambo, reveals support for face unlock inside BioMetricKit, all but confirming that iPhone 8 users will be able to unlock their device by gawping at it.
The code also ‘confirms’ that the iPhone 8 will feature an edge-to-edge screen, with no top bezel and no physical home button.
27/7/17: A new report from Macotakara adds yet more weight to speculation that the iPhone 8 will be plagued by delays and shortages, and claims that it won’t be released until the end of the year. The same report claims that Apple will not produce a white version of the iPhone 8, adding that colour variation will be « few ».
26/7/17: In a note seen by Apple Insider, Jun Zhang from Rosenblatt Securities writes that full production of the iPhone 8 won’t begin in earnest until the end of September. This, he claims, is due to Touch ID issues, with Apple working to iron out issues with the scanner before the smartphone launches. The report predicts that Apple will produce 25 million « iPhone 8 » units in September, and another 60 million in the holiday quarter.
24/7/17: A new leak courtesy of Forbes claims that the iPhone 8 will feature a « significantly improved » battery life. This will be due to a new L-shaped battery configuration that should deliver iPhone 7 Plus-beating stamina, but in a significantly smaller chassis, it claims. The same report claims that pricing for the iPhone will start from $1,100 to $1,200, with Apple to offer the handset in 128GB and 256GB configurations.
21/7/17: J. P. Morgan Apple analyst Rod Hall has said that Apple’s 10th anniversary will launch as the ‘iPhone Pro’, and said it will be available in limited quantities from September, debunking previous talk of delays. Hall claims that around two million handsets will be available from September, lower than his previous nine million estimates.
19/7/17: There’s yet more talk of the iPhone 8 arriving later than usual, with iGeneration reporting that Apple will unveil the handset in October. Interestingly, it claims the firm plans to unveil a new iPhone 5SE device at an event in August. Yeah, we’d advise to take this rumour with a pinch of salt.
17/7/17: Forbes claims to have revealed the ‘final design’ of the iPhone 8, having received CAD files from case designer Nodus. The report claims that « fears Apple would fall back on a less ambitious Plan B are unfounded » and says that users can expect to find the long-rumoured bezel-less design, 5.8in display and vertically-aligned rear-facing camera. The images (below) also reveal that the iPhone 8’s power button will be twice as big as that found on the iPhone 7, fuelling speculation that Apple could copy Sony with Touch ID integrated into the switch.
14/7/17: Apple might equip the iPhone 8 with a 3D laser system to make for better augmented reality (AR) functionality. So says Fast Company, which reports that the rear-facing laser will enable better depth detection for augmented reality apps, and a more accurate type of autofocus for photography.
12/7/17: A report at Fast Company claims Apple is in a flurry of ‘panic’ as it works around the clock to fix software bugs plaguing the iPhone 8. According to the report, Apple is struggling with issues plaguing the phone’s wireless charging support and its 3D sensor, which previous rumours have claimed will replace Touch ID on the 10th anniversary iPhone. If these issues are not ironed out, the report notes, the iPhone 8 could face production and delivery delays.
10/7/17: According to John Gruber, the iPhone 8’s wireless charging accessory may not be readily available when the handset launches later this year. This suggests that wireless charging won’t be supported out of the box, and will instead require a separate, no doubt proprietary, accessory.
A separate rumour, courtesy of Benjamin Geskin, claims the iPhone 8 will have a ‘mirror-like’ finish (above) that will be available in four colours at launch.

Bannon's Remarks Closed to Media at Conference in Hong Kong

Stephen Bannon will be speaking this afternoon at a Hong Kong conference, but the press will now be barred from listening to the media man and former White House chief strategist.
Stephen Bannon will be speaking this afternoon at a Hong Kong conference, but the press will now be barred from listening to the media man and former White House chief strategist.
Reporters won’ t be allowed to attend the almost hour-long session at the CLSA investor forum, according to an email from Simone Wheeler, a spokeswoman with the firm, which is an overseas unit of Chinese brokerage Citic Securities Co.
Wheeler had said Monday that media would be allowed to monitor Bannon’s comments via a live feed, with a subsequent moderated question-and-answer session off-limits to the press. Those plans “could change, ” she said at the time.
It’s not unusual for CLSA to bar media — former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin spoke in a closed-door session at the forum in 2009.
Bannon, who has returned to right wing news outlet Breitbart since leaving the White House in August, was recently in the news for calling President Donald Trump’s firing of FBI chief James Comey the biggest mistake in “modern political history.”

