Who is Daniel Suarez, the guy taking over for Carl Edwards in NASCAR Cup series?

0

NewsHubDaniel Suarez’s chance to compete at NASCAR’s highest level came earlier than he expected. But he says he’s ready for it.
“When you are with right team, you know the opportunity will come, and it will come at the right time,” Suarez said Wednesday after it was announced he will replace Carl Edwards in Joe Gibbs Racing’s NASCAR Cup No. 19 Toyota. “I was there to take the opportunity and here we are. It’s something that you dream about.”
Mexico’s Suarez, 24, had been busy enough since winning last season’s Xfinity championship, becoming the first foreign-born driver to win NASCAR national series title. Then he got a call from JGR owner Joe Gibbs that Edwards was stepping away as a driver and that Suarez would replace him.
“Thank goodness Daniel was there to step in for us,”Gibbs said Wednesday. “Daniel was the obvious choice.”
Now, Suarez’s challenge is to prepare for a rookie season that will include the first Cup race of his career – February’s Daytona 500 – for one of the sport’s most competitive teams. Suarez will step into a solid No. 19 team led by crew chief Dave Rogers.
“I can’t wait to start learning about everything,” Suarez said.
Suarez began racing go karts when he was 11 in his hometown of Monterrey, Mexico, traveling around the country in a pickup truck driven by his father, who also served as his crew chief and mechanic.
“It started as a hobby,” Suarez told the Observer last June. “But we didn’t have much money. We were always looking for a sponsor and money. We had to somehow find a way to pull me to the next level. My dad and myself wanted to do something more in the sport, to be more professional, but we had no experience in what we were doing.”
Suarez eventually caught the eye of Jim Morales, who operated a race team in Mexico. By the time Suarez was 16, he was racing Mini Stocks in NASCAR Mexico and became the youngest driver to win a race in that series.
Morales advised Suarez his best chances to advance in the sport were to head to Europe for open-wheel racing or the United States for NASCAR. At first, Suarez chose Europe. But after a year in Italy, he decided to give NASCAR a try.
Suarez moved to the Charlotte area in 2011, but his first year in the United States was difficult. Struggling with the English language, Suarez drove for an independent team in racing’s lower levels with no success.
He practiced speaking with the engineers and mechanics at the race shop. He made a point of watching English-speaking television and movies.
As Suarez became fluent in English, his racing fortunes improved. In 2013, he was chosen to for NASCAR’s Drive For Diversity, a development system that spotlights minority and female drivers. He was also chosen for NASCAR Next, which helps prepare selected young drivers for a career in the sport.
He won three races in NASCAR’s K&N Pro Series East in 2013 and ’14. He drove in three Xfinity races in 2014, during which he was noticed by JGR, which signed him to its Xfinity team.
Suarez made the most of that opportunity. He was rookie of the year in the Xfinity in 2015, then won the 2016 championship, winning three races in the process.
A few weeks ago, Suarez was eating lunch with his girlfriend and her family when he received a phone call from Gibbs. Suarez left the table and listened to what Gibbs had to say: Edwards was unexpectedly retiring, Gibbs said, and Suarez was the team’s choice to move into the No. 19.
The news from Edwards – who at age 37 seemed to be in the prime of his career – had caught Gibbs completely unaware.
“This one threw us a curve ball, to be sure,” said Gibbs, who also coached Washington to three Super Bowl victories. “But that’s part of life and what we do.
“About 90 percent of the time, what happens with a coach is you’ve got to tell a guy you’re done at (age) 35, 36 or 37. Normally, you’re telling the athlete it’s over.”
Gibbs said he has encouraged Suarez to lean on JGR teammates Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth for advice.
Gibbs said Busch called him recently.
“He’s driving me crazy!” Gibbs recalled Busch saying. “He’s calling me, like, five times a week.”
Suarez will take part in a test on Jan. 31 at Phoenix International Raceway (one that will also be attended by Dale Earnhardt Jr., who is returning to racing after missing the second half of last season with a concussion).
Then it will be on to Daytona and Suarez’s rookie season as a Cup driver. Gibbs said Suarez will also drive in some Xfinity races, with Busch, Hamlin and Kenseth also possibly helping filling in for that team.
“I know this won’t be easy,” Suarez said. “But I couldn’t be on a better team to do this.”

