Francois Fillon and wife questioned over payment row

French police have interviewed presidential candidate Francois Fillon and his wife Penelope over claims she was paid for fake work.
They provided information that would help find the « truth », Mr Fillon said.
Last week investigators began a preliminary inquiry into reports she earned €500,000 ($534,000; £428,000) as her husband’s parliamentary assistant.
Le Canard Enchaine newspaper has questioned how much work she did for the money between 1998 and 2012.
Both the centre-right candidate and his Welsh-born wife deny any wrongdoing.
In a statement , he said that the information they provided to police would prove the work done by Mrs Fillon.
Mr Fillon said last week he was « outraged by the contempt and misogyny » in the newspaper’s story.
He also said that he wanted to be heard by the investigators and would step down if put under formal investigation.
The husband and wife were questioned separately by police specialising in financial crime, BBC Paris Correspondent Hugh Schofield says.
The whole affair is causing serious jitters in Mr Fillon’s centre-right Republican party, he adds.
They are hoping that the documents provided to police are enough to show that Penelope Fillon did indeed earn the money she received.
Mr Fillon, 62, is the front-runner for the presidential election in April. National Front leader Marine Le Pen and centrist Emmanuel Macron are seen as his main challengers.
The practising Catholic is an admirer of Margaret Thatcher and defeated the more moderate Alain Juppe in a landslide at party primaries in November.

Warum man jetzt lieber nicht in die Auto-Waschanlage fahren sollte
Es soll ja noch immer Leute geben, die mit ihrem Samstagnachmittag nichts Besseres anzufangen wisse, als ihr Auto aus der Garage zu fahren und es unter dem Einsatz von Schwamm, Schaum, Lack- und Antirostsprays einzuseifen und zu wienern, bis die Sonne hinter den Horizont abgebogen ist. Gerade so, als müssten sie ihr Fortbewegungsmittel für die nächste Automesse in Form bringen. Zu diesem Menschentyp gehören wir leider nicht. Auch wenn uns die betagte Karre ans Herz gewachsen ist, sieht sie doch stets aus wie. . ., na ja, lassen wir das. Aber in diesen schneereichen Tagen ist es wirklich nicht mehr zum Ansehen: Der Wagen ähnelt zunehmend einem eingelegten Hering. Alles voller Salz. Die weiße Deckschicht verschleiert zwar gnädig einige rotbraune Stellen, ob sie allerdings die Haltbarkeit der geliebten Rostlaube verlängert, erscheint doch fragwürdig.
Also fuhren wir an einem arktisch-eisigen Morgen zur Tankstelle. Einmal Glanzwäsche, einmal Unterbodenwäsche – bitte. Die wie immer freundliche Angestellte sah uns ein bisschen mitleidig an und rückte dann mit der Hiobsbotschaft heraus. Die Waschstraße sei heute leider geschlossen, sagte sie. Nicht weil es dort irgendeinen Defekt gäbe oder Eiszapfen von den Reinigungsbürsten hingen, sondern einfach deshalb, weil das Auto bei minus zehn Grad sonst Schaden nähme. Darauf hätten wir auch selbst kommen können, als wir in voreiliger Freude sahen, dass sich vor dem Waschportal nicht wie sonst Fahrzeug an Fahrzeug reihte. Einen Trost gewährte die Mitarbeiterin: Wir könnten es ja mittags noch mal probieren, vielleicht habe es dann bloß minus zwei Grad – sofern sich die Sonne zeige.
Tat sie nicht. Unsere geliebte Karre bleibt also in eine Salzkruste gehüllt. Selbstverständlich arbeiteten wir nicht an unserer Aversion gegen das eigenhändige Autowaschen, weniger aus Faulheit, sondern der Feuerwehr zuliebe. Die hätte sonst in den saukalten Tagen anrücken und uns, mit Lappen und Antikorrosionsspray tiefgefroren nach vorne gebeugt, vorsichtig von der Motorhaube lösen müssen. Nichts läge uns ferner, als den Einsatzkräften so putzteuflisch das Wochenende zu versalzen. Außerdem wird es ja jetzt wärmer, Regen statt Schnee. Hallo, Roststellen!

