Police end NAACP sit-in against attorney general nominee ::

NewsHubPosted 9:38 p.m. today
Updated 9:40 p.m. today
By KIM CHANDLER, Associated Press
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Several NAACP protesters led by their national president were escorted away in handcuffs by police after staging a sit-in Tuesday at the Alabama office of Sen. Jeff Sessions, the nominee for U. S. attorney general, the civil rights group said.
The organization held the demonstration to protest Sessions’ nomination by President-elect Donald Trump, saying Sessions has a questionable record on civil rights and « can’t be trusted to be the chief law enforcement officer for voting rights.  »
« We have an attorney general nominee who does not acknowledge the reality of voter suppression while mouthing faith in the myth of voter fraud, » Brooks said by phone earlier in Tuesday’s protest.
The sit-in at Sessions’ office in Mobile, Alabama — the city the Republican senator calls home — began around after 11:a.m. Tuesday. Demonstrators refused a request by the building manager to leave when the building closed for the day at 6 p.m. Police could be seen on video footage coming and handcuffing at least five protesters and escorted them to a police van.
« We all are aware of the laws of trespass. We are engaging in a voluntary act of civil disobedience, » Brooks told the officers who arrived at the scene.
The NAACP broadcast the events live on the organization’s Facebook page. Patricia Mokolo, a spokeswoman for the Alabama chapter of the NAACP said the demonstrators including Brooks were arrested, but she did not know of a charge.
A police spokesman could not be immediately reached for comment.
The all-day protest ended in handcuffs but without confrontation. Brooks shook the hands of the officers and the officers allowed the protesters to kneel and pray before they were led away.
Brooks criticized Sessions’ prosecution of African-American voting rights activists on voter fraud charges when he was a U. S. attorney in Alabama. The group also raised concerns about the future of the Voting Rights Act under Sessions and noted allegations — raised decades ago in Sessions unsuccessful 1986 confirmation hearing for a federal judgeship — that Sessions made racially insensitive remarks when he was a U. S. attorney.
Sarah Isgur Flores, a spokeswoman for Sessions, said in a statement that the nominee has dedicated his career to upholding the rule of law, ensuring public safety and prosecuting government corruption.
« Many African-American leaders who’ve known him for decades attest to this and have welcomed his nomination to be the next Attorney General. These false portrayals of Senator Sessions will fail as tired, recycled, hyperbolic charges that have been thoroughly rebuked and discredited, » the statement added.
In testimony at the 1986 confirmation hearing, Sessions was accused by some hearing witnesses of saying the NAACP was « un-American » and saying he thought Ku Klux Klan members were « OK until I found out they smoke pot, »
Sessions said during the hearing that the Klan remark was a joke and that other remarks were mischaracterized. What he had said, Sessions said, was that civil rights groups hurt themselves when « they take positions that people think are un-American they hurt themselves.  » He then praised the work of the NAACP.
The demonstration marked the latest criticism of Trump’s pick for attorney general. Sessions’ confirmation hearings are expected to begin next week, highlighted by a vigorous push both by those favoring the nomination and those opposed to it.
Former Democratic Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, who was part of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund team representing the black civil rights activists in the voter fraud prosecution, on Tuesday urged U. S. senators to reject Sessions’ nomination.

