In a break from a trend that has seen technology companies invest heavily in low-cost two-in-one hybrids over the past couple of years, Samsung in early January announced a new high-end laptop called the Notebook Odyssey. The Notebook Odyssey is designed for gamers and other PC buyers who crave processing power from the latest Intel Core processors with plenty of other features and options. The Notebook Odyssey comes with an optional 17.3-inchscreen and the option of upgrading with more memory and data storage capacity. The device, which runs on Microsoft’s Windows 10, also delivers an interesting take on mobile keyboards by offering key caps with different shapes. Samsung plans to announce more Notebook Odyssey details in the spring, including pricing as well as CPU and GPU options. All the cool new phones are losing the headphone jack and it’s giving us separation anxiety. After it happened to the Moto Z and iPhone 7 , it was rumored that the Samsung Galaxy S8 would lose its jack, too. But an alleged Galaxy S8 phone case was spotted that shows that this might not be the case (har har).

Of course, just because the alleged case is said to belong to the Galaxy S8, that doesn’t confirm the phone’s upcoming design. Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Kan., nominee for director of the Central Intelligence Agency, was questioned on privacy rights.
If your Facebook profile is public, it’ll be an open invitation for the CIA.
The Central Intelligence Agency is obligated to follow up on information that’s on a public website, including on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, Mike Pompeo, Trump’s pick for the next CIA boss, said during his confirmation hearing Thursday.
« If someone is out there on their Facebook, talking about an attack or plotting an attack against America, I think you would find the director of the CIA grossly negligent if they didn’t pursue that information, » Pompeo said.
During the hearing, lawmakers hit the Republican congressman from Kansas on privacy issues. In 2015, Pompeo pushed to give mass surveillance tools back to the National Security Agency through the  » Liberty Through Strength Act II.  » The NSA’s mass data surveillance program had been defanged after whistle-blower Edward Snowden’s revelations.
Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., was concerned with Pompeo’s drive to make mass surveillance more powerful through that bill, which went so far as to propose collecting financial and « lifestyle » information in a « comprehensive, searchable database.  » Wyden wanted to know what limits Pompeo’s rejected bill would have had.
« You would be in favor of a new law collecting all of this data about the personal lives of our people, » Wyden asked at the hearing.
Pompeo, who has called for Snowden’s death , said the US needed to collect publicly available information to « keep Americans safe.  »
The Orlando nightclub gunman posted a cryptic warning on his Facebook page before committing his murders last June. A student at Ohio State in November reportedly did the same on Facebook before perpetrating a knife attack on campus.
Pompeo said public social media profiles such as those on Facebook could be useful in the CIA’s counterterrorism efforts. He promised the Senate intelligence committee that the CIA wouldn’t unlawfully spy on US citizens, reminding the lawmakers that he’s voted for legislation protecting privacy.
He stressed that he was specifically talking about information available to the public, including Facebook posts. Facebook didn’t respond to requests for comment. The social network already scans people’s posts and chats for any criminal activity, according to a 2012 interview.
The committee also challenged Pompeo on his social media history. After Pompeo said he’s « never believed that WikiLeaks is a credible source of information, » Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, asked, « Well, how do you explain your Twitter?  »
The senator brought up a tweet from July 24, 2016, in which Pompeo posted a WikiLeaks story as « proof that the fix was in from » President Barack Obama.
Pompeo stumbled before telling the committee he’d have to « go back and take a look » at his tweet from seven months ago.
WikiLeaks hit back against Pompeo’s criticism on Thursday, tweeting that it had a « perfect record » for accuracy while Pompeo didn’t.
On cybersecurity, Pompeo said he believes the US was attacked by Russia during the presidential election and that he considered it a national risk. He echoed the call made by John McCain, Republican senator from Arizona, to establish a policy on how to respond to cyberattacks.
The potential CIA director also agreed with Trump’s criticisms of US cyberdefense .
« We have an awful lot of work to do. There’s no reason to expect this threat to diminish, » Pompeo said at the hearing.

For decades, Consumer Reports (CR) has acted as a fairly respected consumer watchdog, testing the claims of countless products and offering up assessments to help the public choose in a world filled with dubious advertising. When the magazine said that Apple’s new MacBook Pro was lacking in the battery life department , there was general surprise. After some investigation, though, it appears that the testing conditions were unusual. CR’s methodology may have been flawed , though it exposed a Safari bug in the process.
In a statement to TechCrunch, Apple said that CR used a hidden setting in Safari that disabled caching completely. CR explains in an update posted yesterday that the test it ran on the new MacBook Pro is the same one it uses for every other laptop. The lab disables caching in the machine’s primary browser and then has it downloading a set of sites over and over again. These conditions were intended to more closely simulate the user going to new webpages over and over, rather than reading the same 10 sites from the cache over and over again.
Apple contends, however, that this method doesn’t reflect real-world usage. It also states that « the use of this setting also triggered an obscure and intermittent bug reloading icons which created the inconsistent results in their lab.  » Apple says it asked CR to run tests with that setting enabled and the Macbook Pro consistently delivers the expected battery life under those conditions. The company also notes that the Safari icon downloading bug has been fixed. CR is now fully re-testing the MacBook Pro and will publish its findings.
The idea of « real-world usage » is a hard one to nail down accurately. Users intermittently consume media, browse, open and close the laptop, and plug it in for charging. While CR didn’t want to test re-downloading the same site over and over, many users’ browsing habits often mirror that. While I visit plenty of sites throughout a day’s work and in my leisure time, the majority of my browsing is done on a tight core of the same sites which, as Apple notes, would take advantage of a browser’s caching ability.
As a result of CR and Apple’s cooperation, though, readers have a better understanding of what caused the disparity between the official estimate and tested results. Now, only time will tell if Apple’s fix to Safari will sort out the battery life issues that end-users are reportedly experiencing.