Cubs’ Joe Maddon Looking Forward To White House Visit

0

NewsHub(CBS) — The World Series Champion Chicago Cubs are going to the White House Monday to be honored by President Obama, and Manager Joe Maddon is looking forward to the trip.
WBBM’s Rob Hart reports.
Maddon was greeted by loud cheers at the Salvation Army Freedom Center on the West Side, where he was serving meals as part of his “Thanksmas” dinner for the homeless.
He says it’s been a short, action-packed offseason, thanks to the World Series.
Maddon says he’s been stopped by Cub fans telling him what the World Series Championship means to them.
“Even like pumping gas, in the RV, in a truck stop, you’re going to get people recognize me, and they come up with different stories about what it means to them or their family,” he says.
He says President Obama may be a White Sox fan, but there are plenty of Cubs fans on his staff.
It will be Maddon’s third trip to the White House and his second time meeting President Obama. He met Obama at the All Star Game in St. Louis in 2009.

Sen. Booker Testifies Against Sessions for Attorney General

0

NewsHubSen. Cory Booker , D-N. J., delivered unprecedented testimony today against the nomination of his Senate colleague, Sen. Jeff Sessions , R-Ala., for attorney general, saying that his « conscience » outweighed Senate tradition.
“I know that some of my many colleagues aren’t happy that I am breaking with Senate tradition to testify on the nomination of one of my colleagues, but I believe, like perhaps all of my colleagues in the Senate, that in the choice of standing with Senate norms or standing up for what my conscience tells me is best for our country, I will always choose my conscious and country, » Booker said.
Booker said he believed President-elect Trump’s pick for attorney general has « not demonstrated a commitment » to a central prerequisite of the job — to demand equal rights and justice for all citizens.
« In fact, at numerous times in his career, he has demonstrated a hostility towards these convictions, » Booker said of Sessions.
The New Jersey senator said he was « deeply motivated » by the many issues the next attorney general will influence, especially the crisis of mass incarceration.
Booker said that while he and Sessions disagreed on the issues, they have always exercised a « collegiality and a mutual respect.  » In fact, Booker spoke of legislation that he and Sessions co-sponsored to award the Congressional Medal of Honor to the « foot soldiers who marched at Selma. «
It was an emotional plea in which Booker said that those marchers in Selma inspired him as a young lawyer to seek justice for all in New Jersey, and begin representing black families looking to integrate white neighborhoods who were turned away and denied housing.
« I am literally sitting here because of people, marchers in Alabama, » he said.
Booker said that his colleague’s record « indicates that he won’t » pursue justice for women, defend the equal rights of gay and lesbian and transgender Americans, defend voting rights or defend the rights of immigrants as attorney general.
This was the first time a sitting senator testified against another sitting senator in a cabinet confirmation hearing, according to Booker’s office, which contacted the Senate Historian’s office for the records.
Civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, who helped lead the 1965 march in Selma, and Cedric Richmond, D-Louisiana, leader of the Congressional Black Caucus, also expressed concern about Sessions’ nomination at today’s hearing.
« It doesn’t matter how Senator Sessions may smile, how friendly he may be, how he may speak to you, but we need someone who is going to stand up, speak up and speak out. For the people that need help for people who have been discriminated against, » Lewis said.
He told the senators that after decades of progress, many Americans are concerned that some leaders want to return to the « dark past, and the power of the law will be used to deny freedoms protected by the Constitution. «
« We need someone as attorney general who is going to look out for all of us and not just for some of us, » Lewis said.
However, others on today’s panel came to the Alabama senator’s defense.
« A lot has been said about Senator Sessions’ character. We have seen people who have never met Senator Sessions claim to know him and know his heart. We have seen members of this body and members of the House of Representatives just now who have worked with Senator Sessions and praise him for his work and now attack him. This should not be, » said Sessions’ former staffer William Smith.
Smith, the former Chief Counsel on the Administrative Oversight and the Courts Subcommittee, said that his former boss had fought for civil rights and against the Ku Klux Klan and fought for people regardless of the color of their skin.
« I’m not testifying to someone who just met him yesterday. I’ve known his family, I’ve dined at his house. We’ve eaten Johnny Rockets burgers together, » Smith added. « I’ve been in every political situation with him. Senator Sessions is unquestionably qualified for the job for which he has been nominated. He is a good Christian man, and a good family man. He is a man who has dedicated his public life to service. «
ABC News’ Hayley Walker and Ben Siegel contributed to this report.