North Korea is trying to amass a bitcoin war chest

0

Sanctions are driving North Korean hackers to steal bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, according to cybersecurity firm FireEye.
Bitcoin and other forms of virtual money — known as cryptocurrencies — appeal to North Korea as the U. S. pursues international sanctions aimed at further isolating the country, according to a new report from FireEye.
« Sanctions against North Korea are likely to fuel their cybercrime activity,  » said Bryce Boland, Singapore-based chief technology officer with FireEye. « Attacks on cryptocurrency exchanges can be a great vehicle to obtain what is ultimately hard currency. »
Related: North Korea’s long history of hacking
It’s just the latest example of the illicit ways North Korea allegedly brings in money as it endures wave after wave of increasingly tough international sanctions over its rapidly advancing nuclear weapons program.
FireEye says it has identified three attacks against South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges that took place between May and July, all of them linked to North Korean hackers. The spike in activity began soon after the U. S. said it planned to ratchet up sanctions against North Korea.
With fresh U. N. sanctions and bitcoin’s skyrocketing value, « the potential windfall from these attacks has risen accordingly,  » Boland said.
A single bitcoin is currently worth more than $4,300, up from less then $1,000 at the start of the year.
Related: Bitcoin has doubled in value in a month. Here’s why
FireEye identified the North Korean group behind the bitcoin attacks as TEMP. Hermit. It has been has linked to other high-profile cyberattacks, including the hacking of Sony Pictures in 2014.
Hackers tied to North Korea are also suspected of carrying out a series of attacks on global banks that came to light last year. They included a cyberheist on Bangladesh’s central bank in which tens of millions of dollars were stolen.
The North Korean government has repeatedly denied involvement in international cyberattacks.
Intelligence agencies and cybersecurity experts have also linked North Korea to WannaCry, the biggest cyberattack the world has ever seen. The WannaCry virus initially demanded victims pay a ransom in bitcoin, yielding more than $140,000.
Related: Someone has emptied the ransom accounts from the WannaCry attack
Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are often held in accounts at online exchanges. But FireEye points out that hackers can swap them into other, more anonymous cryptocurrencies — or move them elsewhere and eventually withdraw them in traditional currencies like South Korean won or U. S. dollars.
North Korean hackers have previously targeted South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges, stealing bitcoin worth $88,000 (at the time) between 2013 and 2015, according to Yonhap News, which cited South Korean cybersecurity firm Hauri.

Good news Nintendo fans: the NES Classic Mini will be returning in 2018

0

Nintendo is bringing back the hugely successful but massively under-stocked NES Classic Mini.
It’s a good day for Nintendo fans, the company has announced that the NES Classic Mini is going to be back in stock next summer. The hugely successful console in a tiny little case sold like proverbial hotcakes, leading to stock running out and prices on auction sites souring.
While previously the company had said that shipments would cease at the end of this year, now the company is planning on shipping more units in 2018.
Interestingly, the same thing has been happening with its followup, SNES Classic Mini that is routinely selling out every time more come into stock. But there’s good news for people who want one of these too.
Nintendo is extending shipments of the SNES Classic Mini into 2018 too.
And that’s not all. For UK Nintendo fans, Game is celebrating National Video Game Day (yes, there is a video game day) by reducing the price of the Nintendo Switch to £259.99.

