Saturday’s women’s college roundup: Maine falls to UMBC

NewsHubBALTIMORE — Taylor McCarley’s layup gave the University of Maryland-Baltimore County a two-point lead with 45 seconds to play and the Retrievers beat the University of Maine 66-62 in an America East women’s basketball game Saturday.
Maine (12-13, 5-5 America East) trailed 59-50 with 4:39 to play, but used a 12-1 run and took a 62-60 lead with 1:47 left on a 3-pointer by Sheraton Jones. UMBC (11-12, 6-4) tied it on a layup by Te’yjah Oliver 17 seconds later.
McCarley scored 21 points for UMBC.
Laia Sole finished with 15 points for Maine.
MacDonald finished with 16 points for UNE, which won its 10th straight. Sadie Nelson added 13 points and Alicia Brown added 12.
Champagne finished with nine points and 10 rebounds for St. Joseph’s.
Marle Curle added 10 points for Bowdoin.
Bernadette Connors added 14 points for the Bobcats.
Katie Howe scored 13 points for USM.
Haley Driscoll had 13 points for Colby.
Jessica Jacques, Brooke Stacey and Kara Washer also scored for Maine. Katelyn Rae had three goals for Merrimack.
Marissa Fichter and Brigit Bergin scored to give Bowdoin a 2-0 lead.
Stephanie Izzi, Erin Heally and Elena Gualtieri each added goals for Connecticut College.
Sydney Helmbrecht had 41 saves for UNE.
