Gary Numan, New Wave legend, brings science fantasy to music in his latest album

0

Musician Gary Numan shares insight on his new album « Savage » and his love of good noise
Gary Numan, the legendary musician whose first few records helped create the more robotic/electronic kind of New Wave that eventually gave birth to industrial music, is now touring his latest studio album, “Savage (Songs from a Broken World) , ” which comes out. While “Savage” continues to work the harder, more industrial-edge sound Numan has been exploring for over a decade, the lyrical content returns to the futuristic concepts that captured Numan’s imagination when he was young. He joined me on recent episode of Salon Talks. Here are some highlights from our conversation. Watch the video to hear more about the instrument he’s had since he was a teenager, and tune in to the full Salon Talks interview.

Amazing Indians extend winning streak to 17

0

During the franchise-record streak, they’ ve trailed for just four of 153 innings.
Cleveland — Over two hours before the game’s first pitch, the mood inside the clubhouse of baseball’s hottest team is almost fraternity-house loose.
In one corner, All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor smiles while peeling off his backpack and tosses it in his cubicle before cracking a joke at the expense of rookie center fielder Bradley Zimmer. Across the room, Jay Bruce re-arranges a few boxes that the outfielder hasn’ t had time to unpack since arriving in a trade from New York while reliever Joe Smith and starter Josh Tomlin argue over who has the higher average fastball velocity.
There’s music, laughter, video games and no signs of stress.
Yeah, these are indeed good times for the Cleveland Indians, who haven’ t lost in more than two weeks — and act as if they won’ t lose again.
With a win-today-and-forget-yesterday attitude that has filtered down from manager Terry Francona, the Indians, who came up one win short of a World Series title last season, are on the most impressive run since the franchise was founded in 1901.
On Saturday, the Indians extended their team-record winning streak to 17 with a 4-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, the latest team flattened by this runaway, run-scoring, run-stopping machine.
Cleveland’s streak is the second longest in the majors since 1961, trailing only the “Moneyball” 2002 Oakland Athletics, who won 20 in a row.
The Indians, who recently completed the first 11-0 road trip since the Cincinnati Reds in 1957, and nine wins from matching the record of 26 in a row set by the 1916 New York Giants, who had a rain-interrupted 1-1 tie during that span. In baseball, ties don’ t count in a team’s record.
“Nobody in here is really talking about it, ” said superstar-on-deck Lindor, who seems to get a big hit or make a dazzling play each game. “Everyone else is talking about it, but we’ re not.”
There’s plenty to discuss when considering what the Indians have accomplished during their torrid streak:
■Outscored opponents 118-30 while posting five of their baseball-best 17 shutouts.
■Trailed in just four of 153 innings, and scored first in the first 16 games of the streak.
■Swept a three-game series at Yankee Stadium for the first time since 1989, a four-game series in Detroit for the first time ever and two doubleheaders in three days.
■Became the first team since the ‘35 Cubs to post winning streaks of at least 14 games in consecutive seasons.
■Done it all without All-Star reliever Andrew Miller, outfielder Michael Brantley and Jason Kipnis, three of their best players who are sidelined by injuries.
Miller is nearing a return, but joked that now might not be the best time.
“I don’ t want to come back and mess it up, ” Miller said. “These guys are doing pretty good. A lot of things have gone our way, but these guys are playing really well. They’ re creating their own breaks. It’s been really fun to watch. It’s not a lot of fun to miss out on. Every night I turn on the TV and it’s pretty incredible what they’ ve been doing, winning games in all three facets of the game or whatever it takes or whatever it is.
“The guys who have come up have done a great job. It’s a testament to this team, the depth, everything. We’ re in a good spot.”
The winning streak began two days after Miller, arguably the team’s most irreplaceable player, went on the disabled list with knee tendinitis. At that moment, it seemed Cleveland’s dreams of getting back to the Series were in jeopardy and the AL Central wasn’ t a given.
But not only have the Indians coped minus Miller, they’ ve thrived. That’s not to say they won’ t need the lights-out left-hander to get them through October, but Cleveland, which lost to the Chicago Cubs in last year’s Series, has shown it can win in a variety of ways.
Francona has gotten contributions from the entire roster, including players who didn’ t arrive until Sept. 1.
“When you’ re plugging in guy after guy and you’ re still winning, that’s what makes it fun, ” said closer Cody Allen. “We did that last year, too, when guys were injured and others stepped in and had success.”
Francona has been hesitant to say much about the streak, not wanting it to become something his players are focused on trying to maintain.
“I don’ t think anybody’s getting caught up (in the streak) , ” Francona said. “We’ re keeping an eye on that pretty close and they’ re doing a good job.”
Surely it will end at some point, and when it does the Indians will resume chasing their first Series championship since 1948.
Until then, they’ re having fun doing something few teams have accomplished.
Francona smiled when asked if he had ever been on a team that won 16 straight games.
“My high school baseball coach texted me the other day, because we went 14-0 that year, ” he said. “But we ran out of games because the season was over.”
His Indians are far from done.