Apple Watch 3 latest rumours: Release date and specifications

0

Apple has a special event later today – could we see an LTE version of the Apple Watch 3? Read the latest rumours on the 2017 Apple Watch features, specifications and UK launch date.
When will Apple launch a Watch Series 3? We round up the plentiful rumours surrounding the ‘new iWatch’ release date along with its specs and features.
Right now, most rumours say Apple will launch the Watch 3 in September 2017, and that’s hardly a stretch given the fact that it has combined iPhone and Watch launches in previous years.
Apple does indeed have an event at 10am PST (6pm UK) later today (12 September) , so if the new watch is coming soon it will be announced today. See how you can tune into this event and follow our real-time coverage.
Invitations have gone out to the press:
Another report from Digitimes cites the Chinese-language Economic Daily News. This says that Apple has again given the manufacturing contract for the Watch 3 to Taiwan-based Quanta. The company has assembled all of Apple’s smartwatches so far, and that it will launch the new wearable alongside the iPhone 7s, 7s Plus and the new iPhone 8.
Previously, Digitimes reported on a leak that manufacturing was starting to ramp up, specifically for the screen (see below) .
More recently, another Chinese report claims the wearable is in the « final testing phase » and will be in mass production soon, so long as « the test is successful ».
What’s easy to predict is that the Apple Watch 3 will come in a range of models, colours and a choice of straps. This means prices will vary wildly depending on how basic or flashy you want to go. You can also expect collaborations with big brands, like Nike.
Apple, we think, will also continue to offer two different sizes to cater for both sexes, but we’re not at all confident that Apple will introduce a new form factor. That’s because watchOS 3 is designed for a square screen, as are third-party apps. So while it may look a little different – perhaps thinner – it’s very unlikely we’ll see a circular screen.
There are rumours that Apple will opt for a new form-factor in terms of design but whether this means a switch to a round screen like Android Wear devices remains to be seen.
So what other new features are rumoured?
This is the big one. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has piped up recently, saying that the Apple Watch 3 will come with cellular connectivity so it won’t require an iPhone to function.
You’d even be able to make calls and other tasks, although calls would be via VoIP (like FaceTime and Skype) rather than a cellular call.
Apparently, Intel is supplying the modem for the watch, partly because it’s smaller and uses less power than Qualcomm’s, but probably also because Apple is currently suing Qualcomm.
According to Kuo, there will be a choice of Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + LTE on both 38mm and 42mm models. It will have an ‘eSIM’ – essentially a built-in SIM – which bulk to a minimum.
Apple bought Beddit earlier this year and while we weren’t impressed with the Finnish company’s Sleep Tracker, we’re sure Apple can incorporate the tech into the Apple Watch and make it great.
It’s somewhat unlikely we’ll see this in the Watch 3, but you never know.
Until now, most reports have agreed that the Watch 3 won’t look much different from its predecessors – the main improvement will be in battery life rather than a new design or new features.
However, the US Patent and Trademark Office has published a patent application that could be applied to wearable, rollable and foldable displays. The accompanying images show a smartwatch that has a continuous display running from the watch face through the band.
It’s unlikely that we’d see these changes in the upcoming Apple Watch 3, though, and they are more likely to appear in a future version.
For the Apple Watch 3, a significant change (well, significant for Apple and its current OLED screen suppliers) is expected to be a switch from OLED technology to what’s called ‘micro-LED’. The new tech is actually quite similar to OLED in that the display does not require a backlight – each pixel or element is ‘self-emitting’.
What micro-LED brings to the party is higher brightness and lower power consumption, which could be key to making the Watch 3 last for more days between charges
Apple acquired LuxVue in 2014, a company that was developing micro-LED displays. However, a recent report by DigiTimes suggests that only a ‘trial production run’ will happen in the second half of this year.
If that’s true, then any device launched in September won’t have this tech.
Other reports say the device will have a glass-film touchscreen, rather than the ‘touch-on-lens’ screen used by the Series 2.
It would appear that the touch-on-lens screens are very difficult – and therefore costly – to produce and yields haven’t been as good as the manufacturer, TPK Holding, had hoped. Rumour has it that the forthcoming watch will use a thin glass panel covered in a heavy-duty, scratch-resistant film laminate, and that it will be manufactured by a different company.
Do you need a camera on your smartwatch? It didn’t work on the Samsung Gear 2 but Apple’s patent is for a selfie camera instead. So, the Apple Watch 3 could support taking selfie photos and maybe FaceTime video calling, too.
Recently granted patents suggest that Apple might be trialling modular bands which could allow you to buy a ‘base’ watch and add the features you want via removable ‘links’ in the strap. Maybe you want longer battery, a GPS, a camera or even a specific medial function.
One use for this, as reported by BGR, could be to monitor blood sugar levels. Millions of people in the US alone suffer from diabetes and there’s currently no way to measure blood sugar levels without taking a blood sample. According to the report, Apple has hired 200 PhDs recently to innovate in the health space and that « the time is now right » for glucose monitoring.
Rather than drive up the price of the watch for everyone, such monitoring could be added via sensors built into a strap.
Another interesting patent shows that Apple might be designing multi-function straps. A ‘Magnetic Wristband’ shows a strap which would attach to the body of the watch with magnets. However, the interesting bit it when the watch isn’t worn as the strap can be rolled up to create stand.
Could the Apple Watch 3 be round? We certainly hope so or at least an option for circular alongside square, but it’s only images from patents that are giving people hope. In reality, it’s one of the more unlikely features since – as we said earlier – watchOS has been designed for square displays.
Also, as spotted by 9to5mac, another new patent outlines a strap with an embedded battery (above) that provides power to the watch by an thin induction coil that sits on the bottom of the watch. This is essentially a mobile power bank, which uses the same wireless charging system that’s already used to charge the Watch, but a lot slimmer than the ‘puck’ that’s bundled in the box as that wouldn’t be comfortable in any way.
Though the screen may stay square, Apple could introduce 3D Touch to the Apple Watch 3 providing extra functionality. It was a possible feature for the Series 2 so we expect the next model to be adorned with the pressure sensitivity.
In a patent spotted by Patently Apple, Apple outlines a system called ‘Measuring Respiration Rate with Multi-Band Plethysmography’ that can be wrist-worn.
We’re not going to even try to explain that one but, in essence, using this tech the Apple Watch would be able to monitor your respiration rate. It would get around the issues seen by other monitors when body movement compromises the signal by using two light sensors rather than one, then subtracting one from the other to remove noise from the signal.
It’s a fairly out there suggestion for the Apple Watch of course, and if it does ever see the light of day in Apple’s smartwatch it may come in a later generation than the Series 3.
Apple didn’t mention any wearable hardware at WWDC back in June, but it’s fairly safe to assume the putative third-generation wearable will ship with watchOS 4.Apple did talk at length about that, and it’s coming to all Apple watches later in the year, including a new Siri watch face. Read more about the new features in watchOS 4.
In a leaked firmware for the upcoming Apple HomePod, a few possible Apple Watch features have been spotted in the code. They include new sports for the Workouts app, including ‘water fitness’, water polo, wrestling, yoga, ‘dance-inspired training’ and ‘mixed metabolic cardio training’.
It’s possible they’re customisable modes which you can ‘tune’ to the specific exercises you’re doing. And they’re unlikely to be exclusive to the Apple Watch 3.
We’ll update this article with more news and rumours as they appear, but if you’re listening Apple, our wishlist includes better battery life, an optional round screen, Qi wireless charging and smart straps. Okay? Thanks.

