No plans for digital Fisher in ‘Star Wars’

0

NewsHubLOS ANGELES — The makers of “Star Wars” have put a quick end to rumors that while Carrie Fisher has died, her Princess Leia may live on.
Making a rare foray into the sprawling world of “Star Wars” speculation, Lucasfilm said Friday night that there are no plans to digitally recreate Fisher to appear in future episodes of the movie saga.
“There is a rumor circulating that we would like to address,” a company statement said. “We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa.”
Fisher, who reprised her role as Leia in 2015’s “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens,” had finished shooting “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” due out next December, when she died Dec. 27 of cardiac arrest at age 60.
Her mother Debbie Reynolds died the next day.
But Fisher had also been slated to appear in “Episode IX,” scheduled for release in 2019. That film is still being scripted, and the writers are deciding how to handle her death.

Actress Zoe Saldana Slams Hollywood 'Bullies' Against Trump

0

NewsHubHollywood actors were « bullies » toward President-elect Donald Trump — and that treatment helped the Republican win the November election, « Star Trek » actress Zoe Saldana said in an interview.
« We were trying to single out a man for all these things he was doing wrong, » she added, « and that created empathy in a big group of people in America that felt bad for him and that are believing in his promises.  »
Saldana, who supported Democrat Hillary Clinton, said that the time had come to move forward from the election.
« I’m learning from [Trump’s victory] with a lot of humility, » she said. « If we have people continue to be strong and educate ourselves and stand by equal rights and treat everyone with respect, we won’t go back to those times.  »
« I just say he’s now elected and we as a country need to support whoever’s the president because that’s what the country’s based on, » Kidman said on Tuesday. «  »However that happened, he’s there, and let’s go.  »
« You and all of us in this room belong to the most vilified segments of America right now: Hollywood, foreigners and the press, » she said.

Holliday, best known for her Tony-winning role in Broadway’s “Dreamgirls,” faced pressure from her gay, lesbian and black fans when it was announced she would sing at Thursday’s concert at Washington’s Lincoln Memorial.
Holliday said in a statement Saturday that she apologized for her lapse of judgment, for being uneducated on the issues and causing heartbreak for her fans.
Several prominent entertainers have declined to perform at Trump inaugural festivities. Country star Toby Keith and actor Jon Voigt are in the lineup for Thursday’s concert.

Judd Apatow and Pete Holmes talk HBO's 'Crashing' and the future of comedy in the Trump age

0

NewsHubWith two new shows about stand-up comics coming to premium cable, stand-up comedy may well be the new rock ’n’ roll in 2017.
On the heels of the music-centric series “Vinyl,” “Roadies” and “Sex&Drugs& Rock&Roll,” Showtime has the ’70s stand-up of the Sunset Strip in “I’m Dying Up Here” due this summer. And HBO offered an early look at its glimpse of New York’s modern-day comedy scene, “Crashing,” which debuts Feb. 19.
The series was created by stand-up comic Pete Holmes and executive producer is Judd Apatow , who in addition to his long line of influential comedies is also an experienced comic.
Drawing from Holmes’ time at open mics and “bringer rooms” from early in his career, as well as his experience as someone raised as a Christian navigating that world, “Crashing” will also feature real-life successful stand-up comics Sarah Silverman, T. J. Miller and Artie Lange portraying versions of themselves.
Holmes, who hosted a late-night talk show on TBS from 2013 to 2014, said a half-hour comedy that drew from his own background was a natural step toward reaching a broad audience.
“When I really considered after the talk show what I wanted to do, I asked myself what are the shows that really latch on to me?” he said, noting the importance of characters he could care about. “I kind of had a quiet reset after the talk show … but I was like, everything aside, what are we here to do? What is the story [I] uniquely can tell?”
“So if you’re really trying to burrow into Americans’ viewing patterns, I think you need to connect on some sort of emotional level,” he said.
The panel took a broader view at its close as Apatow and Holmes were asked about the role of stand-up comedians in facing the coming Trump administration.
“I don’t think we really know,” Apatow began, and went on to express uncertainty about the impact of “brilliant” satirists such as John Oliver, Seth Meyers and Samantha Bee. “I think everyone has to keep it up and pay attention … but I don’t know if it’s the linchpin thing that will alter anything. It may just be about us getting a laugh at the end of a very stressful day of new information.”
“It’s hard to do comedy when what’s happening is so weird,” Apatow said. “We’ve really passed the point where daily offense would be logical if I was writing a movie. Everything now is weirder than the movie ‘Network.’
“It’s a whole new ballgame,” he said.
Casey Affleck talks about the way Kenneth Lonergan uses everyday language to convey deep emotion in « Manchester by the Sea.  »