Finanziell hat sich ihr Engagement bei Volkswagen gelohnt! Für sie zumindest: Nach nur 13 Monaten im Konzern kassiert VW-Vorstandsfrau Christine Hohmann-Dennhardt (66) offenbar rund 12 Millionen Euro.
Das berichtet der „Spiegel“. Demnach kann sich die Juristin über eine so hohe Zahlung freuen, weil ihr eine Abfindung von knapp zwei Jahresgehältern zusteht.
Außerdem bekommt sie eine Entschädigung, weil sie zuvor beim Konkurrenten Daimler war – und dort für den Wechsel zu VW auf Millionen-Ansprüche verzichtete.
Das „Handelsblatt“ , berichtete, VW zahle der Juristin insgesamt rund 13 Millionen Euro. Ein VW-Sprecher wollte die Berichte nicht kommentieren.
Hohmann-Dennhardt war Anfang 2016 von Daimler als Vorstand für Integration und Recht nach Wolfsburg gewechselt – und sollte die Aufarbeitung des Abgas-Skandals vorantreiben. Die frühere Verfassungsrichterin war ausdrücklich als Aufräumerin nach Wolfsburg geholt worden.
In der vergangenen Woche hatte Volkswagen mitgeteilt, Hohmann-Dennhardt der Konzern trennten sich „aufgrund unterschiedlicher Auffassungen über Verantwortlichkeiten und die künftigen operativen Arbeitsstrukturen in ihrem Ressort“, wie das Unternehmen mitteilte.
Dem Vernehmen nach gab es interne Querelen über die genaue Rolle Hohmann-Dennhardts bei VW.

Hohmann-Dennhardt bezeichnet die zweistellige Millionen-Zahlung als üblich.
„Dass ein Vertrag erfüllt wird, ist ein ganz normaler Vorgang“, sagte Hohmann-Dennhardt der Süddeutschen Zeitung . „Ich habe nichts zu verbergen.“
Bei Daimler hatte sie bei der Aufarbeitung eines US-Schmiergeld-Skandals – ebenfalls in Vorstandsfunktion – eine gute Figur gemacht. Bevor sie ab 2011 in Stuttgart ein System von Regeln zur Vermeidung zwielichtiger Machenschaften installieren sollte, war sie zwölf Jahre lang Richterin am Bundesverfassungsgericht. In den 90er Jahren war die SPD-Politikerin hessische Landesministerin unter anderem für Justiz.