Trump Rails Against ‘Fake News,’ Previews His White House Agenda

0

NewsHubCHICAGO (CBS) — In his first news conference since July, President-elect Donald Trump strongly denied reports that Russia obtained compromising personal and financial information about him.
“It’s all fake news, it’s phoney stuff, it didn’t happen,” Trump said during the press conference Tuesday morning. “It was a group of opponents that got together, sick people, and they put that crap together.”
Trump thanked some news outlets for not showcasing the reports, but blasted CNN for publishing the information, and refused to take questions from one of their reporters, Jim Acosta.
“I’m not going to give you a question, you are fake news.” Trump told Acosta.
He defended his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“If Putin likes Donald Trump, guess what folks, that’s called an asset, not a liability,” said Trump. “Do you honestly believe Hillary would be tougher on Vladimir Putin than me? Does anybody in this room really believe that? Give me a break.”
Trump also outlined plans to divorce himself from his extensive business empire by forming a trust to turn control over to sons, Don and Eric. According to the President-elect’s attorney, Sheri Dillon, the two will be responsible for making decisions for the duration of the presidency without any involvement from their father.
The company will continue to expand its domestic business by not participating in any deals abroad. Additionally, Trump vowed to move quickly to not only repeal, but also replace, Obamacare.
“Obamacare is the Democrats’ problem,” Trump said. “We’re going to take the problem off the shelves for them; we’re doing them a tremendous service by doing it.”
Trump also promised to build a wall along the Mexican border and eventually make Mexico pay for the project.

