Wilson struggled after being dealt to Chicago on July 31. He had a 5.09 ERA in 23 appearances, walking 19 in 17 2/3 innings.
Former Detroit Tigers reliever Justin Wilson, who pitched only once for the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the playoffs, was removed from the team’s National League Championship Series roster.
The Cubs play Game 1 against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night.
Wilson struggled after being dealt to Chicago on July 31. He had a 5.09 ERA in 23 appearances, walking 19 in 17 2/3 innings.
The Tigers sent Wilson and catcher Alex Avila to the Cubs, getting two prospects — third baseman Jeimer Candelario and shortstop Issac Paredes — in return.
Avila, playing behind Wilson Contreras, hasn’t played at all in the playoffs but remains on the postseason roster.
Wilson was replaced by reliever Hector Rondon.
While the deadline deal didn’t pay off for the Cubs, the Houston Astros are much happier they pulled the trigger.
Justin Verlander will start Game 2 for the Astros against the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon. He went 2-0 in the ALDS against the Boston Red Sox after a brilliant month of September for the Astros.
