Apple's next iPhones could be called the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone Edition

0

While Apple doesn’t have an official presence at IFA Berlin, its partners do and look to have some interesting information regarding the firm’s nomenclature for the upcoming range of iPhones.
After months of leaks and rumors, Apple finally announced that it would be holding an event on September 12th. As we head into a busy week at IFA in Berlin, it appears that case vendors are hearing news about potential monikers that could be used for the upcoming iPhones.
According to the folks at 9to5Mac, who have discussed and cross referenced the nomenclature with various sources, including one that has a direct line to Shenzhen which has claimed to have seen the new iPhone packaging, it appears that the next iPhones could arrive as the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone Edition.
While we have heard these names used in great detail over the past few months, the last one is of particular interest because iPhone Edition originally sprang up in a report from trusted Apple resource Mac Otakara as early as March. While things could obviously change from now until the day of launch, at least one case manufacturer has updated their SKUs based on the available information, showing off the designs behind closed doors at IFA 2017.
Luckily, we won’t have to wait much longer, with Apple set to announce its upcoming iPhones in the coming weeks, along with a new Apple Watch, and Apple TV with 4K support in the newly built Steve Jobs Theater .

Fire, thick black smoke billows from Texas chemical plant

HOUSTON (AP) — Thick black smoke and towering orange flames shot up Friday from a flooded Houston-area chemical plant where highly unstable…
HOUSTON (AP) — Thick black smoke and towering orange flames shot up Friday from a flooded Houston-area chemical plant where highly unstable compounds blew up a day earlier after losing refrigeration.
It was the second day that flames and smoke could be seen at the Arkema plant in Crosby. Arkema says Harvey’s floodwaters engulfed its backup generators and knocked out the refrigeration necessary to keep the organic peroxides from degrading and catching fire. After Thursday’s fire, Arkema had said it had eight more containers that could blow up.
The Environmental Protection Agency and local officials said an analysis of the smoke that came from the plant early Thursday showed no reason for alarm. No serious injuries were reported.
A 1½ mile buffer (2.4 kilometers) around the plant was established Tuesday when Arkema Inc. warned that chemicals kept there could explode. Employees had been pulled, and up to 5,000 people living nearby were warned to evacuate. Officials remain comfortable with the size of the buffer, Rachel Moreno, a spokeswoman for the Harris County Fire Marshal Office, said Friday evening.
Arkema spokeswoman Janet Smith reiterated statements executives made earlier Friday that the remaining containers of organic peroxides would explode and that the safest course of action is to simply « let these fires happen and let them burn out. »
Harvey’s floodwaters engulfed backup generators and cut off the refrigeration necessary to keep the organic peroxides, used in such products as plastics and paints, from degrading and catching fire.
Arkema officials did not directly notify local emergency managers of the generator failure, Moreno said.
In a conference call with reporters Friday, Arkema’s president and chief executive, Rich Rowe, apologized and said he was sending a team of employees to Crosby to figure out how best to assist locals.
« I realize this is not a situation that we can help remedy overnight,  » he said.
Early Thursday, two blasts blew open a trailer containing at least 2 tons of material, sending up a plume of black smoke and flames 30- to 40-foot (9- to 12-meter) high in the tiny town of Crosby, about a half-hour from Houston, authorities said. The Texas environmental agency called the smoke « especially acrid and irritating » and said it can impair breathing and inflame the eyes, nose and throat.
Questions persisted Friday about the adequacy of Arkema’s master plan to protect the public in the event of an emergency in flood-prone Houston, a metropolitan area of about 6 million people.
The plant is along a corridor with one of the nation’s greatest concentrations of refineries, pipelines and chemical plants. A 2016 analysis led by Texas A&M University researchers identified Arkema’s facility as posing one of the region’s biggest risks, based on such factors as the type and amount of chemicals and the population density.
« This should be a wake-up call (for) all kinds of plants that are storing and converting reactive chemicals in areas which have high population densities,  » said Massachusetts Institute of Technology expert Nicholas Ashford.
In accident plans Arkema submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency in 2014, executives said a hurricane and a power loss were potential hazards. Yet the plans, which were supposed to address worst-case scenarios, didn’t explain what Arkema would do if faced with either.
Executives also acknowledged Friday that they didn’t have materials at the plant that could have neutralized the organic peroxides.
Instead, workers were forced to scramble and move the chemicals away from floodwaters after buildings were engulfed and power was lost. Workers transferred the compounds to refrigerated containers, but those failed, too, causing Thursday’s fire.
Arkema officials had not directly notified local emergency managers of the generator failure, said Moreno. The plant’s workers told the Crosby Volunteer Fire Department about it when they were rescued during the storm, she said.
Despite receding waters, Arkema vice president Daryl Roberts said he didn’t think refrigeration systems would restart, but the organic peroxides were a safe distance from other hazardous chemicals.
After days of questions about what was in its chemical inventory, the company posted a list of them on its website Friday, though not the amounts on hand. Asked why it hadn’t shared the information sooner, Rowe said, « We’re managing our way through a crisis. »
State and federal regulators have cited Arkema for safety and environmental violations at the Crosby plant dating back more than a decade, records show.
Texas’ environmental commission penalized the plant at least three times. In June 2006, Arkema had failed to prevent unauthorized emissions during a two-hour warehouse fire. Records show a pallet of organic peroxide was poorly stored, resulting in the blaze, and more than a ton of volatile organic compounds were discharged.
More recently, the U. S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration in February fined Arkema nearly $110,000 — later reduced to just over $90,000 — because of 10 serious safety violations found during an inspection.
« We don’t have a perfect record, we understand that,  » Arkema’s Rowe said. « We strive to get better at every turn and will continue to do so. »