アングル：トランプ大統領の入国制限令、全米混乱の裏側

［ニューヨーク２９日ロイター］ – 米ニューヨーク州ジョン・Ｆ・ケネディ国際空港（ＪＦＫ）で２８日、国境警備局職員がイラク人２人を拘束したことを受けて、彼らの弁護士と２人の米民主党議員は、話をしようと保護区域を横切ろうとした。
すると職員が彼らを押しとどめ、「下がれ、下がれ」と叫び、押し問答になった。
数分後、ＪＦＫの米税関・国境警備局（ＣＢＰ）旅客担当責任者であるハイディ・ナッサー氏が呼ばれた。
ニューヨーク州選出のジェロルド・ナドラー議員とニディア・ベラスケス議員（共に民主党）は、トランプ大統領が２７日に署名した移民の入国を禁止する大統領令では、イラク人が弁護士と話すことも禁じているのかと詰め寄った。
ナッサー氏は、明確な答えを持たなかった。「他の皆と同様、われわれも暗やみのなかにいる」と同氏は述べた。
ロイターが目撃したこの激しいやりとりは、トランプ氏がイスラム圏７カ国の市民や難民の米国への入国を一時禁止するとの大統領令に署名したのを受け、全米や世界各国の空港で起きた混乱を象徴している。
この大統領令の実施をめぐり非難を浴びているトランプ政権は２８日、外国グループによる攻撃の阻止を目的とするこうした安保対策を行う前に、広く政府機関や空港にその詳細を明かすのは「無謀」だと自らを擁護した。
だが、この大統領令を継続的に実施するうえでの複雑性や、関連機関や航空会社に準備をさせる必要性を政府が十分に理解していないと、国土安全保障省や国務省の幹部らはロイターに指摘した。
政府職員と治安当局者は２８日、誰が合法的に米国に入国でき、誰が入国できないのかを推測するほかなかった。
だがニューヨーク州ブルックリンの連邦地裁が大統領令の効力を一部停止し、有効な査証（ビザ）を持つ人が一時的に滞在できる判断を示した。米国自由人権協会は、乗り継ぎ中に、あるいは米空港で拘束された、ビザや難民資格のある１００─２００人を支援するとしている。
このほか、カリフォルニア、マサチューセッツ、バージニア、ワシントン各州の連邦地裁が大統領令を執行停止にしたが、無効との判断はしていない。ただ、こうした判断が増えることで政権側の取り組みが困難になる可能性もある。
＜蚊帳の外＞
トランプ政権のある幹部は、米国を守るため、イラン、イラク、シリア、リビア、ソマリア、スーダン、イエメンの７カ国の市民を対象とした入国禁止令はすぐに実施される必要があると強調した。
同幹部は記者団に対し、「われわれの移民政策と、米国内のテロ計画や過激派ネットワークには、とても強い結び付きがある」と説明。「これから行おうとするまさにその安全対策を全世界に放送するのは無謀であり、無責任だろう」と語った。
同幹部はまた、国土安全保障省の主要人物には知らされていたことを明かしたが、詳細は差し控えた。
ビザや移民を扱う主な政府機関の１つである国務省では、同省職員２人によると、大半が移民に関する大統領令をメディアを通して知った。
一部の事務所は大統領令が発せられると分かっていたが、ホワイトハウスから公式な連絡や相談はなかったという。
「連携や話し合いがあったかと言えば、それは全くなかった」と、ある国務省幹部は匿名を条件に明かした。
移民政策は、連邦政府が行う政策のなかで最も複雑なものの１つであり、沿岸警備隊やＣＢＰから国務省や司法省に至る７つの機関が関係している。
国土安全保障省の幹部２人は２８日、大統領令のドラフト作成に関与した人物から相談を受けていた関連機関の職員について、あるいはそうした職員を監督する議会の委員会や小委員会について、何も聞いていなかったと話した。
「その結果が混乱と矛盾であるなら、責任はすべて１つの住所にある」と、同幹部の１人はホワイトハウスに言及した。この幹部も他と同様、トランプ氏の大統領令について匿名で語ることを要請した。
もう１人の幹部はロイターに対し、ホワイトハウスが「省の参加を限定して」大統領令に取り組んでいたとし、「それは困難が伴うが、何とか乗り切ったようだ」と述べた。
＜不統一な実施実態＞
米移民弁護士協会（ＡＩＬＡ）によると、異なる空港で影響を受けた約２００人の経験はさまざまである。
ビザを持つ多くはＡＩＬＡに対し、大統領令が発令されたにもかかわらず、問題なく米国への入国が許されたと語った。
一方、米国の永住権（グリーンカード）を保持する人の一部は、ＣＢＰから航空会社に許可されるべきとの指導が出ていたにもかかわらず、拒否された。
トランプ大統領が大統領令に署名してから約８時間が経過したシアトルで２７日午後１０時ごろ、カナダとの２重国籍を持つイラン人はバンクーバーから到着後にカナダに引き戻されたと、ＡＩＬＡに報告している。それから３０分後のニューヨークでは、ＪＦＫに到着したビザを保有する別のイラン人は問題なく入国できたという。
ＪＦＫで拘束されたイラク人の１人であるハミード・ハリド・ダーウィーシュさん（５３）は、イラクで米軍の通訳を務め、米国人を助けたとして現地で脅された経験がある。
ダーウィーシュさんと、米軍と一緒に働いた経験のあるもう一人のイラク人の代理で起こされた訴訟によると、ダーウィーシュさんと家族のビザは１月２０日に発行された。しかしＪＦＫに到着するとすぐにダーウィーシュさんはＣＢＰ職員に拘束され、弁護士との接触を禁じられた。
難民を支援する弁護士と法科学生による難民支援プロジェクトからやって来たダーウィーシュさんの弁護士が、誰にコンタクトを取ればいいかとＣＢＰ職員に尋ねると、職員は「大統領だ。トランプ氏に電話しろ」と答えたという。
最終的にダーウィーシュさんは釈放され、議員や弁護士らと会うことができた。パスポートを握りしめたダーウィーシュさんの目には喜びの涙があふれた。もう１人のイラク人も入国が許可された。
米国自由人権協会の移民弁護士、アンドレ・セグラ氏によれば、ＪＦＫで拘束されていた７人が２９日朝に新たに入国を許可されたという。同氏はロイターに対し、少なくともあと５人が拘束されていると語った。
＜グリーンカードめぐる混乱＞
メディア報道と政府発表の矛盾が、大統領令の対応に苦心する航空会社に混乱をもたらした。事情に詳しい人物によると、ＣＢＰが航空会社に大統領令について知らせたのは２７日遅く、電話会議においてだった。
ＣＢＰは２８日正午前に、グリーンカード保持者は入国禁止対象に含まれず、米国への渡航が引き続き可能と文書で伝えた。この情報筋によれば、航空会社はグリーンカードを持つ渡航者の搭乗を許可していたという。
その後、トランプ政権の当局者は記者団に対し、米国外から渡航するグリーンカード保持者は、米国に戻れるか米領事館のチェックを受ける必要があると語った。
「ケースバイケースで決められている」と、この当局者は語った。
２９日朝、トランプ政権はこの問題を再び取り上げたものの、グリーンカード保持者がどのように、また、どの機関によって検査されるのかという疑問は残されたままだ。
「大統領令はグリーンカード保持者には影響しない」と、プリーバス大統領首席補佐官はテレビ番組で明言。ただし、入国や税関審査で通常以上の質問を受けることになると述べた。
だが、ある政権幹部はロイターに対し、そのような検査がどこで、どのように行われるかは決められていなかったと明かした。同幹部によると、検査は本来、ＣＢＰあるいは国務省の担当であり、ガイドラインもまだ作成段階にあるという。