EE wireless charging options revealed coincidentally as iPhone X set to launch

0

EE now allows you to buy wireless charging pads with your phone… and we wonder why.
UK network EE has announced it will soon allow you to spread the cost of a wireless charging pad when you buy your new phone, making the announcement on the day Apple is set to announce the iPhone X and iPhone 8. Coincidence? We think not.
Belkin’s Qi Wireless Charging pad will soon be up for grabs alongside whatever handset you buy from the company for £29.99 in the UK. And while that news in and of itself may mean little to worldwide readers, the implications it seems to have for the upcoming iPhone X and iPhone 8 are of course interesting.
Considering rumors suggest both the iPhone 8 and iPhone X are set to have wireless charging capabilities using the Qi technology, this only adds more fuel to those very high flames.
Add to Plan is a scheme EE runs that allows you to buy accessories such as cases, headphones, VR headsets and fitness trackers alongside your phone and spread the cost over the course of your contract.
Apple is specifically named by EE alongside Beats and a number of other accessory manufacturers too, but that’s probably because you can buy Apple branded wireless charging cases for existing iPhone handsets.
Other Android handsets are capable of using Qi wireless charging including the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, but announcing this on the day of the new iPhone launch suggests the network may be hinting at what we’ll see launch this evening.
For all today’s Apple news, you can keep up with the iPhone X live stream as well as our iPhone 8 live blog too.