Smoke spotted coming out of Russia consulate day before facility closure

0

Black smoke could be seen billowing out of a chimney at the Russian consulate in San Francisco on Friday, a day before the Russian government will be forced to vacate the facility.
The San Francisco Fire Department posted on social media about the incident, tweeting that « everything is okay. »
California Rep. Jackie Speier also tweeted about the scene.
« If there ever was doubt that espionage was going on in the SF consulate, black smoke clears the air on the issue,  » she wrote Friday afternoon.
The abrupt facility closure is just the latest in a series of tense diplomatic moves between the two nations, following reports last year that Russia interfered in the US’ 2016 elections.
The decision to close the facilities was made by President Donald Trump, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters. The decision followed Russia reducing the size of the US mission in the country.
« We believe this action was unwarranted and detrimental to the overall relationship between our countries,  » State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement about Russia’s move.

Large fire, smoke erupts at Houston-area chemical plant

0

Dangerous chemical reactions continued for a second day at the site of a flooded Houston chemical plant that lost power due to Hurricane Harvey, officials said.
Sept. 1 (UPI) — A Houston-area chemical plant that lost power due to Hurricane Harvey erupted in flames and a large cloud of smoke Friday evening, local authorities said.
The Arkema chemical plant — located in Crosby, Texas, just east of Houston — first let off a series of chemical explosions early Thursday morning, sparking flames and a 40-foot plume of smoke — prompting Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office to order the evacuation hundreds of residents within 1.5 miles of the facility.
Other small fires and explosions continued Thursday and early Friday. Later Friday, though, visible flames and a large, dark plume of smoke could be seen coming from the site.
One local resident said they heard a series of « popping » noises coming from the plant early Friday for about 15 minutes. Fire Marshal spokeswoman Rachel Moreno said the noise was made by additional chemical reactions, but they did not lead to fire.
Several deputies were hospitalized after being exposed to a plume of black smoke Thursday, but were later released.
The company has not said specifically what chemicals are being stored at the facility, though Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Brock Long called the plume of smoke that was generated « incredibly dangerous. »
The chemicals have been described as « organic peroxides. »
Emergency crews continue to monitor the site, as additional eruptions are possible.
Harvey knocked out the plant’s primary power source and two backup generators were flooded. Workers moved the chemicals to refrigerated storage vans in an attempt to lessen the damage, but told the Chronicle the vans would inevitably fail because they are not designed to permanently hold the chemicals at a proper temperature.
The plant has been shut down since before Harvey arrived a week ago.