George Clooney: Steve Bannon 'is a failed f—ing screenwriter'

0

The Hollywood star slammed President Trump’s former advisor Steve Bannon at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday.
Don’ t let that smile fool you, George Clooney loves picking fights.
The Hollywood star slammed President Trump’s former advisor Steve Bannon at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, noting that the former film producer and financier would be sucking up to Clooney if he was still trying to make it big in Tinseltown.
“Steve Bannon is a failed f—ing screenwriter, and if you’ ve ever read [HIS] screenplay, it’s unbelievable. Now, if he’ d somehow managed miraculously to get that thing produced, he’ d still be in Hollywood, still making movies and licking my a– to get me to do one of his stupid-a– screenplays, ” Clooney said, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Bannon started as an executive producer in Hollwood in the 1990s and since then, has produced 19 films — most of which are not popular.
Clooney told reporters he likes picking fights and finds it amusing that the Bannon’s Breitbart News wants his head.
“I’ d be ashamed 10 years from now if those weasely little putzes, whose voices are getting a lot higher every week as this presidency starts to look worse and worse weren’ t still [AFTER ME] , ” Clooney said .
The 56-year-old new father of two has continually slammed Trump and his cohorts, so it is no surprise he’s targeted Bannon this time around.
He called the President a « Hollwood elitist » and a « demagogue » in the past.
The “Ocean’s Eleven” star has been asked on numerous occasions about a future in politics, but he has excluded himself from the possibility.
“The reality is there are many more people who are much better qualified than me, ” he said.
“By this time eight years ago we had already heard Obama give a speech at the convention and there was something going on. But right now nobody really sees anybody out there, so that’s when the Rock or whoever comes into play, ” Clooney continued.
“For me, I will support whomever I can by doing fundraisers or whatever and helping in ways I’ m probably better at than in making policies… I say just try to find a candidate that excites you, and it shouldn’ t be me.”
Clooney, a Kentucky native, married wife Amal in 2014 and the couple welcomed twins Alexander and Ella this June.

North Korea threatens to make US 'pay' for Nikki Haley's 'tongue-lashing'

0

Haley slammed the U. N. on Monday for unsuccessfully restraining North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
North Korea warned the U. S. against tightening sanctions over its nuclear program, saying the nation would « pay » for U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley’s threats against Pyongyang.
« The U. S. administration will have to pay a dear price for her tongue-lashing,  » North Korea’s deputy minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Hui Chol said.
Choe said that Pyongyang’s sixth nuclear test last week was significant for North Korea and the working project to create a « state nuclear force,  » according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency .
The North Korean government official reportedly said North Korea was eyeing the U. S. for its attempts to increase U. N. sanctions on the state’s nuclear weapons testing.
Haley slammed the U. N. on Monday for unsuccessfully restraining North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
« To the members of the security council, I must say, enough is enough,  » Haley said at an emergency session of the U. N. Security Council in New York. « We have taken an incremental approach, and despite the best of intentions, it has not worked. »
« The U. S. will look at every country that does business with North Korea as a country that is giving aide to their reckless and dangerous nuclear intentions,  » she added.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said later in the week that he has prepared an executive order with which the U. S. would pass sanctions on countries that conduct trade with North Korea, if the U. N. is unable to pass new sanctions.
Choe also insuited that the U. S. was being « irresponsible » by saying that North Korea wants war in « disregard of the international community’s will,  » when the U. S. was the one seeking punitive action through more sanctions.
« We will not take even a step back from the road of our option but keep bolstering the nuclear deterrence for self-defense to defend our government and people from the U. S. nuclear war threat,  » Choe said according to Yonhap. « The U. S. should never forget the position of the DPRK as a full-fledged nuclear power possessed of ICBM together with A-bomb and H-bomb, and the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] will keep watching every move of the U. S. »

