Video by Mideast Specialist Joseph Braude Highlights a New Way to Combat Terror Groups

Titled « Outside the Box, » it shows how techniques used successfully to weaken the mafia through civil society can also be applied to groups like ISIS.

Footage shows how trans-state cartels in Brazil , Italy , and the U. S. resemble the likes of ISIS in that they espouse ideologies, claim territory, incite and recruit on social media, and kill for killing’s sake. But civic actors have used education, economic development, and state-society partnerships to undermine criminality and promote « lawful culture » in their stead.

Where is the power in humility?

— Nineteenth-century English writer John Ruskin wrote beautifully: “I believe that the first test of a great man is his humility. I don’t mean by humility, doubt of his power. But really great men have a curious feeling that the greatness is not of them, but through them.”
This thought-provoking observation begs the question, “Where is the power in humility?”
That’s a question I recently asked myself, while indulging in feelings of self-righteousness. I knew it was an important question, but I’m not sure I was ready, or wanting, to stop and be humble! I was justified in what I was unhappy about – or, at least, I made myself believe that I was.
But I knew better. In fact, through my study of Christian Science over the years, I’d learned some valuable life lessons about humility, teaching me how powerful it actually is. The first time I was introduced to the value of humility was when I learned of Christ Jesus’ counsel, “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” ( Matthew 5:5 ).
It can be tempting to believe that meekness and humility equal weakness. But Jesus’ incredible accomplishments point to an understanding of meekness that is much more than that. In one particular statement, Jesus revealed this deeper meaning of humility. He said, “I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me” ( John 8:28 ). Obviously, he wasn’t saying that he couldn’t do anything. He did amazing things – healing, raising the dead, walking on water, feeding multitudes – and led the way for others to follow in his example. Yet he was humble enough to realize that his divine Father, God, was the source of his ability. And he taught that God is also our Father – that God created each of us in His spiritual likeness (see Genesis 1:26, 27 ), and therefore is the true source of our abilities, too.
The greatness and magnitude of God’s power, which governs the entire spiritual universe, are infinite. Christian Science reveals that God is omnipresent Spirit, completely good, the only cause. As the effect of this great cause, we are each God’s perfect, spiritual offspring. This means that despite how it may seem when we look around, in truth you, I, and everyone exist spiritually – exclusively and entirely.
Humbly acknowledging that our source and being are in God opens the door for our true, good, capable nature to show through us more fully. Self-righteously, angrily clinging to a personal opinion obscures our view of that real nature of ours as God’s spiritual creation. On the other hand, when embracing God’s loving authority with all our heart, we naturally begin to abandon self-righteousness. This is humility in action. Jesus showed that such humility enables us to move forward and experience healing and harmony.
So the other day, when I was feeling that obnoxious sense of self-righteousness, I caught myself and considered my identity as the reflection of God, the source of all good. And harmony as well as freedom from those self-righteous feelings resulted from doing so, helping me see the power in humility. Always and everywhere, the one true power is God. Reality, gratefully, is in God’s perfect goodness, which through humble prayer can be evidenced in our lives in tangible ways.
Monitor founder Mary Baker Eddy explains in her book “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures”: “The conceptions of mortal, erring thought must give way to the ideal of all that is perfect and eternal” ( p. 260 ). In light of that, I see that I have more to learn on the path to discovering “the ideal of all that is perfect and eternal,” and truly understanding that God is the only source and power, creating all as perfect and eternal. Yet it’s good to acknowledge progress. We all should do that. Step by step, as we prayerfully come to trust in God’s supremacy and our relation to Him as His reflection, we find the humility that brings healing to us and our world – even while we’re learning.

Под Львовом полсотни человек застряли на канатной дороге

Во Львовской области 52 туриста были заблокированы на канатной дороге из-за отключения электричества.
Об этом сообщает сайт украинского телеканала 112 .
Инцидент случился на горе Погар Сколевского района 3 января в районе 13:20. Спасателям пришлось подключить к подъемнику аварийное питание.
При помощи аварийного двигателя, который работал в реверсном режиме, туристов удалось спустить уже в 14:20. Таким образом, люди провели на подъемнике примерно час. О пострадавших в результате данного происшествия не сообщается.
Как сообщал « Апостроф », ранее стало известно о новых ограничениях для транспорта в Львовской области , которые связаны со сложными погодными условиями в данном регионе.

В Закарпатской области из-за снегопада сошли две лавины. Об этом сообщает пресс-служба регионального ГосЧС на странице в Facebook.
« Вследствие ухудшения погодных условий 4 января на территории Закарпатской области зафиксировали схождение двух лавин », – говорится в сообщении.
Одна лавина сошла на автодороге между населенными пунктами Нересница и Ш. Луг Тячевского района.
Еще одна сошла на автодороге Колочава – Хуст в районе с. Ольшаны Хустского района. По предварительным данным, снежные массы перекрыли движение четырем автомобилям.
Сейчас на место событий направили пожарно-спасательные подразделения. До сих пор неизвестно, сколько человек находились в автомобилях.