Nurse arrested for denying blood test: 'This cop bullied me'

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah nurse said she was scared to death when a police officer handcuffed and dragged her screaming…
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah nurse said she was scared to death when a police officer handcuffed and dragged her screaming from a hospital after she refused to allow blood to be drawn from an unconscious patient.
Alex Wubbels said Friday that the videotaped arrest, which has drawn attention amid a national conversation about police use of force, shows that bullying does not just happen in schools.
« This cop bullied me. He bullied me to the utmost extreme,  » Wubbels said in an interview with The Associated Press. « And nobody stood in his way. »
A Utah prosecutor called for a criminal investigation. The Salt Lake City police chief and mayor apologized and changed department policies in line with the guidance Wubbels was following in the July 26 incident.
She said she adhered to her training and hospital protocols to protect the rights of a patient who could not speak for himself.
« You can’t just take blood if you don’t have a legitimate concern for something to be tested,  » Wubbels said. « It is the most personal property I think that we can have besides our skin and bones and organs. »
Salt Lake City police Detective Jeff Payne has been suspended from the department’s blood-draw unit, but remains on duty as a detective during reviews by police and a civilian board. He did not return messages left at publicly listed phone numbers.
« I was alarmed by what I saw in the video with our officer,  » Police Chief Mike Brown said.
Police body-camera video shows Wubbels, who works in the burn unit, calmly explaining that she could not take blood from a patient who had been injured in a deadly car accident, citing a recent change in law. A 2016 U. S. Supreme Court ruling said a blood sample cannot be taken without patient consent or a warrant.
Wubbels told Payne that a patient had to allow a blood sample to determine intoxication or be under arrest. Otherwise, she said police needed a warrant. Police did not, but Payne insisted.
The dispute ended with Payne saying, « We’re done, you’re under arrest » and pulling her outside while she screamed and said, « I’ve done nothing wrong! »
He had called his supervisor and discussed the time-sensitive blood draw for over an hour with hospital staff, police spokeswoman Christina Judd said.
« It’s not an excuse. It definitely doesn’t forgive what happened,  » she said.
The detective left Wubbels in a hot police car for 20 minutes before realizing that blood had already been drawn as part of treatment, said her lawyer, Karra Porter. Wubbels was not charged.
« This has upended her worldview in a way. She just couldn’t believe this could happen,  » Porter said.
Wubbels and her attorneys released the video Thursday to draw attention to what happened and call for change. She has not sued, but that could change, said another attorney, Jake Macfarlane.
Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said that he was concerned watching the video and called the police chief to ask for a criminal investigation.
The department is open to the inquiry that will be run by Salt Lake County’s Unified Police, Judd said. Gill’s office will review the findings.
In response to the incident, Judd said the department updated its blood-draw policy last week to mirror what the hospital uses. She said officers have already received additional training.
The agency has met with hospital administration to ensure it does not happen again and to repair ties.
« There’s a strong bond between fire, police and nurses because they all work together to help save lives, and this caused an unfortunate rift that we are hoping to repair immediately,  » Judd said.
The hospital said it’s proud of the way Wubbels handled the situation.
The patient was a victim in a car crash and Payne wanted the blood sample to show he had done nothing wrong, according to the officer’s written report.
The patient, William Gray, is a reserve police officer in Rigby, Idaho, according to the city’s police. They thanked Wubbels for protecting his rights.
Gray is a semi-truck driver and was on the road when a pickup truck fleeing from authorities slammed into him and his truck burst into flames, police reports say.
Messages for the Salt Lake Police Association union were not immediately returned.