Intel's new NUC mini-desktops get Kaby Lake, Optane and Thunderbolt 3

0

NewsHubA lot of cool technologies are coming to Intel’s latest NUCs, which are powerful mini-desktops that now boast the company’s latest Kaby Lake chips.
A NUC packs all components tightly in a small PC that is light enough to be held in one hand. These mini-PCs are easily customizable and considered desktop replacements.
Some of the new NUCs have Thunderbolt 3 ports, Intel Iris Plus graphics for 4K video, and are ready for Intel’s superfast Optane storage.
Intel has announced three new « tall » NUCs with 7th Generation Core i3, i5 and i7 chips, and two « short » NUCs with Core i3 and i5 chips. The « tall NUCs » are slightly larger and more powerful than the short NUCs.
The primary use of the Kaby Lake NUCs is for home entertainment, video editing, mainstream gaming and as a smart home hub, an Intel spokesman said.
The NUCs with Core i3 will be available shortly after CES, while others with Core i5 and i7 will ship later in the first quarter.
The new NUCs are being announced alongside new Kaby Lake chips, which are being used in dozens of new laptops. The Kaby Lake chips are between 5 to 15 percent faster than Intel’s older chips code-named Skylake.
The tall Core i7 unit is new, while the others are succeeding older NUCs with Skylake chips. Intel hasn’t announced a successor to its popular NUC called Skull Canyon, which has a Skylake chip.
The mini-desktops with Core i3 will serve as entry-level units, but Core i5 and i7 units are powerful and loaded with Thunderbolt 3 and Intel Iris Plus graphics.
All the tall NUCs — the NUC7i3BNH with Core i3, NUC7i5BNH with Core i5 and the NUC7i7BNH with Core i7 — will also be ready for Optane. Optane is a new class of memory and storage that could replace conventional SSDs and DRAM in PCs. The short NUCs — NUC7i3BNK with Core i3 and NUC7i5BNK with Core i5 — will not support Optane.
Optane will initially be available in the form of low-capacity flash storage that will help speed up applications. Optane, which is based on 3D Xpoint technology, will later be available in the form of high-capacity SSDs and memory DIMMs. Intel has shown Optane SSDs being 10 times faster than conventional SSDs, and denser than DRAM. Laptops like the ThinkPad T570 are already being announced with support for Optane.
All the mini-PCs will support HDMI 2.0 for 4K video. Details on other ports in the NUCs weren’t available, but will be shared by Intel on its website.
But one can expect the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The Thunderbolt 3 port will carry out the functions of a standard USB-C port. Thunderbolt 3 will make it possible to attach portable storage, external graphics cards and monitors to NUCs with communication speeds of up to 40Gbps (bits per second).
The NUCs will support DDR4 memory.
The prices of the new NUCs aren’t expected to be very different than those of its predecessors, the Intel spokesman said. With that in mind, the tall Core i3 NUCs could be priced at around US$300 and the Core i5 units at $400. The tall Core i7 unit could be priced at around $500.

Lenovo slaps Kaby Lake CPUs in Thinkpad X1 and Legion laptops

0

NewsHubLenovo is charging out of the gate at the Consumer Electronics Show with new portable machine. On one corner, we have machines representing its stalwart Thinkpad business-oriented brand. On the opposite end, there’s the company’s new Legion gaming marque. All of the machines pack Intel’s latest seventh-generation Kaby Lake CPUs. The Thinkpad X1 Carbon is a traditional slim laptop, the Thinkpad X1 Yoga is a cross between a laptop and a tablet, and the Legion Y520 is a gaming laptop with gamer-oriented aesthetics and discrete graphics cards. Let’s take a look at each one of these.
The Thinkpad X1 Carbon is available in a wide range of specifications, with top-of-the-line models packing an Intel seventh-generation Core i7-7600U, 16GB of 1866 MT/s LPDDR3 memory, and 1TB of NVMe storage. Lenovo says the X1 Carbon’s battery should last up to 15.5 hours, but we expect that range-topping configurations will not last quite so long on a single charge. Road warriors won’t need to sacrifice external connectivity for the sake of portability. Although the X1 Carbon has a 0.62″ (16 mm) profile and weights just 2.5 lbs (1.14 kg), the little laptop packs two Thuderbolt 3 ports, two USB 3.0 Type-A connectors, HDMI and Gigabit Ethernet ports, and microSIM and microSD slots. Buyers get a choice between 1920×1080 and 2560×1440 IPS panels. Wireless connectivity choices include a Qualcomm LTE modem, an Intel Wireless-AC Wi-Fi adapter, Bluetooth 4.2, and NFC.
Lenovo’s Thinkpad X1 Yoga isn’t quite as svelte as the X1 Carbon, but it makes up for it with flexibility. The Yoga can do the same 180° turn from a closed pose as previous models, but now packs Intel seventh-generation Core CPUs and a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports. The included pressure-sensitive pen can write and tap on any of three different 14″ displays, the most notable of which is a 2560×1440 OLED panel. Graphics horsepower comes by way of Intel IGPs, but buyers can at least choose a higher-spec Iris Plus Graphics 640 option. Like the X1 Carbon, storage options run the gamut from snoozy 128GB SATA to 1TB NVMe devices. Lenovo says the X1 Yoga’s battery can last as long as 16 hours.
The Legion Y520 gaming laptop bears the black-and-red colors present on Lenovo’s previous gaming offerings. The Y520 sports a 15.6″ screen, though Lenovo didn’t specify its resolution or panel type. Storage options include 512GB NVMe or 2TB hard drives, or combinations of both. The most interesting tidbit is the choice of Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050, GTX 1050 Ti, or AMD’s Radeon RX-560M graphics cards. This is the first we have heard of this particular AMD graphics card model. The Y520 is just over an inch (25.8 mm) thick and weighs in at a comparatively-hefty 5.5 lbs (2.5 kg).
Lenovo didn’t provide pricing or availability information for any of these mobile machines, but we expect more details sometime after CES is over.

