In light of a stern backlash from the community, Electronic Arts (EA) and DICE have decided to reduce the pricing of playable heroes in the game. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader will now be available for 15,000 Credits; Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa for 10,000 Credits; and Iden Versio for 5,000 Credits; all down from the previous base price of 60,000 Credits.
It might seem like a victory for the protesting players, except it is not. According to Game Informer and Stevivor, the number of Credits received from finishing the single-player campaign have been greatly reduced to balance the cheaper heroes. Star Wars: Battlefront II previously offered 20,000 Credits but that reward has now been changed to just 5,000 Credits.
In other words, going through the single-player campaign will only allow players to unlock Iden Versio for the multiplayer mode. From there, they must grind for the rest of the playable characters or resort to purchasing Crates (loot boxes) for immediate access.
It is incredibly cheeky of the publishing-giant to make it appear that it is addressing a problem, while going behind the players to do something it knows will not be taken lightly. The community is yet to drop its pitchforks and torches, and we might see more drama before the week ends.
If you were unaware, EA achieved the most down-voted comment in the history of Reddit yesterday when it tried to defend the enforced microtransactions in the game. It is undoubtedly a profound feather in its cap.
Star Wars: Battlefront II is scheduled to release on November 17 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