Руководствуясь информацией Укргидрометцентра по осложнению погодных условий, комиссия по вопросам техногенно-экологической безопасности и чрезвычайных ситуаций исполнительного органа КГГА решила утвердить перечень пунктов обогрева на весь период осложнения погодных условий.
« 30 стационарных пунктов обогрева населения в г. Киеве будут функционировать с 06.01.2017 г. « , – говорится в сообщении.
В помещениях пунктов посетители могут не только согреться и выпить горячего чая, но и получить первую медицинскую помощь.

Курченко снова заочно арестовали, ГПУ требует до 12 лет тюрьмы

Убытки, вызванные преступной организацией, активным участником которой является Курченко, достигают более 7 млрд грн, сообщили в Генпрокуратуре
Печерский райсуд Киева заочно арестовал владельца « Восточно-европейской топливно-энергетической компании » (ВЕТЭК) Сергея Курченко.
Об этом сообщил адвокат Курченко Юрий Сухов.
« Это уже в третий раз суд выносит идентичное решение о применении меры пресечения к моему клиенту в виде содержания под стражей », – сообщил он. Защита Курченко намерена подать апелляцию.
Как сообщают в Генпрокуратуре, « убытки, вызванные преступной организацией, активным участником которой является Курченко, достигают более 7 млрд грн. По соответствующим фактам ему сообщено о подозрении ».
В ГПУ отмечают, что санкции по самым тяжелым из инкриминируемых подозреваемому статей предусматривают лишение свободы на срок от 7 до 12 лет.
Напомним, с марта 2014 года Курченко пребывает в международном розыске. Курченко фигурирует в деле о сжиженном газе как глава преступной организации. Следствие утверждает, что в 2010-2014 годах его компании получали сжиженный газ « Укргаздобычи » и « Укрнафты » по заниженной цене (установленной как для населения), а продавали как автогаз по рыночной.
Ранее главный военный прокурор Украины Анатолий Матиос завлял, что в Украине привлекли к ответственности 59 фигурантов уголовных дел, открытых за экономические преступления окружения бывшего премьера Николая Азарова, бизнесмена Сергея Курченко и других.

Прокуратура открыла дело по факту взрыва в доме в Сумах

Прокуратура Сумской области открыла уголовное дело по факту взрыва в жилом десятиэтажном доме, который произошел вчера. Об этом сообщает пресс-служба прокуратуры.
« Сведения внесены в Единый реестр досудебных расследований по ч. 2 ст. 194 (умышленное уничтожение или повреждение чужого имущества, повлекшее тяжкие последствия) УК Украины. Начато досудебное расследование », – сообщили в прокуратуре.
Предварительной причиной взрыва, по версии прокуратуры, является взрыв бытового газа.
« При обследовании места происшествия сотрудниками взрывотехнического отдела Главного управления Нацполиции в Сумской области взрывоопасных веществ, боеприпасов и их компонентов не выявлено. Предварительная причина – взрыв газовоздушной смеси », – заявили в пресс-службе.
Взрыв в доме в Сумах произошел вчера в 20.41. Один человек погиб , еще двоих спасатели достали из-под завалов дома. Местные СМИ сообщали, что квартиру взорвал мужчина, который пребывал на учете в психиатрической больнице.

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Jung Ho Kang may lose WBC roster spot

Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman Jung Ho Kang may lose his spot on South Korea’s roster for the World Baseball Classic after his third arrest for driving under the influence since 2009 last month in Seoul.
Kang, 29, was also interviewed by Chicago police last summer as a « person of interest » in a sexual assault investigation, although no charges were filed.
« He is a great player, but I’ve started to wonder if it’s worth the trouble taking him to the WBC, » South Korea manager Kim In-sik told Yonhap News Agency last Monday. « Personally, I am leaning toward taking Kang off the roster. »
Rosters for the World Baseball Classic must be submitted in February. The tournament takes place March 6-22.
Kang hit .255 with 21 home runs and 62 RBIs over 10 games in 2016. He owns a lifetime.273 career average with 36 homers and 120 RBIs.

Trump's slim NKorea options: Diplomacy, sanctions, force

Donald Trump says he is confident North Korea won’t develop a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike the United States. But his options for stopping the reclusive communist country are slim: diplomacy that would reward Pyongyang, sanctions which haven’t worked, and military action that no one wants.
For more than two decades, Republican and Democratic administrations have tried carrots and sticks to steer North Korea away from nuclear weapons. Each has failed. And as Trump prepares to take office Jan. 20, the stakes are rising.
Pyongyang may already be able to arm short-range and mid-range missiles with atomic warheads, threatening U. S. allies South Korea and Japan, and American forces in each country. On Sunday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said preparations for launching an intercontinental ballistic missile « reached the final stage. »
Trump tweeted the following day: « It won’t happen! »
Some experts believe the North is likely to have the capability to strike the U. S. mainland before Trump’s four-year term is up.
The president-elect has given conflicting signals about what he plans to do, while stressing that China, North Korea’s traditional ally, must exert greater pressure on its unpredictable neighbor.