The Intel Core i7-7700K (91W) Review: The New Out-of-the-box Performance Champion

0

NewsHubThe i7-7700K, launched today, is Intel’s fastest ever consumer grade processor. Using Intel’s third set of processors at 14nm, using the new 14+ variant, we get processors with a better frequency / voltage curve that translates into more performance, better efficiency, and the potential to push the silicon further and harder. Here is our review.
The i7-7700K is part of Intel’s 7th Generation of Core CPUs, which often goes by its internal code name ‘Kaby Lake’. The Kaby Lake family, as of today’s launch, stretches from 91W on the mainstream desktop down to 4.5W for notebook processors, all using the same underlying technology in different core and integrated graphics configurations. The i7-7700K is the top part of this processor family, featuring four cores with hyperthreading, a 4.2 GHz base frequency, a 4.5 GHz turbo frequency, a couple of new tricks and all for $303 list (so about $330 retail).
As a processor with the letter K in it, in Intel’s lingo this means the i7-7700K is an unlocked processor. Users with enough nous to understand the relationship between frequency, voltage, temperature and stability can take this processor above (or below) its standard operating frequency to get more performance without spending more money. The upshot of pushing the processor in this way is usually a higher power consumption, something that PC enthusiasts usually have to spare, and in the wrong hands a broken CPU through overclocking is worth the same as sand. There are two other K processors in the Kaby Lake family, the i5-7600K and the i3-7350K, which both have separate reviews as part of our launch coverage.
Intel calls the desktop like of processors the S series, and Kaby Lake-S (or KBL-S) ranges from a dual core low power 35W i3-7100T to the high-end 91W i7-7700K. The idea here is to offer many different parts at different price points to cater for customer needs, such as performance, power, cost and feature set. With every launch Intel tries to entice users to upgrade from their older system (citing hundreds of millions of daily PCs being 3+ years old), and so having new features is key to having better performance too.
With the high-end i7-7700K, being the top processor, the main draw is typically performance and overclockability. This review aims to take us through both of these, and the reasons why.
Intel Core i7-7700K (Kaby Lake) and Core i7-6700K (Skylake)
Comparing it to the previous generation high-end i7-6700K Skylake processor, we get the same configuration of cache hierarchy. The main difference between the two will be support for DDR4-2400 on the Kaby Lake rather than DDR4-2133, updated integrated graphics, a new generation of Speed Shift, AVX Offset support, and support for Intel’s ‘Optane Memory’.
Typically with each new generation of Intel CPUs brings about a fundamental increase in performance through the rate of instructions per cycle/clock (IPC) that the processor can go through. That being said, Intel has stated (and we’ve confirmed through testing) that Skylake and Kaby Lake are identical for IPC. As a result, the i7-7700K attempts to take the performance crown through frequency alone. The i7-6700K runs as 4.0 GHz base and 4.2 GHz turbo, while the i7-7700K runs at 4.2 GHz base and 4.5 GHz turbo. We quantify what this means in this review.
For the i7-6700K family, Skylake, Intel introduced Speed Shift (v1). This was a feature that, at a high level, gave control of the voltage/frequency curve from the operating system to the processor. Using a series of internal metrics, such as instruction analysis and frequency, the CPU would automatically adjust the voltage and frequency of the processor as required. This afforded two major benefits: one, with the CPU in control it has access to many more points on the curve compared to the OS which is limited to specific P-states on the processor.
The second benefit is the speed of transition. A processor that can ramp up to a high frequency quickly and then drop down as needed can get through instructions quicker but also save power. Imagine driving a car, and having to wait 60 seconds to change a gear – it’s that sort of analogy.