WASHINGTON — The White House on Monday pushed back against criticism of its decision not to mention Jews or antisemitism in its statement commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Their statement was roundly criticized by Jewish groups, ranging from nonpartisan organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League to political ones like the Republican Jewish Coalition.

Razer buys Nextbit — Robin Android smartphone owners shouldn't panic

The Nextbit Robin is a pretty cool Android smartphone. It is a good choice for those that want an unlocked device at an affordable price. Not to mention, it has a very cute and fun design.
Today, startup Nextbit announces that it has been acquired by PC accessory maker Razer. True, it seems like an odd acquisition, but not any stranger than Razer buying THX. With that said, getting into the smartphone game seems like a very risky business, as more established companies — such as HTC — are struggling lately. Has Razer made a mistake?
« I’m thrilled to announce that we’re joining the Razer family! They’re rebels like us, they speak from the heart, and they share our need to push boundaries. Nextbit will operate as an independent division inside Razer, focused on unique mobile design and experiences. To put it simply, we’ll be doing exactly what we’ve been doing all along, only bigger and better, » says Tom Moss, Co-Founder and CEO, Nextbit.
Moss further shares, « If you’re curious what this means for Robin, don’t worry. While we have stopped selling Robin and all accessories through our official channels, we are still dedicated to supporting all of you. We will continue to fulfill warranties for 6 more months. And as promised, we will continue to provide software updates and security patches through February 2018. »
Updates until at least February 2018? Very cool. While iPhone users would find this to be a short period for promised updates, many Android manufacturers simply won’t commit to any updates at all. Razer could easily pull all resources put towards supporting this phone, so it is very encouraging that the new owner is showing love to the Nextbit community.
My only major concern between this new marriage is the conflict in design choices. Nextbit seems to like whimsical designs with light and bright colors, while Razor is all about being dark — black and green. It will be interesting to see if Razer influences future smartphone designs.