DIPLOMACY
In June, Trump called for dialogue with North Korea and suggested a talk with Kim over a hamburger.
If only talking with the secretive, hereditary rulers in Pyongyang were so simple. No sitting U. S. president has ever done so.
Diplomacy with the North is a delicate dance and agreements have proved temporary.
Three U. S. administrations, going back to President Bill Clinton, have persuaded the North to disarm in exchange for aid. Each effort eventually failed, and there is deep skepticism in Congress about trying again.
A 1994 deal would have given North Korea nuclear power reactors and normalized ties with Washington. North Korea’s plutonium production paused for several years. But after it emerged the North also was seeking to use uranium for weapons, the arrangement collapsed.
Six-nation nuclear negotiations hosted by China have been on ice since North Korea withdrew in 2009.
The Obama administration attempted to restart them in 2012, early in Kim’s rule, by offering food aid for a nuclear and missile freeze. Within weeks, the North tried to launch a long-range rocket. The effort was abandoned.
Since then, the U. S. has resorted to « strategic patience » — demanding North Korea recommit to denuclearization before holding talks. Pyongyang has refused, demanding the U. S. end military exercises with South Korea and negotiate a peace treaty to formally end the 1950-53 Korean War.
American officials fear the North only would want talks to ease its isolation, and not to resolve the nuclear question.

SANCTIONS
International sanctions have tightened since North Korea conducted its first of five nuclear tests in 2006. But the country has adeptly circumvented restrictions on sensitive technology and money flows, and used its own capabilities to develop weapons.
Additional U. S. sanctions, beefed up last year, punish foreign companies and banks dealing with North Korea. They, too, haven’t been effective because the North’s international isolation makes it less susceptible to such pressure than a major economy like Iran, which curbed its nuclear program in 2015 after being battered by oil, trade and financial sanctions.
China’s role is critical. It dominates trade with the North and has resisted sanctions that could destabilize Pyongyang, fearing the possibility of a U. S.-allied, unified Korea emerging.
When the U. N. Security Council punished Pyongyang for another nuclear test in September, the primary goal was closing a loophole that enabled China to import North Korean coal at record levels.
The last several U. S. administrations entered office determined to break Beijing’s partnership with Pyongyang. None succeeded.

MILITARY
Using military force against North Korea is extremely risky.
Even before it developed nuclear weapons, the North maintained the ability to strike Seoul, South Korea’s capital, with a potentially devastating artillery barrage. Although doing so would invite a blistering U. S. response, it’s hardly a scenario any American commander-in-chief wants to contemplate.
The military option has been considered before.
Clinton considered a strike on the North’s nuclear facilities after it announced it would reprocess fuel from a nuclear reactor, providing it plutonium for bombs. Diplomacy appeared to win out that time with the 1994 agreement.
A military strike would be harder to pull off now. North Korea has expanded its nuclear and missile programs significantly, meaning more targets would have to be hit.
And regional support would be questionable.
In a recent paper, former U. S. negotiator Joel Wit said the escalation risk meant neither South Korea nor Japan would likely support a military strike. It could also draw into the conflict China, which fought on North Korea’s side against U. S.-led forces six decades ago.

В турецкой провинции Измир задержаны около 40 человек, связанных с Исламским государством, которых подозревают в причастности к стрельбе в ночном клубе 1 января. Об этом сообщает Hurriyet Daily News.
В число задержанных входят 20 детей, 9 мужчин и 11 женщин, в основном из Туркменистана, Дагестана и Киргизии.
Ранее полиция Турции задержала в провинции Измир 20 предполагаемых членов ИС, связанных с нападением на ночной клуб в Стамбуле в новогоднюю ночь.
В ночь на 1 января 2017 года неизвестный расстрелял из автомата Калашникова посетителей стамбульского ночного клуба Reina, которые праздновали там Новый год. Жертвами атаки стали 39 человек, более 60 человек получили ранения.
Ответственность за теракт в Стамбуле взяла на себя террористическая организация Исламское государство.
Турецкие правоохранители распространили фотографию мужчины, которого подозревают в совершении нападения в Стамбуле. Как выяснилось позже, он может быть гражданином Кыргызстана, его супруга была задержана.
В то же время киргизские власти заявляют , что допросили человека, якобы подозреваемого в теракте, и выяснили, что он не причастен к нападению.
4 января министр иностранных дел Турции Мевлют Чавушоглу заявил , что личность стамбульского террориста установлена, операция по его поимке продолжается.