Highlights from Donald Trump's press conference

0

NewsHubPresident-elect Donald Trump held a free-wheeling, hour-long press conference at Trump Tower Wednesday morning — the first formal press conference he’s held since winning the presidency in November.
Though the motivation for the news conference was to outline how he will deal with his complex web of business interests once he’s in the White House, much of the press conference ended up focusing on Russian election interference and on reports Tuesday that the intelligence community’s classified report on Russian hacking had an addendum with unverified details of potentially compromising information that Russia has gathered on the president-elect, and that Mr. Trump was briefed on last week.
Here are some of the highlights:
Mr. Trump said he’s not allowed to discuss information that was presented during his intelligence briefing — but confirmed that outside the briefing, he did in fact see the memo in question on compromising information, calling it a “disgrace.”
President-elect Donald Trump slams reports that Russia has potentially compromising information about him.
“I saw the information, I read the information outside of that meeting. It’s all fake news — it’s phony stuff, it didn’t happen and it was gotten by opponents of ours,” he said. “It was a group of opponents who got together — sick people — and they put that crap together.”
Asked whether he accepts the intelligence agencies’ conclusion that Russia actively worked to influence the 2016 election, Mr. Trump said he believes Russia was responsible for the hacking — but stopped short of saying he believed they had an influence on the campaign.
“As far as hacking, I think it was Russian,” he said. “But I think we also get hacked by other countries and other people and I can say that when we lost 22 million names and everything else that was hacked recently, they didn’t make a big deal out of that, that was something that was extraordinary.”
Asked if he had a message for Putin about future hacking activities, Mr. Trump replied: “He shouldn’t be doing it, he won’t be doing it.”
President-elect Donald Trump talks about his potential relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Russia will have much greater respect for our country when I’m leading it than when other people have led it,” he said. “You will see that.”
He said he considers Putin’s praise of him to be “an asset, not a liability,” though he doesn’t yet know whether he and Putin will “get along.”
“Now I don’t know that I’m going to get along with Vladimir Putin,” he said. “I hope I do, but … do you honestly believe that Hillary [Clinton] will be tougher on Putin than me?”
Though Mr. Trump asserted that he would have been able to continue running his business from the White House if he wanted to, he said his two sons, Eric and Donald Jr., along with Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg, would take over his businesses while he’s president.
Donald Trump’s attorney explains how the president-elect is turning over his business to a trust run by his sons, but he won’t divest. Watch Trum…
“I could actually run my business … and run government at the same time,” he said. “I don’t like the way that looks but I’d be able to if I wanted to.”
The stacks of manila folders on the table next to Mr. Trump at the podium were, he said, “some of the many documents I’ve signed turning over complete and total control.”
Mr. Trump introduced Sherri Dillon of Morgan Lewis, a lawyer who has been working on the plan for the Trump business empire.
Dillon said Mr. Trump’s business holdings and investments will be put in a trust before Inauguration Day to be overseen by sons Donald Jr. and Eric, and Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg. Mr. Trump also said that his two adult sons will run the company. Ivanka Trump, whose husband Jared Kushner is set to become a senior adviser to the Trump White House, will have “no further management” role in the company.
There will be “no new foreign deals” made during the duration of Mr. Trump’s presidency, Dillon added, and domestic deals will be subject to “severe restrictions.”
To people who suggest Mr. Trump should sell his business, Dillon said that would only “exacerbate” the possibility for conflicts.
Additionally, in order to ensure that “it is the American people who will profit” going forward, Mr. Trump has directed that all profits from foreign government payments made to his hotels will be donated to the U. S. Treasury.”
At the start of the press conference, Mr. Trump thanked news organizations that did not run stories on Russia’s alleged compromising information about him.
After attacking CNN and BuzzFeed over Russian intel reports, President-elect Donald Trump gets into a heated exhange with a CNN reporter at his n…
“I want to thank a lot of the news organizations, some of whom have not treated me well over the years, a couple in particular, and they came out so strongly against that fake news,” he said. “I have great respect for the news, I have great respect for freedom of the press and all of that, but I will tell you there were some news organizations … that were so professional, so incredibly professional.”
Later on, he called BuzzFeed, which posted a document which it says is the dossier about the Russian information, “a failing pile of garbage,” and also criticized CNN for publicizing the reports on Tuesday.
CNN reporter Jim Acosta attempted to ask a follow-up question, but Mr. Trump repeatedly shut him down.
“No, not you, your organization is terrible. Quiet. Quiet,” he said. As Acosta continued trying to ask a question, talking over another reporter, Mr. Trump continued: “Don’t be rude. Don’t be rude. Don’t. Be. Rude. I’m not going to give you a question. You are fake news.”
After the exchange, he called on CNN digital reporter Jeremy Diamond, CBS News’ Arden Farhi noted.
Donald Trump ripped the intelligence community after a dossier was leaked regarding unverified, potentially compromising information held by the …
On a question about his proposed wall along the U. S.-Mexico border, Mr. Trump said Mexico will “reimburse” the U. S. for the wall because he doesn’t want to wait to build it until a deal can be made with Mexico.
“I want to get the wall started,” he said. “I don’t want to wait a year and a half until I make my deal with Mexico.”
As for the form that reimbursement will take, Mr. Trump said it’s more likely it will be through a “tax” than a “payment.”
“They will reimburse us for the cost of the wall, whether it’s a tax or whether it’s a payment,” he said. “Probably less likely that it’s a payment.”
In response to a question from CBS News’ Major Garrett, Mr. Trump said he plans to announce his pick to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia “within two weeks” of taking office.
During his first news conference as president-elect, Donald Trump talks about his plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.
“That will be probably within two weeks of the 20th,” he said. “So within about two weeks, probably the second week.”
Asked to discuss his administration’s plan for dealing with the Affordable Care Act, Mr. Trump declined to give any specifics but said, “We’re going to get health care taken care of in this country.”
He did say, however, that the ACA would be replaced “essentially simultaneously” with something “far less expensive and far better.” As soon as his health and human services secretary nominee, Rep. Tom Price, is confirmed, Mr. Trump told reporters “we’ll be submitting a plan” to repeal and replace Obamacare.
“Obamacare is a complete and total disaster,” he said, citing increased premiums and high deductibles. “… Frankly, we could sit back — and it was a thought from a political standpoint — but it wouldn’t be fair to the people.”

Windows 10 Creators Update will allow users to hit pause on updates

0

NewsHubMicrosoft released Windows 10 build 15002 to Insiders on the Fast ring a few days back, the first in just over a month. The new build is packed with a plethora of new features and improvements across the operating system. There is, however, one feature which may prove to be extremely popular among many users.
Tucked within the settings app is a new feature which allows users to defer incoming Windows updates, including driver updates, for up to 35 days, effectively fixing longstanding complaints about how the operating system forces updates on users.
This may prove extremely important for those who may be streaming live, perhaps gamers who rely on a constant internet connection and can’t afford to be interrupted by the pesky Windows update schedule. Although, one can assume many users, especially businesses, will also appreciate the change.
Currently all users running Windows 10 Insider Preview build 15002 can hit that pause button, however, there is a caveat. The option to pause updates will only be available to users running Windows 10 Professional, Education, and Enterprise editions when the Creators Update rolls out publicly.
If you are currently running Windows 10 Insider Preview build 15002 and would like to pause updates you can do so by heading over to Settings > Update & Security > Advanced options > Pause Updates.

Diese Kandidaten kämpfen um die Dschungel-Krone

0

Jetzt also das Dschungelcamp.
Also Kakerlaken und Känguru-Hoden essen.