Razer purchases Nextbit, will function as an independent division

It wasn’t that long ago that Nextbit burst onto the smartphone scene with promises that it would build a phone that can get better with age. The Robin was an interesting device that offered a style unlike most others and a price that was tempting, but most importantly, it had a unique cloud platform that would automatically optimize the space on your device. While the deal happened before the weekend, it has now been uncovered that Robin has been purchased by gaming accessory maker Razer.

The post does not give us any details about future products coming from Nextbit, but with its first handset being released over a year ago, a refresh is certainly in order. Although the Robin has been sold out from its official channel for quite some time, you can still pick up the device from third-party websites like Amazon for quite a steal.

Sundance Film Review: ‘Free and Easy’

A wry exercise in absurdism whose most imaginative idea is a soap bar that instantly puts people to sleep, “Free and Easy” may have the same effect on some viewers. But those who can roll with its measured pace and playfully nonsensical story will find the sum impact drolly diverting. Geng Jun ’s Hong Kong-produced latest feature, set in a faceless northeast mainland China burg, is exactly the kind of rarefied exercise in small-scaled universal insights, idiosyncrasies, and humor that has found a home in festivals for decades.
A middle-aged man ( Zhang Zhiyong ) walks around virtually empty streets; it’s unclear whether they’re empty because it’s the middle of freezing winter, or if the decrepit town really is as abandoned as it looks. He tries to sell his wares to the few passers-by. Encouraged to sniff the soap he carries in a suitcase, they get a big surprise: Most immediately fall to the ground, unconscious, allowing their money and valuables to be pocketed by the devious salesman. If they fail to pass out, or otherwise create a problem, he’s got a handgun to encourage cooperation.
This odd criminal enterprise turns out to be but one of a number of cons being run by all kinds of desperate sorts here. Another notable scam comes from an alleged monk (Xu Gang) who claims he needs donations to rebuild his fire-destroyed Buddhist temple. That plight briefly gets him charitably taken in by a gormless Christian naif (Gu Benbin) who spends his time quoting Jesus and posting flyers for his mother, who’s been missing for seven years (though one suspects she just ran off).
Also in the business of forlorn flyer-posting is a reforestation worker (Xue Baohe) terribly concerned about the whereabouts of a sizable sapling he thinks someone stole. He’s probably right about that, since nearly everyone here is a thief of one petty, preposterous sort or another. His wife (Wang Xuxu), at least, is in the legit biz of renting out rooms to boarders (including the soap guy). Her own grievances include having to fend off the unwanted attentions of a persistent police officer (Zhang Xun), one of two particularly useless local cops (the other essayed by Yuan Liguo).
These simply drawn, amusingly played figures crisscross and interact in ways whose off-center humor is sometimes rendered a little too low-key by the film’s overall mannered slowness. Still, as slight as “Free and Easy” is, it does build to a satisfying crescendo of minimalist slapstick before fading out on a shrug-inducingly cryptic note. Like characters in a Beckett play, the hapless human specimens here ultimately illustrate the simultaneous pathos and humor of survival, which they’re committed to simply for lack of a better option. The joke of the title is that the only thing that comes “free and easy” to these people is getting knocked out cold by the soporific soap.
Wang Weihua’s handsome widescreen lensing makes fine use of the location’s bleak landscape and nondescript, often crumbling architecture. The other notable package contribution, albeit one sparsely utilized, comes from the Second Hand Rose band’s stripped-down rock score.