Dakota Fanning is heading to the small screen.
Turner used its semi-annual platform before the Television Critics Association to make the announcement, which sets Fanning as the lead of TNT’s forthcoming drama The Alienist , based on the international bestseller from Caleb Carr. The actress will star a headstrong secretary at Police Headquarters by the name of Sara Howard. Together with characters being played by previously cast Daniel Brühl ( Inglorious Bastards ) and Luke Evans ( The Girl on The Train ), she’ll investigate a series of brutal murders in New York during the Gilded Age. Production is set to begin in Budapest shortly, with plans for the series to premiere later this year.
Described as a psychological thriller, The Alienist is set in gritty 1896 New York City, a mix of vast wealth, extreme poverty and technological innovation at that time. When a cadre of gruesome murders of boy prostitutes grips the city, newly appointed police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt calls upon criminal psychologist (aka alienist) Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Brühl) and newspaper reporter John Moore (Evans) to conduct the investigation in secret. They’re aided by a makeshift crew of characters, among them the intrepid Howard, a young secretary on Roosevelt’s staff who’s determined to become the first female police detective in New York City. Using the emerging disciplines of psychology and early forensic investigation techniques, this band of social outsiders tracks down one of New York City’s first serial killers.
Jakob Verbruggen ( Black Mirror ) is set to direct and executive produce the project, a co-production between Paramount TV and Turner’s Studio T. True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga along with Academy Award winner Eric Roth ( Forrest Gump ), Hossein Amini ( Drive ) and Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and Rosalie Swedlin are all attached as executive producers. The project was first announced in April 2015, and is part of Kevin Reilly’s ongoing push to make TNT a more premium destination.
To be sure, Alienist marks Fanning’s first significant TV foray since her turn in Steven Spielberg’s 2002 Syfy miniseries Taken. In the decade and a half since, she’s starred in films including the Twilight saga, I Am Sam , War of the Worlds and The Runaways. She can be seen now in the 1960s-set film American Pastoral opposite Ewan McGregor; and in the coming year or two in Please Stand By Me , Brimstone , The Bell Jar and Ocean’s Eight.
She’s repped by CAA, Echo Lake and Hansen Jacobson.

Famed ‘Exorcist’ author, filmmaker William Peter Blatty dead at 89

0

NewsHubWASHINGTON, January 14, 2017 – Screenwriter and novelist William Peter Blatty, who won widespread fame as the author of “The Exorcist” (1971), died Thursday morning, January 12 at a hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, the Washington, D. C. suburb where he lived. He was 89.
William Friedkin, a longtime friend and colleague who directed iconic 1973 film adaptation of Blatty’s novel, announced the author’s death via Twitter.
According to the Guardian , “Blatty’s widow, Julie Alicia Blatty, told the Associated Press the cause of death was multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer,” which had only been diagnosed recently.
Early life and work
William Peter Blatty was born in New York City in 1928, the son of Lebanese parents who emigrated to America on a cattle boat. When his father abandoned the family three years after his birth, he was raised by his intensely Roman Catholic mother, an influence that was to permeate his life and his writing.
Blatty attended Brooklyn Preparatory, a Jesuit school, on scholarship, graduating as class valedictorian in 1946. Continuing his education with the Jesuits, he then attended Washington, D. C.’s Jesuit college, Georgetown University, on scholarship, and upon graduation, headed across town to George Washington University where he was awarded a master’s degree in English Literature.
He worked several odd jobs before joining the United States Air Force where he quickly rose to become head of the policy branch of the Air Force Psychological Warfare Division—a military branch known more popularly today as “psy-ops.” Blatty eventually wrote about his experiences in psy-ops in his early autobiographical effort, “Which Way to Mecca, Jack?”
After leaving the Air Force, he worked for the U. S. Information Agency (USIA) for a time, working out of that agency’s branch in Beirut, Lebanon, where his Lebanese background proved an asset. However, longing to be a writer and an active member of the entertainment community in almost any capacity, he eventually returned to the U. S., working for a time in public relations on America’s left coast, first for the Jesuit Loyola University of Los Angeles and later at the University of Southern California.
He also continued to write. After the publication of “Which Way to Mecca, Jack” (1960), he wrote and published a trio of comic novels, “John Goldfarb, Please Come Home” (1963), “I, Billy Shakespeare” (1965), and “Twinkle, Twinkle, ‘Killer’ Kane” (1966). All three proved critical successes but proved only modestly profitable in bookstores.
“The Exorcist” and Hollywood success
Hoping to improve his luck and his literary and Hollywood profile, Blatty moved toward screenwriting. He scored success working with well-known director Black Edwards, contributing scripts for “A Shot in the Dark” (1964), “What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?” (1966), and “Darling Lili” (1970), a popular musical that starred Julie Andrews and Rock Hudson. He also worked independently, penning scripts for several other films including the 1969 classic, “The Great Bank Robbery.”
But all these successes were eventually dwarfed by the recognition he received for his sensational 1971 religion-themed, supernatural horror novel, “The Exorcist.” Intriguingly, the Washington, D. C. based story was based on an actual exorcism, that took place in the late 1940s. This rare, ancient and still controversial Catholic ritual was performed on the boy by a Jesuit priest in the hope of banishing the demonic spirit that seemed to possess him.
Blatty placed his novel firmly in the Georgetown neighborhood of D. C. and in contiguous Georgetown University, the Jesuit college he had earlier attended. He also traded in the real-life teenage boy of the original exorcism for a young teenage girl in his version of the tale, perhaps hoping to give his novel wider appeal.
Almost immediately upon publication, Blatty’s gruesome supernatural horror story of demonic possession quickly proved a novelistic sensation. It soon became a fixture of the New York Times best seller list, remaining there for a remarkable 57 consecutive weeks, hitting the number 1 spot for a total of 17 times.
Hollywood couldn’t resist this compellingly scary psychological and oddly spiritual tale. Blatty soon found himself adapting the novel into a script and working closely with director William Friedkin to create perhaps the most acclaimed and certainly the most original horror thriller of the late 20 th century.
The film version of “The Exorcist” (1973) won Blatty a triple play: An Oscar for his screenplay and a pair of Golden Globes for Best Writing and Best Picture, the latter because Blatty had also produced the movie.
“The Exorcist” and its sequels
Blatty continued to work as a Hollywood screenwriter after “The Exorcist.” While he did achieve some successes, none of his film work scaled that movie’s heights, although the 1980-81 film, “The Ninth Configuration,” which Blatty adapted, produced and directed, was nominated for three Golden Globes in 1981.
Hollywood could not resist going back to the Exorcist well for sequels, but the first one—“Exorcist II: The Heretic,” a project with which Blatty was not involved—was a notorious flop.
Blatty gave it a go once again with “Exorcist III,” which he adapted, directed and produced based on his own sequel, which he initially entitled “Legion.” The 1990 film was better received than “Exorcist II.” Yet it, too, was not quite the hoped for hit, which some Exorcist fans attributed to poor editing of the final cut.
But in 2016, “Exorcist III” experienced a notable resurrection of sorts, according to writer Brad Miska who notes that Shout Factory released “the once considered lost Director’s Cut” of “Exorcist II, a version of the film horror fans have been clamoring for since its release in 1990.”
“William Peter Blatty, who wrote the original ‘The Exorcist’ novel and screenplay, directed the third film in the franchise that had been completely retooled by Morgan Creek. While most of the original footage was lost, a VHS workprint has been discovered that carries a lot of the footage, including much of Blatty’s vision for the film. Shout Factory’s release boasts the original title, Legion , as well as a new assembly of the film that includes said shots from the discovered VHS. So while it’s not 100% Blatty’s original vision, it’s allegedly close.
“What’s so interesting about juxtaposing the two cuts is knowing that Legion is Blatty’s direct sequel to The Exorcist. Legion feels intimately connected to the 1973 classic, while the theatrical cut is an action-packed quasi-sequel that forces connections to William Friedkin’s adaptation.”
Final arrangements
Final arrangements have not yet been announced by the family. Blatty’s widow, Julie Alicia Blatty suggests that in lieu of sending flowers, donations be sent to the LC Pastoral Services of the Legionaries of Christ or to Solidarity with the Persecuted Church, an organization that supports persecuted Catholics in the Middle East and other regions.

