As Microsoft promised three months ago, the company will be shutting down its Groove Music Pass today. Customers can no longer stream their libraries or download music purchased from the Store.
Almost three months ago, Microsoft announced that it will be shutting down its Groove Music services, and today is the day. After today, you’ll no longer be able to access your Music Pass library or download any of the music that you’ve purchased.
Groove Music Pass originally began life as the Zune Music Pass, which predates most modern streaming music services like Apple Music or Google Play. The Zune brand later merged with Xbox and the Xbox Music Pass was born. Finally, in mid-2015 and shortly before the release of Windows 10, Xbox Music was replaced with Groove Music.
The Groove app will continue to exist, and you still won’t be able to uninstall it from your Windows 10 PC for the foreseeable future. It will only serve as a media player that can play music that’s stored locally or in OneDrive.
You won’t be able to access your Music Pass library anymore. For this, Microsoft has partnered with Spotify to provide an easy way of transferring all of your songs and playlists. In fact, you’ve probably seen the notification offering you this service for a few months. If you haven’t made preparations for this yet, you’ve been procrastinating quite a bit.
The same goes if you haven’t downloaded your purchased music. After today, you’re not going to be able to access them anymore, but you can always download your songs and store them in OneDrive. You’d still be able to play them through the Groove app.
But as they say, the song is ending for Groove Music services. It would seem that it still works for now, so if you have indeed been procrastinating for these past few months, you can still do something about it.