Wyck Godfrey named president of Paramount Motion Picture Group

0

Wyck Godfrey, a film and TV producer, has been named president of Paramount Motion Picture Group, replacing Marc Evans.
Producer Wyck Godfrey has been named president of the Paramount Motion Picture Group, Paramount Pictures said Saturday.
Godfrey replaces Marc Evans, who served as head of the motion picture group since 2015. Paramount said Evans will transition into a production role at the studio.
Godfrey, who will report to Paramount Chief Executive Jim Gianopulos, will begin his new role in January. As president of the motion picture group, Godfrey will be responsible for the studio’s film operations, lead the creative and development group and oversee divisions such as music and casting.
Gianopulos described Godfrey as a “proven filmmaker” with “rare instincts” for producing projects and maintaining good talent relationships.
“By combining his experience and expertise with our talented production team, we feel we have the perfect mix for an exciting and rewarding future at Paramount Pictures, ” Gianopulos said in a statement.
The move comes as Gianopulos tries to turn around the struggling movie studio. He came onboard as CEO in March and will have to bolster the company’s film slate with more global hits.
Godfrey comes from film and television production company Temple Hill Entertainment, which he co-founded in 2006. Temple Hill Entertainment is known mostly for teen dramas and young adult films, including the “Twilight Saga” and the Maze Runner trilogy.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police officials and relatives of a university student murdered in 1996 attended a ceremony near the scene of the crime on Saturday.
Junko Kobayashi, 21, a Sophia University student, was bound and stabbed to death inside her apartment which was then torched, in Katsushika Ward on Sept 9,1996.
Kobayashi’s father made a brief statement to the media, saying he can never forgive the person who killed his daughter, destroying her dreams and hopes.
Since the investigation began, police have questioned more than 75,000 people and followed up on over 1,100 leads but have yet to come close to identifying a suspect or suspects, Fuji TV reported.
On Saturday, as they do each year on Sept 9, police handed out flyers at Kanemachi Station, which is nearest the victim’s residence.
In 2013, police extended the deadline by which members of the public may claim a reward of up to 3 million yen in exchange for information leading to an arrest. The family of the victim has also offered a further 5 million yen for such information, police said.
Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 03-3607-9051.

George Clooney debuts 'Suburbicon, ' calls it an angry movie for angry times

0

The actor debuted his latest directorial effort, ‘Suburbicon, ‘ at the Venice Film Festival Saturday, and said the film is an angry movie.
VENICE, Italy (AP) — Affable, handsome George Clooney was all charm at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, but don’t be fooled.
The actor says his latest directorial effort, Suburbicon, is an angry movie for an angry country — his own. It’s a twisted tale of darkness at the heart of the American dream.
« A lot of us are angry — angry at ourselves, angry at the way that the country is going, angry at the way the world is going,  » Clooney told reporters Saturday in Venice, Italy, where Suburbicon is competing for the festival’s Golden Lion prize.
Fall movie preview: 10 movies you must see
« It’s probably the angriest I have ever seen the country, and I lived through the Watergate period of time,  » he added. « There is a dark cloud hanging over our country right now. »
America’s divisions give an unnerving timeliness to Suburbicon. The satirical film noir stars Matt Damon and Julianne Moore as residents of a seemingly idyllic — and all-white — 1950s suburban community that erupts in anger when a black family moves in.
It fuses a script by the Coen brothers with a narrative about racial divisions inspired — in a negative way — by Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.
« I was watching a lot of speeches on the campaign trail about building fences and scapegoating minorities,  » Clooney said.
That set Clooney and writing-producing partner Grant Heslov to thinking about other points in United States history when forces of division were in the ascendant. They remembered 1957 events in Levittown, Pennsylvania, a model suburban community where white residents rioted at the arrival of a black family.
They fused that idea to an unproduced script by Joel and Ethan Coen about a similar white-picket-fence community where a crime goes horribly wrong in farcically bloody ways.
The images of white rage in the movie feel unnervingly contemporary, recalling last month’s rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia.
« Unfortunately, these are issues that are never out of vogue in our country,  » Clooney said ahead of the film’s red carpet premiere. « We are still trying to exorcise these problems. We’ve still got a lot of work to do from our original sin of slavery and racism. »
On one level, Suburbicon is a comedy, in which the best-laid plans of Damon’s scheming corporate executive go bloodily astray. Damon and Moore practically explode with suburban repression, and there’s a delicious turn by Oscar Isaac as a prying insurance investigator.
Saturday was Damon’s second time on the Venice red carpet this week. He also stars in Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, in which — as so often — he portrays a likable everyman.
PHOTOS: A-list photos from the Venice Film Festival
But Damon also can play the psychopath, as he demonstrated memorably in The Talented Mr. Ripley. In Suburbicon, he’s a bland suburbanite who becomes a monster.
« I don’t really get to play the bad guy a lot, but I do get a nice range of roles,  » Damon said.
He recalled Payne telling him, « I like you because you don’t look like a movie star. »
« And I know exactly what he meant,  » Damon said. « I look kind of like an average American person, so I think directors get to have fun playing with different variations of what that might mean. »
For all the bloody fun in Suburbicon, the social concerns Clooney displayed in previous films he directed — including Good Night, and Good Luck and The Ides of March — are never far from the surface.
The Clooney Foundation he runs with his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, gave $1 million in the wake of Charlottesville to the Southern Poverty Law Center to combat hate groups.
Clooney said he was anxious that Suburbicon not be a polemic or « a civics lesson. »
« We wanted it to be funny, we wanted it to be mean,  » he said. « But it is certainly angry, and it got angrier as we were shooting. »