TBS is taking another page from FX’s development slate.
The Turner-owned network announced Saturday at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour that it has handed out a 10-episode series order to animated comedy The Cops.
The series, developed as a pilot for FX last January, was co-created and stars comedy heavyweights Louis C. K. and Albert Brooks, with The Office ‘s Greg Daniels boarding the series with its move to TBS. The series is produced by FX Productions, with Turner’s Studio T coming on as a co-producer with the move to TBS. The series will debut in 2018 as animation typically requires a longer lead time. C. K.’s FX Productions-based Pig Newton banner will exec produce, giving the multihyphenate four shows (including FX’s Louie, Better Things and Baskets ). For Brooks, it marks the comedy legend’s first foray into scripted television.
Here’s how TBS describes the show: The Cops follows Al (Brooks) and Lou (C. K.), two Los Angeles patrolmen trying their best to protect and serve, sometimes failing at both. Ride with them as they patrol one of the biggest cities in the world, then go home with them and be glad you’re not married to either.
« We have made the bold decision to put Louis C. K., Albert Brooks and Greg Daniels at the forefront of what is going to be a serious push into animated comedy for TBS in 2018, » said Brett Weitz, executive vp original programming at TBS. « I only hope these newbies know what they’re doing.  »
Brooks, C. K. and Daniels exec produce alongside Dino Stamatopoulos (via Dan Harmon’s Starburns Industries banner), Dave Becky, Howard Klein and 3 Arts.
The Cops joins an animated slate at TBS that includes Fox import American Dad (now in its 12th season) as well as the upcoming dark comedy Tarantula — about residents at a seedy hotel — as well as interstellar comedy Final Space. The animated slate joins a roster of six freshman shows that were all launched and renewed for additional seasons in 2017: Angie Tribeca, The Detour, Wrecked, People of Earth, Search Party and Full Frontal With Samantha Bee. Next up for TBS is Greg Garcia’s comedic anthology The Guest Book.
The Cops marks the second comedy originally developed for FX that found a series home on Kevin Reilly-led TBS. The cable network last year went straight to series on an untitled Tracy Morgan family comedy created by Jordan Peele. Turner’s Studio T will now produce the comedy after moving the project over from FX Productions.
