«Alien: Covenant» may not exactly be ripping through box office records, but it is the highest grossing movie globally this weekend.
Good for ALIENS: Covenant to be #1 in Box Office the weekend it’s released.
The callbacks to the first (and superior) ALIEN movie was nice, especially the subtle Böcklin homage, Ash’s line, and the Gigeresque sketches that “Walter” got better in since PROMETHEUS… but Ridley Scott has apparently pulled a Lucas in revisting his IP for the new series of Alien films. Questionable wtf additions to the established mythos, needless character revelations, and a decidedly “unscientific” mentality of the supposed professionals done to ADVANCE the plot result in (yet another) film that’s beautifully shot, but series discountable. It expands the Alien franchise… but raises questions in what is brought in.
Don’ t think it’ ll sustain and repeat the interest for 2nd week. (Being Rated R, and a downer-but-pointing-to-the-next-sequel ending than the popcorn entertainment of GOTG 2, it’ ll make TCF some money… but imo still behnd ALIEN RESURRECTION as #3 in the film franchise.)