What Speed Shift v2 does in the i7-7700K and the Kaby Lake family, compared to v1 in Skylake, is manage those transitions to higher frequency faster. Before Speed Shift, transitions from idle to peak turbo were on the order of 100 milliseconds, and Speed Shift v1 took that to 30 milliseconds (with a good base established within 15). Speed Shift v2 means that peak performance from idle now happens in 10-15 milliseconds total. This means that interactions with the OS, such as touch, or actions that rely on low latency, can occur within a couple of frames on a 60 Hz display.
The benefit of Speed Shift lies a lot in touch devices, which perhaps doesn’t affect the i7-7700K in this review, but also in web interactions. A lot of web work is stop and start, such as scrolling or javascript functions.
There is one caveat however – Speed Shift currently only works in Windows 10. It requires a driver which is automatically in the OS (v2 doesn’t need a new driver, it’s more a hardware update), but this limitation does mean that Linux and macOS do not benefit from it. I would be hard pressed to not imagine that Apple and Intel were not working on a macOS driver, but as yet we have not had confirmation that one exists.
The latest memory technology to hit prime time is Intel and Micron’s 3D XPoint. This is a non-volatile form of data storage that is bit addressable and can be used as DRAM or storage. Despite being at least a decade in the making, and being formally announced in 2014, it is still yet to show up commercially as it is still being developed. Intel plans to create 3D XPoint DRAM that is slightly slower than normal DRAM but both denser (more of it) and non-volatile (keeps the data after power loss, saves power altogether), as well as 3D XPoint Storage that is faster than standard NAND flash, and more configurable. It the scheme of things, we expect the storage based products to hit the market first.
Intel, as far as we can tell, is set to release two main classes of product: Optane DRAM to be pin-compatible with DDR4 and require Optane DRAM enabled processors, and Optane SSDs which should work with any PCIe storage interface. ‘Optane Memory’ however, is something a little different. Based on pre-briefings, Optane Memory is certainly not Optane SSD we were told, but rather a storage cache for mechanical hard-drives. We’ve had this before with NAND flash drives, using Intel’s Rapid Storage Technology, and it seems that Kaby Lake and 200-series chipsets will support a new version of RST for PCIe-based storage. But because this is caching drive, such as the 16GB Optane Memory drives in Lenovo’s upcoming notebooks, and not Optane SSD, might lead us to believe that ‘Optane Memory’ drives are not designed to be directly user addressable.
All that being said, Intel has stated that Optane Memory standalone drives should hit the market nearer Q3 for general consumer use, which is more in-line with what we might expect to see with Optane SSDs in the enterprise space.

The efficient cards make use of Nvidia’s cutting edge Pascal technology, but dial back the pixel-pushing oomph a touch to give you better battery mileage and a healthier bank balance.
That’s not to say it’ll be a compromised experience however – Nvidia promises that you’ll be able to « play classic and modern games at 1080p @ 60 FPS with additional support for the latest DirectX 12 features » with laptops sporting the chipsets.
That’s 3x the performance seen on Nvidia’s last generation of comparable GPUs, while also supporting advanced features such as G-Sync (offering super smooth gameplay with supported displays) and Nvidia Ansel for pro-grade in-game screenshots.
There’s room for overclocking too, while switching on the Nvidia BatteryBoost feature will squeeze double the play time from laptops using the 1050 or 1050 Ti cards while still keeping above an enjoyable 30 FPS.
Thirty laptops with the new cards will ship during Q1 2017, with manufacturers including Alienware, MSI, ASUS and Dell. Pricing will vary, but the most affordable models will start at $699 (£570 / AU$970, complete with Intel’s Kaby Lake processing tech.
